Breaking: Nets Fire Lawrence Frank

by Lang Whitaker

In a move that surprises, well, nobody, the Nets have fired Lawrence Frank, effective immediately. The Nets, currently a robust 0-16, are in Los Angeles and play the Lakers tonight. Assistant coach Tom Barisse will coach the Nets tonight, and a successor to Frank has not been named.

If they lose to the Lakers, the Nets will tie the Miami Heat in 1988 and the Clippers in 1999 as the only teams to start a season 0-17.

No team has ever started a season 0-18. If (ha ha) the Nets lose to the Lakers tonight, their next game is at home against Dallas on Wednesday.

    Good Coach/Bad Team

  • NDP

Nice that they spared him ownership of coaching the record-tying loss?

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

They should let Hova coach. Coach Shawn Carter!

  • http://slam Liam Duignan

y would they fire him when it’s clearly the players that are losing the game for them

  • t141

    well it’s about time

  • BostonBaller

It’s much easier to get rid of a coach than a bunch of players who aren’t producing. Look at the teams that lose EVERY year and there are multiple coaching changes there. More than likely it’s the GM or whomever picks the players then the players who are at more fault for losing. IMO

  • BC24

I would have fired Frank after the Nets get there first win haha

  • Michael Scorn

He obviously forgot how to coach basketball all of a sudden this season. Like NDP said, 0-18 won’t be on his resume’.

It’s really too bad it has to be this way. It’s not Frank’s fault, he’s not the one playing the games. In my opinion they could have tried something else since I think Frank is a good coach on a bad team.

  • Jas

I’m sure coaches are lining up to take the reigns of that team.

Is this Mr. Barisse’s first game as a head coach? Nice initiation.

  • haaaaaaah

they shouldnt have traded half man/half amazing
cause now they(the nets)have 15 men that are not amazing
    the record shows.

This is not Lawrence Frank’s fault. I mean, if he would’ve coached the celtics, he’d do a good job, just like Doc. He just didn’t have the players. If you have to start Trenton Hassel, a player barely playing if everybody’s healthy, than nothing can be your fault.

That said; get ready for a new record. I even think they will set a higher that 0-18. 0-20? That hire Pat Riley and make it 61-20 ;) Now THAT would be a comeback.

    Avery Johnson?

  • la huey

interesting how you can be a horrible GM and stay employed much longer than a decent coach.

  • http://www.behindtheback.webeden.co.uk Sam Raphael Chadwick

Its a shame the GM’s and Owners dont realise its not his fault that so many of his players were injured or ill at the beginning of the season added to the fact that the nets were expected to be the worst team in the east anyway doesnt really help, I think they should have given him a bit longer but then again as people above have said it saves him having 18 losses maybe more on his c.v

  • Shem

Terrible move, he s a great coach and has good situational plays (id know because im a raps fan and we play them 4 times a year).

  • Michael Scorn

Of course, once they finally win a game the GM will say “See, see, I told you once we fired him we would win!”

  • Michael Scorn

It seems like Thanksgiving is the most popular time to fire an NBA coach.

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

Is the headline “Breaking: Nets Fire Frank Lawrence” suppose to be sarcastic? Becuase the Net’s firing their coach isn’t really breaking news

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

    Meh. Saw it coming.

  • nastierthanu

Why is everyone saying this guy is nice with his x’s and o’s. His best season was the year byron scott was fired and they have been on a downhill slide since then. Conf semi’s and its a wrap last 2 seasons they haven’t made the playoff and it aint gonna happen this year. He’s a young guy and he ll have many opportunities in the l but he needed to go. Get his butt outta the swamp. He’s lucky property taxes are ridiculous anyway.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Leon Sanchez will lead NJ to the playoffs if they hire him. Plus Leon and Jay-Z would put out mixtapes and convince Lebron to come to the swamp. HIRE LEON NEW JERSEY IM TALKIn TO YOU. (Leon Sanchez in this case is Byron Scott)

ima bout to hijack this thread like its a police car in GTA San Andres…..NOT (like this suit being black)

  • Danny W UK

Love to see the odds for tonight, $10 say the Nets beat the Lakers.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

    Paul Silas…Paul Silas…Paul Silas…

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Danny: they wont beat them, but i would bet $10 they will actually put effort in.

  • llama

lol, kinda mean, but i was kinda happy when SAC beat them last night…everyone loves a record broken :P btw, who saw KG beastin’ against miami tonight?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

B Long: is too old…is too old…is too old

  • I am the walrus

They should have fired the players…

  • Jacob (from Australia)

The real unfortunate soul in this whole Nets mess is Brook Lopez. Dude is playing like the best centre in the L and they still get spanked every game. He better make the All-Star Game, I don’t care how crap his team is.

  • http://Slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, James the Baller. As for Frank, well, this should have happened three seasons ago in my opinion. Nice guy, good student of the game, but when did he ever do anything that shows “good NBA coach”?

  • llama

    0-17…hell yah!!!

  • T Money

Well said, Ben. He should have been fired when the Nets couldn’t get out of the 1st round with 2 HOFers and another all star level player.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

“Brook Lopez. Dude is playing like the best centre in the L”
It IS a crap time for centres, isn’t it? I was spoiled, coming into NBA ball with Robinson, Olajuwon, Ewing, even Doughtery, then a couple years later Shaq, Mourning and Duncan. *sigh*

  • underdog

Well, no surprise here, and the Nats organisation had to do something. I blame the injuries for this record, not Coach Frank.

  • Jacob (from Australia)

Yeah I admit there isn’t much competition in terms of big post guys anymore, it’s a real shame.
When Shaq said “Me and Zydrunas Ilgauskas are the best centre in the game.”, I had to think… He’s barely even lying!
I guess you can’t teach height but it seems you can’t teach those with the height to actually play decent ball.

  • ab_40

wins of no wins I think his time in new jersey was up anyway. but he’s a young coach and he’ll get another team. he’s a good Xs n Os guy. maybe mike brown should give him a call since he can’t write up ish in crunch time.

  • Ramon R7O

IT WAS ABOUT TIME, EVERY SINCE HE GOT THERE HE DIDN’T DO ANYTHING FOR THE NETS
I HOPE THEY GET BRIAN SCOTT BACK!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Can’t they just fire the entire organisation until next season?

  • riggs

are yall freaking kidding me? lawrence frank is NOT a good coach, and its definately his fault. its been his fault ever since the year AFTER they took over. you ever wondered why byron scott had them going to the finals and then after he leaves his former assistant coach (frank) uses his playbook and work ethic and they go back to the finals? from there on they started going downhill AFTER he started using his own style. as a former nets fan im surprised people are defending frank for being fired, its been a long time coming.
