Yi Returning Early to New Jersey

Yi is dominating for Team China, but Chinese media reports that Yi has requested to return stateside to prepare for the upcoming NBA season: “Yi Jianlian was expected to play next week for Team China in the country’s Stankovic Cup, but Chinese media are reporting he may bag that tournament and return to New Jersey early. The national teams from Angola, Australia, Turkey and China will take part in the Cup, which is held Aug. 28-31 in Kunshan. Chinese officials had said they expected Yi to play in the Cup, but it now appears he is headed to the US.”

The Yi Rules: He’s dominating too much, send him back early

Does Yi start for the Nets? They don’t have any other PF’s right?

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

Does that tournament even mean anything, or does China still need a bid for Turkey next year? What is Yi dominating exactly? Pre-Stankovic Cup exhibition games? Brook Lopez, Sean Williams, and Josh Boone all can play PF, but only one of those guys has actual basketball skills, and the Nets need him to play center.

Coming back just in time for Chinese Day Parade! Because, if you seen him, it isn’t to actually play Basketball.

Chen: China lost the finals of the Asia championship last subday to Iran. Ehadidi (Grizzlies big man) and his boys pwned the Chinese team. At one point in the 3rd, Iran was up by 24. Yi had a bad shooting day, made even worse by his unwillingness to drive on Ehadidi(who guarded YI most of the game & vice versa). Most effective player for China was (gasp) Wang Zhi Zhi, who had a very effective 20+ point game, mostly from the post (!) or on drives (!!). Well both teams are now qualified for Turkey 2010. Oh, Monkey King played as well, off the bench…. And was a non factor. Remember last summer how he was blowing by team usa defenders regularly and played all carefree? Yeah, not anymore. I’d say the Lakers sapped the spirit outta him.

I guess averaging 18 points for the asia championship is considered dominating by some. Yi showed flashes of his game, even stuffed one right in Hamed’s face in the final game but he’s too tentative as a 4. and he’s got a lot to learn on D. Atrocious help D.

Surely China aren’t too happy about this??

If he could defend the perimeter he would be able to play as a 3 but he lacks defense all around.

    depends who pays better :D

    Stankovic Cup???

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Yi will be pretty good this year.
@ Darksaber and Witness: I agree that he needs to get tougher for the power forward position, but I think part of that problem is his tendency to get really, really lazy.
He’s too tall and not mobile enough to play the 3, and he really can play the power forward if he works harder and gets angrier. That’s why I thought he’d be good for the Celtics, because their work ethic and toughness could help Yi develop some of that kick@ssedness.

coach frank better not play him too many minutes because if he gets injured…

    Yeah!
It would be great to watch him this season. Send him back ASAP.

He’s finally playing well and it’s scaring him, so he needs to come back and struggle.

Heh Moose. According to Shaq(ovic), even the Stankovic cup probably has lights out shooters. All about the ‘vic, even the Stanky ones.

Anyone else think Yi would become a better pro with Yao as a teammate?

  • knockknock

We already seen what yi could do last time yao and yi were on team china. Let’s just say yao played like a franchise player, and yi played like a bench warmer.

@NiQ: The Nets have Sean Williams as far as I know.

B-U-S-T! Guy sucks. He just doesn’t belong in the NBA, he is wayyyyyy to soft.

@ knockknock ==> I’m not great fan of Yi, but alot of the problems he had must be attributed to the imbecilic coaching Team China had at the Olympics.

Exactly why teams shouldn’t draft based only on potential. The next D.Miles, Telfair, K.Brown, etc. etc.
