Felton and the Bobcats in a Stalemate

Raymond and his employer can’t seem to agree on the terms of a contract extension: “It hasn’t changed much for the better,’ agent Kevin Bradbury said of negotiations with the front office. “We’ve had conversation and we hope we’ll reach agreement…’There hasn’t been a ton of movement.’ Bradbury maintains that Felton, the team’s starting point guard, wants to be in Charlotte for the long haul. Felton could sign a one-year, $5.5 million qualifying offer that would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer. But Bradbury said they wouldn’t consider doing that until long-term options are exhausted.”

Basketball and the Bobcats are at a stalemate.

He has been efficient. Plus its not like there is are that many more efficient than him. He wants to be in Charolotte which I must say should be good enough for them. How many players as good as Felton would want to play for the sub-par bobcats.

The Bobcats are smart in not commiting long term to Felton. Anything longer than 3 years is too long. While he may be worth more than the $5.5 mil qualifying offer, I can’t see him getting more than 3yrs/$18iml. The CBA is ending in 2 seasons and the new CBA will probably be a little more owner friendly (if they don’t end up in a lock out) so teams shouldn’t be commiting to anyone but franchise players for longer than 2 or 3 years.

  • tavoris

good point coast, but the Bobcats don’t have a franchise player. does that mean they don’t want to keep key pieces (which help lure franchise players)?

Good point tavoris, the Bobcats dont have any franchise player now that Adam Morrison is (asst. coaching??) the Lakers..

not that it matters much, but is Raymond Felton one of the most underrated players in the NBA?

  • knock

Bobcats have all the leverage. I mean, who are they bidding against?? Dj augustin is a better player than felton was, HIS ROOKIE YEAR.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

The Michael Crabtree of the NBA.

  • tavoris

Gerard, yes he is…he’s not really a pure PG, but he does play the position quite well.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

His stats are stronger than his game. DJ’s probably already the better player. To me, Felton has “super solid career backup” written all over him. Giving him long-term starter’s money (especially after drafting Augustin) would be foolish.

wow, lots of ‘opinions’ in here. You know what they say about a$$holes opinions? Everyone has to deal with them. But as soon as the Bobcats sign Iverson, i expect Felton to be traded to the Knicks for David Lee or something to that extent. If they dont sign Iverson, i expect Felton to be traded for a scorer. Either way i dont see Raymond comming back. DJ will be a better player, so i am not complaing a lot, but it will be sad to see Raymond go.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

ciolkstar, back-up? I think he could start for a lot of teams, but more in a Derek Fisher type of role, not like Steve Nash running everything. Like tavoris said: he might not be a true point guard, and I agree that they shouldn’t overpay him…. but he’s good enough to have a very nice career.

  • tavoris

DJ is the better shooter…however, the fact that he lost the position that was all but handed to him tells you who the better player is. True, Augustin will probably be a better player in a couple years (he reminds me a lot of Jameer Nelson-albeit smaller), but right now, he’s the backup.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

i agree with Tavoris. As i said DJ will be the better player. That does not mean he is right now. Felton is easily a top 15 point guard in the NBA, when DJ matures he will be a top 10. That is why Raymond needs to go, DJ needs to develop.

  • tavoris

BETCATS, why not keep felton until DJ is matured? if they let him go, then DJ not only won’t have anybody to learn the position from, but also won’t have any relief.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

because tavoris, we need a scoring guard. We can use Diaw in a point forward way (simular to Hedos’ role with Orlando last year) and let a big time scorer (ie Allen Iverson) share the playmaking duties with him. Felton just doesnt fit into the future of the team the way i see it. Its been that way since DJ was drafted. While if i were GM i would have never drafted DJ in the first place, what is done is done and in the end DJ might be the franchise player the Bobcats have been searching for ever since J-Rich left.

if the bobcats dont get anyone for this season, perhaps going after somebody like Rudy Gay next summer might be good?

  • http://www.digitalthread.com AlbertBarr

By the way BETCATS, the saying is “Opinions are like a$$holes…everyone’s got one.”

  • tavoris

BETCATS, I forget that the BETCats are your specialty…good points

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

see albertbarr, you just proved my point. A$$holes opinions are just things i have to deal with…its a play off a old favorite my friend. “Play wit it” -DP

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Knicks are NOT getting Raymond freaking Felton. No way.

  • engel

trade him to miami for q-rich and some sand

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

How could tavoris forget that? Like BETCATS is going to be the go to informative dude on the Kings or something. Teddy didn’t add in the “for David Lee,” part. Didn’t have to though I guess. Felton is not underrated, just under the radar.

  • UNCgrad

    Felton sux.

  • tavoris

Blinguo, didn’t you just post in another thread about trolling and flame-baiting?

  • http://slamonline.com Jhaney

Ray Felt is underrated and the Bobcats should pay him more than the mid lev e. He is one of the top players on the team. If not, Miami should be willing to sign him because they need a pg.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

I meant that in pure jest, plus that’s hardly harsh in my eyes. You’re being mighty sensitive there tavoris. I like reading your comments on AI and such, I wouldn’t give you trouble for posting opinions.
