A.I. to Make Decision on Memphis Today?

According to local media, today may mark the end of Allen Iverson’s free agent odyssey. Or, you know, not: “Free agent guard Allen Iverson finally is about to live up to his moniker. Iverson – known as The Answer – is expected to give the Grizzlies an answer Friday on whether he’ll accept their one-year offer, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations … More than a week has passed since the Grizzlies offered Iverson a contract using money the team has left under the salary cap. The Griz can pay Iverson at least $3.5 million or about $4.4 million should they renounce their rights to Spanish guard Juan Carlos Navarro. The latter figure wouldn’t be much less than the $5 million Memphis was willing to pay Iverson at the start of the free-agent period. The Griz are also prepared to add incentives to the deal.”

I’d like to see AI playing for the Knicks, but that will never happen. Memphis would be a baaaad fit for him.

Memphis grabbing Zach Randolph was like Cleveland grasping for Shawn Kemp. It may have looked like a good idea, but really never had any chance of success. Z-Bo won’t help anything.
    Regarding Iverson,
The lure of the star player on a team is breaking a lot of team’s backs lately and will continue to do so into the future. There appear to be far too many teams pinning their hopes on a ‘saviour’ type player, such as Wade or James arriving next year – whilst not truly appearing to have a contingency/back-up plan.
Iverson is no longer a ‘saviour’ type player. He just isn’t, and that is the harsh reality. He’s GOOD, and can (if he chooses to) help his team significantly, but not at the level he may have3 or 4 years ago.
For Memphis, acquiring Iveron does not fulfill a NEED. They don’t need another scorer. They need a back-up PG who can play solid defense and/or distribute the ball effectively to the multitude of scorers they already have. Another centre would help too, but they can use Z-Bo and Marc Gasol there if Haddidi ‘I’m the real star’ can’t get on.

    AI and Ehdadi?!! Awesome!

Memphis? Well at least it’s technically an NBA team.

@Gerald …..: Memphis is a perfect fit for him for the simple fact that they are a top-40 worldwide team willing to have him play basketball for them. (although i will wait to see if they still have him after his first few months and the expected marketing boost….most propably they will work out an excuse with him, like Detroit did, to send him home before he poisons whatever potential their young guys have…)

Why does everyone think Gerard’s name is Gerald?
    C’mon haha.

I want to play for this team. The senior leadership is Iverson and Z-bo. I. NEED. TO. PLAY. FOR. THIS. TEAM.

    Don’t do it =(

While I don’t usually agree with Spanny, I love the fact he referred to Memphis as a top-40 world team (because, you know, it’s actually sadly true that they wouldn’t make a top-30)

Still wondering why Charlotte is not stepping up to the plate. AI makes so much sense in CHA.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

Hursty: I’ve been wondering about that myself too. Aren’t there any Gerard’s in the U.S.? Is it that uncommon, or are there only Gerald’s there?

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

i actually know a Gerard, he works at Spencer’s.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

    Maybe he’ll get to be a difference-maker for a team in 2010-11.

  • MR4U

Artificial Intelligence making a decision about Memphis. Weird.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

what if AI DON’T get sign by a team? SLAMonline top50′s credibility goes right out the window.

  • Ken

@JE: who? Gerard? If he’s working at Spencer’s now, I doubt he’ll be a difference maker next year.

  • LeoneL

BET, You better step up your game wooing Ivey to the Cats.. I’d love to see him play next season. But not for the Grizzlies mainly because I want Rudy Gay to not leave Memphis. C’mon!, Memphis needs to get into the playoffs or we’re looking at a 29-team NBA season in the near future. I would rather see Ivey play for Larry Brown than having to play with three balls with Z-Bo and OJ on the 2.

  • Boudewijn

    Gerard, don’t feel bad.

  • Mike Klander

Well on the court this is a bad deal for Iverson. From a business standpoint, this will definitely revitalize basketball in that market.

  • Josh D

They shouldn’t sign AI he won’t fit in with the Grizz’s young nucleas, but if he does, then they’ll have AI with Mike Conley splitting time with him at the point, OJ mayo at the 2, Rudy Gay at SF,Zach Randolph and Thabeet in the post with Gasol as back up, although this team has one of the brightest futures in the L, i don’t see y they can’t make the playoffs in the 8th seed this year

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

someone named Boudewijn…. must be a dutchman! (or someone from Belgium)

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

@albie….:when you say “Antarctica” what you mean exactly…??

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

    Terrible fit.
AI, OJ, Rudy, and ZBO?! Even if Thabeet only takes 5 shots a game there won’t be enough to go around.

  • Mack

PLEASE DONT JOIN MEMPHIS ALLEN PLEASE YOU WILL NOT WIN THERE

  • LA Huey

if Iverson signs with Memphis, there will be punches thrown in the Memphis locker room and maybe on the bench.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dave

@LA Huey: ‘Long as he clocks Z-Bo I’d consider it a win.
@Hursty: Comparing Z-Bo to Kemp? Dude, that is so not appropriate. I’d let Kemp date my sister before I’d let Z-Bo on my team.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Okay Knicks, Donnie, you didn’t sign Sessions. SIGN ALLEN IVERSON THEN.

  • http://Www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

Albie: i thought that went out the window when the measurable, objective “criteria” of this year’s top 50 was what impact the stated players would have NEXT SEASON. As for this whole AI mess, let’s stop reporting on every rumor like slam was Tmz.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

The Article said…”The Griz are also prepared to add incentives to the deal.”
    __
Those incentives may or may not include starting, and not having to arrive at practice.

  • rikson

Whats up with AI now? Which team shall it be? It would be sad, if Iverson couldnt find any team…. but, ya know, its kind of his own fault!
