Report: Grizzlies To Waive Iverson

by Ryne Nelson

Not to be condescending, but maybe some rationality should have been used from the beginning. The Memphis Commercial Appeal (or its quick-hitting Tweet machine) is reporting that Allen Iverson and Grizzlies will officially part ways (H/T Jeff):

Griz and Iverson agree to end contract. Iverson will be waived, sources tell The Commercial Appeal.

Where Iverson goes from here is anyone’s guess. We could argue for hours about where he should go, but it’s clear AI wants to start and play for a winning team. More specifically, he wants a chance at a ring… this season. Would a contender give Iverson the major burn he’s looking for?

I think the conversation starts and stops there.

This is crazy. Will we ever see Iverson don another NBA jersey? I’m not sure what contender would pick him up, especially considering how poorly things went in Memphis. Charlotte maybe? New York?

  • M-Blog

AI could care less about basketball.. He was at the 12 Hotel in ATLANTA on Saturday with few woman who was not his WIFE ..He didn’t looked like he had any worries in the world ..His bankruptcy story is up next sometime in the next 3 years ..Still dropping money on lowlife woman just like Floyd MAYWEATHER .. I was rooting for him but after Saturday I am completely done with him ..The ‘family issue” was , partying with stripperrs in ATL!

The only contenders I could see offering Iverson a starting gig would be Lakers, since the ghost of Derek Fisher is still manning that spot…

Charlotte was looking nice until this morning.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

think the fans in memphis WILL ABSOLUTLY ASK FOR THEIR SEASON TICKETS MONEY BACK?

  • iheartcoffee

Allen Iverson is/was the scum of the NBA, I’m glad to see him gone.

  • Charles Kirk

Boy as a guy from Memphis I hoped that he would comeback and try to make it work. Oh well looks like I’m not gonna ever see a OJ Mayo and Allen Iverson backcourt afterall.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

I don’t think anyone will pick him up. Maybe the Knicks.

  • Young Lebron 23

Well well well…Where will he end up? Scratch that. Will he even play again?

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

Well we know that he will not be going to Charlotte, since the ‘Cats just got a new scoring SG. I sit and wonder what Iverson’s plans for the next few months are, and quite honestly I find myslef basically staring into space, probably as all sports viewers and analysists are doing about this situation. I have a deep passion for Allen Iverson, no lie, I loved watching his game and he was my childhood basketball hero. So to this day I stick with ‘The Answer’ but up until these last dreadful months I find it hard to support him when my many questions have been left blank. I find it quite hard to root for some one who has given up on themselves. To A.I., my favored player, I hope things go well and soon hope to be standing on my feet with great joy for all your great accomplishments, but for now, I sit waiting…

  • toon

I think he should go back to philly, go to the knicks or go to the hawks.

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

For all A.I. haters, try rooting for someone else besides the people who have seen the most success (Kobe, LeBron, and Wade Fans).

Lets play a game ya’ll! Pick 3 title contender teams that should sign AI for a ring. I’ll go first. Spurs, Cavs, & this is a good one, Nuggets. Hit me up on twitter.

It would be nice to see AI go back to the sixers end his career where it started. He can easily start there.

  • http://wordonthestreetsmag.com Rodney K

MOST-OVER RATED PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY!!! I was saying it all this summer and now the “Answer” is letting people know what I’ve known since he was a point for G-Town. He’s a bum!!!

No one can tell me what he does as a player that is a positive for any team. Even when he was a league MVP, he was a liability. He plays no defense, shoots under 50 percent (way under, doesnt pass, rebound or shoot well. And lets not forget about “practice” maybe if he had a decent work ethic, he could’ve been a productive player in his later years. But he doesnt! And this is why “practice” was important.

How did he make the Slam Top 50 players ever? Does hw own stock in Slam

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

gutted! heard more of his troubles than ive seen him play since he left us for denver but dude gotta have enough game for someone to pick him up! if he only wants a ring then i doubt he will be playing again. unless some of the potential 7/8 seeders convince him they got potential to reach finals. hopefully, and i think i speak for every single ball fan, he justs want to play good minutes.
lol @ grizz for one of the worstly conceived signings ever, kudos for them to have the balls to acknowledge and then correct it though

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Wow. He can be basically picked up for the prorated vet min. The Spurs could give him a starting spot since they actually don’t care one bit about who starts. He’s better than Bogans and Mason Jr. combined. Phil Jax has never had a scoring pg ever, it’s by design. Orlando? Meh. Boston? If he ever agrees to come off the bench, he would be devastating. But he never will accept to sit for Rondo. Cavs? He’ll never agree to sit behind Mo and AP. Charlotte would have made sense before today’s trade. Sh!t… it’S looking like Greece or Spain. Sad.

I think we have seen the last of AI, I think the only team he ‘fits’ is the knicks seeing as charlotte just went and got S-Jax. I dont see the knicks or AI coming together. I think this was his retirement which is sad.

The only way AI gets onto a team is thru injury as a late season pickup.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

I can’t believe there are still people saying he would be good here or he would be good there. @Z: Are you fu(king serious? Although Memphis replacing Iverson with Tinsley is like asking if you’d rather have cancer or aids.

  • http://www.twitter.com/andrewkinloch Andrew

No way ho goes to sixers or Cavs. Sixers arent replacing louis williams and the cavs dont need another undersized scoring guard and who do the bench Mo Williams. Remember if Iverson even considers coming back he has to start. there are only two teams that could really accomodate that in my book and thats Knicks or Warriors but i doubt either do it and i doubt iverson even wants to carry on

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Oh well for him. Should have took the 1.5 millie we offered him. Now we got Stephen Jackson, no need for him. Plus, team chemistry is a factor, 1 starter traded for a better one is enough messing with the lineup/rotation for now.

Mass hate and uncertainty for the Answer. Love what the guy did for the game, but he has lost his way. I don’t think whether or not he had family issues or was out “enjoyin da life,” fits in this conversation, but I think he is done for this year. Sorry AI. Sometimes no-one wants the Answer… often because there is no right (or easy) way to express it.

  • Joe

As a celtics fan, I would love to see Iverson come off of our bench (so would 29 other teams) and be this years Stephon Marbury, (except-take-and-make-all-of-the-wide-open-jumpshots-teams-gave-him-instead-of-passing-to-a-player-with-a-defender-on-them)…….I’m just waiting for the next Stephon Marbury “Ustream” show, to see him slurpin’ on Vaseline, and AI sitting next to him spreading lotion over his pancakes………….and Steve Francis in the background chowing down on deodorant!

I’d say Iverson to the Bobcats, with Stephen Jackson!! You talk about making moves?? Man that’ll be a gunner’s dream..excuse me a coaches nightmare unless you are Larry Brown! He can make it work without breaking a sweat! Plus i’d pay hard earn money to see two disgruntled yet incredible athletes bring Charlotte to the Playoffs!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

@M-Blog: You saw AI partying it up with strippers at a hotel for real? or are you just hating. @BETCATS: Why can’t Jackson and AI work together?, Iverson is not a Small Forward and did the Cats really offer him 1.5 mill because I never read that anywhere on the net or never saw anything thing saying he got offered 1.5 mill bi the Bobcats. I know your a die hard Bobcat fan and if you live in Charlotte maybe some local source that never got out said that but could you just let me know if that is true because if it is AI messed up and got greedy and that is what is pissing me off right now.

  • Rich

Dude just refuses to accept that the league doesn’t revolve around him anymore. Seems like yesterday that AI was the NBA’s dopest, most cutting edge, era-defining player. Now, back in the cornrows and still clad in a ridiculous XXXXXXXL suit while the league’s young superstars keep it fresh and clean, The Answer is sadly looking more and more like a B-ball dinosaur.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Knicks should get him and that could be LeBrons excuse to come play their when really he wants a bigger market and better city so he can be a bigger icon. If this is it for Iverson I am very sad about it and want to be the first to say WHAT A CAREER THAT ALLEN IVERSON HAD. TOP 25 ALL-TIME and can’t wait for his speech in 2015 in the Hall Of Fame in Springfield. Thanks for the memories A.I. There will never be another Allen Iverson.

What a sad turn of events.

Steph and AI without a team – who’d have seen this coming ten years ago?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I kinda have to agree with Rich. AI is sorta outdated. From his game to his style. GMs don’t care about the undersized 2s anymore. A guy like Aaron Brooks could have followed the AI model but had to learn the point. If you’re under 6’3, you better learn how to bring that ball up and set up teammates.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

Iverson called Michael Curry a liar. But then before the season Iverson was quoted as saying, while he wouldn’t be excited about a bench role, he would accept it if he was beaten for the spot in camp and coach went with someone else to start over him. Iverson is a liar. And a hypocrite.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jay-Sean

Before I list his accomplishments, keep in mind Iverson is six foot tall and 165 lbs.

    -23,982 career points.
    -5511 career assists.
-Amazing career averages of 27.1 ppg, 6.2 apg and 2.2 spg.
-Amazing Playoff career averages 30 ppg (2nd all-time) and 6 apg.
-1996-1997 NBA Rookie of the year.
    -10 Time NBA All-Star.
    -2001 All-Star game MVP
    -2005 All-Star game MVP.
    -three time steals champion.
-four-time NBA scoring champion. -2001 NBA MVP

    - Iverson is easily the best little man ever.

    What a career.

ai to lakers, could work, not gonna happen though, new orleans, so someone could score without cp3 giving them an open look/basket,nyk so at least it would always be an event at msg, maybe cleveland, think about it, with shaq and lebron on the team they’d kill him if he started to act stupid, plus, delonte west has medical problems and i really can’t stand watching anthony parker play over 30 minutes a night in the nba, if he comes off the bench, gets threes, plays d, ai starts and closes, it could work,as a raptors fan i know that ap is not someone who should take free throws in the fourth quarter, and then the cavs would have 2 of 3 of the raptors killers. Raptors killers, defined as the 3 most dangerous players to play against the raps
    1. AI(2 50 pt games in playoffs)
    2. LeBron(always owns against raps)
    3. Kobe(81 pts)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Seriously? The Warriors should sign him tonight.

  • http://fdjksl.com Jukai

I’m really not even sure what to think of this. I just don’t think this is the end of AI.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

The Knicks fill seats without AI, and they’d be better served giving Toney Douglas as many minutes as they can. I don’t see anyone bringing Iverson in unless there’s an injury around playoff time.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

Um, thanks Jukai, but you missed the point. Thomas has two championships, Iverson has none. And Isiahs career numbers are no joke either.

  • http://NBA.com Miss Kelly

Pound for Pound, I can’t think of a player any tougher that AI was in his day. Under the basket he “took a licking and kept on ticking”. I, also, like one of the other fans, want to thank him for all the memories. I loved to watch him play. Did I miss something when he joined Memphis. Was it not discussed before hand whether he would start or not. Did AI tell them “I have to start or I won’t play”? Did Memphis tell AI “You probably won’t or may not start” If that was done, then there should be no reason that it turned out like this because either side could have ‘just said no’.

  • Michael Scorn

I’m still voting him to start in the all-star game.

  • ClydeSays

One of the most incredible scorers I’ve ever seen. Hope he finds a roster spot on a playoff team & his ego let’s him accept a role.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

@Michael ZN: How is winning a ring at that size hard? One man does not win a ring. Zeke wasn’t even the Finals MVP both times but doesn’t mean he wasn’t the second greatest little man ever. Winning a championship is a team thing and most people do not get that. When you are comparing a player I usually look to stats first because if it were about championships than I guess Robert Horry is better than Michael Jordan. AI scored 24,000 points at 6 feet and he averaged 27 for his career at that size. Very hard to do.

@ Ben Osborne-I’d b willing to bet a lil money that AI in Detroit and Memphis has only been eclipsed (as far as a popular news story) by the Lebron in 2010 chatter.

  • lol

@Rodney K ru kidding me no defence? hes go most steals of anyone in active league, his shooting percentage is down sure som1 tell me what kobe did on sunday? hes old, stupid, Iverson’s career might be over but its still impressive none the less, i mean cmon ur six feet and yet u dominate any team u cross paths with, sure u ballhog but ALL all-stars ballhog its their job Iverson is def. an all time great and only somewhat overrated due to his height

  • http://kingakai.com Alpha-bet

It’s already been mentioned, that the Hornets could be a possiblity, Iverson could start and be the main offensive option, playing with a PG that dosn’t mind passing and shareing the offensive load with CP3. Thing with that is that both those under 6 feet dudes in the backcrout would be a defensive liability
    __
Pheonix could be a possiblity, with the fast pace running game A.I. would definilty get his shots, but another thing Iverson is not used to is not being able to dominate the ball. Playing with Nash he would have to read seams and move without the ball, which he’s never had to do besides that short stint playing with Webber in Philly with Webb in the High Post. C-Webb said one time Iverson struggled with that one time on TNT..(not in a dissing way, just in a matter of fact way).

I’m Sad, but I do feel it’s all his own doing. I met him once, in his rookie year, and I’m 5ft 11, AI was about 2 inches shorter than me. HIs accomplishments at that height make him one of the greatest players in the history of the league. Just a shame he burnt out so quick, and so publicly.

  • Shem

If he just sat his ass down on the bench FOR THE START OF THE SEASON, he would have gotten more minutes. Its not about this year i guarantee if this year worked out and he was quiet off the bench, the lakers give him a contract with more money and the bump over fisher. Sad to see a legend gone like this

Actually, AI in Charlotte would make them a very good team. Iveron at SG, Stephen Jackson at SF, Raymond Felton/DJ Augustin at PG, Tyson Chandler at C, and Boris Diaw at PF. That would be a great line-up.

  • jub_al

as much as i am a fan of AI and as much as i’d love to see him play some more basketball in the L, (and i KNOW he still has quite a bit left in his tank..) i think the reality is, if anybody else had wanted him, they would’ve made him an offer over the summer and he wouldn’t have been limited to signing with the lowly Grizzlies… (funny, i’m from Vancouver and i’m STILL referring to the Grizzlies as ‘lowly’..*sigh*)

    Phone conversation, September this year.
Grizz: Come on down, Allen. It’s gonna be great.
AI: Yeah, can’t wait. After that bench bulls##t last season and the coach not telling me the truth. Don’t even know why they brought me in. Me, The Answer, coming off the bench? A franchise player?
    Grizz:…
Allen: Know what I’m sayin’? With me startin’ and those young guys comin’ off the bench, we’re gonna push into the play-offs, I can feel it.
    Grizz:… *cough*mumble*
AI: We’re talkin’ ’bout startin’, right?
Grizz: Come on down, Allen. It’s gonna be great.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

Can’t tell me that conversation didn’t have to happen at some point.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Isiah Thomas > Iverson all day, every day. Thomas could score nearly as well as AI but CHOSE to be a PG. Also he took WAY more of a beating than AI ever did. He survived Karl Malone’s elbows for goodness sakes. Isiah Thomas pound for pound the toughest and he was just staight up better than AI. If AI decided to give up his selfishness sacrifice his stats and run the point there would be a debate here.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

@J-RO – No. Darryl Morey would treat him like a dude with the Black Plague.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Uhhh no Wayno, Isiah Thomas could not score as well as Allen Iverson. And no, he couldn’t have played shooting guard as well as Iverson has. Just as Iverson can’t play point guard as well as he did.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

AI you just gotta say the words… just gotta say : I am cool with coming off the bench. LA, Boston, Cleveland, San An, ATL, MIA, EVERYBODY would be gunning for you for the prorated vet min.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Part of me just can’t believe that AI is going out like that. Waived by the freaking Grizz. Can’t be right.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

he’s going to new york. might not be so bad.

  • BIRDMAN JR

I still don’t understand what the grizz see in conley. He’s a back-up point at best. How can a so-called up and coming point guard’s team be struggling to score with the likes of rudy and oj on each wing and z-bo and the not so little gasol on the block. The grizz should’ve let AI start because they are not going to the playoffs in the first place. All those idiots that are saying his overrated are clowns. Give u guys a nerf ball and 9 foot rims and yall cant do half of what he achieved in his careers. It amazes me when people talk sh** and haven’t done sh**. What have u done in ur existence to talk bad about some whose being play at a very high level professionally for 15 yrs huh. Riddle me that.

  • http://www.nba.com/playerfile/sean_marks/index.html Michael NZ

@Teddy-the-Bear: I hear you on the lineups. But I’m still taking Isiah over AI any day of the week. And I don’t think its all that close either.

  • BBallrehab

I can understand his frustration: coming off the bench when you know you’re still way better than the starter must be an odd situation…most of all when you’re a 10 times All-Star. The problem is he would act the same way if the the starter was obviously better than him.
AI should really come to his senses, sign for a top contender accepting to be the 6th man, and try to win that ring he deserves…cause nobody can argue the fact that this guy can still ball.

  • FoCo

Isiah over AI for sure…and let me hear it for The Logo over both of them. Even Jay-Sean would have to respect the mans stats and Championship Ring (and who knows how many more rings there would have been if not for Bill Russel and company).

Only places AI could go are the Knicks and Cavs. Knicks because they aren’t going anywhere…what could it hurt? Might even help to just give him the ball and let him chuck. Cavs because Mo Williams is a JOKE. Dude is nothing without Bron.

once again: IVERSON IS ONE OF THE WORST PLAYERS IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME. Of course that doesn’t take away anything from his contribution to the financial prosperity of the league.

Dimitris has such a tiny d!ck.. Seriously, your an idiot.

Let me ask all you haters just one question: what’s the difference so far between AI and king james??
Both of them haven’t got a ring and have only a trip to the finals, both have Roy and Mvp….

So if in five years the king hasn’t got a ring and is a FA would u sign him to make him come off the bench on an horrible team? U gotta be kiddin’!!!
Memphis management hasn’t been clear on him and these are the kind of things A.I. don’t tolerate!
The guy is no way worse than, for say, kevin martin, and he gets over-hyped in SAC-Town!!!

Anyone who sign him at this point will have a 25 pts starter for nickles & dimes!!!

I bet the knicks , charlotte or even OKC should really try for him!! Go Answer, prove’em wrong!!

  • karan

iverson shouldlve become a knick already

@TripleDouble….: your …. always had a much different opinion but i cannot be too … with my kids(??who knows…).

  • FoCo

I suppose I qualify as a “hater”…though I’d like to think of it more as realism.
Difference between Bron and AI? Besides Lebron being an actual GOOD teammate and hard worker? You could take Bron’s overall career PER of 26.3 and compare it to Iverson’s 21.1 (or his career best of 25.9 which is less than Bron’s avg and keep in mind he hasn’t been lower than 29.1 in the last 3 years)
For comparison KevMart rolls with a career 20.26 (not counting his first season where he only played 455 min) and he’s banking 26.2 in this young season.
Mind you this is just one statistic but you show me someone who thinks AI is as good as Lebron and I’ll show you an idiot. Lebron has a chance to go down as on of the top 2 or 3 to ever play the game.

    K.MARTIN>>>>>>>>>>>>>IVERSON.

  • Renato

@FoCo : People were saying the same stuff about Iverson (that he’d become one of the best to ever play). Bron only excels just like A.I. when he has an entire team playing for him. For god sake we had to basically resuscitate the point foward position for him: he hasn’t won anything yet apart for the same prizes A.I. also took home !!!

And by the way the Lakers A.I. faced in his finals were way stronger than the spurs who swept Bron !

Just another note: if Martin is that good how come that with him out the kings are 4-0??? Just for saying ..

Could we get the first(?) player to not be on any team currently, starting in Dallas for ASW? He should come an play in Australia though, he’ll get to play the whole game EVERY game…

  • http://fdjksl.com Jukai

Renato: Iverson, in his 13-year basketball career, has 71 playoff games under his belt.
Lebron James, in seven seasons, has 60 playoff games.
So, you know, depends how you judge success I guess.

I doubt AI is done. Waiving him let’s him get signed with somebody now. I believe AI was told he would start in Detroit and coach lied to him (Rip backed this story up). Coming to Memphis AI said he would come of the bench if he had a chance to compete for a starting role and got beat-out. It’s clear that AI is better than Conley and should have been starting. However, AI’s hamstring hampered him from competing for the role. I think AI should have waited before ‘leaving for personal reasons’ because as bad as the team is and with Conley starting over him, it was likely a matter of time before he would have started. I can see AI with the Cavs taking Delonte’s spot and starting with Mo. I can also see him getting some significant time as the pg of the second squad playing with AP, Andy, big Z etc. AI’s stock is certainly down, but I wouldn’t call him out yet.

  • Buschfire

Maybe he’ll start rapping again…. haha

  • peter

All I wanna know is, how did he go from scoring 27 a game in Denver to being out of the league in 1 season…is there any precedence of this for a player of his caliber in NBA history? Not making excuses for his attitude, but still, its pretty astounding…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Peter, no it isn’t…the dude straight up lied to the Memphis organization and fans, faked an injury to get out of finishing last season on the bench, and has had a TERRIBLE attitude for the majority of his career. His talent is undeniable, but his unwillingness to adapt and play for a team that doesn’t revolve around him is what is really astounding.

  • peter

Wayno, regardless of his attitude is there any precedence of such a rapid blackballing of a player who still has so much left in the tank physically??? There are countless examples of athletes with terrible attitudes getting second chances time and time again…

  • tavoris

wayno…so now he LIED to the Grizz too? His disdain for coming off the bench has been WELL DOCUMENTED, and I don’t remember him EVER wavering from that. He did say that he would come off the bench if he could COMPETE for at starting spot. However, Hollins made it clear from the jump that it wasn’t gonna happen, regardless of how sucky Conley is playing. So, where’s your evidence of him lying to the Grizz?

  • JD

Would a contender give Iverson the major burn he’s looking for?
    No.Never.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

So saying he’ll do whatever for the team blah blah blah, then quitting on them isn’t lying now? Wow Tavoris, why don’t you wait for the smoke to clear outta your moms basement before you say silly stuff like that.

  • tavoris
