Why is A.I. Not in N.Y.?

A final plea to keep Allen Iverson out of Memphis.

by Jon HeAllen Iversoncht

Within a matter of hours, Allen Iverson may become the newest member of the Memphis Grizzlies. After franchise owner Michael Heisley, head coach Lionel Hollins and general manager Chris Wallace all met with A.I. for two hours on Monday, it seems likely that the two sides will reach a one-year deal for the upcoming ’09-10 season.

Iverson tweeted earlier Wednesday, “God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career.” But while basketball fans everywhere are preparing for the four-time NBA scoring champion to depart from the national spotlight, I’m still left wondering – why not let A.I. get the attention he deserves? Hey New York! Don’t let Iverson be buried in the ground when he could flourish in The Garden.

Hey Donnie Walsh, pick up the phone!

Earlier this off-season, the New York Knicks made it clear they were interested in two free agents – Ramon Session and Allen Iverson. Sessions was a stud last year, scoring more than 12 points and dishing nearly 6 assists per game. And he’s just 22 years old. By contrast, the 34-year-old Iverson had the worst season of his career. In an injury-plagued and unhappy year, the point guard played in only 54 games, averaged a career-low 17.4 ppg, and served as a bench player for a good portion of the season.

As the summer months breezed by, the Minnesota Timberwolves did what Donnie Walsh’s Knicks were oddly reluctant to do: The T-Wolves not only pulled the trigger on Sessions, they managed to sign the promising guard for only $16 million over a four-year term. With option No. 2 still on the table, at least temporarily, it’s time for Donnie Walsh to pick up the phone, talk with Iverson, and give New York something it hasn’t had in a decade – relevancy.

“We’re talking about practice”

Over the last 13 years, Allen Iverson has proven to be a prolific scorer at his position (his 27.1 career ppg ranks fifth all-time). In 71 playoff games, the guard averaged 29.7 points, 6 assists and 3.8 rebounds. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1996, crowned the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2000, played in 10 All Star games and earned All-Star game MVP honors twice.

But his ego at times has managed to overshadow these accomplishments. He upset the likes of NBA Commissioner David Stern, committing infractions ranging from publishing derogatory rap lyrics to disrespecting the NBA dress code. He has been fined thousands of dollars for criticizing NBA officials after games. Upon entering the League, he was even arrested in 1997 for carrying a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana. He has been ruled a ‘head case’ or a distraction by coaches, players, fans and pundits. There is no way a player with that type of resume and personality belongs in Memphis. The feisty 6-footer has played with the same ‘go big or go home’ mentality his entire career. He deserves nothing less than to return one last time to the big stage.

The reality is Iverson hasn’t made much noise, good or bad, in the NBA or off the court over the last two seasons. Following the November trade in 2008, Chauncey Billups took Denver by storm and became the talk of the town while Iverson seemingly lost his identity in Detroit… literally. A.I., who had worn No. 3 on his back for the entirety of his NBA career, was forced to switchAllen Iverson & Spike Lee to No. 1 for the Pistons. Weeks later, he was demoted to the bench and shut down for the year with an alleged back-injury.

It is highly unlikely that one of the NBA’s greatest, who still made $21 million last season, will actually want to continue serving as a bench player in Memphis for what could be his final season. He might bring a few thousand more Grizzlies or old Sixers fans to the FedEx Forum, but rest assured they would be the only ones to see him in action. Simply put, the Griz do not garner national attention or TV ratings, with or without him. Iverson would also be competing for playing time with young guards O.J. Mayo, Mike Conley and Marcus Williams, as well as veteran Marco Jaric. Surrounded by such a cast, A.I. may only play 20-25 minutes per game in that system. Finally, Mayo, along with Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph, demand the ball throughout the game. We all know Iverson is not the kind of player who likes (or needs) to share.

New York, New York

In New York, A.I. could be signed as a mid-level exception and instantly earn a starting point guard role over Chris Duhon or Nate Robinson. The exception is ideal for New York for both the long and short term. The mid-level exception would cost NY $5.85 million for one year, allowing the franchise to continue its quest to sign one of the young All-Star free agents in 2010 (namely LeBron James) and subsequently turn the franchise around.

With 2009 still a rebuilding year for the Knicks, Iverson would help New York make some noise this upcoming season and sell-out Madison Square Garden once again. With Jamal Crawford gone, nobody on the Knicks “needs” the ball. At the helm once again, Iverson could easily lead the Knicks in scoring and average at least 20 points, 6 assists per game. And hey, even if injury or age inhibits him from playing a full 82-game season, Iverson’s jersey sales will at least help cover the salaries of Larry Hughes and Eddie Curry.

Cause Donnie Walsh must be on vacation or simply out of his mind.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I was a bit puzzled by NY not goin for him too…

  • J

Huge mistake for NY and Miami to sleep on ALLEN IVERSON, he gives 100% in every game, he’s fearless,
determined and hungry for a so-deserved championship.

  • riggs

word, and do they think that with iverson already there that lebron wouldnt be a least bit interested? (even though he is NOT coming here)

  • riggs

also i know its a hypothetical one-year contract, but you never know with new york.

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

great article. Completely agree. Iverson is a bargain and could still put up 25 a night given a nice system A LA d’antoni. he would kill it NY. knicks brass is dumb.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I agree with riggs. Lebron would be at least a bit more interested to join AI in NY rather than well.. nobody in NY. (well there’s al harrington and david lee.. but.. not really big names..)

  • http://www.sonicbids.com/shaemorin doyouwantmore

I agree with the whole article as well. There must be something that Donnie, D’Antoni, and lots of other Coaches, GM’s and owners know about, and the desperate-to-fill-the-seats Grizzlies don’t care about.

Jon is so right. Wished he went to the Knicks.

  • The Gambler

John is dead wrong, and as a Knick fan, noone with our best interest in mind would… We don’t need another self-serving ball chucker who never won anything and can’t adjust his game a little bit to incorporate others into the offense. He is a team stifler. How many years does he have to play for A.I. fans to realize that for all of his talent and ability. He is a terrible fit for any team trying to build chemistry and develop young talent, as teh Knicks are successfully doing. The Knicks and Donnie Walsh have a game plan. It includes LeBron James. It doesn’t include A.I. .. Thank God..

I have always been a huge Iverson fan. I always thought he gave 100% no matter what. In November of last year I went to a Suns vs Pistons game and my image of him changed completely. He honestly acted like he could care less to play that game. Steve Nash was not only abusing him on offense, but on defense too. STEVE NASH! You could tell it was an effort issue too. After seeing that and hearing all the stories of A.I last year I can see how not too many people want him.

  • andrew

ummm Maybe NY isnt trying to improve their roster so they can suck more than ever and secure the number 1 pick for next seasons draft so Utah can get even better

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Knicks passing on Sessions, and not signing Allen Iverson is like double the sucking. Its like a 3 year old kid is running the Knicks, which makes me wonder just where in the heck Donnie Walsh really is.

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

I don’t know what’s going on in New York anymore. Part of me wants to believe Walsh and D’Antoni are playing a brilliant chess game and are set to blow us all away in 2010. But most of thinks that at this point they look more like they’re sitting around with their thumbs up their big apples.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

If the Knicks wasted all these chances at nabbing Free Agents to sign RICKY RUBIO, I’m putting my status as a fan on hold.

  • Dyce

The Gambler honestly who cares if Iverson messed up the chemistry the knicks had?? D’antoni system is built for AI…Just look at what Nate does when he comes in the game he just chucks…AI does this and is a better scorer and passer than him definetely an upgrade….And he would sell tickets and make the knicks more able to watch…I mean who is he taking shots away from?? Chris Duhon??? Come on AI to the knicks!

  • LeoneL

Since the Knicks didn’t grab Sessions, I’m now lobbying for Donnie to trade for Ivey. Give Memphis Curry, heck, they traded for Z-Bo right?

  • a bkln

AI might never again deliver wins, but agree he’d sure deliver fans to lots of otherwise empty garden seats.

  • hillary h

i miss the knicks of the early ’70s- a polite and smart club with natural intellingce, not AI . it would take alot to bring me back to the garden.

  • don

i’ve never thought about this, but now– it does make sense.

AI would be scoring every other 30seconds that he’s on the floor, all the other NY players just needs to rebound and defend.

  • chintao

The Gambler belongs in Arkham, because his post is both criminal and insane. The words “Knicks” and “success” have not gone together since The Waterboy hit that one-in-a-million shot against Miami. There is no development of young talent (aside from Wilson Chandler, perhaps). There is only stockpiling of cheap labor. The only it makes sense to write any of what The Gambler put down is if he’s a paid shill for the organization (a word I hesitate to apply to the Knicks). I do not see any reason why Walsh would have a problem adding Iverson, so it seems more likely that D’Antoni put the kibosh on that prospect. It seems that D’anni-boy prefers his players to be more vanilla, in both appearance and style of play. I would not be surpirsed if the Knicks eventually take it back to the days of Adolph Rupp (without the coaching ability, of course).

  • Renk

Last I checked neither Walsh nor D’Antonio has won anything either ….. This whole 2010 plan better not blow up …… after this debacle of a offseason …. and what’s looking more and more like another disappointing season

Nice piece John…Actually he was MVP in 2001…

  • Cmac

Yeah i wouldn’t mind the knicks being relevant again.
and i wanna see my man doin what he does best leading a team and playing every game like its his last

  • http://BumperTunes.com Cdogg

A good way to get Iverson to play his ass off is to give him 1 year, laced with incentives. I’m serious… it’s a good idea!

  • http://BumperTunes.com Cdogg

Of course, the whole Z-Bo black hole might prove interesting. So glad Portland dumped him when they did. It’s weird to think there was a full season when LaMarcus Aldridge & B Roy played with Randolph being the first option. Who’s the first option in Memphis? I’d just tell them separately that they are each the first option. How else will they stay interested?

p.s. I guess I have to get NBA League Pass for sure this year.

  • http://leogau.com Leo

I think the reason AI didn’t get signed is that Walsh wants to showcase and develop the young “talent” they have now. Show the ’10 FAs this is a good, young team and not some sort of circus.

I can’t think of any other reason why AI in NY for a year didn’t happen. I hope Walsh knows what he’s doing.

  • http://kingslayer.wordpress.com The Kingslayer

The Knicks suck, and they have for damn near a decade. Whatever plan they have going I need to see some results. In that span of time A.I. actually helped teams. Are we seriously saying that he’d make a horrible Knick team even worse? There is just some personal hate for A.I. It can’t be logic, or even based on anything tangible. Lord knows it’s not on stats, because if his are bad then you are not a basket ball lover on any level. 6 feet, and 175 pounds. Yeah lot’s of greats come with that in the league…Morons

  • J-Sizzle

I don’t want AI in NY. The knicks have a history of signing ball-hogs and past-their-prime players and what has it given us? Marbury, Q-Rich, Zach Randolph, Eddie Curry, Steve Francis, Vin Baker, Jerome James… the list goes on. Let’s throw AI on there while we’re here. At least they can say the Knicks are consistent in their decisions.
