New Jersey Nets: Historically Futile

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Hours after learning of the firing of their head coach, a depressed (and philosophical) New Jersey Nets team walked into Staples Center in Los Angeles, and made history. Unfortunately for them, it was the ignominious kind.

With their 17th consecutive loss, New Jersey matched the record for most losses to begin a season. It is a mark shared with such forgettable squads as the 1988 Miami Heat and 1999 Los Angeles Clippers.

The Nets must now look to the future, where things don’t figure to get any easier anytime soon. For their yet-be-named new coach, the work ahead is daunting, if not impossible.

The Star-Ledger breaks it down:

The season is lost, consigned into history as a disaster, yet not without talent and assets. Before long, four more guys will get back from injury, but the new guy will have to rework the rotation and find the chemistry that comes with familiarity.

Polish the résumé. There is virtually no chance that anyone from the coaching staff will return this summer, which is just as well — most of them will be working with Frank, who by then will probably have a better job.

There is a host of candidates for Frank’s old gig, though it’s hard to determine why anyone would ever want to step into that minefield. One man who isn’t afraid, is Patrick Ewing.

So, you’ve got that going for you, Nets fans. Best of luck.

Wow poor Skip to my lou and courtney lee. They were in the finals last year and now this

  • BranGor

Now what do they do with Harris once they get Wall? What about the cap space?

This franchise is just riddled with questions.

Thank You very much, Bruce Ratner for ruining one of my favorite basketball teams,I really can’t stand the sight of you right now!!!

    sign AI!!!!

Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley should be fighting for a coaching gig.

If Devin was fit and healthy for the games he has missed it wouldn’t be this bad, even Yi would of helped them through a few of the easy games. However, if you’re giving Bobby Simmons and Trenton Hassell serious minutes at this stage of their careers you are literally begging and praying for trouble.

Considering the team they’ve had this year, and what Franks has done with the team when they did have talent, this firing doesn’t seem ‘right’. What kind of change in coaching direction do they think they’ll get mid-season with this squad. Maybe Avery Johsnon or Byron Scott would be willing to come in but I’m not sure they (or anyone else) would qualify as an upgrade – maybe the’ll get Lenny Wilkins to come out of retirement.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Pat Ewing and Mark Jackson as a coaching duo, with Charles Oak as an assistant coach. That would be AWESOME.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

With an injured Devin Harris, signing AI is looking like a good move for the Nets.

Not to quibble, but the ’88 Heat and ’99 Clippers are actually UNforgettable. And whilst the Nets Finals teams will eventually be forgotten, the ’09 Nets will live on forever in infamy.

quibble! nyets suck, they will make history when dallas steps on them. too bad for brook lopez, he is a fn beast. btw, whatever happened to all that “no more centers in the nba” bs EVERYONE was harping on? dwight, bynum, al jeff, brook, bargnani, noah, biedrins, gasol, gasol, timmy, jo, yao? etc

  • Yerkazuna

Yo wut slam say the nets would do in seasonpreview

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Tarzan: Dwight has no offense, Jefferson has no defense, Bynum has neither, Noah is subpar, JO is always injured, Yao makes JO look like an iron man, Biedrins makes Artis Gilmore look like the most offensively gifted player on the planet. Timmy D and Pau G are listed as Power Forwards.
So the only real do-it-all centers in the L are Lopez and Lil Gasol. And they are certainly not on the level of Robinson and Ewing.
I really was hoping Dwight would develop some go-to offensive weapons this year… but it doesn’t look like he’s done much of anything in the off-season. I’m disappointed.

Don’t draft Wall! Draft Craig Brackins or Patrick Patterson. They need rebounding and more post presence and those guys alond with Brook can do some damage down low, guard? They’re set if they’re healthy, Harris, Lee, CDR, and Alston

Perhaps they won’t turn it around, but they have enough talent to make it a decent season.

Ewing is an interesting candidate. Although a former Knick still mega-popular in the tri-state.

  • JD

Man, I feel so sorry 4 Courtney Lee right now

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

juaki has some points but obviously exaggerated. CRAIG BRACKENS!!!!!!!!!!!!! this guy is going to be great!

  • ConeyIslander

The good thing about this is no one is looking at my CRAPTASTIC Knicks right now. YaaaaaaaaY Nets! Lol

  • Hoodsnake

Yeah if it wasnt for the Nets the Knicks (and Wolves) would have been worse if possible and if they were tanking its for the Jazz WTF?!

  • Mack

poor old nets… i REALLY hope my mavs beat them, otherwise… ill have to kill myself, warriors with 6 ppl and then a winless team, omg…

i dont think the nets will get john wall, i believe the utah jazz will, because they have the knicks draft pick this year. and usually the worst team doesnt end up with the 1 pick anyways.
i believe the nets have a good team, that just isnt producing. Harris is a great player, but they dont have a true leader on the floor. i say make some trades, for who i dont know, but bring in some veteren typer players, who can not only lead by example, but be that go to guy in and out of the locker room.
