KJ: Sac-town Could Lose the Kings

by Marcel Mutoni

Kevin Johnson, who, somewhat amazingly is the mayor of Sacramento, is using whatever political clout he may have to affect NBA-related matters.

Johnson, often seen sitting courtside alongside the Kings’ owners, says that if Sac-town doesn’t get a shiny new gym (and soon), the Kings may not be long for Sacramento.

The Bee reports:

After learning that Arco Arena is considered unsuitable to host a major college basketball tournament, Mayor Kevin Johnson said Tuesday that Sacramento could lose the Kings if efforts for a new arena aren’t stepped up.

“If we don’t have a clear path to an arena in the not too distant future, then we as Sacramentans need to know that (the Kings) very well may look elsewhere,” Johnson said.

Johnson can huff and puff all he wants, but the reality is this: the economy being what it is, there’s no financing available to start construction on a new facility. The NBA wants something built at Cal Expo, but with no cash, those plans have stagnated (along with other potential sites within the city.)

The Kings are stuck with Arco Arena for now, but no one can quite say for how much longer.

Sacramento fans retaliated with, “give us the modern day version of White Chocolate and CWebb or we won’t buy any tickets.”

a crappy team asking the cash-strapped locals for a new arena. this is new and interesting!

Last in attendance in 08-09? Yup…Arco might collapse with those HUGE crowds filing in every night. Good call KJ.

i hate to chime in but lets look at reality…no one has coin..maloofs have coin and unless lord stern ok’s vegas..where would the kings go..they were in kc at one point..that didnt work..why would it now! as much as sacto should get a new arena closer to the city or silicon valley i guess we shall see. you got a lot of teams in the red and last time i checked..stern said he did not want small market teams becoming nomads! that being said, memphis should move to seattle. i have no idea how NO is losing money..move clippers to the pond or san diego…if stern ok’s vegas move kings there! i am sick of all teams complaining and finally the nets should move to newark!

    Vancouver has a nice arena.

@jay interesting take. Kings to Vegas, Nets to Brooklyn, Grizz to Seattle, Pacers to St. Louis, Clippers BACK to San Diego. How much different would it be for all these teams to relocate in bigger cities (with exception of Clips)?

    The Vancouver Kings!

  • Brian

The Kings need to get a new arena, how else are they going to price out all the fans that have supported them all these years?

  • JB

Brian, those “fans” have already been priced out because Sacramento has no economy since it was built on false wealth.

Wonder how many people are enjoying their $600k home in Antelope?

I’ve been a Kings fan AND a Vancouver fan. If the Kings move, and its to Vegas or some evil &hit like that, I’m going to break down and start watching the CFL because I can’t handle another decade of sports heartbreak. If they move to Vancouver, I move to Vancouver.

The Maloofs have been quietly working on moving the Kings to Sin City for the better part of 4 years now.

Anchorage Kings! What? I’m from the Chi, but I’m livin’ in Alaska now! I need my NBA fix in person!

I bet if Sactown drafted Rubio they could have sold some tickets and this potential loss wouldn’t be as threatening. Hell, I would have bought a Kings Rubio jersey and I don’t care about that franchise at all.

  • Clark

2nd that Seth. Kings seriously screwed up. I firmly believe Tyreke Evans is the better player, but since when do the Kings care about that? They are just a D-League team in the NBA. Rubio would have brought in some $$ which is what they need. Evans is not going to fix the Kings…

  • Danny W UK

    Rochester Kings?

  • Big Johnny

hell yea bring the kings back to omaha for 2 years so they could lose a ton of money. i seriously would love that but that would be the most pointless move

    omaha (no kansas city) kings

They’ll find a Russian billionaire and he’ll buy the team and keep it there

  • Shem

Los Angeles Kings, and this is actually the worst franchise in the nba atleast the knicks have cap the kings dont have cap or any player worth keeping except k mart who is at best a teams second scoring option

  • vic21

    Calabasas Kings!

how does las vegas kings sound?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Seattle SuperKings. go Bender go Bender!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dave

Wyoming Kings! What the hell a Wyoming, anyway?

Actually, I got a better idea – delete the Kings and the Clips and have a contraction draft. Send Baron to the Knicks, Griffin to Grizz… wait, who’s on the Kings team again?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

    Sean May. Major offseason move.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

Vegas baby! Good luck fielding a winning team of 20-25 year olds in that city, though. I just mean they’re not going to be getting much sleep. And then you’d have the increased concern over gambling and point shaving, etc.. there’s gambling in NO and the Hornets are owned by Shinn

Sacramento has more tree’s than any other capital city in the world (Paris is second). Thats right, this matters that much.

GET BENT YOU CLOWNS.None of you know what a great city to live in sacramento is.And how much we care for our kings.Them leaving would be a travesty for a whole lot of people.GO AFTER ANOTHER TEAM VEGAS!!!!!!!!!!!
