Rip Hamilton: Michael Curry’s a Liar

Allen Iverson’s former teammate supports the claim that Michael Curry isn’t the most trustworthy guy in the world: “M.C. lied to us a million times,’ Hamilton said of Curry. ‘He sat me and A.I. down one time and was like, ‘I’m going to lean on both of you the whole year, just don’t go to the media. Say you’ll do whatever for the team and blah blah blah.’ This was a week before he brought me off the bench. He lied. So I feel for what Allen said.’ He added: ‘I think the person that we had didn’t know how to take advantage of (our roster). Instead of taking advantage of it, he killed it.”‘

It will be interesting to see how this season plays out for AI and although he’s not playing tonight, how the Detroit players respond to him. For AI’s sake, I wish Hamilton and other’s would have come out and said something earlier. The court of public opinion has really hurt AI’s rep by more than what his actions deserved.

  • Jacqueline Mitchell

Richard is right:Because Allen Iverson in my opinion got a really raw deal in Detroit.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

    Well. That settles that.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I can’t wait to watch Allen Iverson lay a smackdown on the Detroit Pistons.
But at least Rich Hamilton is still cool.

  • iLL wiLL

MC was a snake back when he was with the Raps for a minute. Nobody on the squad liked him. Not totally surprising here.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Does it Myles?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Old news…MC was terrible, there was a reason nobody on the team respected the guy. I honestly think that team could have been a 4th or 5th seed in the East if they kept Flip around. MC’s player rotations were probably the worst rotations (if you could even call them rotations) I’ve ever seen in the NBA.

    sorry bout the double post.

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

The starting line-up for the pistons last year should have been AI,RIP,Tayshaun,Dice, and Sheed. But I sortve get why He started Stcukey most of the year so he could have some expirience before this season of change but all that did was create porblems for the whole team.

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

@ Wayno. If the Pistons wouldve kept Flip around we would have been a 2nd or 3rd seed no doubt. But everything happens for a reason and we reloaded with young talent and the furutre is bright in Detroit.

  • Cizzo

Ship Curry out of there A.S.A.P.!!!!!

  • dfrance

I think the players are to blame for MC being there. Aren’t they the same ones that allegedly tuned out Flip Saunders which led to his firing? Whats the point of Rip coming out and bashing MC now? When Detroit sucks this year it’ll be the same thing all over again. I think Dumars has run his course, blow the whole thing up, get rid of Rip for some draft picks or a young guard and start from scratch.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Why didn’t Rip saying anything earlier..

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Wayno
    So, it’s old news? Interesting.

  • http://www.nba.com JE

Cizzo: Ship him out of where, exactly?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

niQ – I think RIP coming out and saying that in the regular season just would have cause more drama. There was ALOT of drama on that team last season, but most of it was internal, not it’s just coming out more. Speaking against your coach during the season never help your team. I do have to co-sign dfrance though, alot of the players did kind of run Flip out of town and it was uncalled for. I think Detroit will win like 44 or 45 games this season and get bumped in the first round…they’re like 2 or 3 moves away from being a contender again.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    not = now

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Uhm……anyone with half a brain knew what the deal was. AI was f*cked by the stupidity of the media in this particular circumstance and that just blows.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

There’s no debate that the situation sucked…but does that warrent certain actions by certain players? I think not…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    @ allenp – yes

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ Eboy – by internal I mean there wasn’t a ton of players complaining to the media etc…but yes, people knew what was going on to some extent.

  • Clark

Whatever, Curry was terrible and now he’s gone. I think Coach Q is a good fit, and after watching yesterdays Cavs v Celts game, I think another bonus is it looks like he is a big loss to the Cavs, seeing as they are back to there ‘give lebron the ball and see what happens’ offensive scheme.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Wayno
So, what you’re telling me is that you knew Michael Curry was a liar who was alienating his players, and yet you still felt the need to regularly bash Iverson for what happened in Detroit?
    That seems….strange.
I mean, you know the coach is effing up, you know he’s lying to a superstar player who has a reputation for flipping out when he’s lied to or disrespected, and yet you still decide to blame said player for the collapse of the team?
    That sounds personal, not logical.
Like I said from the jump, Iverson was scapegoated by the media and by Detroit fans. People ran with rumors in order to validate perceptions they had from the jump. Iverson is selfish, me-first and a team killer. These perceptions aren’t based on comments from his former teammates, but based on what folks feel in their guts.
And nobody really wants to admit it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Um, I didn’t blame Allen Iverson for the situation in Detroit…and I still don’t my stance the ENTIRE time has been that the situation was very two sided. I didn’t have the highest regard for Allen Iverson before the situation though, and this certainly didn’t help. Please point to me solely blaming AI for Detroit’s situation…I never did that. I still think AI is not a winner and he kills team chemistry, but that team, on talent alone, should have been at least the 5th seed in the east, that’s where the complete mismanagment of the roster comes into play. Also, please note how I said certain playerS actions…plural form buddy…Sheed dogged it all season, RIP had his moments of fussiness, and Allen Iverson did a combination of those two things after awhile. Terrible coach or not, it’s not an excuse to act that way.

    Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

You’ll see if you look back that my posts have largely reflected this viewpoint with perhaps the exception of my arguments with Tavoris because I REALLY enjoy annying him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    *annoying

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

This is just depressing to read about.

  • knock knock

Who cares??!? Nobody knows the truth, besides the fact that as soon as allen iverson came, the pistons resorted to .500 ball. It was straight hilarious. 30 min a game and a.i. couldn’t do sh^^t.

  • ha

    Joel O’s….grow up yo.

  • Jake

@Joel O-I totally agree. All year it seemed like MC was trying to derail the team,I’m not sure why management didn’t step in around the all-star break and can him. That team could have been absolutely nasty if they were utilized properly and instead AI got called a whining over the hill shot chucker by everyone under the sun.UGH!

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I really feel bad for AI, you could see from his interviews that he was TOTALLY blindsided by this off the bench/reduced role thing because they told him that they had traded for him to basically be AI (i.e. get buckets, a lot). I guess it’s great that Rip is shedding some light to the situation but where was he at the end of the regular season? The whole team had turned on AI. It’s really easy to say now that MC and AI are gone. And because of that, all the contenders that could have used AI to get over the hump passed on him and he will finish his career in a meaningless squad. Sad.

  • Omar3

See…Allen Iverson does tell the Truth and deserves to be on a good team after all. The Coach does make a difference. Mike Brown is looking like a good coach, but the players are helping him do that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Allen, Yes. Yes it does. Given the circumstances and AI’s rep, I didnt feel that he was entirely forthright, but if a teammate who is still on the Pistons corroborates his story then it would just be stubborn of me to persist. Now stop gloating.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ Z – The whole team turned on AI? Really? Here’s an example of AI’s take on his relatioship with RIP which was perceived to be horrible…

(On the perceived rift between you and Richard Hamilton)

AI: “I didn’t hear that one, out of all the rumors I heard. That’s something new to me. I have a great relationship with him, and nothing changed in my time in Detroit. It wasn’t Rip’s fault. He didn’t have anything to do with any of the decisions made around there.”

Granted, he’s only talking about one player, but I suggest you check your facts. Here’s another revealing recent quote that would maybe support the fact that he tends to kill chemistry a bit…

Are you willing to accept coming off the bench here in Memphis?

“Nah, I won’t accept it. Bench came into the play when I came to Detroit. You never heard about Allen Iverson coming off the bench ever in my whole career. It was never something people even thought in their head until I came to Detroit. Now it’s the big topic. I’d be crazy to just out of my mouth say, ‘I’d be comfortable with being a guy coming off the bench.’ That’s never a role I ever had.”

This is the same guy who said he’d do anything for the team…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Myles
I couldn’t tell if you were serious. I thought you were being sarcastic….
And I want to stop gloating, but it’s so hard.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Maybe he’s finishing his career on a meaningless squad because he’s unwilling to accept a lesser role Z…just maybe…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Wayno
Iverson said he and Rip had no problems. But, the idea that they were beefing was all over the next and mainstream media sources. That was the common feeling that Rip was upset about Chauncey leaving and he was unhappy with Iverson. So, while the two of them were cool, everybody else was saying they hated each other.
Now, when exactly did Iverson kill chemistry? Not in Denver where they won 46 and 50 games despite injuries both years he was there. Not in Philly either. So where was he killing chemistry besides in Detroit, where it’s obvious that the coach was the problem.
Finally, saying you would do anything for the team is like saying you’re reading to come in and get right to work at a new job.
Sure you want to work, but that doesn’t mean you don’t surf the net or stretch lunch. It doesn’t meant that you want to work seven days a week. It means that you want to do what you consider to be reasonable.
Iverson changed up his game in Detroit. He took fewer shots, he worked harder on defense, he tried to be a set-up guy for a while. Exactly how was his refusal to come off the bench a betrayal of what he said when he came to the team? People who feel like that was a betrayal are being very unrealistic.

  • don

rip should have said something earlier when AI was perceived as a liar.

  • NUPE

Guess we won’t see Curry coaching anytime in the near future. It’s a shame what he did to his own career and the grief he’s caused for AI. AI is not without fault of his own, but Curry is just foul.

  • Tommy Patron

Curry will totally be coaching somewhere else sooner than later. This country has an attention span as long as this comment. There is no truth any longer.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Curry will NOT be a head coach somewhere else. Assistant, maybe…..and that’s a big maybe for the forseeable future.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Allen Iverson gets no respect. I mean, it’s great that Rip said something now, but man — the whole thing is plain stupid.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

The whole situation was stupid, but everyone gets a piece of the blame. This includes: Iverson, Dumars, Curry, Rip. And also Sheed and Tay, since they were the veterans and supposed to be the leaders. Last season was just a clusterf*ck of ineptitude and excuses that I hope I never have to see again. Ok, i’m done discussing this.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

And hell, i’ll blame Kwame too since Jordan found it so much fun.

  • Tommy Patron

@ TAD-We’ll see about Curry coaching again. Remember, he was a “well-respected” leader of the player’s union. Also, think about Jim Lynam, Alvin Gentry, Don Casey, John Lucas, Mike Dunleavy and P.J. Carlesimo.

  • knock knock

Seriously guys, Who played basketball and blamed their coach if they couldn’t get the win??? Allen iverson was given 30 min to make sumthin happen, same wit rip, and they failed. So what if they’r not playing the whole game, the pistons went straight to .500 ball as soon as iverson came. Btw, ima just have to say lets see what a.i. can do wit the grizzlies. Only if a.i.makes the playoffs, will he be worth the 100 mill he made over the years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

You know what I find funny people posting here blamed AI all year than when AI said they lied Jukai said AI is lying. Now Rip comes out n says this and those people dont post and its obvious that Wayno tried clearing up what he said. Dude you have been hating on AI all year now stick to it just because the truth came out does not mean you have to act like you werent wrong you were rong guys like me, Allen P, Teddy the bear, Tavoris. Conclusion is AI got a bad deal in Detroit and it almost ruined his career now he is like a rookie trying to prove everyone he can still play when this is supposed to be the year guys like KG and Pierce or other contenders would have asked AI to come to help win a ring.

  • rikson

@Pardeep: get a girlfriend – nobody wants to talk about that ish anymore!
I never understood whats the big problem with coming of the bench?! I mean a “benchplayer” can even play more min than a starter – still ignorant players will act like little girls once they are told. Where are the Starks of today….. One more thing on the “hate” issue. Im gonna introduce a new term here “youre loving on someone”…. So if Im hatin you gotta be loving on him – right? Thats how useless the whole “hate” argument is…

  • tavoris

Allenp…HOW MANY PEOPLE UP HERE GOT ON ME (and AI, and Scoop) FOR SAYING THAT AI’s VERSION OF THE STORY WAS LIKELY THE TRUTH? I’m awfully surprised that Rip came out and corroborated it, but the truth is-and did-come to light.

  • tavoris

oh, and Wayno, you don’t annoy me…you disturb me. It’s almost frightening that someone-in today’s universally connected age-can be so closed-minded about things. That’s precisely why I moved above the Mason-Dixon line.

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

see i told everyone this was never allen iversons fault. the pistons lied, michael curry lied!

  • tavoris

oddly, I don’t see certain notorious anti-Iverson posters giving their input on the situation, especially since the corroboration that was requested has just been given…

  • tavoris

rikson…must we go thru this again? How can you even try to defend the Pistons (and further villify AI), when a current Piston (and the one on the team with the most seniority) has CORROBORATED his story about last season? Come on, dude…
