SVG: Dwight Howard’s Getting Picked on

While the big fella whines on his blog, his coach is defending him to the media: “As for the refs, Stan Van Gundy said there was a bit of a double standard with the way fouls are called in the paint and on the perimeter. ‘I just think there’s two different standards,’ Van Gundy said. ‘I had a referee very recently, very candidly tell me because of the strength of the bigger guys they let them play more. So they get pushed and grabbed. My point is Lebron’s a pretty strong guy. Dwayne’s a strong guy, they dont’ let people bang on them … Little bit of a double standard. The league likes perimeter play.”‘

Shaq had the same problem his first few (dozen) years in the league

  • ball4life Posted: Nov.5 at 12:37 pm
He needs to start using his elbows. that will make guys not wanna even go near him

  • Z Posted: Nov.5 at 1:27 pm
Boo-hoo. It’s a man’s game on the block. Technically, there could be a foul called on every single post up.

  • ragz Posted: Nov.5 at 1:36 pm
thats not their point Z.. as big as he is and evidenced by the type of game he plays i doubt hes crying about the physicality inside… hes pissed about the fact that nothing gets called for him on one end and whenever he even touches some little 6 ft piece of crap flopping all over the place they blow the whistle on him… its about consistency not whining… i agree wit dwight

  • LexLuther Posted: Nov.5 at 1:38 pm
im sick of dwight whining like a little b*tch. hes bigger and stronger than any other big man in the league and none of them whine the way he does. shut up and play

  • neaorin Posted: Nov.5 at 1:45 pm
I’m confused – does “letting them play more” also mean “letting them getting away with elbowing and setting illegal screens every other time”?

  • Luke Posted: Nov.5 at 2:12 pm
    DWYANE

  • jdn41 Posted: Nov.5 at 2:13 pm
so dwight wants more calls so he can go to the free throw line more great just great lol

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.5 at 2:13 pm
Lex, you don’t see Duncan, Dirk, Shaq, Garnett, & Pau do the EXACT SAME THING when they get a crappy call? Not to mention the legion of perimeter players who don’t get the same freedom below the free-throw line.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Nov.5 at 2:18 pm
like tavoris said: it reminds me of Shaq in his best days. By the way, you guys can call it whining or whatever, both Van Gundy and Howard have a point. The Leaugue favors perimeter players, we all know that.

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Nov.5 at 2:21 pm
    Howard is soft.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.5 at 2:24 pm
funny that Lebron gets call that Howard wouldn’t, since he’s probably the strongest player in the L after Shaq and Howard.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.5 at 2:33 pm
tavoris, Shaq offensive-fouled his way passed every single call that could have been made against him. They weren’t out to get him–they just sat back and let him hack every one of his defenders. The offensive foul was like his most reliable post move on the Lakers! I’m not talking about his Orlando days, though.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.5 at 2:42 pm
Teddy, the Laker days (once he really became famous) were a direct reaction to his first few years in the league. Refs didn’t know how to officiate him, because he was so much bigger & stronger than they were used 2 seeing. Yao had those same troubles at first. Duncan had those same problems in international play.

  • knock knock Posted: Nov.5 at 3:37 pm
Dwight and Lebron james are 6’9 and 6’10. In fact i’d go as far to say lebron is bigger. The fact that in any game they play against each other dwight will get called on every foul, its crazy. See his blocks in the playoffs? See lebron averagin less than a foul during the reg season, but will go to the line 20 times during “close” games. Ref’s love me sum lebron.

  • 360vue Posted: Nov.5 at 4:21 pm
lets be very clear on this, dwight might be complaining, well he is, but he has every right to and is wholly in the right. obviously not all his personal decisions on whats a foul/what isn’t aren’t going to be right but thats natural; for a start the actions involve himself so he’s going to have a natural bias inclination and he can’t see the situation from a 3rd person perspective, which helps. however, he gets completely shafted by refs too often, not every game, because its not every ref, but too often for a professional league, infact, THE league. considering the likes of lebron james get a freeride when attacking the hoop, and dwight’s a similar size and stature, its hypocritical to give one a complete refereeing advantage in attack due to his physical attributes, and penalise the other on the D for being an identical stature. either penalise people like lebron more on the O (for charging etc), or give the stronger defenders the benefit of the doubt… some of the blocking fouls, and fouls on perfectly legit blocks (so what if he has a little afters, he gets the ball first, its not a no-contact sport…) called on dwight are ludicrous and shouldnt be made by someone getting paid. it is their sole job to get that stuff right and they can’t even be consistent between a few dozen people. sure such inconsitency could be said to create a certain air of randomnity and excitement, but more often than not its downright frustrating for players and fans alike.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.5 at 4:28 pm
    360vue…so true, dude

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Nov.5 at 4:45 pm
Maybe Howard is just Amare Stoudemire with a less surly disposition, ie having a media-inflated opinion of his current SKILL level.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.5 at 4:46 pm
Howard may want to work on that free throw percentage before Van Gundy pines for him to get to the line more often.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.5 at 4:57 pm
TADOne…very true. But I think it’s more that the fouls that aren’t called are preventing him from playing HIS game. Maybe he feels his “offensive limitations” are because he’s being fouled excessively.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.5 at 4:58 pm
but SVG is puzzling, because he doesn’t want the Magic to throw the ball down there anyway. 3′s for everybody!!!

  • Sesa Posted: Nov.5 at 5:04 pm
so does Shaq, Yao and Timmy

  • Anton Posted: Nov.5 at 5:06 pm
    Another day in Waahhrlando, Florida.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.5 at 5:12 pm
If Dwight could actually score in the paint, when he cant just dunk the ball, the fouls wouldn’t matter. Its not like he’d make the extra FTs anyway…

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Nov.5 at 5:36 pm
360vue has said it all. Basically what we (as NBA fans) want (hopefully), is some consistency amongst the refs, the calls.

  • Michael Scorn Posted: Nov.5 at 6:30 pm
Trade Dwight for more guards then. Problem solved.

  • iLL wiLL Posted: Nov.5 at 6:51 pm
Child please. Dwight needs to man up and just play ball.

  • NBA kid Posted: Nov.5 at 7:38 pm
if you guys actually watched the pistons and suns games against the magic, it’s pretty obvious that Dwight was not getting good calls. big guy has a point, if any little guard even touches Dwight, it’s a foul on superman, meaning his help defense is limited to jumping up and goaltending

  • Donald Royal Posted: Nov.5 at 7:44 pm
Dwight maybe stronger than most guys, but i think what they are complaining about is the non-basketball fouls that players do when he gets the hoop, the ones where they just grab him instead of makin a play on the ball. case in point the chris bosh shoulder grab earlier this year. Jus cuz he stronger, doesnt mean he should get calls that everyone else gets. “If you prick us, do we not bleed?”

  • RedRum Posted: Nov.5 at 7:58 pm
The problem with Dwight is that he has no footwork and post moves, so the only way he can get to the bucket is by pushing. Well… if you push big boy, you are going to get pushed back!! I never heard Duncan whining that he being pushed and hit, and he has been playing down there for 13 years now…

  • la huey Posted: Nov.5 at 8:44 pm
    svg’s right, guys.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.5 at 9:17 pm
redrum…I stan for TimmyD, and i can tell you he whines to the refs ALL THE TIME.

  • Aussie Boy Posted: Nov.5 at 10:06 pm
360vue is right…. but howard does need to work on offence and the refs need to let the big guys play some help D on the littlies

  • Joe King Posted: Nov.5 at 10:20 pm
    D-W-Y-A-N-E

  • dma Posted: Nov.6 at 2:30 am
Dwight fouled out against Detroit’s big men in 17 minutes. Really? When did Ben Wallace and the Legendary Kwame Brown start getting calls? Oh and his backup Gortat fouled out in 22 minutes in same game.

  • vic21 Posted: Nov.6 at 3:15 am
Refereeing in this league sucks. This used to be a man’s game.

  • RedRum Posted: Nov.6 at 5:35 am
tavoris, TD whines IN the game, not getting his coach to whine in press conference… I don’t think Pop ever complained about TD. TD has 200 different ways to get to the cup, Dwight only one… dribble, push, dunk. Well, such plays draw contact and create contact, hence every time he gets the ball, in strict officiating terms, he either fouls or gets fouled. It was the same with Shaq. Now.. the refs either call everything, or give him some slack and allow him to play, which they do. Problem is that SVJ and DH want more than that…

  • Rikson Posted: Nov.6 at 7:12 am
Whats wrong with pushing? Thats how posting up works… What happend to the game I loved sooo much?!

  • ENDS Posted: Nov.6 at 7:37 am
Two things. Dwight is complaining about the hacks he’s getting that are cheap shots. Rodney stuckey grabbing and pulling his arm. Almost dislocating the Damn thing. Yet he turns his back, makes his offensive move, or spins toward the basket his opponent falls like he got picked off by q sniper and the automatically call that offensive. 6 offensive fouls on him and Gortat in the last 3min in Mowtown; that’s absurd.

  • ENDS Posted: Nov.6 at 9:48 am
    Plus ANton your WHAAAAACK

  • Rashard Lewis Posted: Nov.6 at 3:03 pm
The real issue is as ENDS said. Dwight is big and strong, but the current officiating runs the risk of him being physically damaged. Bosh’s bear hug and Stuckey’s yank should have been flagrant fouls. Ref’s blow calls all the time and Dwight will get more than his share of bad calls because of his aggressive play on the defensive side. SVG just wants to make sure that illegal hard fouls are called and that Dwight does not get damaged for life.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.6 at 3:16 pm
redrum, Pop doesn’t have to whine in press, because he’s universally respected. He does his thing during timeouts. SVG went to press because he takes EVERYTHING to press.
