Delonte West Arrested for Handgun Possession

by Ryne Nelson

Delonte Maurice West is his full name, and you have to figure it’s being used often. It’s in a Prince George’s Country, MD arrest warrant statement. And his mother definitely howled the dreaded middle name in his ear this morning: “DELONTE MAURICE!!

Delonte is nothing short of an interesting subject. But he’s usually making noise for his comedy, not for off-court transgressions. But the news is here — Delonte West just got bagged last night for a gun. WUSA, a television station in Washington D.C., reported the story:

Prince Georges County Police say that Delonte West, a starting guard for the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, was arrested at 10PM, September 17, 2009, for possession of two handguns and a shotgun.

Prince Georges Police say West was stopped for unsafe lane changing while riding his Can Am Spyder motorcycle, northbound on I-495 at Central Avenue.

Police say that officers found that West had two handguns and a shotgun in his possession and arrested him. West, police add, was very cooperative.

So that’s the facts. Now… how did he manage to carry a shotgun on this bike (below)?

I wouldn’t have been surprised if he was riding naked with a bucket of chipotle sauce in his lap. Delonte’s cool in my book.

  • Mr.416 Posted: Sep.18 at 3:57 pm
    BANG BANG

  • niQ Posted: Sep.18 at 3:59 pm
I guess riding shotgun means something different when you drive a motorcycle.. or if you’re Delonte West.

  • chiqo Posted: Sep.18 at 4:00 pm
when the coaches told him to work on his shooting in the offseason, this was not what they had in mind.

  • tavoris Posted: Sep.18 at 4:00 pm
i wonder how the Cavs fans will spin this one in the comments

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: Sep.18 at 4:07 pm
    DAMN.

  • LA Huey Posted: Sep.18 at 4:09 pm
so was he carrying the handguns in holsters and the shotgun strapped to his back?…looks like Delonte was off his meds again.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Sep.18 at 4:11 pm
Huey, it had to be strapped on his back, right? By the way, that bike is dope!

  • vmcb Posted: Sep.18 at 4:12 pm
He probably looked like he came straight outta an action flick riding that thing with a shotgun strapped to his back. Badassssssssssssssssss.

  • Lucas Posted: Sep.18 at 4:14 pm
Terrible news for the cavs, now Daniel Gibson may have to step up his game to another level… Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

  • mike Posted: Sep.18 at 4:16 pm

  • doyouwantmore Posted: Sep.18 at 4:36 pm
LOL @ chiqo’s comment. I can understand being a young millionaire and needing a bit of protection but…two handguns and a freakin’ shotgun?! It bothers me to know that he’s riding around on public streets like that.

  • Wayno Posted: Sep.18 at 4:41 pm
I can understand riding around with ONE gun maybe…but that’s overkill…better yet, just don’t cruise around with guns…idiot.

  • luv2ball Posted: Sep.18 at 4:45 pm
It didn’t say if he had a license or not. But I think PG county has a no concealment law anyway. Be glad he didn’t get caught in D.C. (as he was pulled over at the border) they have tough handgun laws there.

  • ShoeNut Posted: Sep.18 at 4:45 pm
    He must be going hunting.

  • Royal Posted: Sep.18 at 4:50 pm
Trust me, he needs to have a gun on him at all times when he is in P.G County

  • Brad Posted: Sep.18 at 4:54 pm
He deserves to get absolutely nailed for this…that is insane riding around like he’s the Terminator!!

  • vmcb Posted: Sep.18 at 5:00 pm
According to Skeets, “West had a Beretta in his waistband, a Ruger .357 strapped to his leg & a shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back”. Hot damn.

  • rico Posted: Sep.18 at 5:04 pm
Don’t blame him….always be strapped especially when you’re a high profile celeb like delonte, peeple be gunnin!

  • rico Posted: Sep.18 at 5:05 pm
i bet if delonte wan’t 100% black cop woulda left him alone….racial profiling doesn’t stop.

  • miller126 Posted: Sep.18 at 5:07 pm
The ol’ gun in the guitar case. Damn Delonte, only vintage ’95 Antonio Banderas (Desperado) can pull that off!

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.18 at 5:08 pm
    Sometimes we do chipostleeeeeeeee

  • izzo Posted: Sep.18 at 5:08 pm
    Idiot!

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.18 at 5:09 pm

  • Myles Brown Posted: Sep.18 at 5:14 pm
The Cavs are supposed to be in Minnesota during the first week of the season. I had full intentions of giving Delonte a KFC or Chipotle gift card. If hes suspended, I will be beyond depressed.

  • ClydeSays Posted: Sep.18 at 5:21 pm
What the? 2 Handguns AND a shotgun? On a motorcycle? Where did he even put them? Stuffed down his jacket? I love West’s hustle & sense of humor, but this, besides his collection of bad tats, is the dumbest isht he’s ever pulled. Got to be a fine & suspension in this, assuming the Cavs don’t can him…

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.18 at 5:29 pm
Myles, you’d be my hero if you actually do that

  • luv2ball Posted: Sep.18 at 5:30 pm
@Royal I co-sign that. Especially in Fort Washington, District Heights, Mt. Ranier areas

  • CSP8 Posted: Sep.18 at 5:54 pm
Yea PG County ain’t what it used to be. Being from DC, there was a time when it was almost a dream to get out and move to Maryland. But now, thats my last option. lol Trust me it’s bad when someone from DC says they dont want to live there.

  • Klav Posted: Sep.18 at 5:55 pm
Hold up, I think he was going to get vengeance on the dude that gave him herpes. Just sayin…

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.18 at 6:06 pm
    He was out hunting vampires

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Sep.18 at 6:11 pm
this is such an odd story. A bit too Grand Theft Auto for me. 2 handguns, a shotgun riding around on a bike like that???

  • James the balla Posted: Sep.18 at 6:12 pm
lol funny comments today. WHat the he11 is heartland saying? Until someone clears that up for me I am going to assume Heartland agrees that he should have been carrying the weapons? And I don’t me converse.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Sep.18 at 6:13 pm
    new nickname: Wild Wild West?

  • Kevin Posted: Sep.18 at 6:24 pm
Delonte was on some Rambo ish. 3 guns with one strapped to his leg and a shotty in a guitar case? Litebrite gets a hood pass with me

  • gmoney Posted: Sep.18 at 6:24 pm
did he use to play for boston??

  • Kadavour Posted: Sep.18 at 6:30 pm
Plax set the precedent. This fool should get an automatic two years. F*cking idiot.

  • Shotty in the guitar case? Delonte “Desperado” West it is.

  • Duncan21 Posted: Sep.18 at 6:48 pm
damn, I wanna kick it with Delonte if he riding like that!

  • RickyRude Posted: Sep.18 at 7:21 pm
niq and chicko’s comments made me laugh out loud. damn. good job fellas. delonte is hard.

  • DP Posted: Sep.18 at 8:45 pm
Well at least he wasn’t like the king of the south. cav fans should be happy for that. play wit it.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Sep.18 at 9:10 pm
Dammit Lonte. Leave the shotty at home!

  • ciolkstar Posted: Sep.18 at 9:12 pm
Shotgun in a guitar case? Who does he think he is, Desperado?

  • ciolkstar Posted: Sep.18 at 9:14 pm
man, Boing beat me to it. Shoulda read all the comments.

  • Z Posted: Sep.18 at 9:28 pm
Either people are after him and that’s a problem or he’s p-noid and that’s a problem. He needs help. That’s just crazy to pack heat like that.

  • NBA kid Posted: Sep.18 at 9:33 pm
This just in: Shaq goes to protect John Connor.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Sep.18 at 10:16 pm
delonte will from now on be “el mariachi”

  • Kevin Posted: Sep.18 at 10:43 pm
On the real though, I think the police saved somebody life. I think Delonte was out to catch a body, you know how light skinned dudes gotta prove how tough they is haha

antonio banderas was just playing delonte west in that movie

  • Z Posted: Sep.19 at 2:25 am
West has said he suffers from bipolar disorder and has been open with his battle with mood swings and depression. Last season he left the Cavs for several weeks during training camp to get treatment for depression and was on medication at the time.

  • BC24 Posted: Sep.19 at 2:26 am
I can’t believe Delonte West thinks he is hard and is a thug. Too bad he’s not as hard on the court as he is off it.

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.19 at 2:29 am
Ding Dong: “is your name Sarah Connor”? *BLAST*. c’mon, Delonte was out & about trying to protect Cybernet’s interests. Oh, and that stupid thing qualifies as a Motorcycle? Please…

  • Yesse Posted: Sep.19 at 2:51 am
How come Delonte came a little thug in the last season. He got some tattoos and thinks he is tough.

  • Anton Posted: Sep.19 at 2:52 am
BC24 fails like Odom at marriage. Delonte, 6’2″, was the Cavs’ best post player, played hard every single game, never gave up in the playoffs, sacrificed his body (broke his hand going for a block), and was an all around grind it out hard worker.

  • Joey E. Posted: Sep.19 at 2:53 am
    he did have depression, remember?

  • QaSaNovA Posted: Sep.19 at 3:16 am
Cmon..you’d think these rich athletes would just not ride motorcycles and could easily hire the best 24/7 bodyguard service who would be permitted to carry firearms…common sense just isn’t that common nowadays. Plus, Delonte is really not thaaat hardbody anyways.

  • eugene Posted: Sep.19 at 3:49 am
He was riding to hund David Stern ))))

  • Blinguo Posted: Sep.19 at 3:56 am
He won’t get rehabbed but Beasley AKA Super Cool Beas(unglasses) is under informal lockdown, suicide watch and such.
    -
What this didn’t say was if he was under the influence of something and decided to MadMax on the freeway. Glad he cooperated and was probably happy to do so (downers and not uppers kinda influence?) and not ‘Delonte shot down on freeway’ since sometimes that happens even when someone was found with no weapons – instead like a phone, then is justified as “he was reaching for something.”
    -
And Mike ‘Grimace’ Brown has no hair to pull out over this!

  • Blinguo Posted: Sep.19 at 3:56 am
Go the Stephen Jax route, praying hands gun tat on the chest, “Because I pray I never have to use it again.”

  • AB_40 Posted: Sep.19 at 4:29 am
well time to trade him for another guy who likes guns… stephen jackson

  • Anton Posted: Sep.19 at 4:53 am
Unfortunately, there is more sh*t to be released about this.
    A sad panda, I am.

  • Blinguo Posted: Sep.19 at 5:40 am
Stay up Delonte Chipotle Chicken Mayne.
I had to cop some Chipotle Cholula sauce seeing it on the shelf @ the supermarket last night, highly recommended – smooth smokey flavor, immediately remembered the viral video masterpiece, even the Kingston Jamaica dude at the end.

  • JodythePresidioRecLegend Posted: Sep.19 at 5:44 am
This dude has no excuse to be going all gunfrickenho depression or not. I mean where are the lines going to be drawn.. he was very cooperative.. what was he going to do have a shoot out with the police.. I bet he is feeling like the jackass that he is right about now.. dude will always be a jackass.. there are better players then him in the D league who can handle themselves in the ghetto with looking like a fricken assassian

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.19 at 6:29 am
The title of this is a tad bit deceiving: shouldn’t it state “Delonte arrested for walking around strapped like a goddamn one man army”?

  • larry bird Posted: Sep.19 at 8:58 am
This just in, arnold schwarzennager awarding delonte west with the california medal of valor, for foilling the machines once again/

  • Wayno Posted: Sep.19 at 9:18 am
Somebody call Dwight Howard I think he’s in danger!

  • Wayno Posted: Sep.19 at 9:19 am
additionally, Delonte had a tommy gun in a violin case…

  • tavoris Posted: Sep.19 at 11:26 am
had Delonte West officially stolen the “craziest guy in the NBA” title with the summer he’s had? His youtube vids are hilarious (and revealing, in hindsight)

  • vmcb Posted: Sep.19 at 11:26 am
    hah @ NBA kid

  • slamfan4life Posted: Sep.19 at 12:06 pm
OH MY GOSH, HE’S THE STARTING POINTGUARD NOW?

  • zappp Posted: Sep.19 at 1:33 pm
Actually the shotgun wasnt strapped in his back. it was in a guitar case.. u know, old gangsta style!

  • Anton Posted: Sep.19 at 1:38 pm
^no, he’s taking his Shooting Guard role very seriously.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.19 at 2:21 pm

Great article on the bleacher report about how other athletes should be just like Delonte West

  • slamfan4life Posted: Sep.19 at 2:41 pm
    not according to this article

  • Jacqueline Mitchell Posted: Sep.19 at 8:02 pm
Why on earth did Delonte need all those guns? What or who is he afraid of? (Besides Cavaliers management).

  • BostonBaller Posted: Sep.19 at 9:40 pm
Just simple dumb. Just as dumb as having dozens of tats. lol

  • BostonBaller Posted: Sep.19 at 9:55 pm
Let’s wait until everything comes out…What does Delonte have to be depressed about other than fewer shoots on the horizon w/ Big Shaq in town? Can we not start the profiling mess? He was violating the law and got pulled over then was found to have weapons illegally (or he wouldn’t have been arrested). The Cavs will have some fun photo shoots this year.

I’ll repeat myseld: he could be p-noid. he has a history of mental health issues. OR people could be after him. remember tinsley in indy? the denver broncos dudes? if you look like a g, act like a g and hang where the g’s at… gangsta ish will happen to you.

  • zachsmart Posted: Sep.20 at 12:38 am
shame to see this… I thought the only heat he was carrying was hotsauce in my bag, hotsauce in my bagggg We been waiting 18 minutes on the chickennnn

  • Sarah Posted: Sep.20 at 1:36 am
The ESPN crawl said the shotgun was in a guitar case. Sounds like something from out of a movie.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.20 at 1:46 am
Delonte West was on some El Mariachi joint with this one.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.20 at 1:47 am

He carries gun, so he intends to shoot somebody, self defence or not, outcome is the same, someone dies. Mad dogs need to be locked away.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.20 at 7:01 am
    Anton for the win!

Stories like this remind me why living in England may not be quite so bad after all. I don’t see Wayne Rooney being caught in similar circumstances any time soon. Messing round with granny-whores is an entirely different kettle of fish mind!

West’s father, Dmitri West, said, “All I can say is Delonte was looking behind his back and protecting himself.” He said his son was looking out for both specific people and because he was generally concerned about his well-being as a high-profile athlete. He declined to say who might be targeting the NBA star.
“Bottom line is there’s a lot of not-too-nice people out here,” Dmitri West said.

  • Dacre Posted: Sep.20 at 7:27 pm
I though you could have guns in the states?

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Sep.20 at 8:10 pm
there are forces trying to change that dacre. if they succeed there will be revolution. in the past year, gun and ammo sales have skyrocketed. the people are preparing because they see the evil forces preparing. el mariachi should just hire pro security

100 comments on a non-iverson/kobe/lebron post? Delonte is the ish

  • WOODY Posted: Sep.21 at 12:17 am
I love that, If he carries a gun, “he intends to shoot somebody”. How about he carries a gun to protect himself or his family from the really bad guys they have in that area.

  • Dacre Posted: Sep.21 at 1:40 am
I wonder with the amount of trouble that seems to be surrounding this guy, if we might see the first NBA player shot dead?

  • chiqo Posted: Sep.21 at 2:33 am
hey woody, him protecting himself with loaded guns would still involve him shooting somebody, would it not?

  • Darksaber Posted: Sep.21 at 4:18 am
How cool is it that his dad’s named DMITRI WEST. Does he say “comrade” too when adressing friends?

  • heartlandG Posted: Sep.21 at 9:24 am
I never knew you not havin beef will give you a pass of somebody runnin up on you…@ James hell yeah he shulda been strapped…a lil excessive?? u could argue dat but ni99as shootin CHOPPAS !!!

  • JDH21 Posted: Sep.21 at 2:03 pm
I heard he had the shotgun in a guitar case. That would make sense too, since how else would you ride that bike with a shotgun?

  • Kirk Posted: Sep.22 at 5:51 pm
If you people don’t know PG County aint no joke you need to have protection. I know Delonte and his fam and if you’re around that area by the way that’s where he is from you need to protect yourself.
