Grizzlies Begin Defense of Iverson Signing

Despite all indications to the contrary, the brass in Memphis wants you to believe that this won’t be a total disaster: “Heisley called signing the 10-time All Star a no-brainer for a team that has struggled miserably at the box office and in the standings over the past three seasons. ‘People said if you’ve got a chance to get good players, would you? Well, we’ve got Zach Randolph and Allen Iverson,’ [team owner Michael Heisley] said. ‘I didn’t give up one rookie. My guys will play. But Allen is the perfect guy to help these young guys know what it means to win. He’s a fantastic player. He’s going to be a big addition. He’s going to help us be a team to be reckoned with. It’s going to bring real excitement to Memphis. I can’t think of one negative.”‘

“I can’t think of one negative.”
    Well, don’t be that sure…

  • neaorin

Allen will be a great mentor to those young guys during practice… oh wait.

  • carter

I cant think of one negative. I can think of at least 9!

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Thats because your thinking in dollars, Heisley, not wins. But I’m hoping that Ivey proves us all wrong.

  • Brian

This might be the only defense played by Memphis this year.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

    lol@Brian. That’s what I’ve been saying.

  • Wdavid

The funny about all of this uproar is, how much does this REALLY end up holding the Grizz back? They’re were a bad team last year, no matter how much the young guys develop this season they were still gonna be an under-.500 ballclub, and at least AI WILL generate a bit more in terms of ticket and jersey sales.

  • http://Fraggin'.com ChimmyChanga

How the mighty have fallen. The Grizzlies? That’s just sad…

  • 6marjons

they wanted to teach the young guys, the worst thing they could have possibly done is bring in two of the guys who are awful at being good examples
they’ll advance nowhere in two years and begin rebuilding again, gotta feel it for those memphis fans

  • Ken

    lol@ Brian. Nice one.

  • Clark

Well since the Griz obviously are looking for $$ at this point, I smell a reality tv show.

  • 6marjons

nba reported AI as saying ‘ This year is so personal for me’
You think that sounds like a guy who’s looking to build on the team concept? get real heisley

  • http://www.sonicbids.com/shaemorin doyouwantmore

    Vancouver Grizzlies rule.

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

If they get rid of zbo I can talk myself into this.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

Tell me why I have a feeling Rudy Gay is gonna leave as soon as he can? This franchise is just a cancer, sad to say. They haven’t been relevant since Hubie Brown coached.

  • tavoris

Klav, that’s was already a given before this signing, since he and Mayo don’t mesh well AT ALL. Gay has been campaigning for this signing all summer (as has Mayo), so I think that the excitement will keep both of them happy. If not, it’s only one season (in which the owners will be giddy from additional revenue).

  • a_whiteman

i give it about a month before half of their starting line up is complaining about touches

    LMA0 Bryan same

“People said if you’ve got a chance to get good players, would you? Well, we’ve got Zach Randolph and Allen Iverson,” Well, good players don’t always equal wins in some cases. We know that Allen Iverson and Zach Randolph are both black holes in the scoring sense. There is no way that their offseason moves will translate into any more than a 5-10 win improvement.

  • Mike Klander

Who here didn’t see this coming. I do think Memphis will surprise teams this year, but it will still do nothing for getting Iverson a ring, which I’m sure it’s what he wants at this stage in his career.

  • ThaRussian

Allen Iverson is the best thing that happened to the Grizzlies since Big Country Reeves!

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Over/Under on Mayo getting 10 less touches per game than last season?

  • Will

I have to admit that for the first time EVER, I am really actually curious to watch the Grizzlies this year. I really would love to see how Z-Bo and AI will “help” these young guys, especially seeing that Mayo already has that “sorry, I’m shooting” mentality and Rudy Gay likely should be a great second banana on a playoff team but will now never see the rock. A part of me hopes this is one of those “crazy enough it might just work” things, but i doubt that.

  • ktokyo

@doyouwantmore – Yes, viva Vancouver Grizzlies!!!

  • rav

this has car crash written all over it

  • TADOne

It has been proven time and time again that Americans will watch train-wreck tv.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I seem to be the only one who thinks this will work.. AI has been around long enough that I think he realizes its a TEAM game, and Z-BO (like AI in Philly) is used to having to take a lot of shots cuz there hasn’t been too many other options.. I think both now have more talent around them then they have on past teams.. (Not counting AI in Detroit because, well it was just a bad fit for him) I think and hope they make proper compromises for the good of the team.

  • rav

lol @TADOne, funny and yet true

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson

fun fact: Iverson already has his braids back.

  • Bart

Chris Wallace has a few Roo’s loose in the top paddock

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

Moose, iverson isn’t nearly the black hole people think he is, he has shown the ability to share the ball when he has capable teamates, see his year with webber and years with melo for proof. Zbo on the other hand would shoot if the game 9 on 1.

  • john

    fail :|

  • LeoneL

Yep, they’re trying teach the young guys. This year involves the don’ts, next season will be the dos.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Is Zac Randolph the first legitimate 20-10 BIG MAN that Allen Iverson has ever had????? Seriously. Chris Webber wasn’t kept long enough to make it work, No one COMMANDS the ball like Zac does down low – sure call it ‘hogging’ all haters out there, but he ‘rubs the lotion on as well as any elite PF in the league you could care to name. Seriously, this could really, really work. The rest of the Grizzlies are so young that they would seriously buy into the whole, “A.I. the floor leader” notion from the start. If they start to win some games early with a refreshed A.I. I GUARANTEE you’ll see ALOT of smiles around MEMPHIS this year – I’m officially jumping on board right now.
Anyone else that joins up AFTER the regular season starts are officially band-wagon jumping. Now is the time to join up.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    You start

    Marc Gasol
    Zac Randolph
    Rudy Gay
    OJ Mayo
    Allen Iverson

Hasheem Thabeet comes off the bench, along with Hamed Haddadi (self-proclaimed superstar) for the 2010 tall-towers royale`. When OJ rests or is running cool, AI moves to the 2 spot and Mike Conley takes the reigns as ERIC SNOW 2.0, with Darrell Arthur and DeMarre Carroll (4 r’s??) learning behind Gay and Marcus Williams (when this guy was a rookie, behind Kidd at NEWJERSEY he had a lot of upside and still developing even now) adds more depth at the PG/SG spots.
This team looks very very good. It has youth and height, a cagey/ALL-WORLD talent that is hell-bent on proving that he was gravely over-looked as a free agent this year. I can’t think of anyone else with such talent that was “pushed away” with so much disdain as a free agent????? This team just locked in a playoff birth.

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero dma

Zach Randolph and down low are 4 words that get thrown around recklessly. ZBo has no idea what posting up means. He USED to get a lot of garbage buckets. But he, along with ‘Sheed, fell in love with jumpers.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

I am holding out hope, but I’m not nearly as optimistic as you.
A big part of whether this works out or not, comes down to whether ZBo can work in the post. I haven’t seen it recently.
It’s not about getting on wagons for me. I just really hope this works out for Ivy but I’m extremely doubtful.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    Oh, that was @Dacre

  • http://www.melvinblog.com Melvin

They will now be often referenced as the ‘shitty memphis grizzlies’ squad..

  • http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Video-Guy-Dupuy-s-ridiculous-new-dunk;_ylt=ArUf78nf1e6m.CYLHndihuG8vLYF?urn=nba,187926 Dacre

    yeah i got it…

  • http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Video-Guy-Dupuy-s-ridiculous-new-dunk;_ylt=ArUf78nf1e6m.CYLHndihuG8vLYF?urn=nba,187926 Dacre

But surely Zbo could buy into that? He’s another guy that has a woeful reputation; he’s gotten heaps of flack regarding shot selection, ‘softie label’ and a dude that just seems to float along, but how is anyone getting 20 and 10 averages just by ‘hanging around’?? The real knock against this team is an unproven coach, but if he gets something solid in play and the players buy into it: It will work.

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

I miss when the Grizzlies were contenders.

  • vaLTmac51

    A Grizzlies cover is coming.

  • http://kingslayer.wordpress.com The Kingslayer

There is waaay too much under estimating going on here. The irony is like I said A.I. never made a team worse. Take a look at the stats. Every team he was on improved, along with his stats. Detroit was already on a decline and everyone knows it. Curry was disfunctional having no clear strategy or plan for his team. You did see Lebron sweep them minus A.I. on the court right? I have tivo and some youtube links if you don’t believe…

With all the hate, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see something positive come out of this deal. We know haters will spew excuses through out the season trying to diminish any good. I won’t make any, because looking at the Griz record the past couple of years anything better is an improvement. I see A.I. going just that…An improvement…

  • RedGold&Green

    The Answer!

  • Bart

@Dacre, they might make the playoffs if Zbo wakes up and discovers he is NOT a 3 point shooter. I repeat NOT a 3 point shooter. Dude is a fat mess and a moron so glad he’s gone from the Clippers

just the reiterate Zach Randolph…………..NOT a 3 point shooter

  • Christian

definitely agree with The Kingslayer, Curry wasn’t much of a coach at all in Detroit. All this underestimating is coming from one season that was a trainwreck for all players involved, there definitely wasn’t much positivity in the team towards the end of the season, we need flip!

  • Kas

are OJ, Gay, Randolph and Iverson going to play on the same team? it will never work

  • Captain Jean Luc-Picard

This may be the last hurrah for AI. McCants too.

  • BallerUnknown

A.I. will most likely try his hardest this year (95% chance), because he wants to keep playing, but people realize he is more trouble than what he is worth. PLaying for the Grizzlies though, he is hoping to prove everyone wrong and my guess get on a higher ranking team.

  • Charles Kirk

I hope and pray to God that this whole experiment works. Because, as a Memphian and Grizzlies fan I’ve never been this excited for the Grizzlies EVER!!!! But, I’m just as skeptical about it as well. I hope that it works so that Iverson can prove alot of people wrong.

  • Al

I think both now have more talent around them then they have on past teams.. (Not counting AI in Detroit because, well it was just a bad fit for him)
You think there wasn’t any talent in Denver and Denver traded him because he was just a great fit for them?

  • rikson

I really hope AI will be given the green light just that he realises he isnt the offensive force he was… After that: The sky is the limit!
