Iverson Will NOT Become a Knick

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

In the last week, all indications seemed to point to Allen Iverson becoming a New York Knickerbocker. Donnie Walsh was said to be on the verge of pulling the trigger on the deal … and then, nothing.

According to several reports this morning, the Knicks have decided not to pursue The Answer. Which means that Allen is still an unrestricted free agent, without a team.

The NY Times has the details:

In an abrupt reversal, Knicks officials decided late Thursday not to offer Iverson a contract, putting an end to their brief flirtation, according to a person close to the deliberations. Although team officials were highly intrigued by Iverson, a four-time scoring champion, they finally decided that he posed too great a risk because of his long history of problems on and off the court.

Team officials spent three days weighing the potential merits and pitfalls of signing Iverson, and alternately talked themselves into and then out of making the move … By Thursday afternoon it appeared that the Knicks were fully committed to taking the gamble, with one person close to the team saying there was a 90 percent chance that Iverson would become a Knick. But team officials held one more discussion on the matter Thursday evening and decided to drop it, according to the person close to the deliberations.

Man, if even the Knicks (a team that has a total of two wins so far this season, and one of the most dysfunctional sports franchises in recent history) think you’re too big of a gamble to take, it might be time to re-evaluate things.

The sad saga of Allen Iverson continues, with no happy ending in sight.

What about the cavaliers? Nevermind he would throw a little fit playing 2nd dog to lebron. This guy shouldn’t even be allowed to play basketball. All he cares about is stats. That’s it! I would rather have george hill off the bench than iverson starting!!!!!!!!! He USED to be my fav player. But he let down all his true basketball fans. Hope he justs retires.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

if he started on cleveland i don’t think he would have a problem. but his shooting ability will keep cleveland from entertaining that possibility. If you can’t shoot 3′s and you aren’t bronny or shaq you aren’t welcomed in cleveland

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I think he would fit best on Lakers since the ghost of Derek Fisher is starting. As well, man I just want to see a game between AI and Brandon Jennings.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i think milwaukee should sign him. just to see what happens (i don’t really feel that way but it would be somethin)

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Smart decision by the Knicks. Finally they wizen up.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@niQ: Hmmph… I don’t know if Allen would be a good fit on the Lakers. Derek Fisher has really lost his quickness, but he’s still adept at doing the things that he’s paid to do – physical defense and hitting big shots. Will AI be happy to play 20-30 minutes a game as a 3rd-at-best option jump shooter? When Fish inevitably moves to the bench, I think Brown takes his place.

  • http://Slamonline.com NUPE

I agree with NiQ, the Lakers could use him as an upgrade to Fish and Farmar. However, they would mis having the on-court leadership that Fish provides. Whoever picks him up should do it as an experiment and be willing to cut him loose before he can disrupt a good team. He didn’t do poorly co-existing with Carmelo and I think he could do well with Bron/Shaq. He was frustrated in Memphis both because he wasn’t starting and because they were not getting wins. If he doesn’t start, he may be willing to ‘fit in’ if he gets decent minutes and the team wins.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Iverson would suck in LA.
    And Cleveland.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

obviously defense doesnt matter to the average slam reader….iverson can’t do what fisher does for LA. no sir-e

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

I hope the Knicks lose by 30 to the Nets tommorow so they reconsider. BUT I think there still is a chance the Knicks are still going to sign him by Monday because what happened was Miami said they wanted AI and they really did it so they can offer AI more money and that way if the Knicks tried getting him they would have to offer more which would cut into their “MASTER PLAN” for 2010 but I don’t think this Iverson to Knicks things is over yet. If it is the Knicks are PATHETIC.

  • peter

Iverson would be terrible for LA…the last thing they need is another scorer…great for Cleveland though. He wouldn’t have a problem playing second fiddle to Lebron…its when he’s playing second fiddle to MIKE CONLEY and RODNEY STUCKEY…for good reason.

WHAT THE F*CK! F*CK THE KNICKS ORGANIZATION. THE LAST TEN YEARS HAVE SEEN THE WORST F*CKING ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE F*CKING LEAGUE. STOP DISGRACING WHAT USED TO BE A GREAT TEAM AND A GREAT ORGANIZATION. MIKE D’ANTONI NEEDS TO STOP F*CKING THE KNICKS OVER BECAUSE OF HIS STUPID SYSTEM THAT DOESN’T EVEN F*CKING WORK. THE ONLY WAY TO REDEEM THEMSELVES AFTER BLOWING MULTIPLE CHANCES AT DECENCY–AND THEY MISS IT AGAIN. WHAT IS IT WITH THE STUPID@SS KNICKS MANAGEMENT? HOW CAN THEY BE THIS F*CKING BAD AT WHAT THEY DO? F*CK THIS SH!T, THE MANAGEMENT IS A JOKE.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

That wasn’t cap locks, either. Wow.

  • fan

James Dolan, can’t run the NY knicks.

    They should have signed Iverson.

    reasons to sign:
1)The Knicks don’t have a number 1 pick due to the Marbury trade.

2)Iverson has a huge chip on his shoulder and he has something to prove.

3)1.3 millioin. price tag. Cheap for an all-star calliber player

    4) He is still an all-star. Look at his stats for Denver. He gets assists and steals in addition to being a great scorer. ie he can run the offense. Both Nash and Kidd are years older and still productive

5)The excuse of hindering the growth of young players is stupid and ridiculous. Toney Douglas, Wilson Chandler. These players belong on the bench. The are not starters. It’s not like these guys are Brandon Jennings or Brandon Roy.

6)Iverson is still electrifying and he will fill seats at Madison Square Garden.

    7) Lastly, Leon Rose is Lebron’s agent. He is also Iverson’s agent.

They should have done this deal. Dolan should not have gotten in Walsh’s way. This is why the Knicks suck so bad. This is why Lebron James will NOT come to NY.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Now, that tirade was conditional–I still think there is a sliver of chance that Iverson becomes a Knick by Monday. The statement in the article comes from an unoffical “source” that’s “close to the team.” If the Knicks do sign Iverson, I take back my statement I guess…

  • mar

knicks are hopless for around the next 12 years. now everybody else should tell me how long the the knicks are hopless. im guessing pople will say 1000 years or so.

  • Shawn

Im done with the Knicks. Seriously i journey twice a year to MSG from London to see my beloved team and for the last decade its been worse than dogsh1t. All off season i was praying we’d land AI. Even for a year there is NOTHING to loose. But the Knicks brass cock up again and actually had the audacity to put Nate and Lee on the trading block this summer and then Nate resigns for an extra £2m? They have way more money than sense. They have NO trade bait. No first round pick. A ton of cap space and no free agent in their right mind would come to MSG. I hope they go into administration.

  • http://none The Philosopher

The thing is, nobody likes playing with him, he is a cancer in the locker room. The Knicks knew this. He has delayed careers (Larry Hughes, Stackhouse, Van Horn, Wallace,) the list goes on. Then he quit.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@niQ not the lakers. not a chance! id say Minny, they have three PGs, a rookie far-from-ready pure SG, and then Sasha who can SG but who belongs on the bench.. give AI the 2 spot and hopefully Flynn can learn the best parts of AIs game and take note of not to imitate AIs flaws… im sure jonny and ramon sessions are only on 20mpg anyway so if AI comes along he only needs to cut into the minutes of those 3 other guards who aint worth time anyway…. CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN WHY KAHN DRAFTED TWO PGS, SIGNED ANOTHER PG IN HART AND THEN MATCHED OFFER SHEET FOR SESSIONS?! 4 PGS IN ONE SUMMER?!? what was that man thinking

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

Second teddy-the-bear… knicks really do deserve a prize for how sh!tly they have been run this decade. In the future if there was a GM school im pretty sure they will use NYK as the model of how not to run an organization (awful draft choices – check, ludicrously overpaid players – check, lack of balance on roster – check, hire a coach who only looked good because of the players he was blessed with – check, constantly fritter away draft picks to prevent rebuilding – check, fail to fill out the seats in one of the worlds biggest cities – check, the list really does go on…

  • iw

wtf is all this talk about taking away from the young guys development? hell if u wanted to develop them send them to the d-league thats what is for. for one year in ny he was going to disrupt development, when u are trying to bring big names next year who will completely stunt the development of the younger players because they dominate the ball also. its too much person hate towards this guy. its funny, he’s younger than nash but he’s old and needs to come off the bench. this league, their phony reporters and fake,no knowledge of the game fans really need to fall back. if u dont like the guy just do like i do when i see sumthin on tv i dont like, turn the channel.

  • Levi Yeti

AI can do what he wants thats the respect he has earned proving that he is the best lil man ever he damn near broke himself playing this game we all love all i want to see is him in that sixers uni one last time

  • Levi Yeti

ai doesnt even know the meaning of the word quit @$$ %*!#

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

The worst management is not the Knicks it is the Grizzlies. They f*ked up so many times I cant even count. First they take my home team to Memphis thinking itll do better than they f*k it up even more. Now I hate em even more for thinking Conley ahead of AI was a good idea. But the Knicks are horrible aswell pathetic management. I wish I could be a GM today I would sign AI in a heartbeat.

  • Hoodsnake

Iverson will not be a Knick. Good

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariq

    Allenp:
So if he would suck in LA and Cleveland, and if people are criticizing him for not taking a bench role on a contender, what exactly would be the “right” thing for Allen Iverson to do?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariq

By the way, the guy can still play.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    I hear you, Shawn.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I don’t buy it, though. The Knicks can’t be THAT stupid that they’d pass on this, right? RIGHT?

  • TC

Fine, try the Warriors or the Clippers next…..

  • J

@Tariq: no one said that he can’t play anymore. the first right thing to do is to suck 3/4′s of his ego.

  • J

“The Knicks just fu*ked up again. Have fun getting LeBron or Wade because we know that aint happening when Gallinari is the 2nd best player. The Knicks are pathetic this was a match made in heaven.” – do you think that iverson signing can lure lebron or wade to new york? seriously?

  • J

@ fan: “7) Lastly, Leon Rose is Lebron’s agent. He is also Iverson’s agent. They should have done this deal. Dolan should not have gotten in Walsh’s way. This is why the Knicks suck so bad. This is why Lebron James will NOT come to NY.” – how? cause they have the same agent? wow (laughs).

J.R.Smith against the Clippers last night…..play of the year.

  • tavoris

^must not have thought much of Wade’s emasculation of Varejao last week. smh

  • tavoris

Tariq…only a true axhole questions their role on a legitimate title contender. Detroit & Memphis aren’t even legit playoff considerations. Plus, even great players find themselves stuck watching Kobe & Lebron- brilliance.

  • FoCo

I think the illegitimacy of this argument is shown in Teddy’s capslock rant about all the reasons the Knicks are idiots…followed by the “oh well unless they pick up AI disclaimer”

  • http://yahoo RoDney

he is not a smart man to go against the grain even when you know nobody care for your attitude on or off the court and yet you still act like a big baby. He kind of reminds me of Kayne West

  • http://slam liam

the only team left is the heat. If he dosn’t sign with them he will go overseas

  • http://slamonline.com cb 34

The knicks could have really used ai this year. I don’t get it! Duhon, he’s gotta go. Ai would have definitely given them a couple more wins and more shine if anything. Walsh and d’antoni are too concerned about him being a cancer and ruining team chemistry. What chemistry? They blame each other on the court for the world to see. Ai would have been a good pickup for them. Dumb-a$$ Dolan!

  • Brian

Memphis has won 3 straight since their best player quit.

  • http://gffds.com Jukai

    I’ve noticed that too, Bryan

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

I noticed that too considerin they beat us last night, but that was their first road win all season and beating the sixers at the moment really isnt a feat. Even though EB has recovered his game its offset the balance of the entire squad, when there was barely any balance to start with… Nor is beating Minny or the Clips at home any sort of feat….Plus, AI was given 20 minutes a game out of 240 handed out to the squad, and he wasnt even used properly when he was out there… I hear most of NY are in uproar that theyve passed up on AI, at least there is some sense in the grassroots of the franchise

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Exactly what do the Knicks hope to accomplish with Danilo Gallinari as one of its top prospects? D’Antoni is an idiot.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Knicks have LARRY HUGHES at the Shooting Guard! Why not just sign Allen Iverson then? Hughes takes like 16 shots a game! WOW.

  • curtis

he is his own worst enemy , if he wants to play its time to head overseas. who would want this guys problems ?

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@curtis no doubt AI got problems/issues that he will bring to a team. But as for there being 30 teams in the L, some of whom are really quite awful, I cannot see how what AI can bring to a team doesn’t outweigh what the negative aspects he might bring to a squad for at least a handful of teams. Pretty much, a complete load of fallacies have been pinned up AI for past failures. No doubt some of it was asked for when he was demanding a trade out of Phily, especially considering we were pretty much made for him this decade. However, most of it is evidently damaging a reputation when most of it revolving around ifs and buts when there is little factual evidence to support most of the derogatory claims made against him. Does he need the ball most of time is he on the court? Yes. Can he still offer in the region of 25/5/3/1 a night? Yes. Can he upset the balance of a team? Yes. Can he fix the problems of another team? Yes. Etc. etc. The situation is different for every single franchise yet all the problems are being laid at AI’s door and its, for the most part, complete nonsense!
