Post Up: Melo’s the Man

While JR plays the role of sidekick to perfection.

by Holly MacKenzie/@stackmack

Love doing these liveblogs but I miss lots of action on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

You know what I didn’t miss? Melo dominating the Raptors, scoring 32 points in 30 minutes on 12-for-15 shooting. Oh yes, he was in fine form. Didn’t even attempt a three-pointer. He’s so much fun to watch when he is playing at this level. He will not be denied when he goes to the hoop and if you do choose to double him? Have fun, he’s become a very patient and willing passer who finds his bigmen open under the hoop for the easy dunk.

Not even sure how many three-point plays the Nuggets had against the Raps last night, particularly in the third quarter where they blew open a game that was tied at the half. Besides the second half collapse –a result of the altitude, or just the Nuggets, I don’t know. I’m saying a combo– the effort was a solid one for the Raptors in the first half, especially without Hedo Turkoglu who was sitting on the sidelines in a suit, with that sore hip that he hurt in the game against the Bulls in Toronto last week.

Solid game for DeMar DeRozan, finishing with 17 points for the team. Frustrating game for Chris Bosh who finished with just two free throw attempts and also a technical after slamming down the ball in frustration over a noncall. JR Smith and Kenyon Martin have to be two of the most annoying players to play against in the L. JR bowing and blowing kisses to the crowd when they are up 20, Kenyon screaming into your face after he draws the foul? Yikes.

Also, Raptors fans: Pops Mensah-Bonsu is back! Whooo. I know you’re all excited over this. I’m happy to see one of the nicest guys I’ve ever encountered in this league find a team. Here’s to hoping he sticks for the rest of the season.

Kobe. Bean. Bryant. 100 career 40-point games. Kinda silly. He got to that milestone after draining a three for the Lakers final points in a victory over the Pistons. It’s so wild sometimes to stop and think about the years in his career. I was 12 years old when I started watching him do this NBA thing. I was learning the game as a fan as much as he was learning to play the pro game as a rookie. Through the ups and the downs, struggles and superstardom, fall from grace –oh how ugly that was, particularly as a young girl trying to understand a way of the world that just didn’t compute with my morals– and then finally his redemption, I got closer and closer to the game as Kobe got –and continues to get– closer to greatness. It’s why he’s woven so deeply into the fabric that makes up my basketball mosaic and it’s why I’ll forever be thankful for his journey, because in a way, it shaped my own.

Who were your guys, the ones that you feel you’ve grown up with, with respect to the game?

10-2. This is the record of the Phoenix Suns, aka the first team to read 10 victories. Kinda crazy, I know. Took down Houston last night in a close one. Steve Nash once again came up huge, scoring 12 points but dishing out 16 assists as he got all of his teammates involved offensively. On the other side of things, Aaron Brooks had 13 assists of his own while Carl Landry had 27 points and nine rebounds for the Rockets who continue to impress, even in a losing effort.

26 and 16 for Brook Lopez, 27 points for CDR and still, the Nets lose. 0-11. I’m feeling awful for these guys. Just want them to get the W. It feels a little worse each day and yet, I still feel better about this team than I do about both the Nets and Warriors.

OKC smoked Miami on their homefloor this evening, taking them down 100-87. One night after discussing with a friend that I wished KD could distribute the ball more, the guy pours in a line of 32 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Okay, KD, I’ll try my best not to doubt you anymore, please forgive me. Russ Westbrook had a nice game as well, scoring 24 points to go with seven assists.

And one way I’ve discovered for Anthony Randolph to get playing time for my fantasy team? Get the Warriors to stick with a seven-man rotation. Damn GS. Figure that ish out. Guys are dropping by the day. Thoughts and prayers go out to Kelenna Azubuike who will miss the rest of the season as he undergoes surgery for a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. Also thinking of my man SL in Oklahoma who had to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee and is said to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks. My stomach (and heart) doesn’t deal well with news involving surgery and Livingston, so I’m really sending wishes for a speedy recovery his way.

    Net needs a Win …

  • Wayno Posted: Nov.18 at 9:19 am
No mention on Maxiel’s sick block on Shannon Brown??? C’mon now!

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.18 at 9:22 am
The Heat sucked and the Thunder looked nice. KD had no trouble getting shots off on Q because of their size difference and Spo again f*cked with the rotation patterns and gave Beasley limited touches. In a game when your offense is having a hard time scoring, you HAVE to get your second best offensive player the ball in situations and he did not do that. Best part of the game to me was when Westbrook and JO had their little temper tantrum. After they were seperated Westbrook mouthed “fu*k you as*hole”. I don’t think he ever saw the Detroit/Pacer brawl footage and JO’s ability to wreck people with one punch. The Tunder have a nice young squad…except when Kristic comes in with perhaps the worst male pattern balding hairdo in the league.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 9:26 am
I guess you didn’t watch the Suns game, because Nash almost shot the Suns out of the game… 50% shooting for the last six years, and he goes 2-10… ouch!
    The heroes of that game?
Jared Dudley… and JARRON FREAKING COLLINS! No really, his six points, six rebounds, two blocks don’t tell half the story. He had huge plays down the stretch once Frye fouled out. Seeing Collins do all those things really proves that the Suns are mostly winning on grit and luck, but I gotta revel in it, everytime it looks like they’re going to lose, they lock down the other team and hit big shots. It’s weird. It wont last.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 9:27 am
Hey, Eboy, can you tell me again how much the Heat have improved from last year?

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 9:28 am
Props to Westbrook. Dude would have gotten wrecked by O’Neal (I still remember that Karate-style sliding punch in Detroit) but he didn’t back down. Brave little sucker. Or stupid.

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.18 at 9:33 am
Inching closer to that 30 and 8. Melo great scoring, one rebound? Step that up. Eboy jermaine should have given him the charlie ward treatment and flipped his little ass.

  • Brad Long Posted: Nov.18 at 9:47 am
Hey E, I read that the reason Wade had a sub par outing may have been because he spent all day after their early morning practice at a Gatorade commerical shooting. Confirm or Deny?

  • Brad Long Posted: Nov.18 at 9:54 am
Wayno:Mikki Moore is somewhere, watching that block on replay, taking detailed notes.

  • Wayno Posted: Nov.18 at 10:01 am
    bwahwaha, nice B.Long, nice!

  • Anton Posted: Nov.18 at 10:20 am
Dampier’s contract clogs the lane for Dallas.
Where my man Z at? Trade everyone! Build around JJ Hickson, surround him with shooters! Champtionship here we come!!!

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.18 at 10:27 am
Okc 6 and 5! Come on get on the bandwagon.

  • melvin ely Posted: Nov.18 at 10:27 am
holy sh*t jason maxiell. that is one scary man

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 10:28 am
Bryan: Looks like you’re beginning to be right about Durant (your beginning of the season prediction, anyway)

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.18 at 10:31 am
I think so too jukai and after watching him the other night his terrible defense is greatly exaggerated.

  • melvin ely Posted: Nov.18 at 10:31 am
hey, here’s a riddle: when is a charge not a charge? when some bonehead referee decides that it’s ALSO a blocking foul? It’s the rarely (never) called Chlocking foul everybody!

  • niQ Posted: Nov.18 at 10:35 am
The Raptors are forever such a frustrating team to watch. I remember someone wrote an article on SLAM relating it to old school video games and man, it still holds true today. The raptors were playing good all up until halftime. Then everything broke down. Bosh was definitely playing a horrible game. I’m glad DeRozan finally got more touches and I am also glad Sonny Weems FINALLY got to show what he’s got. He was lighting up the summer leagues (I think playing for Denver) and when I heard he got traded to the raptors I knew BC made a good move.
Anyways, yea Golden State is a mess right now (or was as soon as BD left). But at least I just picked up Stephen Curry in my fantasy team =D

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.18 at 10:36 am
Uhm…..his defense IS terrible. Don’t get it twisted. His perimiter game is gangsta though.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 10:37 am
I don’t think he’s that bad of a defender either, it’s just with his athleticism and long-@$$ arms, people expect more. He’s a decent man-on-man defender. Help defense needs some work, but quite honestly, if he’s never a good help defender, who cares?
What I think ISN’T exaggerated is his passing abilities.. I’ve watched him for several games, and I really haven’t been impressed at all. He doesn’t always make the best decisions passing out of double teams, and once he’s driving, he NEVER looks at his teammates to see if they’re open. Passing can be worked on, but not sure the court vision is there.

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.18 at 10:44 am
    Seeeee-fo-loooo-sha! *clap clap…..clap clap* Seeeee-fo-loooo-sha! ok, i’m done.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Nov.18 at 10:56 am
Who is this JR? Earl’s bowing and kiss blowing was kinda bizarre. Kenyon’s intensity accounts for 95 percent of the team’s defensive edge

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 10:57 am
Damn, I’m bored at work with almost nothing to do and no one is posting. Thanks for nothing, guys!

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 10:57 am
Cub: Is the other 5% the Birdman?

  • Brad Long Posted: Nov.18 at 11:22 am
Jukai:The Lakers won and Kobe played great so there goes half the normal comment section right there. Don’t worry, they’ll be back in two weeks when the Lakers lose again.

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.18 at 11:27 am
Eboy when I watched him against the clippers the other night he was everywhere. He’s not a good defender but he’s not steve nash.

  • Brad Long Posted: Nov.18 at 11:31 am
Last night one of the commentators said that Kobe was 15 pts behind Kareem for the all-time Laker scoring record. That can’t be right, can it?

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.18 at 11:32 am
Imagine if the Suns played defense Shia. They might have a better record than the Lakers. Wait….

  • Buschfire Posted: Nov.18 at 11:35 am
Points in the paint favoured the Nuggets 68-36. Denver blew the game wide open in the second half with a seemingly endless series of uncontested dunks and layins which contributed to their 61.5 per cent shooting Why can’t the Raptors play Defense? and when people think they play it, they’re really not, its just coz the other team is too tired most of the time coz they just played a back to back, I’m a big Raps fan, but seriously this pisses me off.

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.18 at 11:36 am
Kareem did play like 6 years in mil b.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 11:37 am
    Jerry West: 25192
    Kareem-Abdul Jabbar: 24176
    Kobe Bryant: 24161
    Elgin Baylor: 23149
So yeah, Kobe’s closing in on Kareem. Of course, Kareem also has 14000+ points scored for the Bucks, so I think Kobe’s got to get a few more buckets before he beats Kareem overall.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.18 at 11:38 am
“26 and 16 for Brook Lopez, 27 points for CDR and still, the Nets lose. 0-11. I’m feeling awful for these guys. Just want them to get the W. It feels a little worse each day and yet, I still feel better about this team than I do about both the Nets and Warriors”
    Let’s play ‘Find The Error’!

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 11:39 am
Of course, I did the math using basketball-reference for Kareem, then figured the numbers were probably all over google (which they were). This has been an incredibly unproductive day.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.18 at 11:42 am
Just joking Holly. Good Post Up.

  • Migs Posted: Nov.18 at 11:47 am
@Buschfire – I can’t even remember when the Raps played good D… probably back in the AD/Oakley days. It’s tough to play good D when your starting PG gets manhandled by anyone and everyone. Billups was running circles around Jose, and if he stayed out any longer, I’m sure Lawson would’ve embarrassed him even more.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.18 at 12:06 pm
Bosh is going to leave almost certainly if the Raptors coach doesn’t start to stress defense more. Giving up points like the Suns and the Warriors is not good company to keep.

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.18 at 12:09 pm
    Bosh is gone already.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 12:13 pm
As said previously, I expect Bosh, Amare, and Boozer to all have new area codes by the time the 2010 season starts off. I wonder how many of them will have Cleveland and Miami zips.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.18 at 12:16 pm
What are the chances Bosh gets traded before the deadline this season?

  • Brad Long Posted: Nov.18 at 12:23 pm
If the Raps are battling in the 6-8 seed in the East playoff race or lower I’d say they’re pretty good, Tad.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 12:28 pm
Going to disagree, I say minimum. Very few teams are going to take a risk on grabbing Bosh who may just opt out next year and leave them with nothing… and the Raptors have got a decent team and they ain’t going to be rebuilding, so they either want HIGH draft picks or star players, and I don’t think they can get that from teams who are uncertain about whether Bosh will re-sign or not.
So I bet the Raptors will keep him and then throw him a ludicrous monetary offer. They don’t want to insult him by actively shopping him.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.18 at 12:50 pm
I’m sure if any team deals for him they will want to have a deal in place for an extension to be signed in order to complete any trade.

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Nov.18 at 12:54 pm
I dont know which inspired the other but that kiss blowing/ bowing thing JR did was exaclty what he would do on NBA2K9 after a select few of his nastier dunks. The best part of the nugs/raps games was after Bargniani put Birdman on a poster(and 1), was KMart yelling “Naaaah F&ck that, he tricked him!”

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 1:01 pm
    WHat up everyone?

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 1:05 pm
Hi James. I see since the Lakers won again, you’re back.

  • Z Posted: Nov.18 at 1:11 pm
Sefolosha might be the best perimeter defender in the league. I’ve seen him frustrate Kobe and Wade so far. He got them out of their comfort zone which is not an easy task. I’m impressed. / JJ Hickson is a pretty good player. Seriously, this doesn’t look like a fluke I think he can play. / Jay Triano was terrible last night, the team was completely gassed at the end of the 3rd q and he kept them all in there. Denver was running a lay-up drill. / Bron had 31-5-12 and I was screaming at him to do more. He is playing unreal basketball so far. Literally coasting and setting up teammates through 44 minutes and scoring every single basket in the last 4 minutes. He’s been doing that for the last 4 games.

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 1:11 pm
Kobe had a great 17-29 shooting is impressive. I like how is taking a lot les 3 pointers.
KD has defense, he just isn’t an amaing defender yet. But Bron never was great at D until last year. And his defense conists of really good help D, not so good perimeter D.
But Bron looks really good right now. His form looks good on his shot. It’s kind of funny that they play better without Shaq.
My boy JAMEER is out for 6 weeks!! My fantasy pool just got a kick in the groin!!!

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 1:13 pm
Actually I shouldn’t be on. I just got in from work all facking night. Again tonight and tomorrow. But I might play in my second basketball game tonight since the ACL surgery repair!!

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 1:18 pm
Sefo is a good defender, but those steals he gets, like the one of Wade last night is a reach, and he is hitting arm, not ball. But the long arms really help him lock up some good players.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 1:23 pm
Z: Hickson’s biggest flaw is his inability to play within himself. Every game, you’ll see him try and dribble too fast and lose it, to try a post move without enough room, to try and throw down a dunk even Richardson couldn’t do. It’s what has held him back. However, as he plays, he seems to be making less and less mistakes. He could have a bright future.
James: Lebron is a good perimeter defender. He usually plays well against anyone he goes against (except for Pierce, who really has Lebron’s number).
Kobe is scary good. The team right now still can’t win without Kobe scoring well, but Kobe’s improved inside game means he’s even LESS likely to have a bad game. Damn.

  • Z Posted: Nov.18 at 1:28 pm
James: I wouldn’t say that. He was very important vs Miami and Orlando. Utah and GState play very fast and small so he wasn’t as needed. But he has to be there for the big boys (SA, LAL, ORL, BOS). / This is getting creepy. Kobe has been playing EXACTLY like Jordan in the second three-peat. No more threes and fadeaways and spin moves from the mid-post area. He barely faces up from the wing anymore.

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 1:31 pm
Bron is a “good” defender, yes. But this is Bron, the King, the man. The best player in the world. And he isn’t top 5 on my list. If Wade had the ball with 10 second left on the clock, to win the game. Bron would not be top 5 defenders I would put on him.

  • Z Posted: Nov.18 at 1:33 pm
Jukai: well he had two very subpar performance against Denver and Houston. It’s possible to make it difficult for him if you have a physical tall wing and send double teams. He will eventually try to score on the double. I wonder how they will integrate Pau in this. Jordan never had to play with low post scorers. Kobe’s got two on his team. You can’t park em both on the high post. Is Kobe going to go back to the wing? / JJ is really playing off of Mo and Bron at this point and converting basically everything. He knows his role. My only thing is that he takes forever to gather himself before going up. He’s getting his sh!t sent back a lot.

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 1:34 pm
@ Z and Jukai… does game right now is ridiculous : D. Hey or Jukai, do ya’ll know anything about iMac and PC. I am buying a Mac, I am trying to find things out. Anyone care to help a brother out?

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 1:36 pm
That was suppose to be Kobe, not does*** lol
And Z, not hey. I am a little sleep drunk from work last night.

  • Z Posted: Nov.18 at 1:37 pm
There’s not one wing superstar who is truly top 5 defensively. Wade, Kobe, Bron, Melo… people blow by them every game. Seriously. I guess they could be excellent but it wouldn’t be in the best interest of the team for them to invest that much energy on the defensive end. On ONE possession though, I think that Wade, Kobe or Bron could challenge any wing. You have to remember that those guys can only be challenged on game winners, you’re not going to prevent them from shooting. You contest and then you pray basically.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 1:39 pm
James: I’d rather not have the discussion on this section, but if you wanna ask me questions (it’s my field), IM me at njl4515 @ gmail . com

Sound good brother, on it now!

  • underdog Posted: Nov.18 at 1:58 pm
The last time Melo started a season crazy fashion like this, he ruined it with a sucker punch. For Mardy Collins’ sake, I hope he won’t make the same mistake.

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 2:02 pm
    A sucker punch, or slap???

  • nbk Posted: Nov.18 at 2:06 pm
how did that ruin the season, he was suspended for like 10 games

  • James the balla Posted: Nov.18 at 2:07 pm
    I sent it Juk’s.

  • MeloMan2.0 Posted: Nov.18 at 2:14 pm

@Holly: if i were not a nuggets fan, Jr would be the last person i wud want to get blown out by… he just loves rubbing the pain in… gotta love him

  • Buschfiya Posted: Nov.18 at 4:34 pm
@ MIGS Damn I miss those days with Antonio Davis Charles Oakley and Kevin Willis filling up the center, Alvin Williams and Chris Childs @ guard and Mo Peterson, and Vince Carter on the wings. damn how times have changed..wish we were just as gritty.

  • Anton Posted: Nov.18 at 5:27 pm
Anyone else annoyed by NBA.com’s new look? I can’t be bothered to read the cities that are playing, gimmie the logos so I can breeze through the lineups.

  • nbk Posted: Nov.18 at 5:32 pm
    didn’t even notice the change…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.18 at 5:51 pm
JR Smith is a very annoying player.
And the best wing defender is still Shane Battier. You could add Ariza and Artest to that, too.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.18 at 5:52 pm
    I don’t have Facebook.
And I never plan on getting it.

  • nbk Posted: Nov.18 at 5:56 pm
Whoa whoa whoa, Ariza, best wing defender?, maybe best help defender not named wade or james

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 6:54 pm
    Allen: That upsets me greatly.

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.18 at 6:57 pm
If anyone wants to hit me up on facebook I’ll accept.

  • Kieran Posted: Nov.18 at 7:43 pm
Completely unrelated but I would just like ti say Thierry Henry is still a disgraceful cheat. That is all

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.18 at 8:09 pm
Allenp: I can dig that. But what’s your blog called again? You don’t link to it…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.18 at 8:12 pm
nbk: Meaning, one of the best defenders at the wing position, because he is a wing player***
He’s a better all-around defender than Wade and LeBron.

  • Nbk Posted: Nov.18 at 9:25 pm
    Hursty – what? What? Haha
Teddy- I guess I just disagree. I can name 5 people off the top of my head I would consider a better defender that plays the wing

  • J Posted: Nov.18 at 11:30 pm
hopefully JJ could continue his game. but the cavs are falling off a bit on defense. giving up more than a 100 in the last 3 games? we need to pick that up.

  • J Posted: Nov.18 at 11:35 pm
Z: kobe on the post was really MJ! that post up is the kind of play i want lebron to really work on.

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.19 at 12:49 am
Dirk Nowitzki is playing like a baaaad mofo. This whole “refuse to lose” thing is now a daily occurence with him. 41&12 against Spurs, Mavs at 9-3, with most of the team’s other stars injured…. I am loving this, but dreading him doing too much too early in the season. Carlysle needs to limit his minutes asap. Dirk’s gonna be dead tired by playoff time if this goes on… Ohhhh Slamonline Dirkbasheeeers: suck it (for the 2nd time this week, more to come)

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Nov.19 at 5:04 am
Every single shot Dirk hit got a lucky bounce, and i dont care how “baaaaad” you think Dirk is, he still crosses the street anytime he sees Stephen Jaskson comming.

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.19 at 6:52 am
Sure thing Boinger, whatever you say oh sage and wise one.
