Donnie Walsh on Jennings: My Bad

The Knicks’ boss agrees with the rest of the universe that he screwed up the Brandon Jennings draft pick in spectacular fashion, and Brandon still can’t believe he didn’t end up in NY: “Knicks president Donnie Walsh made a damning statement Friday, saying he didn’t ‘have a good enough feel’ for Jennings’ game. Jennings leapt from high school to Italy last season. ‘I thought I showed them enough in the workout on one-on-one drills, beating everyone else up and down the court, playing defense,’ Jennings said. ‘I thought me and D’Antoni would have a good relationship, speak a little Italian together and go to Italian restaurants. I seen what he did for Steve Nash.’”

The Knicks can pay all these crappy players but couldn’t properly scout the perfect player for their (dumb) system? Give me a break.

  • German Reignman Posted: Nov.9 at 10:13 am
*sings* its up to you New York, New Yoooooork !

  • underdog Posted: Nov.9 at 10:16 am
It’s hard to belive, the Knicks front office is also able to make mistakes. I still think, though that Thabeet is going to be the biggest bust, not Jordan Hill.

  • niQ Posted: Nov.9 at 10:22 am
Yea. I been saying it since the draft but, what a stupid draft pick. They wanted a point guarded in a point guard heavy draft and did NOT select a point guard. And now Jennings is playing like a Rookie of the Year candidate.

  • cramzy Posted: Nov.9 at 10:24 am
I with you Ben.How do you chase Ramon Sessions or Chris Duhon the year before, but can’t get a good “feel” for Jennings. It’s all hindsight of course, but come on son!

  • cramzy Posted: Nov.9 at 10:25 am
    *I’m*

  • Brad Long Posted: Nov.9 at 10:53 am
    Jordan Hill=Donnie Walsh’s Renardo Balkman.

  • George Posted: Nov.9 at 11:07 am
So in this scenario, Jennings is Furio to to D’Antoni’s Carmela Soprano? And Donnie is obviously Tony. It’s heartbreaking really.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.9 at 11:08 am
Is Jordan Hill even getting burn? I think Jennings may make a few teams look foolish, not just the Knicks.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.9 at 11:14 am
    Co-sign B. Osborne.
Donnie FINALLY realizes he passed on the Rookie of the Year… At least he admits it. That’s classier than Isiah. This years draft was worse than last years–at least Danilo Gallinari can SORT OF play. Although D’Antoni/Walsh have no excuse for passing on Eric Gordon…
And now Brandon Jennings will go back to playing really, really well and make Knick fans cringe every time we hear about how really, really well he plays. Maybe they’ll trade for him???

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.9 at 11:16 am
What’s almost as bad is, they pass on Ramon Sessions, Sun Yue, and Gabe Pruit–THREE POINT GUARDS right after! Oh and the rumors about Walsh trying to get Rubio are a joke.
Brandon Jennings > Rubio all day.

  • 360vue Posted: Nov.9 at 11:22 am
meh… he admitted his mistake so what? pretty blatant anyway. the important thing is he learns from it, which i severely doubt! since knicks are singlehandedly the worst franchise of the noughties; so much potential frittered away over the whims of idiotic management. jennings for roy

  • lil kobe Posted: Nov.9 at 11:43 am
they just passed on the next best thing to iverson

  • Samcobilibob Posted: Nov.9 at 11:44 am
Jennings is about to torch the entire NBA, and my Knicks are left in the dust.

  • lil kobe Posted: Nov.9 at 11:44 am
    brandon jennings = Iverson

In the system that D’Antoni likes (one that clearly isn’t working with this half-baked, comical Knicks team) Jennings would average 12-13 dimes a game. He would have been a glove-fit for D’Antoni’s style. All these guys that love to shoot–Al Harrington, Gallo, etc. would get theirs on a nightly basis and D. Lee wouldn’t dip below 20 points. Instead,NYK got Jordan Hill, who couldn’t play dead in a horror movie. The guy is supposed to bring a defensive prowess, let’s see how (and if) he pans out. It’s funny how this Knick team likes laughing and joking around after surrendering 40 points in the first quarter to dreadful teams. Then, after the game, it’s still all smiles. You think Starks, Oakley, Ewing, Mase, and the rest of that football-basketball team of the 90s would be cool after a loss? This team is heading to the gutter fast.

Imagine Eric Gordon and Brandon Jennings in the same backcourt. The Knicks have failed once again.

  • Z Posted: Nov.9 at 12:01 pm
Don’t get it. Brandon Jennings is an uptempo pg that played in Italy. The coach is a former uptempo pg that played in Italy as well. They have a glaring need at the pg spot. They have a decent PF that hustles and boards. They drafted a PF that hustles and boards. / THEY HAVE THE WORST STARTING PG IN THE LEAGUE! How many teams would start Duhon right now other than the Knicks? For the life of I can’t think of one.

  • Z Posted: Nov.9 at 12:03 pm
Jennings is NOTHING like AI. He’s a very willing passer and actually looks to set his teammates up before getting his. True PG.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.9 at 12:13 pm
With the fact that D’Antoni played and coached overseas, i’m no sure how Walsh didn’t have a “good enough feel” for Brandon’s game? I mean all you had to do was walk down the hallway and knock on Mike’s door.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.9 at 12:25 pm
    ***knock, knock***
    Walsh: “Hey Mike, you busy?”
D’Antoni: “Huh…what? Oh, hey Donnie. No, not busy. Let me just stop this tape of Danilo.”
Walsh: “So Mike, how do you feel about us drafting Brandon Jennings? Any chance you can make a phone call to your old team and see what they think?”
D’Antoni: “Um…I think Sarver has blocked my number.”
Walsh: “Not that team, Mike. Your old Euro team.”
D’Antoni: “Ummm…yeah, sure…sure. Hey, have you seen anything sweeter than Gallinari’s shooting stroke? He should have JJ’s contract with Better Shooting.”
Walsh: “Yeah, he is progressing nicely. How did Brandon look when we brought him in?”
    D’Antoni: “Skinny.”
Walsh: “OK, but how did his game look?”
D’Antoni: “Um, compared to Danilo’s jumper? Not too bad, I suppose.”
Walsh: “Thanks Mike. Jordan Hill it is.”

  • niQ Posted: Nov.9 at 12:30 pm
@Z. Although I want to believe you on that. The stats don’t help you there (Other than the first game where he got 9 assists). He’s been getting like 3 assists a game… after that first game..

  • Saku 39 Posted: Nov.9 at 12:32 pm
I would have rather have had Jennings but I think Hill will be solid. By the way - Tyreke Evans will be ROY.

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.9 at 12:33 pm
Sadly the knicks are doomed to be inept forever. If they had gordon and jennings they could actually entice bron to play with those two and david lee. Idiots.

  • Shem Posted: Nov.9 at 12:48 pm
The knicks passed on players like: Rajon Rondo, Danny Granger, Andrew Bynum, Brandon Jennings, Eric Gordon. The knicks traded: Jamal Crawford, Zach Randolph, Quinton Richardson, the 2006 draft pick for Eddy Curry and Antonio Daniels. That pick was the SECOND overall pick. They could have drafted Brandon Roy, Lamarcus Aldridge. Then at the 29th pick they drafted mardy collins over paul millsap, daniel gibson etc. LET ME TELL YOU WHAT THE KNICKS LINEUP COULD LOOK LIKE:
    Rajon Rondo
    Brandon Roy
    Al Thornton
    Zach Randolph
    Andrew Bynum
Bench: Jamal Crawford, Brandon Jennings, Chris Duhon, Nate robinson, David Lee, Al Harrington, Quinton Richardon etc.
The knicks are actually the worst management in sports the only thing they can do is pay stephon marbury 20 mill and eddy curry 11 mill.

  • Shem Posted: Nov.9 at 12:49 pm
I forgot to mention small forwards up there, Trevor Ariza and Wilson Chandler would also be put in the mix

  • Shem Posted: Nov.9 at 12:50 pm
Actually Danny Granger could be starting at sf with wilson chandler and Trevor Ariza and Al Thornton coming off the bench

  • riggs Posted: Nov.9 at 12:55 pm
    jordan hill sucks.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.9 at 2:13 pm
Are we really giving up on Jordan Hill after 20 total minutes of playing time? Really?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.9 at 2:53 pm
Jordan Hill over Brandon Jennings is nothing compared to taking Nene ahead of Amarâ„¢e, then trading his rights AND Marcus Camby for Antonio McDyess.

  • Heals Posted: Nov.9 at 3:05 pm
    Next-Jen keeps on impressing…

  • Seven Duece Posted: Nov.9 at 3:31 pm
I said all summer that Brandon Jennings was going to come in and sh*t on people and everybody kept calling him a punk with a big mouth. NOW folks are jumping on the bandwagon. I’m as big of an Arizona Wildcats fan as there is and I NEVER thought Jordan Hill would be more than a nice role player. Taking a guy who probably make an All Star game in the first 5 picks is stupid (just as Atlanta).

  • Seven Duece Posted: Nov.9 at 3:39 pm
*Taking a guy who probably WON’T make an All Star game, in the first 5 picks is stupid (just ask Atlanta)*

  • K Posted: Nov.9 at 3:42 pm
Jordan Hill may end up being a very good player. However, if you are going to pass up on Jennings, a player who perfectly fills your primary need, then Jordan Hill better end up up a perennial all-star (not looking too likely).

  • nbk Posted: Nov.9 at 4:27 pm
I wonder how Hill feels about his current GM admitting that picking him was a mistake….. and if your going to try and get the best player available in this summers FA bonanza then why would you admit to faults while building your roster? Admitting he made a mistake might be the biggest mistake of all

  • nbk Posted: Nov.9 at 4:31 pm
Donnie Walsh should have said, we picked Jordan Hill over Jennings because we saw the opportunity to shore up our interior defense for the future. Hill will be a great compliment to any star we add in the future.

I gave up on Hill at Zona. It’s never a good sign when you can watch a whole half of college ball without noticing a big.

  • Lee Posted: Nov.9 at 7:22 pm
What we SHOULD be talking about is how the Bucks are most likely going to trade Brandon Jennings for Keith Van Horn and a couple of tickets to the Miller Brewery tour.

  • Daniel Posted: Nov.9 at 7:31 pm
    go Nuggets!

  • LeoneL Posted: Nov.9 at 8:53 pm
Jennings, Eric Gordon, Wilson Chandler, Gallo, David Lee… That’s 5 guys capable of 20 per game. And with Jennings showing he can dish that ball, I don’t think they’d have a problem of someone taking too little or too much shot. I’m still a Knicks fan though. :D

yea lets not talk about this anymore very depressing

  • Mavus Posted: Nov.10 at 2:19 am
It’s simple… you have an up-tempo team with a slow PG.. you blew it big time.. you could have got Lawson or Jennings for the future.. Until the get a PG that can push the tempo and dish the ball, they are going to stink..

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.10 at 9:07 am
Atleast he’s admitted to his erroneous ways…*singing* I DID IT MYYYYY WAAYYYY!!

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.10 at 9:08 am
Note the suns run to start the season?

  • shadysider Posted: Nov.10 at 11:00 am
The Knicks bitched out or management was scared of the previous rumors. They did their scouting and thought Jennings was too risky. You’re the Knicks! Risk is neccessary at this point. What did they have to lose?

  • Mr Barrio Posted: Nov.13 at 2:26 pm
Brandon Jennings is the FUTURE of the PG position. He can score at will he has great quickness and speed and his basketball IQ is very high. And only 6 games into the season on top of him being the top nod for R.O.Y his team is WINNING. They are WINNING and playing very competitvely and mind you there roster isnt stacked and their “STAR” is hurt(but again its very early)I see him continuing to progress and get better being (in my eyes) he is a pass first PG in its purest form. The Knicks will continue to fail in all facets of the game from on the floor to the board room. And there isnt ONE Knick player I would keep who is on the current roster. I’d trade the whole team for Jennings and wait for 2011 when Lebron will be a free agent (again). MARK MY WORDS…. “BRON BRON” signs a ONE year MAX MAX deal with Cleveland for like 30 mill for the year. And the saga continues….
