Tyrus Thomas Unhappy with Bench Role

Something called Taj Gibson started at the 4-spot for the Bulls last night, which did not amuse Tyrus Thomas: “Was Thomas surprised he’s not starting? ‘A little bit, but he’s the guy who makes decisions,’ Thomas said before the game, referring to coach Vinny Del Negro. ‘I don’t even think it should be questionable, from what I’ve contributed to the team last season and what I did throughout camp. But like I said, he’s the guy making the decisions. Whatever decision he makes, I still have to go out and play.’”

I doubt he’ll be starting on the bench come regular season.. If he is, then he deserves to get out.

Why not just let Rose coach the Bulls? Bill Russell and Lenny Wilkins did it back in the day, and he has as much experience as Del Negro did to start last season anyway.

  • Yesse

Ohh come on, Tyrus. It’s preseason it’s not that important.Im sure you will start in the season.

  • JP

I saw Jerome James warm-up yesterday and Benny the Bull beat him in a race down the sideline ………. lol

  • Matt

Taj Gibson is playing better and can shoot outside of 5 feet. Trade Thomas! Too many years already of hype. He stinks!

  • la huey

whatever, ty. maybe if your game wasn’t practically identical to your college days…

  • sab

stupid reporters with stupid questions then writing nonsense reports about nothing stories

  • Clark

He better start. I have him on my fantasy team.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I was speaking to some fellow scribes last night at the game and I told them that if Taj Gibson keeps progressing the way he is, he’ll be the reason the Bulls would feel comfortable in getting rid of Tyrus. Needless to say, we were all in agreement.

  • doom

wow… I’m sure happy the blazers traded this scrub for LaMarcus Aldridge. Man… It’s preseason basketball!

  • kh

why do players waste so much mental energy on whether or not they start? Really? Deflate your ego and play when you’re asked to.

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

Hard to deflate an ego that’s been fed NBA All-Star dreams since elementary school.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Tyrus has nice talent, but Taj Gibson actually understands basketball. And man, the Bulls need to find a lot of time for Kurt Hinrich. I’ve been a fan of him since he came into the league, and I’m glad to see him finally recovered from those injuries a few years back. That dude is a good player.

Ease up, Stromile 3000. Maybe you’ll play better in your fourth rookie season.

  • DW24

Kirk* sorry I’m a die hard KU fan and that bothered me.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Allenp: Now if only someone could get Kirk to stop missing so many easy layups underneath the basket.

What do you think about Noah?
I liked his aggressiveness and his newfound intelligence when putting hte ball on the floor and making decisions. I still don’t like his funky shooting motion, but he seems to making quality choices on the floor now, and he’s always played with energy. I think he could average a double/double with the proper touches, what about you?
And what’s the deal with Deng? He was really playing selfish. Jacking tough contested shots and what not. I don’t remember him having a rep for being a selfish player before the injuries.
    Thanks for the correction.

Seriously, Tyrus? Seriously? Come on, now….And yeah, Taj Gibson had been turning some heads…

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I think his starting spot is VERY questionable based on what he contributed to the team last season and what he did throughout camp. As Simmon likes to say, Ty Thomas is one of those ”tremendous upside potential” guy. We’ll be talking about how he COULD dominate the league well into his late 20s/early 30s. This is not tracks, Taj Gibson knows how to play basketball and actually understands defensive principles. That’s also why Noah is playing even though he has less raw skills than Thomas: he actually has a freaking clue of what’s going on on the court.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Allenp: the deal is trying to live up to his contract and the hype that he had prior to the injury. i mean the kobster was talkign about deng as a dealbreaker to him joining the bulls two years ago! expectations got out of hand. deng doesn’t have the skillset to dominate a basketball game but he will try and it’s not gonna be pretty.

I think maybe we don’t judge Luol on preseason performances when he hasn’t played in a real NBA game in six months. But that’s just me.

  • knock knock

Can we call this guy a bust yet?? He hasn’t had a consistent season since he’s been in the league, and i highly doubt he ever will. Watching his game in college, how the heck was he a top 4 draft pick??

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

He should just be happy they didn’t draft DeJuan Blair.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

i don’t know if i believe in blair just yet. he crushed the pre-season but pops didn’t give any guarantee that he would be in the reg season rotation. he is the 3rd pf after bonner and mcdyess and can not be slotter at the 5 in the nba.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I don’t know whether I believe in Blair just yet either, but I’d take him at power forward over Tyrus Thomas. He’d get minutes in the Chi.

  • Candice

@Russ did you see the the report on Rose today? Looks like he won’t be playing to Regular season. He said he was sore running around form practice. He say’s he wants to play but the doctors are saying no.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I’m cool with Rose missing a little bit of time at the beginning of the season to make sure he’s 100 percent. I’d rather have him sit out a week than battle the same issues all season long because he came back too quickly.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I wasn’t commenting on Deng’s skill set, more on his mindset. I remember one ridiculous jumper in particular that had Hinrich pissed off and shaking his head. That team has decent talent, they can compete for a playoff spot again if they play smart. We all know Salmons is a chucker, but at least he gets to the rack a lot. Deng was chucking jumpers, and it seemed like he was playing the role of ball stopper.
It is the preseason, so this might just be an anomaly, but I don’t know.

  • jontel

yall comin down on ty to hard lets remember he still is a raw player that came in at 19 trade him now your gonna miss his energy like the bulls did with chandler

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

bulls missed chandlers energy?….like fun they did.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

As far as Luol, I didn’t necessarily mind him being aggressive last night, especially being matched up 1-on-1 with Vince Carter. Basketball players typically when guarding an offensive threat like Vince, will try to match their intensity on the offensive end. But as Russ said, it’s only preseason so we shouldn’t read to much into that performance although I liked it. As far as Noah, I’d prefer if he stayed active on the offensive and defensive glass and get second chance points off easy put backs and tip dunks and not shoot that God-awful jumper. He could average a double-double just doing that.

  • BostonBaller

Players that complain/talk about starting can disrupt a team faster than a cheerleader. lol. Thomas is a decent player but Taj may be better. Moah is high energy and productive enough and as long as he stays withing the frame work he is an asset. For the sake of Bulls fans, hopefully Deng is just trying to shoot himself into a bball frame of mind, I think he will be fine. As far as Rose goes, he should sit as long as needed and come back 100%. (The Chi better hope he doesn’t miss too many games, it could be the difference in palayoff seeding)

  • KansasCity-OmahaKings

Ay you TT let’s see what Gibby can do before you start trippn thats what i would do if i were Tyrus.Thomas was the 4th overall pick and only averages 7.7 ppg for his career(compared to Chris bosh TT24 sucks)let Del Negro do his job TT24

  • Teddy-the-Bear

DeJuan Blair is going to be an All-Star one day, playing and learning under Tim Duncan.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

at this point I’d start james johnson over this scrub, never mind taj gibson

  • http://none The Philosopher

A lot of these young men have agendas, and sometimes some players feel like they are intitled to the “life”. I believe if Thomas was that good, it would not be any question why he is or is not starting.

  • http://Www.facebook.com Joe_king

Tyrus has had long enough to prove himself and doesnt look like hes gonna get to all star status
