Iverson, Grizzlies Closing in on Deal

by Marcel Mutoni

Allen Iverson has made it clear that he wants to play for the Memphis Grizzlies. According to The Answer, he can make them a better team, and if everything goes well, he’ll have the opportunity to prove just that (and skeptics wrong.)

It’s been confirmed that Iverson and Grizzlies team owner Michael Heisley are meeting in Atlanta today, and if both sides like what they’re hearing, A.I. could join his fourth NBA team very soon.

From ESPN:

[Michael] Heisley confirmed that the meeting will take place Monday in Atlanta, where Iverson has been working out in preparation for next season. Yet Heisley cautioned that an agreement in principle with Iverson has not yet been reached, saying: “[The meeting] does not mean it’s a done deal. He wants to meet and have some questions answered and we want to meet.”

Memphis is believed to be the only team actively pursuing the four-time scoring champion and has established its willingness to sign Iverson to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million.

Iverson would be a draw at the ticket counter for the Grizz, and regardless of the multitude of potential problems the signing could cause, management is obviously convinced that he’s worth the risk.

It’s worth noting that A.I. has yet to give a clear answer as to whether or not he’d accept a backup role (in Memphis or anywhere else.)

In a dark room somewhere, OJ Mayo is nervously pondering what all of this means.

Wait, why haven’t the Grizzlies figured out that Allen Iverson is exactly what they DON’T need?

    Goodbye Allen.

AI on hte Grizz – thats a sad day for bballers around the world! The best example that talent isnt everything….

this must be the only place in the basketball world where the fact that N-O-B-O-D-Y really wants to sign a top-100 all-time guy (this ranking according to the NBA sponsors, not one GM has such an opinion as it has been repeatedly mentioned. Of course who are they to ask, they know nothing about playstation…) that is healthy and just 33 years old doesn’t ring nobody’s bell in relation to the player’s actual worth…..at the same time, this is why love it!!!! (Hello Eboy,Allenp,Teddy,Tadone, nbk etc)

i mean, even Bill Walton without a single leg functioning properly had half the league asking for his services at the same age(and older)….of course Bill was an actual bball player so i am to blame for comparing apples with oranges….

  • mike

the simple fact is that michael heisley does not care about putting together a winning basketball team – he sees the name allen iverson as a money maker, that’s all that matters

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

@ SOFOKLIS: It doesn’t come as a surprise to us because Iverson has proven that if he goes to a team and the team wants to win a championship, or even improve, it just doesn’t happen. Look at the history. Great player, can’t win with a team. So nobody wants to take the risk that goes along with signing the dude who needs the ball to be successful. Remember, OJ Mayo and Rudy Gay also need the ball to be successful and this move wouldn’t be smart. Teams have stars. If they bring in Iverson, who is just an above average scorer right now, then they’d have to treat him like a star in order to milk it for all it’s worth, and with that they would sacrifice wins. Yes, he’s one of the best all-time. But right now it isn’t a good move for anyone.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

“a crowd pleaser…” in other words they simply needed a clown….according to Heisley,a cartoon must be the perfect fit. Seems reasonable to me.

  • Judy

Memphis, consider yourselves lucky if you get him.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

And SOFOKLIS my above comment was at your first one. So, it’s all about selling tickets in Memphis. That sucks. Smart at the same time, though. I try not to think too hard about the money stuff…

@Mooose….: put him on a team full of defensive specialists, a team that is going to play for him to score and nothing more, and i bet he can still get you over 25 points easily. You think it is that difficult for him to shoot his usual 40% if he is given 25 tries…? His skill has NOT diminished that much, it is just that even the dumbest GM in the league figured out that you cannot win games this way. Helloooo!!!!

  • GOAT

Close your eyes and think back to AI dominating the league on his Finals run in the red, black and silver, just after the dawn of Y2K. Breaking ankles, getting to the line at will, leading the league in steals, and earning the league’s MVP award. His style of play just doesn’t work anymore against the speed and raw strength of the youth in the NBA today. HOWEVER, if he were to swallow his pride and travel over to Europe, I’m sure he could make the same amount of cash (if not more), be loved by the fans again and most importantly regain his dominant form (by abusing lesser talented players).

It would be sad to see him ushered out of the league after all he’s done. But this fiasco that’s going on right now, signing with the hapless Grizzlies (not to mention halting the growth of OJ and Rudy) is just plain wrong.

I don’t think you can compare Walton with Iverson. They bring completely different things to the court. And saying Iverson is not an actual bball player is ridiculous. Iverson is most effective when he is on the court, and you could say that Walton was most effective with the Celtics in the locker room and the bench. But both roles are just as important. It’s been 15 since people have been watching Iverson, what do people expect from a 5’11″ shooting guard?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

I think GM’s have been very delusional about Iverson but he maybe able to make a lot of GM’s regret their decison, AI should explore his game in the first month of the season and if he cant average 27 and 6 then just average 20 and 10 which team would’nt want that in next years free agency? But this may end up being a big disaster. Should have gone to the Bobcats. Oh and Im preety sure AI will outplay Mike Conley for the starting spot in training camp.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

@Pardeep…..: “AI should explore his game in the first month of the season and if he cant average 27 and 6 then just average 20 and 10 which team would’nt want that in next years free agency?” this was a true gem(no wonder you are one of my favorites) !!! I mean, not even the shoe-seller’s agent wouldn’t have said something like this… A.I. needs a brain transplant in order to manage 10 assists for a year, just check out the guys that have averaged 10 assists in a year at the last 30 years: you see him having any basketball similarities with them..??

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I think Memphis will be alright, AI isnt the ball hog he used to be. I think they should give most of the shots to Gay, let Mayo come along slowly, make Z-bo earn his with put backs, and give AI the ball at the end of games..

  • jose

Just tell AI That points are listed as assists and vice versa.then he’ll be awesome….i have this feeling that were gonna be proved wrong by AI just because of all of this thats gone on wit him. idk y,just a feeling

  • http://ubc.ca tealish

I don’t think SOFOKLIS likes Allen Iverson.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

@SOFOKLIS: Well he avearged 8 assists and 30 points when he put his mind to averaging 8 assits and 30 points in 2005 so im preety sure he can avearge 20 and 10. He avearges 27 ppg and 6 apg for his how hard is it to get 7 less points each night and 4 more assits? Steve Nash avearged 10 assits and he controls the game by dominating the ball like Iverson sometimes does except Iverson scores when he dominates the ball.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

he is moving from one bad situation to another if he does this. OJ Mayo, Rudy Gay, and Zach Randolph will take a combine total of 1000000000000000 this year, leaving none for anyone else on the team including Iverson. Come to Charlotte PLEASE!

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

They have too many ball hogging 20 point scorers in rudy gay, zach randolph, and oj mayo.

  • http://slamonline.com B-Moore

    Sad, sad, sad, sad day.

Here lies the career of Allen Iverson.
    Rest in Peace.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Pardeep: Actually, according to Basketball Reference (awesome site, by the way), Iverson averaged 30 points and 10 assists one year in a first round playoff series.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Meaning, you’re right. If Iverson wanted to average 10 assists per game, he probably could.

    __
I expect a 5’11 shooting guard to be very dominant in practice and push every other player that goes up against him, yet be humble and understand that young guys are coming through bigger, stronger and just as quick and it’s his time to be a teacher and mentor, so that when he’s sitting and they are playing they are doing the things HE expects to see them do.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

@Dacre: Why do you have to make it like Iverson is so slow that he can’t even drop 20 a night, guys that drop 20 a night are guys who play like 38 mins a game and I think Iverson in the right situation can average 25 easily, Iverson probably will be a teacher and mentor and accept coming off the bench when hes 37 or 38 looking to win a ring. Now is not the time though. Watch Kobe at 34 you won’t see him take a back seat to anybody because if your as great as guys like Iverson and Lebron and Kobe you never want to take a back seat because theres always that mindset of yeah I have done it for so long my way why change?

^ This European guy would quintuple post Brett Favre is the best Free Agent ever, retirement/comeback on a Michael Jordan level. He’ll get the message 5 years later that Brett Favre is a half a shoulder left player, 1 concussion away and Iverson didn’t “ruin the game” or “the league (and its image).” News seems to travel slow to get there.
    -
Rubio, the biggest Euro in years, bigger “cartoon” before 20 yrs old than any NBA player their entire careers, including Oliver Miller/Spreewell/Kwame/etc. Bigger “shame” to their leagues than Darko or Nikoloz Tskitishvili.

Baron piece, chucker or not, at least he knows the meaning of clutch in the playoffs, unlike a sharpshooting Peja Stojakavic having a playoff curse on a T-Mac level. Hedo’s nice but was clutch one year and now will tail off from here on out, probably still won’t make All Star. Best chance this upcoming year, except shooting well for Toronto won’t make you stand out on that team.

@tavoris…:it’s much more funny that there are still loads of people who think the shoe-seller was-(or is) a relevant basketball player. Once again: IVERSON is one of the worst players in the history of the game. If factor the publicity and the praise he got, he is definitely the worst of all-time by a wide margin.

  • rikson

Well if LOADS of people think AI is not relevant anymore, maybe – just maybe – there is some truth to it, hmm…

Plus: He is about to get signed by the grizzlies – hello?

I echo rickson in saying he’s about to get signed by THE FREAKING GRIZZLIES…I think that says a little something about someone with all of the career accomplishments that AI has…In other news, the NBA just announced that they are going to allow the Memphis Grizzles to play 41 of thier 82 games with two basketballs…prepare to watch your hero fade into mediocrity AI fanboys…

However, there are people who actually think it sucks for you all to kick a man when he’s down. Have any of you considered that NBA players are basketball junkies (and probably read this site just like us)? If you were out of a job and consistently heard how you suck at the job you had, how would you feel? Decorum goes a long way in getting your criticisms heard and received.

But AI fanboys are easily the most irrational and agitatible fans in the league. I also find it hilarious how seiously people take SLAMonline message board postings. • http://kingslayer.wordpress.com The Kingslayer

The thing is when you look at Allen’s overall stats they are comparable to other guards, and even better. The problem I think comes down to winning. You look at the fact that he was on a 76ers team that he did make better. Look at the years he was there, and the years prior to his arrival.

You take a look at the fact that Carmelo has always had a good Denver team. In fact better than what Lebron inherited going to Cleveland. Why were they not able to get out of the playoffs? The irony in that is last summer George Karl said finally he would make a commitment to defense. That is the first in his career. Many forget his Seattle team that lost to the Bulls, and they had a better team overall on paper. Minus MJ. Point is A.I. Didn’t go to any team, and make them worse. He made them better.

Now it’s time for Allen to go to a team that has the right chemistry for him. I’m not sure if that team is the Gizzles, but if the team is committed to winning, and Allen has learned that he has to speak up. He has to be a general, and not just a talented player. Then he will make this team that much better. This is time to lead. No longer just doing his “job”, or being whatever the hell player people think he should be. You don’t owe anyone shit Allen. Go lead. History has tons of examples of leaders coming with different view points. Except what they all have in common is the ability to inspire those around them. It’s time for you to inspire those who will go to war with you. All the haters can choke, and die on their spittle…Go win Allen

Iverson could NEVER create. Just find the open man. You need to legit be able to create for players to average ten assists.

  • Omar Groves

In 2008 This “barely above average” scorer, as referred to by some “below average” bball fans, u know the type who only follow headlines & trends & adopt views of sport writers other than forming their own in is “Old Age” Manage to Drop 51 on Kobe & the Lakers. and closed out his Last Denver season with 26.5 ppg, 7.1 Apg and His best EVER fg% at 45.5%… In detroit The “below Average Scorer” decided of his own free will to sacrifiece his scoring to win a ring Takin only 15 shots per game he Avergae 17.5 & Almost Led Detroit in scoring as well as assist. Now due to a “Below average Coach” a depressed hamilton, unmotivated Sheed, and other factors detroit tanked & yall follow the media & Blame him…..How BrAINLESS are yall, I C people hating him for no reason, repeating & recycling word for word, articles written by OLD sportscasters who themselves are too lazy to write for themselves. Only in America….I applaud the grizzlies for recognizing that despite all the Hate this dude still can play. He simply fell into oblivion by maturing in DENVEr he was well behaved & well loved…Never Missed Practice…Had his Best ever career numbers…But with no matching scandals the Media Ignored him & Yall Forgot about him. Denver lost to the Lakers Again this year. and only reached the conf Finals. because they ranked more than #8 this year. Allen got them to 50 wins with Less help than Chauncey who Got them to 54 wins. Unlike Allen Chauncey Had the Help of a Healthy Nene, The Bird Man, and Dantay Jones. a Defensive Stopper capable of going Bowen & tripping ppl…See playoffs when Kobe trip & fell, cuz “I’m a clutz” his own words lol. C’mon folks Wake up Use that Thing called a brain & form your own views. Refuse to be programmed

When is the last time you saw him on an NBA advertisement? The real reason behind all of the negative things we here and the reason most people hate(wayno)is usually because he had cornrows, dresses hip-hop, stays true to his culture and revolutionized the game in a way some folks never liked.

And repeat to trail off stretching the page, and 15 periods and exclamation points. If anyone is a kid and needs schooling, its he who has no name, lack of understanding English, and spams Iverson and Marbury articles, making himself a cartoon more than he can bash the players. But we all know what he’s going to do. Easy enough to ignore him.

Don’t say you guys play or coach, it won’t matter to !!!!!! —– …… dude, like he calls EBOY a kid who has never played ball when everyone knows EBOY has played and coached or still does.

@Omar….:you say “I applaud the grizzlies for recognizing that despite all the Hate this dude still can play.” Memphis owner Michael Heisley says: ”Obviously I think he’d be a crowd pleaser in Memphis.”

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Everything has to be a European player with you.
If that’s the guy I remember, he is the overseas Shaq, nicknamed “Baby Shaq”. So again Shaq precedes other heavy big men.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

Shaq ain’t that heavy (not even close) that’s all. Of course he used to be a way better player.

You guys can argue all you want, but calling a guy, who went to the finals once (!) – in maybe the weakest eastern conference of all time – one of the best players to ever play this game is just ridiculous and tells me more about your bb knowledge than about AI! Sh!t, ive heard terms like most talented player and the toughest player ever in the L…. thats a joke!
Despite all your love, lets be true for once -> Iverson was/is and will be a streetballer… nuff said!

Jukai said: “Iverson could NEVER create. Just find the open man. You need to legit be able to create for players to average ten assists. ” My little friends it is as simple as this. You don’t need to be an NBA GM or coach to figure out.
@Wayno&tavoris&Blinguo…: pardeep said:”AI should explore his game in the first month of the season and if he cant average 27 and 6 then just average 20 and 10″ many times you wonder how somebody can figure out through a forum if somebody else has ever touched a basketball in his life…it is much more simple than you think, i don’t need to be a genious, if i ever played some ball i know that if i am a scoring guy (Rashard Lewis style) and they put on me a great diffender (Scottie Pippen) I CANNOT just say, ‘you know what, i am going for 12 assists today’ …you don’t turn a switch on real bball and become a playmaker,BUT you can juggle with numbers at videogames (i substitute 27 and 7 with 20 and 10)…same thing happened some months ago when Eboy made some comments on a failed dunk attempt on the video section, you could easily understand that he has never touched a bball or come nowhere near rim level in his life….(except the fact that he ain’t the second coming of Nicola Tesla)…

Antonis, i am a fan. U know that, but pull back a little with antagonizing the regulars here and making Euro vs. US player comments everytime. Please? Every commenter here has people he likes reading or quasi despises, we all know yours. No need to keep mentioning it, right? You’ve even gotten into Bling’s head (and he’s usually quite the mellow fella). Whaddya say, you and i boycott any Iverson to A,B,C posts (i am so bored by em), and enjoy the great Eurobasket tournament going on? How about Poland, eh? Polish Hammer & Lampe are doing damage down there.

i had NEVER thought about making Euro vs US player comments(although there are differences between them) cause i think it is a stupid discrimination…i MADE those kinds of comments ONLY AFTER some kids (Eboy,Allenp, etc) started derogatory comments towards Euros(sorry for not being Jesus Christ and turn the other cheek,i’ve never claimed being a saint). At the same time i have said again&again that this blidness that some kids have towards both cartoons is to me (honestly) really funny and entartaining. Trying to convince somebody that A.I. ain’t really a bball player (acording the basic principles of the game-”TEAM”) is (at least to me)like trying convincing somebody that Jordan is the greatest of all time: you cannot be a real bball fun and not be able to understand that M.J is the best. To me is hilarious plain and simple. To sum it up, this is a joy that i will not give up and at the same time i feel that it is my ‘duty’ to help people that love the game(at least if the spent so much time being around here…) get a better understanding of the basics…About Poland now, i will wait to see them against a really good team (Slovenia,Spain,Serbia,Greece, even France) and then make my opinion. I saw Lithouania live this summer and i thought that i could find a place at their guard rotation, they have a great front line but their guards are nonexistent…did you see Greece against Croatia? Our first half was a bball seminar.

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    Yep, Greece murdered Croatia.

Shaq is decided that he’s going to try for 20 pts and 10 rebs early this season, but if he can’t he’ll shoot for 15 pts, 8 rebs, 19 asts…he is getting older, so why not just get assists instead? Also, Jason Kid is just gonna score 30 ppg and only get 6 ast instead of getting 9sh asts… he’s gonna cut back on the rebounding and defense a little too…

  • tavoris

SOFOKLIS…does your explanation of a “real ball player” mean that Kobe just became one two seasons ago? Cuz he sure as hell hadn’t played team ball before then….smh
