Antawn Jamison’s Championship Vision

by Marcel Mutoni

The Washington Wizards were decimated by injuries last year, won less than 20 regular season games, and failed to qualify for the Playoffs. If they can stay healthy next season, and maybe even win a series in the postseason, it would have to be considered a major success.

That wouldn’t be good enough for Antawn Jamison. The Wizards’ leader has much loftier goals.

The Washington Post reports:

“I’ve been around here for six years and championship talk wasn’t a norm around our locker room. That’s all we’re talking about now,” Jamsion said, with less than two weeks remaining before training camp. “If we stay healthy, I think we can compete with the upper echelon of the NBA.”

“I don’t care,” Jamison said. “What you mean raising the bar too high? We won 19 games last year and I’ll be honest with you, we didn’t have a lot of our horses. But I don’t have anything else to play for. I’m not going to sit here and sugar coat things because it’s not the right thing to say. I believe it.”

Everyone around the Wiz insists that Gilbert Arenas is all the way back, and should that be the case, it’d be good enough for this team to return to the postseason. But a championship?

Sorry, Antawn. Your team simply doesn’t have the horses to go all the way. Good attitude, though.

Why not? They’re among the deepest teams in the NBA. I think their offensive firepower is unparalleled.

  • MalanaCream

    be happy with the playoffs..

  • neaorin

Ah, September. The only time when half the teams are legit contenders.

WHAT!!!! This is straight crazy talk.. 5th or less in the East, no chance of getting to the Eastern Conference Finals… Your champion vision must be BLURRY!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/NotebookNick thesubwayconnection

They’re pretty deep in the backcourt. But up front? Who’ve they got outside of him?

  • http://myspace.com/mavus15 Mavus

    Straight Stevie Wonder vision..

but how can Memphis AND Washington win in the same year?!?!?!

  • j

they will make the playoffs but they wont b a contender even with a healthy gilbert and caron butler

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

If everyone is healthy they could definitely get into the playoffs, but a championship run is probably out of the question (has Antawn heard of Boston, Cleveland, and Orlando?). It could get interesting, however, as the Wizards have had intense playoff battles with the Cavs, and they have given the Celtics trouble during the season too.

Hey Jamison, can i get the digits for your dealer? I need some of that psychadelic sh*t you seem to be smoking.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

The Wiz are destined for yet another first round defeat to the LeBrons.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

as a competitor, i can see why he would say that. best case scenario is they finish 4th and win their first round matchup to get annihiliated in the 2nd round by boston, cleveland or orlando. sorry. the only above average defender on the team is caron and even he is not that great.

  • iamse7en

Z, it’s obvious you don’t watch Wizards basketball. First off, Caron is a bad defender. Next, Deshawn is the only above average PERIMTER defender, and again, he isn’t that great. Haywood is a great defender.

    Our defense will struggle.

But we’ll be one of the top offensive teams in the country. For that reason, Jamison seeks a championship. We match up well with Boston. We beat their championship team 3 times, and we beat the Cavs 3-1 this past season with an awful team.

The only team I fear in the playoffs is Orlando. We have no answers to Dwight.

Watch Wizards basketball and you’ll be more capable of making true statements.

Yo shun…shun…I got crazy visions shun…check it out…

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Can a new coach in Flip Saunders change things for them defensively?

  • Jacqueline Mitchell

If they can get 30 to 40 + wins, then I’ll believe they can make the playoffs.( And that’s a BIG if ).

  • riggs

who the hell gave antawn kanye’s cup

    Too bad he sucks.

  • TADOne

Flip “I choke in the playoffs” Saunders should be really ecstatic after hearing these words.

  • scrappy

Who thought Orlando would be in the Finals last year???

Honest Answer: Outside of Orlando’s locker room, NO ONE.

If you look at things soberly…the Wiz CAN compete with the top 3 in the conference…not because I think so, but because they’ve done it (when healthy)… Add some depth and development of some young role players…it is not a ludicrous goal. It may be lofty (and perhaps improbable), but a championship is not a ridiculous proposition.

  • tavoris

is he supposed to say anything else?

the wizards don’t play a lick of defense and they won’t be taken seriously until they do. if everyone is healthy, they should be able to score with pretty much anyone in the league. that’ll get them to the playoffs, maybe to the second round. but no further.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

iamse7ven, 1- wash has always been able to score the ball, this is nothing new. and yet, they’ve never made it past the 2nd round with this group. what has changed? foye and miller? 2- didn’t the cavs eliminate the wiz like 56 years in a row in the playoffs? they have no answer for lebron either. i think you should fear more than orlando. 3- again, this is the same washington team + 2 decent players and now we’re talking championships? please. orlando actually plays defense, there are no comparisons to be made.

  • tavoris

maybe having all this offensive firepower (they really had NO bench scoring before) will give Gil, Caron, and Jamison the freedom to buckle down on D a little more.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

With the talent they have on that team, just making the playoffs should be a disappointment. I’m not saying they’re title contenders, but it’s certainly a reasonable goal to have as a leader of the team.

  • la huey

figured someone should say it. also, have they even made it past the first round in the arenas era?

  • luv2ball

Haywood is a great defender? hahahahahahahahahah that was a good one

  • J-City

This team will surprise alot of people, especially if the big 3 are healthy. Very underrated moves as well adding Foye and Mike Miller. Foye was really comming into this own last year, and will provide much needed scoring off the bench they didn’t have last year. Nick Young so far is looking much better versus last year too, let’s see if he can replicate what Rip Hamilton did. What they’re missing is quality big men. Brenda just isn’t going to cut it, and Mcgee is still too young. Basically this team can score, but can’t defend for crap. Works in the regular season, not the playoffs.

  • Hangtime Hec

I love Harlem’s allusion to Glaciers of Ice. Scrappy has a point, who in there right mind thought the freaken Orlando magic were going to make the finals in october? Non of you. This team is going to be like maimi of last year but better. Catch everyone by surprise and win some games.

  • kobesbestfriend

any1 playing the wizards in the 1st round can conider it a bye…no way they beat clev, bos, orl,or mia in a 7 game series!!!

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Get your eyes checked Antawn….same with the rest of your sorry wizards squad.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

Do they even have a friggin PG??

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

@la huey: yes, against Chicago. Twice if I’m not mistaking.

  • JRay

Dutch Rich- Wow, only gilbert arenas

  • http:///realcavsfans.com Anton

Obama will not give them a presidential pardon for sucking.

  • J the Drafter

Relatively recent Magic fan here. (Just to give perspective, I hopped on the bandwagon after reading Dwight’s blog post about the Kobe-LeBron commercials and being disrespected. I watched nearly all the Magic games from Game 4 Cleveland on.) Antawn’s dream is captivating, to be frank. I’ll try to follow your progress this year, along with Orlando’s, and I’ll be rooting for you to go far. Here’s to a great season, and becoming darkhorse contenders!

is he supposed to say anything else?
    both teams played hard?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I really can’t see this team getting over the hump TWICE…seriously, they have to go through atleast ONE of Cleveland, Orlando and Boston if not two of them PLUS they will have to play the Western Conference champ for the trophy. (I would love to say that will be the Suns but to keep common decency before my peers I will refrain for now…)

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

I think the Wiz can do things this season. They have a lot of talent and depth, especially after bringing in Foye and Mike Milly. We’ll have to see how Gibert re-assimilates and how they maximize the talent they have. Seriously though, just look at these names:
    Gilbert Arenas
    Mike Miller
    Caron Butler
    Antwan Jamison
    Brendan haywood
    Randy Foye
    Nick Young
    JaVale McGee
    Dominic McGuire

To me the only question will be whether they can defend at a high enough level to win come playoff time, when the game slows down.
But personally, I’m really rooting for the Wizards. They’re such a fun team to watch, so much personality. I think they could get the 4th seed and maybe even make it to the ECF…

  • frank castle

    not without a centre

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

heres a note, last season Gilbert Arenas averaged a double double!
Sure he only played in 2 games but its something?!

  • David S

Arenas will have an All NBA season, the Wizards will reclaim a playoff birth, however Boston and Cleveland are levels head of other teams in the East

  • nobs6669

as a team it’s a positive attitude that he go publicly about winning a championship. every season every team every player should have this attitude. i hate team saying that their going on a rebuilding stage. so what’s the used of spending millions on their roster and they don’t believe they would win. as a player it’s annoying and it means they don’t believe at my capabilities. y don’t they try to win games so they could build confidence that they could win a championship no matter what they have.
