Allen Iverson to Memphis!

by Ryne Nelson

Wow. Can I just leave it at that? Allen Iverson, the face of NBA for nearly a decade, maybe even the face of basketball as a sport, is now saying he’s ready to sign with Memphis. And we’re not talking about the college program. There’s an actual NBA team there, or so Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace continues to tell us.

The word comes from Iverson’s Twitter account, which broke the news about 33 minutes ago. Ivey started the initial shockwave with this:

God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career. I met with Mr. Heinsley, Chris Wallace and my next head coach Lionel Hollins.

And there’s this tweet:

I feel that they are committed to developing a winner and I know that I can help them to accomplish that. I feel that I can trust them.

Iverson has been talking about donning a Memphis jersey next season for a while. He said that he was close to signing with the Grizz over two weeks ago, and many reports have since confirmed the mutual interest. Given all that history, there’s no reason to distrust the tweets on this occasion.

How Iverson will fit in the mix with OJ Mayo and Rudy Gay is anyone’s guess. We just know we’ll be watching a lot more Memphis games to find out!

Don’t think it’s a good move for either him or Memphis, but I’m just happy is on an NBA roster again. Finally!

Hey Gerard, YEA!!!!!! But its still a bummer hes on a sub-.500 team :(

  • Lex

iversons done and hes not the face of basketball for the last 10 yrs thats ridiculous. hes just a fashion icon, people like his thug image.

and that was in reply to gerard…

He’s NEVER been the face of the NBA let alone basketball…give me a break. He’s never even been the best player in the league at any given time in his career.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

BTW, this is probably the most hilarious signing in the world…

  • rikson

face of basketball ?! Cmon slam, youre better than that…. or at least I thought so!

Let the grand experiment begin…maybe memphis is looking to make trades?

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Congrats on FINALLY getting on a team. Memphis is loaded with offensive weapons now. If ANYONE can average 5-6 assists on their team they should be ok.. don’t know how defense will turn out though..

  • rog123

    Ai+western conference= bad

  • rikson

Thats a ridiculous signin! But we all know AI was just flirting with memphis to get other GMs to panic. Took the risk……… and lost!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Did they change the rules to let Memphis play thier games with 2 basketballs?

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

i hope, or should i say pray, that this works out well. on the bright side: I don’t think he has anything to lose. His haters will hate anyway, and his fans will remember him for the tremendous talent that he is. nowhere to go but up.

Maybe Rudy finally convinced Stern…. But 2 balls are not enough for that grizzlies team!

  • rog123

wayno & rikson…from 96 to 2004…who was the most popular active player? who was the most controversial, and influential? What basketball player has had the most consistently successful shoe endorsement since JORDAN? Don’t let your hate cloud your noticing the OBVIOUS facts, that AI identified with the average basketball fan more than Kobe, Lebron, or Shaq EVERY could-or ever will.

  • vmcb

I’m glad its finally over, but I don’t really see this deal working out for either team. That is unless A.I. learned a lesson in humility during the off-season and will try to take on a veteran/leadership role rather than be the top dog on a team with so many black holes.

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

    wayno likes boys

  • rog123

vmcb…I think he will. He’s never been a player that WOULDN’T pass to talented teammates. Now that he has more than one decent scorer to pass to, we will see how much of his “ball hog” perception is indeed reality. I think his contributions to the game warrant him that opportunity.

    terrible move, but still.

cmon, he’s coming off the bench? Is Mephis really THAT stacked? No, OJ sit cho a– down

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ rog – I’m pretty sure that being controversial and getting shoe deals does NOT make you the face of the league, but ok…Saying he was “the most popular active player” is VERY subjective as well. The fact that AI is even mentioned as the face of basketball just shows SLAM’s EXTREME AI man-crush.

  • Ken

Finally, AI and ZBo on the same team. I can see the Grizzlies GM are serious about surrounding OJ with players he can learn from.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

i guess idc how memphis does, because they’re not going to win a ridiculous amount of games anyway. BUT i guess i’ll use them in 2K10.

  • rikson

With that definition one could argue, that rodman was the face of the league back then…. And the mancrush is easily explaned -> dollars!

  • vaara

What half-a$$ excuse for a writer calls AI the face of basketball??? RYNE NELSON!!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/NotebookNick thesubwayconnection

I completely agree here with rog123. As much as I may not be an Iverson fan, haters SHUT UP. Clearly the man’s been a large influence on the game, regardless of whether it’s been positive or negative – it’s there. Who else but him and Sheed were more responsible for the dress code? Who else do you see on the back of a Sixers jersey? Why are there “Philly” shirts with his number on them in WAL-MART?! Come on, he’s not influential. Please.

AI took the streetball-moves to the L, there is no denying that. But thats also the reason, why all the cool young kids identified with him… But Im telling you that every real bb-fan will stand with kobe in this question!

”Obviously I think he’d be a crowd pleaser in Memphis.” Memphis owner Michael Heisley . Well, somebody goes out and tells everybody who is (reasonably) dubting your bball use to his team that,’…you know what, we just needed a clown, we are losing anyway’ and you are still signing with him???!!!! You do it anyway because: a) you are starving to death(Latrell..!!) b)you are only for the money(even if it’s nothing compared to what you’ve made up to now it doesn’t matter since you got no pride to be compensated for) c)you can’t read so you don’t take notice d)you can’t think so you do whatever your manager says or e)you are A.I. @klav: C-webb was done when he got to philly. I’m talking about c-webb in sacto. Just like you’ll always remember philly when you think of ai. You’re not thinking about his nuggets stint and you definitely don’t want to remmeber detroit.

This thread will hit 200 comments within the next hour and a half…150 will be from AI fanboys (Tavoris, Pardeep, rog, chazz, etc…) and the other 50 from people who actually know something about the game of basketball (myself, rikson, cb, etc…).

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ cb – C-Webb still put up 20-10 in philly, he wasn’t done.

  • Peter

This is sad…people who do not believe Iverson had an influence on basketball beyond selling shirts, shoes and a “thug” image were obviously not watching the NBA from 1996-2004 (at least). If you weren’t there, you don’t know. He was by far the most electrifying player in the league during that span.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

You’re right Peter, Shaq and Kobe weren’t really doing that much during that time period…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Nobody is saying AI had no influence on the game or the league, but to call him “the face of basketball” is utterly rediculous.

  • tavoris

Klav 1)you got my email? 2)it’s blowing up because some people troll and hate-post EXCLUSIVELY in AI threads, hoping to rile people up. Their immaturity is unsettling…

I am ecstatic that Iverson is with the Grizzlies. If he hated being on the Pistons, I bet he will love being on a team that will win less games, and has more selfish players that want shots. Game on.

@ Rikson – That is often the theme of a Tavoris smackdown…he may also call those who disagree a “coward” or “ignorant”…just a couple examples…

  • http://slamonline.com cb 34

@wayno: With his talent c-webb could have gotten 20-10 in detroit too if he got the minutes. He was done in philly. Check the tapes. He looked old and couldn’t even move like half the man he was in sac. Everybody was hating on mike when he was with the wiz saying he’s done and all that but he was still giving us 45 and 51 even on some nights. These guys are so talented that they can hit their average numbers every night on smarts alone.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

i would have to say that different generations who watched the NBA from 98-03 associate the face of the NBA with their personal choices. since i was younger back then i identified with AI, while those mourning Jordan’s retirement could probably associate more with Kobe, and yet others who didn’t fit into either of those categories could probably see that TD was subtly dominating, but only because he received less face time because his game wasn’t as flashy or “entertaining” to the general public.

Tavoris, yeah i got it. BP3 had solid productions, but its def no Reasonable Doubt.

  • tavoris

Wayno, if you had 1/10th the basketball knowledge you CLAIM you have (which would come from playing), then you’d be so closed-minded about the man’s contribution. Sure, Kobe and Shaq were successful during that period, but hell, they both are first-ballot HOF players…players that are universally considered top-5 ALL TIME at their respective positions. In addition, they won titles with the unquestioned GREATEST COACH OF ALL TIME, with the most-efficient, hardest to guard offense. Does that take away from the fact that AI vs the Lakers was this generations David vs Goliath story? No…because there was no way in heck the Sixers were supposed to even be close to beating the Lakers. On paper, the Lakers second unit coulda swept the Sixers. But AI willed them to an epic win, just like he willed them through that entire season. Is the man without flaw? Of course not…but at least he doesn’t hide behind a PR & Legal team (Kobe, Wade, and Lebron) or create ever-changing characters to distract people from his flaws (Shaq). AI’s influence was that he showed you his scars, and didn’t apologize for having them.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

tavoris:If you have a facebook acct. peep Z-Bo’s profile pick. He leads the league in posse members.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Well said Klav…I honestly don’t think there was a clear cut “face of the NBA” during the gap between the Jordan and the Kobe/LeBron eras. It’s such a subjective title that it’s ludacris to label anyone with it during that time period.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

I am truly amazed by the amount of haters on this site when it comes to Iverson. On other websites (forums), people just don’t know any better. But the posters at SLAMonline must know better. He had ONE (1, uno) off-year. That’s it. And now people are saying “he’s done”? That’s insulting AI’s entire career. You might not like the guy, but it baffles me that so many people here can’t look at it more objectively. Again, you might not like him, but any player tat averages 26 and 7 not that long ago deserves some credit in my book.

  • tavoris

rikson, there’s a difference between posting your opinion, and posting for the sake of hating. Wayno, didn’t you just say YESTERDAY that you post the way you do just to rile people up? I’m not making this up…can get the receipts if you want.

I’m not that big of an AI fan, I always ride with Kobe, but guy has been doing his thing and keeping people watching since he came into this league. Everyone who speaks about 96-04 is right! Sure Kobe was considered the “heir apparent” but Iverson was the anti-Jordan. Everyone loved the baller who ripped up everyone. In 01, he alone almost toppled Kobe & Shaq. Every kid I knew was talking about Iverson (even back then i had to defend kobe). AI was the ish and even my mom knew that cat, sure she called him “Ive Iverson” but still dude was BALLIN!

well, I don’t think he was the “face of the NBA” either…the League didn’t really have a face to replace MJ (as nobody could). Kobe was far to aloof to ever be accepted by the younger kids. Shaq pissed off the entire east coast when he went to LA. Grant Hill was close, but then he got hurt and disappeared. Vince coulda been it, but he started mailing in his seasons in Toronto. I actually agree with every part of your 12:10 post except the last sentence. But my whole point is arguing the fact that Ryne called him the face of basketball when in fact there really was nobody around between the MJ and Kobe(post Shaq)/LeBron era who lived up to that mantra. I think Klav put it very well when he said that kids like him were very influenced by AI while others were very influenced by other great players during the same time period.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Me too Antonis, Holden vs. TP would have been fab! France just won and Parker played on virtual cruise control for a lot of the game. Russia slowed them down with the 2-3 Zone but as soon as they switched to man, the french bigs (especially Boris Diaw) and Tony’s penetration finished them. France really lives off that athletic D they play. The halfcourt sets are nearly as simple/basic as nba plays.
So, on to Spain vs. Slovenia!

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

His influence on the game is undeniable whether you appreciate his skillset or not. He WAS the face of the NBA. He’s the reason they put the dress code in. From leaning crossovers to cornrows, AI was a trendsetter and tons of people tried to emulate him. How is that even debatable? Ryne didn’t say that he was the best player in that era, just the most influential. / Now… is he going to back up the great Mike Conley is what I want to know.

  • tavoris

riggs…it’s all good…Slam’s hit counter works overtime when they write about AI. More hits, more money from the advertisers. thanks, wayno, rikson, SOFOKLIS, nbk, vonkers, etc…

  • http://slamonline.com cb 34

what if…. Mayo starts at PG, AI at 2, Gay, Randolph, and Gasol? you got Thabeet, Young, Carrol, Arthur, and Conley – you’re getting dangerously close to that 7th or 8th playoff spot.

Wayno, I’ll give you 96-98, Jordan was the league then, no question. As for Shaq and Kobe, once they came into their own around 99, they were just wrecking crew. They dominated. People were talking about no one else winning for the next decade. I’m not arguing that. But them being on the same team also held them back slightly from standing out as individuals. They were always a duo. Iverson was this little man on his own with a team of journeymen owning everyone. As a single player he was amazing to watch. Any smaller guard who came up playing basketball during that time modeled some part of their game off Iverson.

  • Peter

Also, let me clarify, by electrifying I meant there was no player you would rather watch with the anticipation of them going for 50 on any given night. It was like watching Kobe in 06/07…you didn’t want to miss it. In other words. Electrifying.

  • tavoris

Z, I think Randolph will behave, simply because the Grizz have other options at the PF (Gasol & Arthur, or even playing Gay there some). He’s hasn’t really had to compete with anyone with minutes in the last 7 or so years.

  • Dank

He was the 1st draft pick in one of the most stacked drafts ever. He lead the league in scoring at least 3 times. Anyone that says he wasn’t the face it’s their opinion. Like aholes we all have one. But it just shows this clown probably never played bball at any competitive level.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I feel ya Peter, I get where you’re coming from there. Tyron Lue comes to mind during thier finals series against Philly…that was funny buisiness right there. His individual talent is never in question, he was certainly fun to watch.

@tavoris: Randolph is a lost cause and i don’t see him trying to adjust for anybody. Let’s hope they gel well together, if not they’ll be making headlines all year long with internal fighting. Their butting heads is something we all want to see too if we’re being honest.

  • WOODY

Quit complaining that Memphis is a bad fit. It’s not a bad fit, it’s the only fit – the only team that would take him. He sure can’t hurt the team’s record this year – they can’t lose many more. He has a chance to play team ball and prove the other 27 teams are wrong. But the’re probably right and he’ll self-destruct – again. PS if you want an AI Detroit jersey I can beat Walmart’s price. Not to be a pain in the ass or anything, but most of the fools writing in this comment section said AI wouldn’t be on an NBA roster this season. Yet another portion said that he would have to play a “significantly reduced” role if he did get on a roster. Amazingly, the majority of the idiots spouting off know nothing as usual. And the SLAM guys should adjust their placement of Allen ’cause there’s no damn way a guy like Josh Smith is going to be more productive than Ai will.

SUp JE, and everyone. Memphis is facked. Iverson play the two? Is that what some are saying lol. Mayo would play the two if anything. ALLEN IVERSON is a future Hall Of Famer and has been the most entertaining player in the NBA to watch, that is why there are so many AI jerseys being worn in any arena you go to and why suddenly the Memphis games will have a huge audience!Iverson was disrespected in DETROIT, all the attention was on Stuckey. If IVERSON and RIP were used correctly the TIRED Pistons might have had a chance.Rasheed was bored, Stuckey was not ready for the responsibility and Hamilton was still whining over the loss of his BFF Billups, who obviously could not wait to go to Denver.
IVERSON deserves to be on a much stronger team BUT who knows? The chemistry might be great between him, the young talent and Zach.
One thing is for sure, ALLEN IVERSON is hungry, determined, fearless and he gives 100% in EVERY GAME!!

  • tavoris

@ SOFOKLIS…that’s very presumptuous of you. And since I’ve known the man since I was 3, I can tell you that you are GROSSLY incorrect about his literact & intelligence.
BETCATS, that’s an interesting point. However, the difference (something Joe Dumars alluded to) is that AI chose to go to Memphis. In doing so, he’s accepting responsibility for whatever happens there (wayno, remember I said that!). He had no choice in the Detroit situation. Also, Conley is a fringe starter, and his future with Memphis has been in doubt for a while now. Mayo (unlike Hamilton’s defiance and Stuckey’s smugness) has publicly been pro-Iverson all summer). I don’t think chemistry will be an issue in the backcourt.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Stuckey’s Smugness?? It’s not like he demanded to start. If people were touting you as the future of the franchise and offering a starting position you’re saying you wouldn’t take it? Especially if it was over and over the hill all-star who wasn’t in the future plans of the organization?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

That’s just stupid, and that’s what really bugs me. A milli and some change? I got mad respect for him because he’s the one who cemented basketball as an important part of my life, and to see that he would rather have more money instead of putting himself in a better situation clearly shows me he has too much pride. Too much pride to be a true winner. I’m very disappointed. Greenback stacks is the root of all evil.

But what can I say, I’m happy he’s playing so the last few years of his playing time aren’t completely wasted. Then again, it would be nice to see him mature and be the veteran guard who teaches the younger players how to be successful while being humble. His greatest attribute is his heart, but quite frankly at this point in his career it could easily be mistaken as arrogance. “When keeping it real goes wrong.” RIP Chapelle Show.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP DAY 3: not much time tonight,(but its for a good reason, if not for so many kids here i could give you more details…go to bed Eboy!!) so i will focus to the best game of the day,SPAIN-SLOVENIA. I had written that Slovenia will be one of the best teams of the tournament and they have not dissapointed up to now. The won Serbia yesterday relatively easy and tonight took a determined Spain to the limit ,giving up only after the extra 5 minutes of overtime. Although they were back 64-51 on the fourth quarter they got back after great effort from Dragic who had 6 (!!) steals in the final period. Navaro and Rudy where the best for Spain while Lakovic and Nachbar helped Dragic…at the other games Greece destroyed Israel, Turkey the hosts Poland (wake-up call for them, i told you i was waiting this a few hours ago Darksaber..)Parker,sorry, Frnce won against Russia and Latvia won but with no gain at all against a overachiving(but untalented) German team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ James – yeah the issues were unrelated, my bad.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

Then again Ryne, five years ago AI was in his prime, LeBron was still imroving, and the Lakers tried buying a championship. Much can change in five years. AI might have been better off going overseas this year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

He’s more combo gaurd than straight up SG Tavoris. He can run the point, I just wouldn’t really pick him as my starting PG at this point. In all fairness, the same criticism was thrown at Chauncey Billups early in his career. The only difference is that Chauncey could shoot and didn’t slash as much.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Better off in what respect? I’m not convinced this season will be all for naught in Memphis. I’ll be watching as much as possible. Juice Rudy and Iverson is more than enough.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

does this grizz team remind anyone of the late 90′s blazers, where they just tried to add as many big names as possible with no regard to team chemistry?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ albie – Same with NY when they had Steve Francis and Stephon Marbury.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@albie: In some ways, I think. However, the Blazers were fringe contenders, or at least a shoe-in for the playoffs, and had a bunch more veterans than these Grizzlies do.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

While I agree the Blazers are leagues better than the Grizzlies are today, I’m willing to say that Memphis will at least be better than the Thunder this season. Bet.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

Ryne, looking back at his career this season will probably be easily forgotten. He could make more money playing in Europe and as reports come in, it appears to me that he is more in demand across the pond than here (then again that’s just my speculation). But this isn’t a contract year, this is a career saving/breaking season for him and if he decided to go to Europe I think this whole fiasco would have been avoided. One year in Europe could have been a good experience for him, perhaps slightly modifying how he plays and thinks and if he had a one year deal he could very well come back for ’10-’11 and be added to a contender. I don’t know at this point, there’s too many “IFs” with AI at this point, especially with which teams wanted his services/his skills/his desire to win/etc.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Lol Ryne. That’ll be a close one. If only (the Thunder) had a Legit big man, they would be a sick team. I think Thabeet would have helped them lots this year, even though he’s really raw right now.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

@Ryne: talent wise i think grizz will be a little ahead of the team that is formerly supersonics, but you can’t count out the chemistry the young ones have at OKC. i guess what it comes down to is who will handle game-end situations better.

He could have signed with the Bobcats.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I didn’t know that playing on a team headed to the playoffs was a criteria for this list. Since, you know, Kevin freaking Martin is better than AI. I just hope he drops a cool 22-23 ppg to silence the critics.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Ryne you are nuts. Jeff Green and Russel Westbrook are better then Rudy G@y and OJ Mayo. Kristic is better then Gasol. Harden is better then Z-Bo. Durant is about 1000x better then Iverson AT THIS POINT IN HIS CAREER. Plus Thabo, Nick Collison, Kyle Weaver,DJ White, Serge Ibaka, BJ Mullens, Shaun Livingston, Robert Varden, and Etan Thomas is a bench that is beyond solid. Add that to Scott Brooks, who is a rising star in the coaching side of the game (HIS PLAYERS ALL RESPECT/LIKE/LISTEN TO HIM) and it looks like a foolish statement to say the disfunctional mess that is the Grizzlies will be better. The Grizzlies, whose stated goal is to suck (yes they said it is better bussiness for them to lose games) will not win more games then OKC. Bet.

    Ryne,

Twitter trumps the press once again :) As more of these guys take to tweeting (see: high school star Kyrie Iriving’s future announcement on twitter) the press will have to find more creative ways to get the scoop.

As for the move he doesn’t seem to fit in to the team’s plans. Perhaps they need a locker room guy. AI seems to have matured over the years. Or have I have been Knicks and Cavs centric to notice otherwise ;)

It’s interesting how this post has brought country mo’fo’s (wayno) and forners (that guy whose name sounds like syphilis) together. You probably wouldn’t catch them at a tractor pull, eating baklava together. You might catch them “doing the greek” with one another, though.

Thanks for using my photoshop SLAM !

    wish i was credited…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Okay BET, Jeff Green and Russell Westbrooke are NOT better than OJ Mayo and Rudy Gay. Let’s make that clear. Do they mesh together a lot better? Yes they do. That’s probably why the Thunder are potentially better than the Grizzlies. They have a dedicated young core that contains good team chemistry and a coach they all love. And all the players know that their offensive output is playing second fiddle to Kevin Durant. At this point, OJ Mayo and Rudy Gay are still kind of battling to see who’s the better leader at the offensive end.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Of course, its pretty close so I’m just stating my opinion.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Don’t worry Wayno, I didn’t call YOU stupid, personally.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Now on a roster. This is good if they trade him 3 games in like everyone’s favorite season, one removed. His salary isn’t enough to be traded for SHAQ! though. If Rudy Gay still wants to be an All Star, they have to trade Iverson. And what team won’t entertain bringing him in when his deal is up at the end of the year, just for some playoff risk to improve the team going in/trying to make it/put them over their conference rival matchups/as the trade dealine approaches and they want some All Star break publicity?

    If not, Z-Boned.

  • http://slamonline.com B-Moore

Too many muthauckas uckin with his shhhhh………

Here’s hoping… AI leads with Grizzlies to the playoffs and all GMs fall in love with him and next year he is willing to accept a back-up role somewhere and get the ring he deserves.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

LOL Wayno thinks A.I. was not the best player in the league at any time? WOW. Its hard to say best player ever year because there were two guys named Duncan and Shaq but in 1999 Iverson was the best guard, 2000 Iverson was the best guard, 2001 Iverson was the best guard and best player,2002 Iverson was the best player and guard, 2003 Iverson was the best guard and maybe player (him or kobe.) 2004 Iverson was top 3 players. 2005 I think he was the best player in the league averaging 30 and 8 and easily best guard. 2006 He queitly averaged 33 and 8 and was the second best player in the league. 2007 went to a Nuggets team and was arguably a top 8 player and in 2008 I think he was top 5 players in the league aveargin 26.4 ppg, 7.1 apg, 2.2 steal and shooting 46 percent. 2009 He was not the best though or even top 10 because the Pistons didn’t know how to use one of the greatest players ever. Wayno quit hating, there is article Scoop Jackson go read that and Im sure you will be able to the part where he talks about why Iverson is hated by people like you. (braids, tats (tattos as you would say.), Hip-hop culture.) The Grizz could be a bad fit for AI but who knows what will happened?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

and Yeah Kobe just took the league over completely since 2005-2006.

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    Chintao with da zingerrrrrrr!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

This is comedy to me as I don’t see how all three of these amigos are going to get any touches. I hope AI just comes in as a leader and doesn’t try to make this his team…hold up what am I saying? This is AI we are talking about! Rudy or OJ just better be ready to give up some touches and lots of them. I predict the grizz will win around 30-35 games. play wit it.

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

Pardeep: 2001-2003 T-Mac would like a word with you. 2006 Lebron James and Dwayne Wade would like a word with you. 2002-2004 Kevin Garnett would like a word with you. 2000-2003 Jason Kidd would like a word with you. Lord, Dirk and Nash would like a word in their later years too.

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

Iverson was maybe top 5 during some of the 2001-2005. He was the most VALUABLE player at times, but certainly not best.

  • neo

    WAYNO, A.I lover.

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

For the Record, the Bobcats could not guarantee AI sufficient playing time, let alone a starting position. ITS not JUST about the money (although it truly is in most cases). AI wants to start. Larry Brown has stated himself that they need to make playing time for Felton and Augustine (and Bell). Although I think he would have had it better in NY, Charlotte and even possibly Miami (not as much as the first 2), what’s done is done. Now we just see how things will turn out.

  • iLL wiLL

    This is just wrong.

Between AI and Mayo, will the ball have enough air to stay inflated?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Iverson was the best player in 2001. So… he would like a word with you, Jukai.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Yeah Jukai AI was the best in 2001

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

The first 100/150 comments were almost entirely trash.
BTW, to JE, I think the majority of the regular posters have taken self-inforced absences the last 2 weeks or so because of the top 50. It’s just not worth arguing over AGAIN, like we have the last 5 years.
And I’m happy with Allen, if he’s happy, then really, that’s all that should matter.

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Top 50 = needs to be retired. New cool Slamonline gimmick please

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

AI was the best in 2001? Really?
    Let’s take a look.
AI put up 31.1 points a game with 42@ shooting (32% from the three) and had 3.8 rebounds, 4.6/3.34 assist/turnover ratio with 2.5 steals and nominal blocks. He logged an insane 42 minutes a game. Great stat line.
Shaq dropped 28.7 a game with an insane 57% shooting, grabbing 12.7 boards along with a 3.7/2.95 assist/turnover ratio (.9 assists less than Iverson), along with 2.8 blocks. He did this in less minutes than Iverson.
Duncan scored 25.3 points a game with 50% shooting, grabbing 12.7 boards, a 3.7/2.9 assist/turnover ratio and 2.5 blocks a game. He did this in less minutes than Iverson.
Those two come to mind when dealing with people better than Iverson, yes, even in 2001.
Would I admit Iverson is even top three?
    No.
Let’s take a look at our forgotten friend T-Mac.
26.8 points on 45% shooting (with 35% from the three). 7.5 boards, as many assists but far less turnovers (4.6 assists to 2.57 turnovers), 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks. All in less minutes.
So, if I had to, I’d say Iverson was the fourth best player in 2001.
He was obviously the most valuable, by a long shot. That’s why he won MVP.
But he wasn’t the best. That wasn’t even Iverson’s best year.

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

I also forgot to mention the defensive differences between even a young, spry AI to defensive stalwarts like Duncan and Shaq (T-Mac was an okay defender as well!)

  • http://kingslayer.wordpress.com The Kingslayer

They have this place called NBA.com where they have stats. So I won’t get into how A.I. in the years sans this idea he couldn’t play with others was averaging 7 assits dropping 20 +. He threw that nonsense out the window years ago. Haters just want to perpetuate the slander, not the facts.

Is Memphis a good fit for Allen? In a scary way yes. What has to be the corner stone is defense. If they can commit to that I believe they will do better than we think. Memphis played hard last year, they didn’t just wallow along. OJ if in a better market could have been co rookie. He did that well. The idea that both he and A.I won’t work is dumb. OJ can dish and score, so can A.I. A.I. needs to make things a bit easier for the team. How? Bring in some real leadership so they can grow. Its not about his skills, its about inspiration. Effort will be there so long as A.I is breathing.

  • Cmac

he’ll shut the haters up this year. and yeah he ruled the league in 01

  • al

    God bless poor Marc Gasol

  • karan

    “memphis? we’re talking about memphis?”

  • its gucci

the grizzlies HAVE to switch their lineup to MAYO, IVERSON, GAY, RANDOLPH, GASOL!!! doesnt sound that bad.

    “Who he play for?”

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

    “Iverson has left the building!”

Now Bubba Chuck gets questions on liking Elvis music @ least during All Star weekend media days by SLAM’s representatives this year?

  • Yesse

I come on Iverson the face of the Nba?He doesnt even have a ring.Besides its Jerry West’s body on the logo and his face is painted.

  • http://eric32woodyard.wordpress.com Eric Woodyard

I can’t to see AI in that Memphis uni! I hope he can give the fans one last 20+ season b4 he retires

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

and then you have people wondering why Ricky don’t wanna come and play in the NBA if not in his terms…look what happened to Marc Gasol: instead of playing in Barcelona (one of the most beatiful cities in the world) for one of the best teams in the world and for much more money he ends up play in memphis, at a lesser team ,for less money….on top of that he will have now to co-exist with a guy that is not half the player that he is (nobody in the league&in Europe wanted A.I. as a player except Memphis that admitted that they took him as “a crowd pleaser”. At the same time half the league&everybody in Europe would like to have Marc Gasol in their rotation ) but at the same time will demand to take more shots than the much better Marc….this draft system should change as soon as possible or the league will be slowly deprived from some of the best talent in the world….why would somebody like Motiejunas for example choose to go to Minesota or Detroit instead of sunny and beatifull Spain or Greece…?

  • tavoris

SOFOKLIS, as soon as the US economy recovers (which it’s on its way to now), Europe will go back to being a popular destination for MARGINAL NBA talents. Wait a minute…Josh Childress, Janerro Pargo, Carlos Delfino-it already is.

  • Josh D

God chose Memphis 4 AI? If only Ricky Rubio thought the same

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

If winning MVP = being the best player in the league, why did anyone other than Michael Jordan win MVP in the 90′s? Jukai gave a very good breakdown debunking anyone’s argument that AI has ever been the best player in the league at any given time. He was top 5 for a few years, but that’s it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Oh, he definitely was the most valuable in 01…I’l give him that for sure.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

People like Pardeep that think I hate AI because he has braids, tats, brought hip-hop culture etc make me laugh…that all they can say because they’ve exhasted all of thier arguments…fyi, I like hip-hop, have tats, and Rasheed Wallace is one of my favorite players of the last decade (but wait, didn’t he have braids?!?!). The fact of the matter is that I don’t hate AI, I just happen to think he is not and has never been a winner. I’ve loved watching him and I respect his talent and what he’s done for the game. I just think all his fanboys blow all that he did WAY out of proportion.

  • http://deleted landyn15

Wow, thats crazy….but iverson mayo and gay on a team should be decent

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

@Jukai: I’d say AI was the best, or at least could be argued as the best, in either 04/05 or 05/06.
Nash may have been more valuable because of team success, but AI put up 31/8 with 2.4spg in 04/05.
In 05/06, Kobe had his 35.4/5.3/4.5. Hard to argue with that. But many forget AI put up 33/7.4/3.2 with 2spg shooting at the same fg% clip. It’s not a non-debatable matter.
Was he ever the clear-cut best player in the L? Probably not. But those who immediately write him off as never being part of the discussion of the game’s best — well, I get where you stand.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Jukai: Right, because we really need to consider the FG% of a player like Shaq, who doesn’t shoot anywhere out of five feet from the basket. T-Mac was the best player in the league at one point, but it wasn’t the 2001 season.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Wayno, you might as well call Dominique Wilkins a scrub because he never won a championship. Your argument that a player isn’t great until he wins a championship is bull.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Marc Gasol took on a responsibility for Memphis through that nearly stealing exchange between the Lakers and Grizz, making sure it wasn’t completely stealing by NBA rules. And also helped his brother with that too, earning him a better place to play and salary. Nobody is crying for Marc or Ricky’s two-faced BS, and they do not have to.
    -
Stop “Co-signing” rikson then Wayno, because check his posts, more “thug thugging thuggery” than Mark Cuban’s.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ teddy – I didn’t say it wasn’t because he didn’t win a championship, I said it’s because I don’t think he’s a winner. He’s had a me-first attitude for most of his career and he doesn’t elevate the games of those around him. I’m talking about the majority of his career as a whole, he has not been a winner. He’s had very little team success. The only way he helps his teams is with his stats, which don’t get me wrong, have been amazing, but on top of the fact that he has had a BAD influence on some of the younger players he’s played with (JR Smith anyone?), he hasn’t displayed much as far as leadership abilities go either.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Oh yeah Bling – I don’t support everything that rikson says, I just happened to agree with some of his posts on this thread.
