Post Up: Melo vs. Mayo

Guess who wins this one?

by Holly MacKenzie

Ooof. It’s tough when the team you watch day in and day out loses.

People have constantly been asking me if I’m a Raptors fan, but it’s hard to describe. I’m a basketball fan. I’m a basketball writer. I root for players, good stories and great games. That being said, seeing the same group of guys every day at practice, hearing them talk about how much they want to do the right things and win, watching them stay late after practice to get extra shots up, you want them to succeed.

That being said, it was easy to fall in love with the game the Magic were playing yesterday, taking down the Raptors 125-116. With Vince Carter and Mickael Pietrus out, they get huge performances from JJ Redick (career-high 27 points to go with six rebounds and five assists in a career-high 45 minutes), Ryan Anderson (20 points, five three-pointers), Jameer Nelson (30 points, five three-pointers) and Matt Barnes who had six steals in the game to go with his 12 points. Dwight was Dwight, finishing with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

The Raptors defense was AWOL yesterday afternoon. Chris Bosh put in another monster performance, finishing with 35 points and 16 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough. It’s got to be tough to put in performances like that and still get the “L.”

The interesting thing is: despite the Magic connecting on 17 three-pointers, Dwight goes 14-16 from the free throw line while Bosh finishes 13-19. On a normal night, those numbers would be reversed. Yesterday, the Raptors were down 22 before the midway point of the second quarter.

There really isn’t anything I can say about the Lakers. Using an 18-0 run in the third quarter to blow open their game against the Atlant Hawks, they just look too good. Lamar finished two assists shy of a triple double, Kobe had the 41 points to go with five steals and Andre Bynum scored 21 as the Lakers shot 52% from the floor.

It looked ridiculously easy for the Lakers. Too easy. While the final score was 118-110, that only happened thanks to the Hawks pouring in a 34-point fourth quarter.

And this was without Pau Gasol in uniform. Easy to see that they weren’t happy about the loss to the Mavericks on Friday night. You get the feeling the only team that can stop the Lakers are the Lakers themselves. Or, perhaps Denver, if Melo can keep up this insanity. So all over the Melo train right now. It feels so, so good to watch him playing like this, where it’s easy and he’s dominating and looks like he’s having fun.

Game of the night was definitely the Memphis/Denver contest, with the Nuggets winning 133-123. Melo finishes with 42 points, O.J. Mayo notches a career-high 40 and the Nuggets move to 3-0 on the season.

37.7. This is Melo’s point-per-game average through three contests this season. It’s early, but damn I hope he keeps it up.

I’d like to bump them up to that second spot in the Western Conference. People made fun of me for thinking they’d be great, but they certainly look good through four games. I really don’t know if anyone can stop Melo if he continues to keep his eye on the prize and his focus right.

Trippy, trippy to see Joey Graham out there. I’m used to Sonny Weems now, and he looks so much like the Graham twins, that I still do a second glance every time I see Joey.

I didn’t see the Celtics take down the Hornets, but Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo had some words? If you saw the game, fill us in, because I’m hearing/reading that Paul followed the Celtics after the game and Byron Scott had to go “retrieve” him. Here’s a clip from the game.

I don’t really know what to make of the Hornets so far this season. I know I feel badly for Chris Paul and want him to be on a winning team, he’s too good not to be. The Celtics won the game last night 97-87, with Paul Pierce scoring 27 points on 10-14 shooting.

Was surprised to see the Heat take down the Bulls, 95-87. Mr. Dwyane Wade scored his 10,000th career point in this one and they got the victory. I had the Heat falling this season. Had them in the playoffs, because you never count out a team with a player like Dwyane Wade, but I didn’t like their makeup. They’ve started the season 3-0, so what do I know? Luol Deng had 26 in the loss. So happy he’s back. Udonis Haslem had 19 points and 11 boards for the Heat while Wade finished with 25.

Jermaine O’Neal broke his nose in the game, but said he doesn’t expect to miss any time or wear a face mask. Yipes.

The Blazers lost a tough game on Saturday night, but came back to get the 83-74 victory over the Thunder last night. It was a horrific shooting night for Kevin Durant who finished just 3-21 from the floor.

The Suns took down the TWolves, 120-112 and they were led by their new stud, Channing Frye. My goodness. Frye finished with 25 points, including six made threes. Steve Nash finished with 14 points and 14 assists as Grant Hill continuesto defy all laws of aging  and rewrite his playing history with 23 points. Ryan Gomes finished with 23 points on 10-13 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds.

Yesterday was a day where I missed a bit of action, because I was at the arena doing work stuff for the Raptors/Magic game. Getting home to catch the end of the Memphis/Denver game and then watching the Lakers/Hawks and seeing 42, 41, and 40 from Melo, Kobe and Mayo made me smile. It’s like three waves of greatness. Yes, I still think Mayo will get there.

What up, Holly. Mayo’s trying to get his before A.I. gets back, Huh? lol.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Carmelo Anthony is no joke. The dude is in it to win it. And that Celtics-Hornets game last night was one of the most boring games I’ve watched in a while. Damn.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Hey Holly. The Lakers do look good. And to Eboy, BET, Anton, and the rest of you Kobe haters… Kobe has definitely slowed down. He should retire.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    B. Long! Haven’t talked to you in a while, man. How’s everything going? Your kid?

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Anybody else notice the Cavs winning games now because Bron didn’t pile his stats as much as he could?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

And Dwight with 14-16 from the free throw line! He’s finally perfect (cough, cough)!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

@ James: I wasn’t alive, but if I’m not mistaken, Jordan owned every day while his team lost until he learned to back off a little bit (Pippen). So, in this way, LeBron=MJ? ;-)

  • http://fkjdslf.com Jukai

Nash is ballllling, lead the league in assists again? Not out of the question.

  • http://fkjdslf.com Jukai

James: Did you mean that seriously, or do you not watch Cavaliers games? what’s up with that… It’s been 100% Mo Williams

  • Sparker

chris bosh is the only player i know who can be depressing on his way to 35 points.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Nash is playing great right now. Suns 3-0???

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Heat 3-0….f*ck all your worlds!!!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

He didn’t play last night, but whoever’s not keeping track of Brandon Jennings so far needs to get into it. I know it’s three games in, but the dude has 20.5 points, 6.5 assists and 5.5 boards a game, to go along with 1.5 steals and a highly unexpected 2.5 threes a game. ROY candidate!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Congrats Eboy….Udonis and O’Neal have been playing out of their heads. Have you been to any of the games so far?

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Eboy… that won’t last past tomorrow.
co-sign moose. He is ripping the stats apart for my fantasy team. I think hes got ROY. BUT, Stephen Curry, if SI is right about him he is suppose to avg 28 ppg lol.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

James, I think that SI had posted his stats from last year, not his projected ’09-10 stats.

  • cramzy

I really hope Melo can keep this up so we can get back to the Melo/Lebron discussion. Lebron and D.wade been lapping my dude. This could be the year for him.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I love how ppl say James is piling up his stats like the numbers are empty. He took a backseat and had only 11 shots because Mo and Z couldn’t miss and Delonte was back. Jamers, don’t be that guy that says that Kobe can do no wrong and Bron can do no right (or vice-versa). / Judging by the first week of the season, it’s not only the Lakers that can beat the Lakers: the Celtics can beat ANYBODY in this league. Actually, they would have to be #1 in a power ranking right now.

  • Fred

    Melo is mad nice!

  • cramzy

OH and cosign the hell outta eboy!!!J.O.- 10 rpg? Let’s go heat

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

So true, Z. My Beantown Bombers are owning atm,

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

So far, Artest AND Shaq have looked awful. Artest is shooting like 25% across the board (fg, ft, 3pt). The Cavs are playing their best ball with Shaq sitting. Ariza and Ben Wallace are balling. Funny how that goes.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Melo is ridiculous. So is Jennings. Kobe’s huge game against the Mavs sure didn’t change my opinion of his lost step in his game. The Celts aren’t losing any series to anyone if they’re healthy. Unless the Lakers bench suddenly sprouts Byron Scott, Robert Horry and Mychael Thompson.

  • http://hoopmixtape.ning.com/ Simon S.Y Lawy

    Melo scoring leader 09-10 … ???

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

cramzy, considering he doesn’t do much but scoring… melo would have to be a far better scorer than the other two to leap back in the discussion. 29-30 ppg wouldn’t be enough because the other two give you that, i’m talking 33-34 ppg.

  • http://hoopmixtape.ning.com/ Simon S.Y Lawy

Don’t hate the Lakers or Kobe, they’re just that good…Lakers repeat

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Um, the Lakers didn’t look that good on Friday….. The point is its waaaaay too early in the season to make definitive judgments about any team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

lol the Celtics do look unstoppable!!! So do the Magic though. No Shard, Vince, Pietrus!! And still win.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

The Lakers have holes that go beyond their complacency: 1- Depth: besides Odom, most if not all of their bench players would have a hard time getting burn on another conteder. 2- PGs: to be blunt, they’re not very good. 3- Health: Bynum. 4- Artest: he has plenty of time to get acclimated but, so far, he has been absolutely terrible. Now, of course, they are supremely talented and have a good chance of repeating but those issues are real and it’s not a foregone conclusion that they will. ESPECIALLY since Boston is murdering everybody.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I like Shannon Brown. He deserves more minutes. F*ck Farmar. And yeah, the Magic look really good too….but their D isn’t as imposing as the Celts.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Nah, nah, nobody can get past Boston’s D. For those of you who haven’t watched all of the Celtics games, Kendrick Perkins has improved every part of his game noticeably.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Moose, I would like to see Sheed not just float around the three point line though. Brings back bad memories of last season in Motown.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Eboy: How do you feel about Jamario Moon since you had him last year? He looks good on paper, seems to have all the tools and is labelled as a lock-up defender. BUT, I’m nervous whenever he’s iso’ed, he bites on every pump fakes and apparently Marquis Daniels is his real daddy. On top of that, he jacks up treys and doesn’t even go to the rim like that. I have to say that I was quite relieved when Mike Brown decided to exclude him of the 9-man rotation last game…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

I completely agree, Eboy. When RayRay and House were out there on the court with him last night I was yelling at the screen. And Kevin Garnett is back in full form on the defensive end. DPOY candidate.

  • Veskit

Don’t forget the Magic! I saw their game against Phillie and they looked strong. And that win yesterday against the Raptors without Carter, Lewis and Pietrus… impressive!

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Sheed’s contributions have been overrated so far. The return of KG and the addition of Daniels have been key. Sheed is pretty much Matt Bonner with swag nowadays. And when it ain’t falling from deep, he’s pretty much useless. WHen was the last time he went strong to the rim on a post up? 2006? He’s takling over 6 3′s per game right now.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Z….I liked him well enough….definitely a poor mans Matrix. He has the tools to be really good in the right system….that being said, he just needs to play the role of dirtywork guy for the Cavs in his minutes (rebound, defend, take only OPEN threes and, take charges, run down losseballs)all stuff that would keep Lebron from having to do 298 things when he can do 290.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Also….Garnett’s J is still money and his fade away is still deadly. But there is a definite loss in lift on his shots and rebounds…so if he is going to be the 2005 C-Webb in 2009, the rest of the squad better stay up all season. And Paul losing that extra weight is a good look on him…and his game. AND………Shelden Williams actually has been decent….who knew?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Holly, they had the 2nd best reg season record and lost in the Conf finals, why shouldn’t the Nuggets be considered, “the 2nd best in the west?”

Sick of hearing about offseason moves dictating who(m) is going to be challenging for a conference title.

Then, again, I am one of the few that think the Artest move will hinder the Lakers.

Ty Lawson for ROY. Dude has been way better than expected.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Shelden has been playing his role very nicely. His role is to hustle, play good defense and grab a few boards. That’s it. And he’s been doing it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

I think Moon is kind of a joke on the Cavs team. He is the type of player who has a few good seasons on a bad team. But when he joins a contender he shys away from everything. So far his D is terrible, he does try and block every pump fake, and his shot is terrible. Even though he hit alot of 3′s in pre-season. It’s the real season now and he doesn’t cut it for me.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

The Lakers still haven’t lost this season…that’s always a good thing, Cub.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

@Moose, Williams … he looks stunned of offense. He has almost cuaght 5/6 passes straight to the lips because he is looking around wondering what to do lol. He looks so goofy out there. Then again… he has mrs.Parker on his arm. It all evens out really!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

@James: I know, man. But we don’t have him in there for offense. He missed a dunk last night if I’m not mistaken….I just kinda laugh every time he gets the ball.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

    on*** caught***
Good to see my spelling is working Monday morning.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

And by the way, this dude Bobby Brown for NOLA has one of the ugliest shots I’ve seen in a while. Went 2-7 from three last night and I was shaking my head every time he shot.

  • AlbZ

No word on Brandon Jennings? He looked great the first two games, especially in his debut. Hope he continues to shine :)

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

The Lakers should trade for Chris Kaman.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Can’t be worse that Joakim Noah’s, Moose.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I wouldn’t mind Moon strictly as a back-up 3 whenever Bron is out of the game (8-10 mins a game) + against Orlando and Boston when Cavs slide Bron at the 4 to deal with the shooting 4s. But I wouldn’t be surprised if AP stole those minutes too since Delonte is back. I just prefer a 9-man rotation to a 10-man rotation. Nobody can get into any sort of groove before being pulled out. That’s why I think Portland plays too many guys as well.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

He did miss a dunk. I don’t understand how guys make it to the NBA (Kwame Brown), and have no idea how to play basketball, well offensive basketball.

I coach my base team due to my ongoing injuries. I have a guy who is like a sedated giraffe, he has now played basketball for 3 years. Zero skill and never practices. And he can catch the ball and shoot a shot, dribble a bit lol. But these guys in the NBA, get the best training and STILL have trouble catching a basketball lol. Sh1t is crazy!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

    E!
Did Dallas (another over-hyped team) not just blow them out @ Staples last week?

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Good looking out Z. Portland does have rotation troubles. To many solid bench guys all trying to get they’res on different nights when they get minutes. Broy had a great game the other day though.

  • MattM

So based on Mayo’s performance do you guys think I should trade Rondo straight up for him in fantasy?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I think we were imagining things, Cub. I’m hoping that the Spurs/Nuggets conference finals we hoped for last year will play out this one.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Keep Rondo. No downside to Rondo!!

Cub, they did blow them out. But if you watch the game the Lakers weren’t trying. It was killing me. Acting like the already have the best record. Same thing they did last year … but it ended good for us Laker fans : D!!!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

They’re not trying? In the second game of the season? Wow….just….wow.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

@Eboy – I am hoping the Heat make the playoffs. So we can see the Heat at least play 4 games in the post season. Before Josh Smith tries to between the legs dunk on the whole heat squad!!

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

No discussion of Manu the bat killer?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

The “too many cooks” theory is what I think could play out in LA.
Similar to Portland. Having tons of good players does not make you a great team.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Thanks James….I’ll keep that in mind.

  • http://slamonline.com breeze

anybody who think the lakers wont be in the finals this year…is completely in denial and melo looks insane ..i state what i stated last season that melo is better than lebron..it will display this season ..!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Three games into an 82 game schedule, my prognostications would sound as stupid as anyone else. So Im not going to make any.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I don’t know if they changed it yet, but Sonny Weems’ picture on Yahoo! Sports used to be Stephen Graham. So I don’t know if you meant actually look like Joey Graham or just by the mistaken picture on yahoo.

What’s up with Bynum getting only 3 rebounds yesterday, his laziness pisses me off, he shouldn’t be allowed to step off court without at least 8 boards.

    Moose, don’t believe the hype!

    TAD, what’s good dude?
Still digging out of a 4-ft snowstorm @ my crib last week.

to the regular posters, its nice to see some interesting chat on here for once, without it dissolving into the usual slanging match. Its cool to get some perspective from guys who are close to the action, as someone from overseas who doesnt get to watch a lot of full games.

This is a little late but, what’s good, Moose. Sorry to hear your sick, homie. By the way, Rondo is a giant doucher. He’s making the Celtics even easier to hate.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

If Jennings got to play a game on national tv this year he’d probably get a lot more love. He has looked like The Answer 2.0 so far.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

“By the way, Rondo is a giant doucher. He’s making the Celtics even easier to hate.” I have a ton of love for Brad and love to have our verbal sparrings now and again….but this….this….is the funniest thing I’ve ever read from this kid.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

I’m on vacation so I can’t post much butttt the lakers do NOT look strong. The heat look decent for the east. I do like the way ron put the clamps on joe last night after he exposed kobe for the first 14 minutes or so. Melo playing like I always thought he could is awesome maybe ill stop calling him overrated. I also love the way okc keeps it competitive. And steve nash is ridiculous 3 games in, hopefully he stays that way the majority of the year. And f*ck channing frye where were these skills for the knicks??

I’m good, Cub. Just have been really busy at work, as you can see by my delayed response.

I knew you’d like that e. Like I told lang last night “kobe made joe work for those 20 points, he made him take 8 shots to get there. Now that’s all league defense right there”.

  • http://hibachi20.blospot.com DP

Kobe doin work, 24 on his shirt. JO is actually puttin in some work this year huh eboy? play wit it.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloMan2.0

Damn Melo?!?!? all the haters aren’t talkin so much anymore are they? it feels good to watch the bandwagon fill up… hopefully he keeps it going at this pace

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Not last night he didn’t, DP. I’ll be excited for his rebirth if he can play like that for a couple of months and not just a couple of games.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Well halloween is over eboy so I expect JO to reenter his coffin soon. Maybe when zombieland leaves theatres.

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

    Delonte is back!

  • http://hibachi20.blospot.com DP

lol @bryan. yeah my homeboy thinks JO is going back to the indy days but I doubt it. His knees are just a buckle away from being destroyed and he is right back in a fresh gucci and louis vutton suit. play wit it.

  • http://jdsklf.com Jukai

I gotta apologize to Jennings and say “I’m right HA” at the same time. I said Jennings wouldn’t flourish in the Bucks system with d*ckbag as their coach, but dude has been a killer..
I also have to give a big “IN YOUR FACE” to everyone who told me I was crazy to say Jennings was twice the player Flynn was. C’mon, take that!

  • http://jdsklf.com Jukai

Also, I still want to talk about how Nash is killing it. 20 assists at 35 reallllly?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Jukai: I’m completely with you on Nash. It’s ealy in th season so he’s fresh but he is completely running the Suns again. The real test will come when he’s up against better point guards than Flynn and B.Diddy and it’ll be interesting to see how he lasts over the course of the season but ignoring all that Nash if still incredible.

Wrong on both counts, Juks: Jennings AND Flynn are killing right now.

Which really goes on to show that Euro coaches are a bunch of d-bags. They had Jennings playing off the ball behind an undrafted dude from Penn freaking State! (no offense, ryan)

@ Mr Long: Actually thought about not posting Hills line due to fear of the jinx. But kids just gotta know. He really is the man. I mean, thats a 1996 line right there. Now, where’s my Grant Hill: An NBA Sensation VHS?

Thank god Hill decided not to sign with Boston. It just wouldn’t have been fair.

Here’s something for everyone saying that Melo needs to impact the game more than besides scoring… 3 games in, Melo has more rebounds AND assists PG than both D-Wade and Kobe. Kobe is actually dishing out 2.7 a game. If Melo keeps this up scoring-wise, teams are gonna double him alot, and when JR comes back, Melo’s assists are going to skyrocket.

Socrates philosophies and hypotheses can’t define how Jennings be droppin these mockeries…

Has Flynn been killing? He’s been doing alright, that’s good stats as a rookie but… 15.3 points on 46%, 3 assists, 2.7 rebounds… a 1:1 assist/turnover ratio (that’s pretty damn bad for a point) with the keys to the game handed to him? I dunno if I’d say he’s killing it.

The team that beat Portland? Houston. I know we’re not hanging a banner this year, but aren’t we even worth being mentioned?

juks, i saw him against the cavs and lets just say that the kid aint scurred. minny is going to be alright. now, brandon might be better than him but i cant fault them for taking flynn. the evidence supported that decision. now they can sit on rubio and wait for the best offer. i wouldnt be surprised if donnie walsh offers half the team + cash + picks by next summer.
