Is This Really the End for AI?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

For now, the only two people who seem absolutely certain that this is the end of Allen Iverson’s career, are A.I. himself and his personal manager, Gary Moore. Everyone else is still in a bit of shock, and waiting (some hoping) to see if The Answer eventually changes his mind.

Taking a read through Iverson’s official statement regarding the retirement, one can’t help but get the feeling that even he’s not totally convinced this is the end:

I would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association. I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn’t help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case.

I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play, and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.

That doesn’t sound like a guy who’s ready to hang up his Reeboks forever. If anything, it sounds like a man without a country, so to speak.

Players around the League expressed sadness to see him leave the game like this, and his former coach Larry Brown says he plans to contact Allen about the decision and attempt to talk him out of it.

For the time being anyway, it’s time to say goodbye to one of the most amazing players to ever play in the NBA. He did it his way — and though he didn’t always do it the “right way” (which may have ultimately pushed him out of the League) — you have to respect him for that.

Thanks for the memories, A.I. Here’s to many more down the line.

“Applaud Iverson for his usual honesty, if you wish, but be advised that basketball historians will make a very clear distinction between gamer and winner when it’s time to write A.I.’s legacy.

For all his unique offensive gifts as a little guard, coupled with an unmatched ability to absorb punishment, Iverson consistently put his own agenda ahead of his team’s. The only truly successful Iverson team — Philadelphia’s NBA Finals team in 2000-01 — was built on the premise that A.I. would take all the shots and the other four guys on the floor would cover him on D and chase down all the misses. In short: Iverson has always wanted to play more than he wanted to win………Forget, for a moment, that pretty much no one who follows this sport thinks he’s serious about staying away if the phone rings. Let’s try to ignore the fact that Iverson’s retirement statement, as one of my editors cracked, reads more like a job application than a farewell, with claims that there’s “a whole lot left in my tank” and Iverson’s strong belief that he “can still compete at the highest level.” MARC STEIN

@FoCO read what I said, I didn’t say you thought yourself flawless, I said, that as we are human, almost every one of us are flawed, and yet you are bashing the man like he is a murderer or rapist. get a sense of perspective. Oh and the practice thing is soooooo exaggerated, the vast majority he turned up for, and when the coach kicked up a fuss, AI responded with the now legendary lines… so if thats you’re basis for him disregardign his team, stop posting on this matter! As a sixers fan, I have seen this guy in probably what is nearing 500 games, I know this guy is selfless for his team, even if his professional attitude sucks, so honestly please don’t comment on stuff you have evidently little knowledge on. Your comments seem based predominantly on dislike for the man rather than actual knowledge of the man. Oh and a blind, one legged AI is better than Conley, Conley, right now, sucks, hes got potential but so what? Grizz have two probable future all stars they should worry about grooming, but keeping them should be first priority, and giving AI adequate minutes would have given them a far greater number of wins than they will manage without him. Who wants to be a team that can’t manage a respectable team? Certainly not future All stars

  • ciroqobama

@360vue: We get it… Easy with the caplocks dork.

  • FoCo

@360vue I think you said with regards to him coming back to Philly you’d rather see him play somewhere else because you want to develop your young guys. Isn’t that what Memphis is being bashed upon for doing? As a Nuggets fan I’ve seen AI in a few games myself…and they were entertaining games. Most of them were victories too…but I also know I saw with my own eyes Iverson taking to many shots and failing to lead my favorite team past the first round. I remember the day the trade with Philly happened. My dad asked me how happy I was that we got AI (heck I still remember going to see AI come to town with the Sixers one year on my birthday…beat the Nuggets…but I caught a free t-shirt) and I told him that I wasn’t and that I loved to watch the guy play but only if it was on someone else’s team. I’ll admit my view is also partially clouded by the fact the the Nuggets gave up Dre to get him. This is not a statement related in any way to the talent between the two but I loved Dre as a Nugget and really that whole team. Finally I have never questioned AI’s talent. I fully admit that the man is an amazing basketball player. I just can’t get past the fact that neither he nor anybody on his side can seem to admit that this is potentially his fault whats happening here and that he needs an attitude adjustment. See this quote from his manager ““It’s no secret that Allen has been unfairly treated through all this.”

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@FoCo Your Nugs hadn’t got past first without him, so thats another major flaw in your argument. Another fact, AI always takes lots of shots, not too many, Carmelo’s play improved with him. Also, his shooting averages were the best they had ever been. I can’t see how you can complain that he leads you to victory on his own back, but he takes too many shots? Don’t be so fussy. Another issue, don’t try degrade what I stated about Sixers needing to progress…. Conley sucks, Williams is way better even if he isnt even close to being a true point. And considering we have had this rebuilding vibe going on since AI left, many years ago, it would seem foolish that we take him back. Whereas, Grizz aren’t rebuilding, they never had anything to rebuild, they need to keep their talent, and having awful season after awful season isnt going to do that. So yes, there is no hypocrisy in me saying Grizz should of played him, whilst us Sixers should focus on developing what we have… One more thing, ” this is potentially his fault whats happening here” you can’t even say with castiron certainty that it is, because you don’t. His attitude as professional is lamentable and ideally should be improved, however, if you can’t see he get the rough end of the stick for the last couple of years then you undeniably have a dislike for this man that blinds you. His manager is right, he has been untreated unfairly, his attitude as poor as it can be doesn’t warrant how he had been handled in Motown or in Memphis

  • FoCo

@360vue But I will say with certainty that its his fault. I’m attacking the people in AI’s corner who won’t even look at the possibility out of the corner of their eyes. Any possibility that Melo improved with AI in town simply because he was a young player maturing as he got older and spent more time playing at an NBA level? Who is to say they wouldn’t have kept improving and gotten to the next level without Iverson? Maybe it was going to take another guy, a next level leader and teammate who had been to the mountaintop before like Chauncey but AI wasn’t that guy for the Nuggets and ultimately didn’t pan out. Not saying he hasn’t had a hard time this past year but I do believe that he has contributed greatly to that and didn’t give himself a chance to succeed in Memphis even if the cards were stacked against him in Detroit. Anyway its time for family business…Happy Thanksgiving to you all

Orlando, DJ is having a sophmore slump. Last year i believed DJ would be better than Felton. Most people agreed with me. This year, DJ is sucking and their is really no reason for it. Had DJ kept on improving, i would have favored trading Felton, but Dj haa gotten worse (not sure why) and needs to go if we want to win now. Throughout his career Acie Law is consistant, while DJ isnt. Acie just hasnt been given a chance. He is a Larry Brown player (big, strong point guard) so i think he will do better in Larry’s system and has more star potential within it then DJ does.

AI should go to cavs. Cavs have d.west(who rarely plays), coby karl(has he even played a game yet), and AP. AP is good and all, but he can’t play over 30 mins a night and is not clutch(im a raps fan, i know what im talking about). AI and AP could split time(AP when defense is needed, AI when offense is needed). AI would start, also, think about how good their bench would be, also, how about big z for david west. now think about this cavs team:
    Starters:
Mo williams, AI, LeBron, David West, Shaq
Daniel Gibson, AP, J.Moon, JJ Hickson, A. Varejao
Also, Leon Powe would be back in january or february to help in the playoffs and end of season.

Kids these days…Why is it so hard for so many people to realize that being talented/individualist/interesting/driven means you get to do whatever you want? Personally I think it’s great that no one wants to pick up AI. Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t – and the number of teams who want to deal with a man-child who thinks he’s the Center of the Universe is ZERO. No one is saying that AI isn’t a great player. Talent-wise I’d probably put him down as the second or third most naturally gifted player ALL TIME. Doesn’t that tell you something? Too many people been raised to think that the world owes them something because of who they are, what they are, or what they did, and that’s a lie. Talent can make you rich and famous, but lacking in character and perspective makes for a lot of flashy losers who think they’re somebody special. No disrespect to AI, but much disrespect to people who think they can do whatever they want without consequence.

Ummmmm, no Joel O. Just no. You don’t think he could help the freaking Knicks by leading them and playing crunchtime minutes? You don’t think he could benefit the Grizzlies by getting 25 and 5? Don’t tell me you’re serious.

  • http://myspace.com/rsaenz24 RoG23

This dude is too immature. He only wants to do things his way. Not do things that are best for him and his team, but HIS way. Come on now, he is definately one of the greatest talents, but a great player is more than just talent. A great player is one who is successful and is willing to make any sacrfice necessary to better his team. Ala garnett, duncan, artest, even shaq !!! If shaq can put his ego aside, why can’t ai?????

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Kenny Smith summed it up on nba tv last night these guys know the truth AI CAN GET 25 in his sleep but players are scared of him because of his entourage and his style.

  • tavoris

Pardeep, that’s not that he said. He said teams are scared because of that they’ve HEARD about an entourage. If you listen to his use of tone, u realize what he was REALLY trying to say (there isn’t one anymore)

  • k.dot.b.dot

I find the whole situation kinda sad, same way I find the Starbury situation sad as well. First off my opinion is only my opinion and I dont state anything here as fact, more perception. I am not going to say I know anything about the real AI since I do not. I used to be a HUGE AI fan, up until after the 2001 season. From that point onwards he has disappointed me in many ways, his last 2 years being the epitome of everything I hate in prof. athletes. I wont deny that the guy is a hell of a bballer and has a heart of a lion. However you also have to question his true motives when he behaves the way he has over the last 2 seasons.
I can only go with the evidence I have at hand, since I am not privy to the back-door goings on of the NBA and I think the media has a bit of a hate on when it comes to AI. So with that, I look at the aftermath of Iverson leaving a team and what I see (or perceive) is that they look much happier. I know Philly aint no contender right now, but other than when they got to the finals, they weren’t doing a whole lot either. The Nuggets definitely got better, Detroit at least are playing cohesively again with what they have and with Memphis he wasn’t there long enough, even though I swear I saw quotes of him saying that he was looking forward to playing with a young team and competing for a spot.
On the flip though I have to say I think there are plenty other players who would also have a problem with not starting. Iverson though through being out-spoken has become a media poster-child for the “spoiled thug NBA athlete” and for those with a racist heart it goes a level deeper. Regardless AI will go down as a beast of a baller, but will he be remembered as a true winner? I dont think so, he’ll be remembered in the same light as ‘Nique is.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

even if there was an entourage who cares lol hes there to play basketball and Eric Snow and Kenny both know AI can drop 25 in his sleep.

  • http://slam Liam Duignan

Hey Iverson if you here me my highschool team will take you. You’ll have to come of the bench though hahaha

  • http://www.okiboy.net Okitech623

After AI was officially released from the Grizz more came out about what really went down initially. The team, in their big meeting with AI in the ATL where they sealed the deal, told AI that he would be coming off the bench initially but would be given a chance to COMPETE for the starting job. He accepted this knowing that as of right then it was his only chance to keep playing ball in the L. He got hurt in the preseason before any games were played and missed the first couple of regular season games. How could anybody in their right mind who’s played no games preseason or otherwise and barely practiced with his new team expect to start for one and two play significant minutes IN HIS FIRST GAME BACK FROM AN INJURY! Dude is a busta. Mad talented. Huge heart. Yadda, yadda, yadda. But he’s still a busta. My Grizz are better off without him. 4 and 1 since he left. Finally gelling and playing like a team . If he had stayed it would have been AI (and those other Grizzlies) vs. everybody else. So what if he could/would have dropped 25+ a night. Would that have made the TEAM better? I don’t think so. All it would have done is make his ego bigger while our young talent (Mayo, Gay, Gasol, etc.) wasted away and picked up bad habits. Is AI better that Conley? Yep. Conley can’t even tie AI’s shoelaces but he was brought in to a)put butts in the seats b)mentor the young talent and help them become better ball players. He knew that going in but got mad when the team actually did what they said they were going to do. And when they didn’t cave in to his tantrum he quit. Good riddance.

  • Donn

Louis Williams out for 6-8 weeks…hmm…c’mon philly just sign AI already…i’ve seen the crowds at your arena and man, are they sparse…i mean, even the memphis grizzlies laugh at your attendance figures…bring the Answer back and the crowds will come back..i think…really, what do you have to lose?

  • http://slamonline.com samuel harrison

i herd today that the famous number 3 has retired? no way i mean i cant say i was suprised because the way things have ben going, but wait the same hungry allen iverson who crossed jordan his rookie year and became the symbol of heart and struggle and passion for philly? wow i mean so stoked when he played his first game , because it was supposed to be his rebirth as a player, lol ha and he came out and in my eyes was the best player out ther and seemed to score like classic A i .i mean that killer instink, that ruthless and raw skill , where, if you love him or hate hime ,all you can do is just sit back and say wow , clean, fast, easy, these are words i here when i watch him. He has will probably always be my favorit player , never seen a guy do the same moves the greats were doing , but like a whole lot faster ,i mean he won a champion ship game in highschool football and baskettball in the same year…. uhh what! have we forgot allready , peaple and coaches in bethal high school now say before ther was a michael vick, there was a alllen iverson… amazing punt return artist, and QB, he was unbelievable to watch as i chiled , ide like to call it god gifted, chiled protagy.speed of a jaguare and living in philly naturaly he had the eye of the tiger.i mean me being a baller myself i relate to hime a 100 percent, its not easy out here. it so easy to get cought up in everything out there …he has had his struggles and unlike every clean cut nba player , he was not ashamed to be real ,and hide these things that made him who he was, he was proud of his life and his tatoos they represted his journey in life and how he got out of a poverty. he is a voise to all the great street ball kids i philly and across the world , because he was the first one to stand up and say I AM… im here and you like the world cant stop me he put it all on the line and has nuthing to be ashamed of ,thank you allen for all the great moments , and nights on you tube where i can watch you amaze me yet again. as i come to my end ide just like to say dont let the tatoos the corn rows and gangster attitud daceive you , ARTIST thats what he was, like a roy jones jr , floyd mayweather, a talent that comes in once in a life time,i told myself it was always my dream to see allen iverson play one time in my life!!! when he got to memphis i bought a ticket to san antonio, spurs vs grizz sumtime in months to come, and they were right behind the grizzlies bench haha , never got to see him play, but still remember the lakers sixers game 1 champion ship when allen crossed that dude on the side lines, and then with hits the shot and steps over the guy. as to say i will not die today!!! i will love and miss you a i . hopefully you come back to us!!!! 1 last thing take this into consideration allen, jason kidd, jason williams , paul pierce ray allen , kobe bryant yeah i said it… these are guys not to long ago were out running and out hussiling, and with your heart and durable body you shoulked be out ther still showing off your pure skil.so many haters out there, but they dont understand the game or dont understand you….come back!!! i herd once that guarding you was like trying to hold water in the poum of your hand lol the answer is gone all we can do is sit back and remember….

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Great write up Samuel and I agree with all that and am going to be the first to say there will never be another Allen Iverson.

Anyone that is happy to see AI retire, or anyone that has used the word selfish or Marbury etc. Those people have nothing to offer this website. They are attention seeking, short-sighted and really lack all knowledge of the last fifteen years. Damn it, you people are truly f@cked in the head. I have no time for your point of view, you lack wisdom, taste, style and love for the game… I’m from New Zealand. MichaelNZ you said he was an icon but you’ve been hating a lot,… f#ck you dude… don’t give my country a whack ass pov, you should know better, if I knew who you were, I’d ask Sid to kick your ass. He’d say “Hmmm, sweet as Andy”. Who’s Sid? There is only one Sid in NZ… A.I, come back the game will never be the same. You’ll always be my favourite player.

  • Big Marv

Allen changed the game, he’s 6”. That’s small in the land of giants. He always kept it real. ‘We’ as black people saw ourselves, baggy jeans, cornrows, ghetto upbringing, all the good and all the bad, the I don’t give a fuc$%^& attidude. I will not change, I will not lose, the me against the world attitude. We could realy relate to him. We saw ourselves, instead of the always perfect, clean hero’s like Michael Jordan. Thanx Allen Iverson.

  • thomas

damn tripledouble you are a tough guy
this is exactly what people do not like about Allen Iverson. The fact that he cannot accept that others think differently… he has not been able to adapt to changes. Look at Kobe, who certainly has lost a step or two because of all that mileage on his legs; he used to be super athletic and could always rely on his quick first step and his vertical leap. but he has been able to adapt… this year he introduced us to a new post game that he is willing to utilize in order to keep efficient.
The same can be said about Jordan. I remember when he came back from retirement (baseball!) people where complaining that he’s not dunking the way he used to… all he did was using his fade away jumper and clever head fakes etc.
Or even Vince Carter… after Jumper’s knee gave him trouble for some time he became a very good jump shooter and threepoint shooter. In order to lengthen your career you have to adapt your game over time. And AI has never been able to do that.
And what I also don’t get is why people cannot accept that AI did wrong the last couple of months/ years. YES, he used to be one of the best players in the league who has been able to bring a mediocre team to the finals, but that was years ago… the last couple of years his resume looks pretty terrible… deal with it and if you don’t learn to accept other people’s oppinions my friend (TripleDouble again) you will have a hard time just like AI is having right now…
just my two cents though :)

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS

@TripleDouble….:i’ve never been to New Zealand but i got great memories from this country(!!!!). For example,by completely humiliating their team in last years Olympic qualifing tournament we made it to Beijing!!!! The final score of 88-63 doesn’t really describe what actually took place on the floor cause we put some young guys in the end but in the most part it was a dunk clinic with Antonis Fotsis performing a breathtaking follow jam !!!! They have a fat guy, Pero Cameron that is really hilarious, i always enjoy seeing him.!! By the way: they must be one of the dirtiest basketball teams in the face of this world along with Puerto Rico. I excuse NZ being dirty cause the got no talent at all, Puerto Rico is inexcusable….

Look, some of the Iverson love here is outrageous and lacking in actual substance, but this is AI’s retirement thread: it should be used to compliment the player, not bash him.
As I said, love him or hate him, respect that he had the skills, respect that he was always honest, and respect that -even if it was his own way- he tried to win.
And for chrissakes, Tavoris, 360, don’t turn this into an argument/debate. Just let the haters say what they want and let it rest. Christ.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

Jukai: Good point, but what bugs me is that he is choosing to go out in a sad way that highlights his attitude problems. I’d rather be celebrating his game, but it kind of sucks as a basketball fan (not a superstar fan) to watch such an amazing talent and warrior waste our time rooting for him to finally do right and come out on top. Instead he just got rich. Now he’s going to go out like a sucker by choice, when a million people with the same talent would keep fighting, even humbly, to win a chip. Thanks AI, for the…youtube videos.

on a more serious note: VON WAFER is officially in coaches Giannakis black-list since he plays 5 minutes on average and he usually makes mistake after mistake when he is on the floor…the thing is so sad that there are thoughts of leaving him out of the roster for Sundays big game against Euroleague perrenial champions Panathinaikos in favor of Patrick Beverley….i was a few weeks ago in a game of Olympiakos and everybody from the fans was trying to encourage Von (Olympiakos fans traditionally love showmen, from brazilian soccer players to bball artists like Roy Tarpley, Walter Berry, Zarko Paspalie, etc) but he was making travelling violations even on fast-breaks…..Josh seems to have adjusted though while Kleiza is clearly made to excel in European basketball.
