San Antonio Spurs Season Preview.

We conclude the Southwest Division pManu Ginobilireviews with the San Antonio Spurs. You can read past previews here.

by Ryan Desmarais

The San Antonio Spurs might be the most boring team in the NBA.

Seriously.

I mean, there’s nothing exciting about the way they play. They want a slow tempo to all of their games. It seems like they want their offense to be as methodical as possible in order to put opposing teams to sleep, while they’re defense takes advantage of the mistakes made by their groggy opponents.

Their superstar’s nickname is “The Big Fundamental.” That might be the most boring, bland nickname I’ve ever heard in the history of sports.

NBA fans can thank Gregg Popovich for this “style” of play. He likes to keep a controlled tempo and make sure his team doesn’t get into shootouts with some of the run-and-gun teams in the West like Phoenix and Golden State. In fact, the Spurs haven’t averaged 100 points a game over a season this decade.

But something tells me that Popovich couldn’t care less about entertaining us.

Actually, a few things tell me that: his three four championship rings.

The Spurs played as their extremely boring selves last season and, once again, made the postseason. But something was different about this team. They seemed even more boring than before. One thing after another went wrong for a team that seemingly has yearly title aspirations.

Injuries and age appeared to catch up to the core of the Spurs. Manu Ginobili, their most exciting player (which is kind of like being the MVP of the Beer League), was injured during the Olympics, appeared in only 44 games and clearly wasn’t completely right. Tony Parker suffered a sprained ankle early in the season while Ginobili was recovering and missed a couple of weeks. Tim Duncan would miss a few games later in the season, as well.

They also suffered from very little depth. Aside from a good year from Roger Mason, Jr., the Spurs had to rely on the recently retired Bruce Bowen, 36-year-old Michael Finley, 37-year-old Kurt Thomas, and Matt Bonner, one of the greatest basketball players to ever come out of the state of New Hampshire (once again, see the Beer League analogy). While offering great experience, they’re far from in their prime and couldn’t offer everything the depleted Spurs needed to pick up the slack.

The end result? Gettting blown out of the playoffs by their in-state rivals, the Dallas Mavericks.

Fast forward to this season and everyone who talks about San Antonio talks about the steal of the offseason: Richard Jefferson. The Spurs traded a bag of basketballs and some Gatorade to the Bucks for the Jefferson, who immediately bolsters their offense and gives them a deeper roster. RJ has the ability to both move without the ball as well as create his own shot, allowing the floor to open up for Parker and Ginobili to penetrate.

They took their thieving momentum into the NBA Draft and kidnapped Pittsburgh power forward DeJuan Blair in the second round, as I still question how he was passed over time after time. Blair gives the Spurs another wide body that can work well in the post and he is an excellent rebounder on both ends of the floor, which was possibly his strongest asset in college.

They added another veteran in Antonio McDyess, a guy who has been able to resurrect his career after a solid first few years in the League were tarnished by numerous injury-plagued seasons. He gives the Spurs another big that can play inside and collect boards as well as hit the mid-range jumper when left open. At 35, he’s long past his prime, but San Antonio won’t be asking him to be the franchise savior. He’ll just be another weapon that can play 15 to 20 minutes a night and contribute.

But the biggest assets for the Spurs continue to be their mainstays. Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker are still three of the best players in the League and are needed to perform at a high level on a nightly basis in order for this team to have a chance to reach their goal. Duncan has been one of the most consistent players in the NBA over his career as you can pretty much mark him down to average 20 and 10 every season. Ginobili continues to be a dangerous threat offensively with his ability to penetrate as well as knock down outside shots. He is also a pesky defender who will get his steals and take charges. Parker, who is amazingly only 27, is just coming into his prime years and has become both a fantastic scorer and a very good facilitator.

And Popovich will still lead this team into battle every night. He’s arguably a top-three coach in the League and a future Hall of Famer and his players continue to buy into his coaching style, regardless of how boring we may think it is.

So what can we expect from the Spurs this season? Pretty much what we’ve seen from them all decade. They’ll win 55 to 60 games during the regular season and make a deep playoff run.

But how far will they go? If healthy, they’ll be right there with the Lakers as one of the teams to represent the West in the Finals. If they’re walking wounded, there’s a good chance they’ll be playing golf in May and June.

Either way, don’t expect any high-scoring affairs this season with the Spurs.

Or any other season, for that matter.

Don’t forget to grab your pillow.

    pop has 4 rings

  • KenneR

I don’t know it is boring or not, but this kind of playing style helped us to get 4 rings..
And now, let’s start the drive for 5!

  • KenneR

I don’t know it is boring or not,but this kind of playing style helped us to get 4 rings..so I would like to watch my Spurs’s style for many many more years!
Let’s start the drive for 5!

  • kay_nock

Come on mate! if your going to write a article and use the word boring every 2-3 words atleast put a better effort into it! Pop actually has 4 rings. Because they’re are so “boring”, is that why they are considered to be the best team the last decade?…hmmm I wonder…PHO run and gun high scoring and entertaining team that hasn’t made a trip to the finals since Barkley was there. Give me more boring basketball and deep playoff runs then!

  • kobesbestfriend

now that “dirty” Bowen has retired Kobe is gonna dismantle SA every year until he calls a quits!!!

  • Omar3

Pop will have 5 rings by next June. Duncan has slimmed down to help his knees and to play better ball. Since this year’s first 1st round exit, Duncan is dedicated for that full fist of rings. He will win them before Kobe and Shaq no doubt.

  • jport1975

I stopped reading when he got the number of rings wrong….

  • jport1975

to Kobesbootybuddy (kobesbestfriend)….Nothing makes is better than beating LA and watching Kobe try to man up and not cry…the lip quiver is always priceless. First off, you need to hope Ron does not jack up you team chemistry. Then you need to get off of the Kobe sack and realize SA is the only team that can take LA down, and WILL this year. Since you’re Kobes best friend you can bring the tissue and hand Kobe his baby bottle after he loses in the WCF this year.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Uhm……….this is a pretty undeserved preview.

  • Babygab

If the Spurs stay healthy, they are going to the NBA finals period. There’s no way L.A could beat them. I’m looking forward to a Celtics-Spurs final. That would be a grown men final, bringing the 90′s back….

  • jport1975

This guy just spat out the same garbage that others have been saying for year. “The Spurs are boring.” Seriously? Is that your briliiant observation in this team? Hey why don’t start doing weather so you can tell people, “There’s going to be some clouds outside, somewhere….and some wind..” Nice job, how about next time TRYING to put some real thought into this…

  • Jessdogg

“Actually, a few things tell me that: his three four championship rings.”

    it clearly says four

  • Pacman

This article is boring. I’m used to a higher quality of analysis from Slam writers, but this one was phoned in. Come on man, how about some original insight or at least something other than cliches about the “boring” Spurs. They’re (the conjunction correctly used here, but I believe you meant to use the possessive) only boring if you don’t like good team basketball. However, if you enjoy crisp ball movement, sharp cuts, player screens all over the court, and one of the best defensive schemes in NBA history, then you might want to actually check out a Spurs game some time.

  • kobesbestfriend

can some1 pls tell me who is gonna guard mamba on SA now that “dirty” bruce is gone???kobe is gonna murder these losers!!!

  • Pacman

So apparently my grammatical criticism was edited or I read it incorrectly. My apologies. This article is still lame.

  • Yak

We got the point, you think the Spurs are boring. Too bad you have no understanding of Spurs’ ball, people are often bored by what they don’t understand. Watching DeJuan Blair and Richard Jefferson in the preseason, I don’t think anyone will find them boring. Anyway I can’t wait for this boring team to kick you team’s butt.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Co-sign Pacman.

  • Babygab

@kobesbestfriend: do you remember in the 1996 ECF when the bulls will let Shaq get all the points he wanted, but then shut down the rest of the team ? Same strategy might work against L.A. Nobody can guard Kobe, and to be really honest Bruce was there only for damage control, ’cause sometime Kobe really did own his a##. So let Kobe do his things. But then take care of the rest of the team and L.A’s offense will be disrupted. L.A doesn’t have what it takes to beat a healthy San Antonio team. And believe San Antonio is even more dangerous this year.

Atleast have respect to put effort into your preview. You are lucky to get paid at something you enjoy doing, following the NBA. I hate the Lakers and love the Spurs, but even I would give them enough respect not to put my personal thoughts in a preview I’m writing for them. I respect your opinion, but you dont get the great opportunity of writing about the NBA and use it to show such disrespect as you have shown here, I’m sure this piece took you 5 minutes, you didnt even have the decency to do some homework. Its 4 rings, I feel bad for you.

  • kobesbestfriend

1996 ECF???Shaq was playing with losers and coached by a dummy named B Hill and not 2 mention if Ho Grant didnt get injured they probly woulda beat the bulls…but anyhow Kobe is the best player in the world with a stellar cast surrounding him, and coached by the zen master so i doubt the spurs would be able 2 use that same strategy on mamba!the Lakers have dominated the spurs in the postseason this last decade and i dont see any proof that its gonna change with the addition of has beens RJ or Mcdyess!

  • http://slamonline.com yani

damn. maybe the spurs was boring the past few years but this upcoming season they are now fantastic to watch with the addition of RJ plus a healthy elictrifying manu and a beast in the place of de juan blair.

  • RedRum

does Slam hire 11 year old kids to write these articles?? Has anyone who writes these articles ever played basketball on a real team, rather than eight-feet hoop on their backyard? Watching TP going taking it to the cup like a maniac is boring? Manu running the fast break and doing his trick shots is boring? TD spinning around helpless defenders is boring? I am not a Spurs fan, but I a basketball fan, and I do appreciate how the Spurs play. Came on SLAM, it would not hurt if you hired people that have at least a driving license and can count to four…

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

You really didn’t want to write this one, huh Ryan? The Spurs’ upgrade deserves a little more enthusiasm. They got younger, more athletic and usually rebound in a big way when they don’t make it deep into the playoffs the previous year. And, by the by, I for one happen to find fundemental, methodical basketball beautiful. And fun to watch!

  • peter

Richard Jeff. Mcdyess, and blair. HAHAHAHA. These are the acquisitions san antonio is proud of???

  • http://spurs.com MAHAMOUD

Forget about all the negative comments, he said something very important”If healthy, they’ll be right there with the Lakers as one of the teams to represent the West in the Finals”.

  • OhMyLady

this artical is very, very bad my friend. i really suggest revising it because there alot of factual errors

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Ummm, yes? Those are actually incredible additions to Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobli. So why are you laughing?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    That’s just like saying:
Lakers got Ron Artest. HAHAHAHAHAHAA. That’s an acquisition they’re proud of???
    Or:
Celtics got Rasheed Wallace. HAHAHAHAHAH. That’s an acquisition they’re proud of???
    You decide.

  • RedRum

Teddy, you act like you have the mental age and basketball understanding of a kid that still plays with teddies..

  • james

@ peter, yeah, that was lame

  • TADOne

“So what can we expect from the Spurs this season? Pretty much what we’ve seen from them all decade. They’ll win 55 to 60 games during the regular season and make a deep playoff run.”
The writer could have just sent in this paragraph with a picture of a big middle finger and called it a day.

  • funkdoc

I used to hate the spurs. Now I start to hate people – especially journalists who bring up the same arguments every time – who hate the spurs. Seriously, I’m supporting the spurs this season. They have a hell of a team, a deep team and are more motivated than ever. If everybody’s healthy, I think the spurs are one of the biggest threats this season. Boring or not. If you want to review an upcoming season, do it based on statistics. I mean, I pretty much knew how this article was gonna be written. It gets quite boring to read the word boring year after year when reading about the spurs. Maybe you should think about that Slam…

  • whooo!

what is going on here SLAM? i expect crap work from ESPN, but it looks like the laziest piece of crap from Mr. Desmarais. boring? the article was, but not the team. the spurs had bad defense last year, scored more off 3s, and Tony Parker is extremely exciting to watch. yet the EASY way to go is to say, “the Spurs are boring” and live with that mentality. come on slam, don’t let crap like this ruin your rep. i hope Desmarais actually puts in some work before coming up with his next entry. BORING.

  • ron

Winning is not boring, Spurs are proven winners….nuff said

  • JD

Peter, RJ, DeJuan Blair(who had 16 points and 19 boards in his debut and 28 points last night), and McDyess r way better editions than Ron Artest and pretty much no one else

  • JD

Plus RJ is the only edition to the top 5 teams in the L who couldn’t potentially mess up the Franchise or hasn’t before at some point in their career, Shaq, VC ,Ron Artest, and Sheed?! Common!

  • kevin

your stupid! ill grab my pillow and watch the spurs in june win another title

  • Sarah

I’m so sick of hearing how “boring” the Spurs are. This regurgitation of bullsh*t was so unoriginal that I couldn’t finish reading it. You tell me what’s boring.

  • Sandlot

This is a terrible article. I’ve never seen such a good team receive so much disrespect. For such a boring team, I have seen alot of great games that they have been involved in. Phx/Sa game 1 of 2007 playoffs comes to mind. I am not really a Spurs “fan,” but I always go to the games when they come to town. At least I know they will bring pro skills.

  • Sandlot

Oops, I think it was Phx/Sa 2008 playoffs.

  • Chuck

The facts are this: You plan to track a team year after year after year that has a winning record, no matter what the odds, and the Spurs will probably be the team you have to choose. When they don’t do as well as the wanted, they don’t whine and cry about it, they simply try to improve incrementally. You bet on Pop – you’ll be a winner too. By the way, do they give rings for journalism, REALLY POOR JOURNALISM?

  • Addison Welch

This is completely unbelievable. You’ve obviously never watched a Spurs game before, and are just going off of the highlight films that ESPN runs on Sports Center. If you’ve ever even watched a game on tv, you’d know that Parker is one the fastest point guards in the league and can steal and penetrate into the paint better than almost anyone. And you obviously have never watched a Spurs playoff series, which, even when they lose, are always close. They didn’t lose any game of the series last year by more than 10 points, and two of those loses came down to the last minute. And you obviously never saw any of the several playoff series against the Suns, which were perhaps the most compelling and physical games I’ve ever seen. I mean with less than 20 seconds left in the first game of the 2007 series with the Spurs down two, Duncan takes a three point shot…and makes it…his first make of the season. If you’re gonna insult the Spurs, at least do your research, and write at a higher level than a middle school kid with a grudge.

  • Michael

you are an idiot. spurs are not boring. you don’t know what you are talking about. people who call the spurs boring know nothing about basketball. you’re pathetic.

  • sg446

stop saying the spurs are boring…when will networks like espn and fox get a nonbias NBA analysts..tht is analysts who dnt D*@k ride the lakers nonstop!!!

  • sg446

stop saying the spurs are boring…when will networks like espn and fox get a nonbias NBA analysts..tht is analysts who dnt D*@k ride the lakers nonstop!!!

  • Simmy Sosa

Congratulations Ryan. Not only did you display a dizzying lack of basketball knowledge, you managed to regurgitate a dated analysis that has not applied to this team in years. Way to do your research. Its simple. If you don’t like the team, don’t do the preview. The purpose of the team preview is to let fans know where/what to expect from the franchise. If you just want to give your sh%tty opinion, leave the preview to someone else and post in the comments section.

  • GeoSpursGeo

This guy who wrote this article needs a friggin cat scan…the SPURS have the best winning percentage the past decade then any other team in ALL of professional sports!! Plus FOUR (yes 4) titles in the past 10 years and one more on the way…This will be the best team in the past few years for the SPURS and they have been anything but boring. This article should be shot down and the writer be fired for disrespecting such a dignified group. This is my first article read on this POS website and I wont be back again…end of line.

  • Jet

Actually, I think the Spurs play exciting basketball. Tony Parker’s quickness, Manu’s speed and agility and Duncan’s consistency – nothing can be more exciting to a real basketball fan.

  • http:///realcavsfans.com Anton

DeJuan Blair > Andrew Bynum. Already. Smart, tough, and changed his game after his injuries and still thrives. I don’t care if you’re playing D-league teams, 19 rebounds is still crazy. Dropped 28 on the Heat the other night too. Thabeet must be rolling in his grave.

  • http://slamonline.com jj

How dare you call the spurs boring. Like Jet just posted, any real fan of basketball couldn’t possibly label the Spurs as boring. They are the epitome of how basketball should be played!
