Post Up: Dirk With the Dagger

And Jax has been freed!

by Holly MacKenzie/@stackmack

How many of you turned on the Bucks/Mavs game thinking it would be a bust?

I was hoping for a good one and I certainly got it. After seven seconds of anger over the Mavs knocking down Milwaukee, I was able to appreciate the ridiculousness of Dirk’s shot. How can a man who is that tall be that smooth? And how can a man that smooth be so horrifically awkward at doing everything else but dominating in basketball? While the shot was great –and I think we all kind of knew it was going in as soon as he got the ball– his celebration afterward was even better.

The whole game was awesome. Jennings finishing with 25/7/8, but having it in his head that he was shooting three-pointers down the stretch was a page straight out of a former ROY’s personal playbook, but eight games in, I’m still beyond impressed with his game. I also loved seeing Coach Skiles go over to console Jennings after a missed three late. It was an impressive game from Milwaukee who fell behind by as many as 18 in the third, then cut their deficit to three at the end of three thanks to a long ball from Jennings. The fourth and overtime periods were fun, with each team going back and forth and then Dirk saving the Mavericks as his shot bounced, up, up, up and then finally through the net.

Shoutout to J. Kidd for the wild line he threw up, finishing with nine points, 10 rebounds and 17 assists. The Mavs lost Shawn Marion to a sprained ankle in the second quarter. My favorite quote from the game was Jennings as he explained his missed shot in regulation that would have won it for the Bucks:

“I wanted the ball at the last second. I didn’t know Ersan’s man had doubled me. When I looked back at the tape I saw he was wide open for the jump shot. It’s something I’m going to learn from. It’s a long season.”

He will learn. As he learns, so will Ersan Ilyasova who was fantastic, finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds, hitting 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. He’s snuck up on me, but I like him.

Rashard Lewis was back for the Magic last night. Stephen Jackson was in uniform for the Bobcats as well. I tuned in just in time to catch his first three points as a Bobcat, then flipped over to NBATV to watch the Bucks/Mavericks. The Magic won that game, but I’ve got to say: I drafted Dwight Howard in my fantasy league and he’s not overwhelming me like he did last season. Due to a problem with my stupid firefox I also ended up picking Chris Bosh with my second pick when I was unable to “un-autodraft” and right now, Bosh is the fantasy stud. Funny how that works out sometimes.

Atlanta shawty, indeed. After finding themselves at the top of the power rankings this week, it appeared as though the Hawks didn’t know how to handle being number one, stumbling their way through their match up with the Trailblazers. The game went into overtime as Rudy Fernandez hit a three for the Blazers who outscored Atlanta 27-18 in the fourth. Atlanta woke up in the extra session and came back to take control of the game behind Joe Johnson’s 32 points, eight coming after regulation. Josh Smith pulled down 16 boards as the Hawks outrebounded Portland, 47-37, including a 15-8 advantage on the offensive glass.

As you know, Allen Iverson and the Grizzlies have mutually agreed to end their one-year contract. That’s all I can give you on that right now because I’m still feeling far too jumbled and I’m not quite prepared to work my way through my thoughts on that just yet. I will say, I do not believe Iverson is done.

Hearing Monta Ellis say he doesn’t know who will play defense in Golden State now that SJax is gone… That was funny. If you PLAY in the NBA but somehow have neglected to realize that Raja Bell has built a 10-year career on his reputation as a defender, I don’t even know what to tell you. Where have you been?! Have you read a scouting report? Do you watch your opponents play? I’m sure Monta wasn’t in a great mood after losing Jackson, but damn.

I’m really looking forward to the Denver/Toronto game this evening. Ty Lawson has been added to my must-see rookie list. Rookie point guards. They’re great, aren’t they.

ps… Rodrigue Beaubois….Rodrigue Beaubois…Rodrigue Beaubois….Rodrigue Beaubois.

    Nah Z, even then.

  • jk_light

Sure he failed in the Golden State Series but it wasn’t all on him as the Coach was the first to make a mistake and nearly everybody else played really bad. And in the Finals he didn’t choke like some of you see it in my opinion. And they were the favorites against Miami because he played so great before.
And I can say that he is not perfect amd missed some good oppotunities but who didn’t. Sometimes I’m missing that killer instinct with Dirk too but he did so much and had so much success that I don’t want him to be like someone else. He already is one of the best players in the world in the last ten years and that while being more down to earth than 90% of the other guys. Even though I like the skills of players like Kobe, Bron and Wade, Dirk makes it easier for me to root for him

Why are peeps even bothering to say lucky bounce? It wasn’t a bad shot that somehow went in (thats the definition of a lucky shot). he absorbed contact, then let go a fadeaway J, all in the clutch. None of them easy to do even for pro’s. It bounced around in rim several times before it jumped out, so equally people could argue it was unlucky if it had popped out and not gone back in… so wtf?

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

Oh hang on, wait, it could be that you haven’t actually seen the shot?!

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Am I the only one that doesn’t understand the logic behind how a lucky bounce would necessarily have to be ‘unlucky’ if it had not gone in? An unlucky bounce is when your shot is halfway down then pops back out.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Dirk’s shot was halfway down, popped out, hit high on the glass, then dropped straight through.
The only way you get that kind of bounce is if you’re a good shooter.
And be honest, if you were watcing the game, which I was, you fully expected Dirk to hit that shot. I knew he was gonna hit before he even turned because of who was guarding him.
Dirk has failed in the past, and he hasn’t always been tough. But, dude has also hit a LOT of clutch shots. I think he’s a tad soft, but he can play with pretty much any forward in the league. He has his own moves that are unstoppable, and even if I don’t think they are the moves a 7-footer should rely on, he’s damn good at them.

  • steve-io

peeps don’t know how to play ball if they said it was unlucky it didn’t go in. If it didn’t hit straight net, it’s a lucky shot. not to hurt any of these dawgs feelings that don’t even play ball saying that sh!t. peace

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I agree with Allen. Meanwhile…..Brandon Jennigs just scored again.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

Its relatively it simple, Dirk put a little too much spin on the ball hence the pop out; but if you think that reaction (the erratic 3rd bounce) was normal, normal meaning thats what would predomiantly happen if the shot was taken again and again and again then… doh!! more often than not, with the same parameters (distance from net, arc of shot, spin of ball) the ball would have gone in, so please, genuinely explain to me, in the name of phsyics, how that is it remotely fortutious if the ball would go in more often than it would not?! That bounce was an anomaly, thats how it would have been viewed unlucky by some…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Eboy
    Dude finished with 25, 8 and 7.
That’s damn impressive even in a loss. And he almost hit that late three, he was just a little short because he rushed his shot.

Luck is a combinatin of probability and best outcome.
Just because something is improbable doesn’t make it “lucky.”
It would have to be improbable and fortuitous.

Jennings played a lot of games in italy last year but not 82 does he sputter at the end of the year this year? I hope not I’d like to see him put up iverson-esque rookie numbers 23 and 8 or even 22 and 6 would be superb.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

In the same sense, you cannot call that shot a ‘dagger’.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Or maybe because it won the game you can…..ahhh….whatever.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

My Pistons play the Lakers tonight and i’m happy because the Lakers are struggling right now but i’m also scared because they will be playing pissed off from the latest losses.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Hey tad how do you feel they’re shaping up so far?charlie v needs to watch some old rodman tapes dudes got no rebounding.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

By rebounding do you mean eyebrows?

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

Tad that shot most certainly was a dagger… to my HEART! haha I wanted the Bucks to get that game so badly.

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

Some of those shots Ilyasova was putting up made me ask ‘What are you thinking?’ but then a bunch of em ended up going in. Dude seems like a pretty nice player. Curious to watch more of him.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

BTW, When did Sheed become a poor man’s Matt Bonner?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Shia: Charlie V has not impressed me so far, at all. I mean, dude can shoot and he can put the ball in the basket, but he has to be the softest 7-footer I have seen on the Pistons. Mehmet Okur looks like Oakley compared to him. His rebounding and boxing out is god-awful. He fails to move his feet very much on defense. I need Ben Wallace to stomp a foot in his a$$ and get him to play with more intensity.
Other than that, i’ve been pleasantly surprised with the Pistons so far. They are 5-5 but have not been blown out and seem to playing hard every night. Injuries to Tay and Rip haven’t helped.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Hi Holly! We are gunning for your boys tonight.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Even stuckey looks good tad and not to bring up a sore subject but if they let iverson play the way they let bg play while retaining sheed for his rebounding and interior defense last year would have been a hell of a lot different.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

‘It was a little lucky at the end,’ Nowitzki said. ‘I thought it was going to swish, then when it rattled off the rim, it seemed like it was in the air forever. The bounce obviously was lucky. But it dropped in and we’ll take it.’ That settles that.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I agree Shia, to an extent. However, the big difference between AI and BG is that BG doesn’t care about coming off the bench. Ben Wallace is doing an admirable job on the boards so far. As for Stuckey his defense has greatly improved. I’m saying he may make all defensive team this season his defense is that good. I am also happy with his jumper so far. You can tell he has been working on his J during the summer.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@AllenP, dude i think you misinterpreted what I meant…. what i’m saying is, in response to those who think it was, his shot wasn’t lucky… for a start it takes a hell of a lot of skill to absorb contact then an shoot an accurate fadeaway with less than a few seconds on the clock. Perhaps, if you’re inclined that way, you can say his 3rd bounce (when the ball jumped out) was lucky, in the sense it dropped straight back into the basket. But the fact remains, that very same bounce was a freak of physics, so therefore I rightly argued that by the very same measoure, people could say he was unlucky if he missed because normally the ball would have rattled around the rim and dropped in. In short, im telling the Dirk naysayers to stfu because such comments are needless; dude could cure aids and haters would still complain about it

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@Myles, Dirk says the bounce was lucky. I said the bounce was open to interpretation whether it was lucky or not, its subjective. Considering normally such shots would have continued to rattle between the rim and drop I wouldnt consider that bounce lucky, because the end result is the same. But for the people saying his “shot” was lucky I’m explaining it wasn’t, they act as if he just jacked up some complete no hoper yet by some otherwordly chance it went in?!?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Dirk lovers are too sensitive. I wasn’t hating on Dirk or his game, I know dude can straight ball. I just had the opinion that the shot got a lucky bounce. The degree of difficulty to get off the shot was certainly impressive but it looked like a lot of his shots he takes.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

That’s because dirk is such a p*ssy it trickles down to his fans tad.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

What’s amazing with Dirk is that the shot you would want a 7 footer to take if you’re defending him (an off the dribble turn around fadeaway from the top of the key) is actually his go-to move. You’re basically just hoping that he’ll is because there is no way you’ll prevent him from getting it off.

  • tavoris

maybe people should stop looking at Dirk like a power forward. He is a small forward that happens to be really tall. Funny thing is, T-Mac is taller than his listed height-as is Durant…both are pretty close to 6’11″.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    360
My bad. I actually agree with you. I obviously misunderstood what you wrote.

  • a_whiteman

I’m so incredibly sick of these ignorant, so called basketball fans who day dirk only gets it done in the regular season. First off he is the ONLY guy to lead his team to eliminate the spurs on their homecourt since duncan arrived. He has lost in the first rond twice in seasons, and the man ups almost every statistoc imaginable in the postseason. How many guys can say HALF of that. People just point to the g state debacle andsay he doesn’t produce, even that series he averaged 20 and 10. Dirk is the muthaf@!$!@ man show some damn respect for the best european player ever and the 3rd best pf of this decade.

  • Hoodsnake

Luck is being being ready when the oppertunity presents itself. Dirk was ready…

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

Who does not understand Dirk is as good as ANYBODY in this league, also as clutch and as good a playoff performer as anyone not named bron n kobe maybe, is JUST STUPID or very dumb!! HE LITERALLY CARRIES THAT TEAM ON HIS BACK…THAT TEAM WITHOUT HIM IS SH!T…oh and Beaubois was an excelent pick for the Mavs..also, THE TRAIL BLAZERS WERE ROBBED BY THE REFS IN ATL..I said it

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Which ugly chick did he celebrate with?

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Jameer Nelson out 4-6 weeks. White Chocolate – your time is now!!!
Say it with me – MVP!

  • tavoris

Anton, the cougar that is in jail for fraud & identity theft.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Flip Murray had 31 points last night. Holly doesnt care. :(

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

ps: Raja Bell isnt much of anything anymore, so when Monta wonders who is playing defense, he needs to keep on wondering.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Holly Mackenzie doesnt care about Flip Murray people! Seriously, 31 points doesnt get a mention but Ersan Ilyasova does?

  • tavoris

lol @ BETCATS…he’s really proving himself to be a prick

  • tavoris

BETCATS, it’s because we already knew Flip could score.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

tavoris it was a career high. That merrits a “and some guy named Flip Murray scored 31 points” type mention.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Raja Bell is going to sit out the season. Looks like Golden State traded Stephen Jackson for Vlade Radmonivic! How can you tell me we got a raw deal now?

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@Anton…yeah, that con chick was ugly as sh!t…I mean, for me to be conned by a cougar it would have to be super hot AND I would have to be a millionaire!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Raja wants a buyout. Then he can sign with a good team.
I kinda like how players are becoming more gully about getting traded and how they handle being traded. It started with cats like Alonzo, but now everybody is doing it.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I remember that, Zo was not even faking like he was going to report to TO. With that said, there are only so many contenders. Some of these vets will have to fall back and play with a struggling team if they want a check.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Allen, read before you comment. Raja is opting for season ending surgery, and since he is a expiring contract he will never have to be a Warrior. I doubt he will even go to the games.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Raja bell does not have that kind of swag. No way he dictates who he plays for if I was nellie I’d tell him to go f*ck himself.
