Jordan Farmar: Gunning for Derek Fisher’s Job

Farmar has made it clear that he wants to be the starting point guard, in L.A. or elsewhere: “I want to run a team and be the lead guard,’ Farmar said Tuesday on the sidelines of a basketball clinic in Singapore. ‘Hopefully, it can be here (with the Lakers). There’s a lot of jobs out there. I feel I have a lot to offer.”‘

Probably still only on the team so Kobe(& fans) can tell people he’s better than Jordan (Wilt, Big-O, et al don’t exist). You’ll know where you rank in Phil Jax’s depth chart by the book you get compared to Shannon Brown’s, Farmar. Hope its better than Luke’s book.

And he should be. If at this point in his career (he’s not a rook anymore), he accepts backing up a guy that’s basically a cone on defense… then he’s just not a starter in this league. Winning is fun, contributing a lot to the wins is even more fun.

Hey all, just thought I would let you all know about a player sighting.I was in Puerto Rico for the last 9 days and I didn’t know til Sunday that the FIBA Championship of the Americas was going on.While I was at Plaza Las Americas(A large mall)sitting on a bench with my girlfriend,I looked up to see a crowd of guys walking my way. They all were above average height but I didn’t make much of it since I’m pretty tall myself but as they got closer I started looking at their faces and realized it was the Brazil men’s basketball team. The only one I recognized right off was Anderson Varejao and he was the only one interested in stopping to talk so after the shock wore off,I grabbed my best friend from LIDS and caught up to Varejao to talk for a quick minute and get his signature. He was genuinely one of the nicest guys I’ve met, athlete or otherwise. He even told us where he was staying and said to drop by but we didn’t get a chance to because we left PR the next morning.Anyways,it was definitely one of the coolest things I’ve had happen to me in a long time so I thought I would share.Sorry for such a long post!

good luck mr. Farmar. Shannon Brown was backing up Fisher at some point, so not sure if it will ever happen for Jordan Farmar in L.A.

Jake, cool story by the way. But while he gave you his autograph, did he flop afterwards? “To Jake, from Anderson Varejao…. FOUL!”

  • http://twitter.com/NotebookNick thesubwayconnection

That’s dope, Jake. And yeah, I don’t see it happening for Farmar in LA. At least not with the Lakers.

  • Jake

Haha,no flop. That would have been amazing. For a few minutes I forgot how much I yell at the tv because of that man.

I like farmar … but Brown is WAY more athletic, passes better, shoots better, has a faster learning curve, explosive, okay on defense, and is dieing to play any minute and doesn’t get scared of the big moments. Sh1t, alot of people would be happy with brown running some point on they’re team!!! Very impressed with that kid.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

james, actually no. they tried to make him play the point in chi, cle and cha / not a fan of farmar nor brown but farmar has WAY MORE ball skills than brown. phil jax realized midway thru the playoffs that shannon couldn’t play the point at all and was making him play off the ball. Brown should be Kob’s backup for 8-10 mins a game. that’s it. he’s got heart, hops and an adequate spot up j.

  • Jacqueline Mitchell

Good luck Jordan. I don’t think Derek’s ready to give up his spot yet.

Z, I think brown is ready to learn whatever he has to. Farmar, was looking good, but he hasn’t been the same since the unjury!!

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

i like Farmar as point, but he’s too damn small and can’t defend the bigger pg’s. i still think chris brown has a better chance of landing the starting spot just because he matches up better on defense, plus LA doesn’t need a true point. Brown also looks good at backing up Kobe like Z said, but the really the true liabilities are Vujacic and Walton. LA needs to package Vujacic, Farmar, and Walton for a SG and a SF.

  • Krishan

Klav if Chris Brown gets to be LA’s point guard, Bynum NEVER touches the ball.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

Krishan its not like Bynum needs the ball anyway, too many offensive weapons. P-Jax even said he just needs him to be a defensive presence. Bynums b!tching about playing time and shots is only because he wants the ball more. look at LAs offense, how many guys on any given night can get 20 if they demand it? 4 starters and one guy on the bench mob can go off for 20 any given night. with that much of a high powered offense, why does it matter who gets what shots on any given night? the only person guaranteed the freedom to score like that is Mamba, other than that everybody has to get in line. not like LA needs a true point with the triangle anyway.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Klav is right about LA not needing a true point. Casual Laker fans won’t remember this but last season before Jordan got hurt he was playing great and looked like he would be ready to take over the reigns sooner rather than later. Then after the injury he never seemed to get his confidence back and was routinely chastised by Phil for making bad decisions while Shannon Brown played very similar to a young D-Fish with more explosiveness. When health Jordan is a better pure point, but Shannon has all the tools and the confidence to fit perfectly into the triangle offense. I’m excited to see how both of them play early in the year.

Brad…a DFish that can throw it down on the Birdman? LOL ILL!!!!

  • underdog

    Wa-a-a-y to go.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I thought the key difference between Brown and Farmar was the Brown’s confidence did not fade when he screwed up, or when the pressure was highest. That’s my biggest problem with Farmar. He’s kind of mentally fragile.

Jordan you are quite the comedian….

  • http://shoenut.blogspot.com ShoeNut

Just keep playing hard. Your time will come.

  • bulldog

Sorry, Jordan- You are a valued and respected team member, but seriously you need to stop talking and starting looking, listening (no ear jokes please) and learning from the NBA World Champions that are your esteemed teamates. Your time will come- just be patient. You want more rings? Zip up the pie-hole.

  • J-Ro

What if they try to use both Farmar and Brown the Same way that HOuston does it with Brooks and Lowry. Whenever the opposing team puts in a bigger PG, u put in Brown for Defensive Purposes. And Just Let Farmar Worry about Offense and the smaller pg’s.

  • Mr.stoney

Is this really news? I mean dosent every backup in sports want to be the starter?

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

If he’s looking for money, get him out of LA cause true LA fans are only true to the organization and team. Ariza was one of my favorite Lakers, as soon as he pulled that BS about wanting money and dipped, i lost all my respect for him. bring on Ron Ron. if Farmar is looking to be the starter he best believe he is gonna compete with Chris Brown. and Allen was right, he also needs to retain his confidence if he wants to start.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Derek fisher should have lost the starting job AT LEAST 2 years ago. Please don’t bring up the 3 in the Finals over Jameer either. If Shannon Brown and Farmar were playing those minutes that three wouldn’t have been necessary.

  • Josh D

Why did he say here if he’s in Singapore?

  • luv2ball

Derek Fisher is such a class act and a professional that I bet he will voluntarily give up his spot for Farmar. The lakers need Farmar because he is the only one on the roster capable of staying in front of a quick point guard. Well I guess Ron -Ron could guard a point guard for a little while. The Lakers don’t need a true point guard because they run the triangle. D-Fish is the first small guard to start for Phil since BJ/John Paxson. Phil just hates small point guards.

  • 6marjons

not gonna happen on the lakers,
Z i agree with you though on contributing a lot to the wins, this he doesn’t do atm it’ll make him happier if he’s on the court for longer, but dfish is a proven vet who can still hit some decent threes, any recent ones come to mind?

  • UnRel

forget starting… work on your health.. fish will always be a starter.. but as the season grinds on.. farmar will get the bulk of the minutes..

remember.. the first 3 rings at staples.. the PFs were horace grant and ac green.. but horry came off the bench and played the bulk of the minutes..

farmar.. get healthy.. get stronger.. get quicker.. come off the bench and playing starters’ minutes

  • UnRel

    …and PLAY starters’ minutes..

  • badnewsb8ller

shannon brown does not have a better jumper than farmar!!

  • skywalker

i love how the lakers biggest problem is having 2 much talent! i love all 3 of those point guards…i don’t think farmar deserves to start yet, but it is cool that hes the only jewish dude that can dunk

Why did he say here if he’s in Singapore?
Notice how after the word here, there are brackets? and therein, the phrase ‘with the lakers’? this denotes context. I would ruin you on a basketball court.

  • http://- Marcel

He’s changed his jersey # from 5 to 1. So he’s really aiming to be #1. (no articles about the # switch, saw it on the lakers.com roster and also at Espn’s Lakers roster).
