J.R. Rider Attempting a Comeback

Put simply, this would be amazing: “One of the baddest of bad boys in recent NBA history – former Timberwolf J.R. Rider – is negotiating a return to professional basketball in the United States at age 38 … Rider’s agent, Joe Lee, said this morning that Rider hasn’t played organized ball since a 10-game pit stop with the Denver Nuggets in 2001-02. Still, he’s ‘been working out hard’ and playing pickup ball with local college guys in suburban Phoenix, where Rider now makes his home, Lee said. The New Jersey Nets are considering inviting Rider to preseason camp, Lee said, even though that team said it doesn’t see Rider competing for a roster spot. And what about the Timberwolves? ‘He’d go in a heartbeat,’ Lee said. ‘He’s humbled now … he’s matured.”‘

He matured about 10 yrs. too late. Best of luck though, J.R.

  • apeman

Please let Memphis sign him… ZBo, Iverson and JR Rider all on one team… I don’t know if they would win even one game… but they’d surely be entertaining

  • ENDS

Come Back Penny. At Least one more Hot colorway for the AP2′s

  • Hussman25

Too little too late… It’s time to turn the page JR. Next…

  • Randy Brown

Seconded on signing for Memphis. The Grizzlies are already a reality show waiting to happen, that would put them over the top

  • Airswade

    This is a joke, right?

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Don’t people start thinking about leaving the league at 38?

  • JoeMaMa

    Thirding on the Memphis signing.
And to save myself a post, fourthing.

Sad. The interview with him and John Thompson 3 or 4 yrs ago was his best chance to get back in. We’ll always have the Bayside Funk memories JR!

  • CSP8

Its the Eastbay Funk!!!!! and i just wanna see a 38 year-old attempt it. That’ll be enough for me.

  • The D Train

I love me some JR! If anyone is familiar with one of his most famous quotes about Portland and something about “50 miles from here they’re still…” well let’s just say that was classic considering I lived 50 miles from Portland, and sadly, didn’t think ol’ crazy JR was that far off. I also thoroughly enjoyed the getting caught smoking weed out of a pop can. Straight priceless for a millionaire who, I’m guessing, wasn’t a part-time smoker. As much as I love Roy and the new Blazers, I can’t say for comedic value I don’t miss ‘Sheed, JR, Damon, Z-Bo, Miles, and The Nanny Stopper. Opening up the sports section of the Oregonian every day was like potentially opening up a funny-ass christmas present. ***sighs wistfully***

Wow…J.R. on the Grizzlies…they’ve already built the goofiest team in NBA history……between A.I., O.J., and Z-BO they need three basketballs…Rudy doesn’t get one…sorry Rudy…I mean, that team is going to have no chemistry at all, it’s going to be every man for himself…they might as well sign J.R., to complete the craziness.

YES…please come back J.R. Rider…you have my support!

  • Yesse

I hope J.R. can really still do something.I hope he can come to the Nba and be down to earth.Just leave a good memory instead of a bad one.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

HAHAHAHAHAH……Aww man. Leave the soda cans at home J.R.

  • UnRel

can’t believe he has a ring..

  • http://www.sonicbids.com/shaemorin doyouwantmore

SLAM didn’t include all the info. (I guess it makes for a better story if you leave some stuff out, SLAM?) He’s not attempting a comeback into the NBA. He’s attempting to join a ‘professional’ team, but nowhere near the NBA’s level. Anyway, it’s great to hear J.R has finally turned nineteen years old in his mind.

  • franko

nice dunk…and a “no look” half court 3! thats all

  • Strotter

he is the epitome of “what if..”. What if JR, What if?

  • Big D

Bring them all back, Twolves. The oldies with “tons of twolves conflict”:

    PG Starbury
    SG JR Rider
    SF Latrell Sprewell
    PF Tom Gugliotta
    C Joe Smith

I was a huge JR fan, at one point he was my favorite (along with GP) in the league. I still get goosebumps when I see the “eastbayfunkdunk” replayed. But at 38 years old? I say quit living in the past buddy. Hope he has kept himself in great shape and proves us all wrong.

  • Josh D

He’s matured, at 38 years old?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    I can’t believe he’s only 38…I thought he was like 55 by now…lol

  • http://shoenut.blogspot.com ShoeNut

    Good Luck JR.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

No freaking way. He used to be one of my favorite players. But he’s got about as good a chance getting into the league as Master P did back in the day.

  • Ryan.T.

He used to be one of my favorite players when he was young & selfish… I don’t know about a comeback @ 38 yrs old though.. His athletic ability is what set him apart from others. JR was the first guy I seen go between the legs & dunk

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

first off JR Rider plays in my mens league and averages 15.5points 8 rebounds and 4 assists in 33.8 minutes a night. this is a mens league people how can he play in the NBA, if he can successfully there are about 4 players in the league that should be in the NBA atleast on a bench…..which isn’t the case

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

but he is shooting 45% from the college 3 lol which i guess means he has improved his jumpshot a little bit

  • vic21

we will see this again in 2015 when Steve Francis attempts a comeback. I’m sure he’ll mature when he’s 38 too.

  • Mathieu Vervynckt

just when you thought things couldn’t get more absurd…

  • Surreal

If he’s in shape he should come back and join the dunk contest as well. Maybe he can score an upset against Lebron. LOL!

  • mattyp32

    what apeman said..

  • http://slamonline.com acethat 56

I have a bunch of j.r. Basketball cards…didn’t he. Play for the lakers..at one point

  • skippy boing

reckon he could still thru the legs dunk at 38?

  • reall

I wanna see penny come back

  • http://www.nextgg.com DMC14

    YES, awesome, Good Luck J.R.!!!

Can he still dunk through the legs, if he cant he shouldn’t be aloud back.

Penny only just quit a couple of years ago?

    i got JR rookie cards.

  • http://WWW.Facebook.com Watari Atari

    He and penny should comeback!

  • Shem

I hope hes been practicing those no look halfcourt 3′s, it would definetly make the WNBA top 10 plays

  • franko

I wanna see “The 90s Kniks” come back…Oakley, mason, ewing, smith, starks…

  • chintao

    Come on, Knic…. Oh yeah. I forgot. D’Antoni doesn’t like real ni@@as.

  • German Reignman

How about getting him and Harold Miner on a team together ? They would definitely form a superb “all smiles and dunks team” … please, somebosdy make it happen … add Gerald Green and Dee Brown and Shawn Kemp and you have a full cast of players that were jinxed by the Slam Dunk Competition
