Will The Answer Land in New York?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

From the moment he became an unrestricted free agent this past summer, the ideal situation for Allen Iverson has always been New York. Big city, all eyes on him, the ball in his hands, and a coach who (theoretically) can bring out the best — or, at least, what remains of it — in The Answer.

Last night, Donnie Walsh confirmed his franchise’s interest in bringing Iverson to MSG. For a 1-9 team (the worst start in team history) going nowhere fast, this could be the jolt they desperately need.

From the NY Daily News:

Can Allen Iverson save the Knicks’ season, rescue them at the box office or at least make them relevant again?

Donnie Walsh will spend the next 48 hours debating what impact, both negative and positive, Iverson could have on the organization. Walsh, the Knicks’ president, confirmed Monday night that the club will explore the possibility of signing Iverson, the former league MVP who was placed on waivers yesterday by the Memphis Grizzlies. “We’ll look into it,” Walsh told the Daily News. “Right now, I’d say probably not but we’ll see.”

The Knicks are obviously a disaster, so why not take a chance on A.I? If he doesn’t work out in Gotham, it’s not like things could actually get any worse for the Knickerbockers. Rock bottom has already been reached; there’s nowhere else to go for this franchise but up.

There are understandable concerns about this move possibly stunting the growth of Danilo Gallinari and Toney Douglas, but I’d argue that playing alongside Chris Duhon is infinitely more damaging to their development.

Assuming they don’t make the mistake of asking him to come off the bench, Allen Iverson — whose manager says he’d love to play for Mike D’Antoni — could help New York regain some semblance of respectability. And even if he doesn’t, at least the product will be entertaining.

Which is a lot more than what you can say about the current Knicks.

There are reasons to sign Iverson and there are reasons not to sign him. Neither position is overwhemingly the best decision…
That said, why would it be interesting to watch the New York media “savage” Iverson? I don’t see the appeal in that one.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Can I be real for a second? All I reallt want some Orange and blue Questions.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/pennyccw OG

in 2008 he Dropped 51 points on Kobe season avg 26ppg & 7 apg shooting 45 percent, in 09 he Played less minutes, took 14 shots per game & was labelled as washed up. He ditched practice every now & then, we call in sick at work too Big Deal, despite that Denver had to Add 4 more players ‘Nene, Chauncy,Dontay Jones & Birdman’ just to win 4 more games, Losing to the Lakers again for the 3rd year in a row, sport writers Know this circumstantial trick & shamelessly exploit it. Larry Brown has been campaigning on his behalf & in Denver he was a model citizen & a locker room favourite, No Cancer, No chemistry Killer His Starting Point gaurd Anthony Carter, is now a back up, point is AI Got Denver to 50 wins with much less Talent than Chauncey who Got them to 54 wins, see the Light People.

  • danglez

Co-sign OG. AI has plenty of gas left in the tank to make a difference in a game.

  • GodSaveTheKnicks

Normally I would say that we need to play the young guys and if we lose..great..John Wall is one and done baby!

Now..I just cry everywhere..in the shower…at my desk at work..while eating.

I knew it was going to be a long season but damn…every point Jennings scores is like a stab in my heart.

Contracts come off the books after this season and the next.

  • Stargazey

How much worse can get it, really? Sign him, play him in a combo back court with Toney Douglas and let him end his career on a high note. One of the greatest scorers in history leaving after being kicked out of three teams in a row is not how AI should end it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com B-zog

    OK EVERYONE IVERSON IS DONE!!!!!!!!

  • http://allanzuss@yahoo.com Mendel

    OG is the MAN!!!!!

  • MattM

I’m loving Russ coming out with both guns blazing. The Knicks have good young players that they need to let play. Toney Douglas is for real. He was eating up NBA level guards like Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington. This is from a hardcore UNC fan by the way.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Just think about it this way, Knick fans, you can’t go back and draft Brandon Jennings, but you can get the 2026 version at a discounted rate!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/pennyccw OG

Question can chaucey Get nuggets to 50 wins in with a
    backcourt partner Anthony Carter,
front court melo, Kenyon & Camby
I think not…The only reason nuggets even won 2 games against the Lakers instead of getting swept is because

They had Kobe stopper/tripper, Dantay Jones Guarding KB instead of Kenyon getting torched trying to stay with Kobe. & they also Had Birdman + Nene to Check Odom & Gasol not to mention block shots & Grab Boards, Birdman is sick.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Billups >>>>> AI OG…it’s clear to see that that team is WAY better with him as the leader. If you don’t see it the only light you’re seeing is the train that’s about to run over you.

  • JD

Now Knikcs they’re is one thing you should do with AI first, MAKE SURE HE KNOWS THAT HE’S STARTING OR COMIG OFF THE BENCH!

  • tavoris

wayno, a more accurate comparison would be
    Billups+Anthony+Nene+Martin+Smith+Birdman+Carter+Kleiza >> Iverson+Anthony+Atkins+Carter+Kleiza+Smith+Camby.

    notice the difference?

  • tavoris

Nene, Martin, and Birdman >>> Marcus Camby (in case you have to look 2 hard)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Tavoris
    You’re wasting your time.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/pennyccw OG

@ Wayno They were better even before the Trade. in the Pre-season they had made a decision to focus on Defence that year. The are only a slower paced team thats all.

In the 08 playoffs when Melo went cold AI carried the Team.

Do you really believe that the Lakers could’ve stop a Nuggets team where they have to either Double Ai or Melo
+ having Nene man handling Gasol in the Middle, + Birdman having his block parties after all that JR torching Sasha & the Lakers bench AI on Nuggets in 09 equal Finals or Championship, call me deluded too
Camby is a good Help defender but not so good on 1 on 1
situations & ai is an underated passer his 7 apg is more than what billups avg. The difference billups look to create more for others. Ai by creating for himself creates opening for others
“last year wash up detroit AI” dropped 27 on Memphis
abusing whomever they placed on him, they should’ve started him.
He had 38 points against Deron williams too
This year washed up AI in his 2nd game in Months had 18 points & 7 assist in 27 mins
He is No more Bench Player than is Kobe or Lebron

  • doyouwantmore

You know what would be DOPE? Iverson should buy some cheap Ukrainian team like Azovmash or Zalgiris or something. Then he could take as many shots as he wanted and slay the Euro league.

  • freezy85

    props to OG

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

If AI could ever subject his ego to a 6th man role, he could be the Jamal Crawford or Manu Ginobili of that team. Hence, we know that answer to that (no pun intended).

  • lakeshowfail

Dimitris needs to STFU. But anyway, I think this is a BAAAAD idea. Same drama bullcrap as Detroit and Memphis and everywhere else. Pretend to be all happy with your team, then get pouty when coach doesn’t play you for 40 minutes.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariq

I wish I could adopt AI.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i can’t believe i just read someone saying Iverson is not worse then Billups. and BTW iverson averaged more assists then billups because he played 86% of denvers minuts, compared to 67% for billups. And PER Minute – Billups averages more Assists and Less Turnovers. Billups >> Iverson = Common Sense. If you still don’t see it ask yourself this, over the last 7 years how many Conference Finals has Iverson been to? Then check out the course of NBA history, how many times one guy has been to 7 straight conference finals. Billups = Winner / Iverson = Whiner….see the difference

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

nbk: Its actually not even worth arguing against some of the people on here. Like, surely ‘OG’ is trolling. Its that stupid. Do these guys even watch the damn games?

  • vic21

lol, They just got rid of Marbury and now they wanna get AI. It’s like getting rid of cancer and trying to get sick again. Are you stupid NY?

  • ktokyo

I can’t wait until Iverson starts live video-blogging. You know that’s the next step!

  • Shem

WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT? they want cap for 2010

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/pennyccw OG

Nope not trolling, Just stating the facts I Know , Calling me a troll do not changes the Facts.
@nbk you made a good point regarding the minutes & Assist ratio i did not know that, conversely AI gives more points per minutes.so it cancels out. Billups is definitely a Winner & a better mentor or coach than AI 7 straight conf finals appearance is Good. To answer that question in all fairness I’d have to ask when did AI have 3 fellow all stars to play along side him as billups did, Never only during allstar Games, during which I’m sure he has a better Assist per minute rate than Billups, He’s throws the sickes alleys to Vince & who ever it is on his teams & doesn’t play selfish. Point is he passes when he has options he trust

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Okay, people are getting this situation all wrong, and I don’t think Iverson has articulated his thoughts in the right way, but here’s the deal: Its not about who freaking starts, its about the MINUTES PLAYED. In both Detroit and Memphis, not only was he stuck on the bench, they only let him play EIGHTEEN MINUTES A GAME. That is way too low for a player of his caliber, and he deserves to be on the floor at the ends of games–something these teams simply don’t get.
Do you really think Iverson would be complaining if he was getting the 35 minutes per game and the CLOSER ROLE that Manu Ginobli and Jason Terry have?! Obviously not. Again, he hasn’t articulated his opinion clear enough (ie. complaining about not starting), but let’s be real: the MINUTES are what count. If the coaches of Memphis/Detroit were to up his minutes, he would probably have no problem with coming off the bench.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariq

    Good point, Teddy.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

@Teddy-the-bear: Iverson had not played in the preseason and had also missed the Grizzlies’ opening few games. There was nothing unreasonable about the PT he was getting in his FIRST THREE GAMES: 18 mins, then 28 and then 21. He quit. Again.

  • ab_40

a point guard with an attitude who wears or has worn number three… where have we seen this before… stephon marbury, steve francis and now AI. Jerome James is excited I’ll tell you that.

  • Jason

Bring him in for a 1-year experiment to bring up ticket sales, it would not hurt at all based on what they are expecting for the season. If he plays well then maybe there is a chance a contract oculd be signed that wouldn’t affect next year’s FAs. If he plays bad then cut him or don’t re-sign. Based on where they are at now it almost doesn’t matter what they do. Him stealing shots from guys that aren’t going to make them anyway is not going to crush the team. Playing behind a go-to veteran may even give some of the other younger players like Gal confidence and by default fit them into roles that they are better suited for.
I haven’t been watching the Knicks too much this year but you don’t really need to. I paid attention for a little bit after Isiah was gone and then this year to see how the paper-thin roster would work out, but its no different than before and its not supposed to be until next year. A 1 year AI signing would add excitement to a season that is sure to seem like an eternity to the way-passed-disgruntled NY fandom. Even if things don’t turn out so well, how much else is there to talk about regarding the next ‘cept “I HOPE THEY GET LEBS AND WADE AT THE SAME TIME AND MAYBE TRADE FOR DIRK AND CHEEP TOO” or whatever it is these days.

  • http://worldstar@gmail.com SANE ONE

I LOVE ALL OF THE GENIUS FORTUNE TELLeRS WHO JUST KNOW THAT LEBRON IS NOT COMING TO NY. WACK ASS WANKSTERS YOU ARE HOPING HE DOESN’T COME TO NEW YORK. STOP THE PROPAGANDA. YOU KNOW NOTHING. YOU MIGHT AS WELL BE JERKING OFF.

  • Jason

People have just been waiting to stone and crucify this guy for some reason forever, wanting to call him washed up before he is and all that is lame. Sure, he may not be the fit that most teams are looking for, and has some issues every now and then (according to some), but if the stuff is true about him wanting to play for D’Antoni then this could work out fine. The last time it is even fair to look at when considering his current talent is back in Denver. If he played like that for NY they might even win 25 games. Also, the ticket/jersey sales thing is huge, as that is what keeps the lights on. They have almost nobody for that now ‘cept circus-Nate. From a purist and idealistic perspective tix/jerseys are not what you think about, but you’ve got to be kidding me if you think the NY owners don’t care about that type of thing when operating a business. Perfect fit. All the controversy will be expected in NY anyway. I can already see an entire IMax…I mean Around-the-Horn show dedicated to this with Mariotti spitting all over the screen and Woody Paige making some sort of rap joke involving one of those guy’s you hear on your grandma’s station these days.

People have just been waiting to stone and crucify this guy for some reason forever, wanting to call him washed up before he is and all that is lame. Despite the vocal haters, he still probably has one of the biggest fanbases wordwide. He’s a main face in the league and him succeeding is good for the game. These crash and burn stories are depressing and never good for anybody except a hater that will focus on something else in 5 mintues. Sure, he may not be the fit that most teams are looking for, and has some issues every now and then (according to some), but if the stuff is true about him wanting to play for D’Antoni then this could work out fine. i’d like the knicks to give the starting pg job to nate. just throw him out there and see what he does with it. maybe the added responsibility of being the starting pg would take the recklessness out of his game. let’s face it, 5’9 shooting guards that aren’t even stone cold shooters are going out of style, to say the least. if he fails then you know for sure. some would say that he’s already a failure as a PRODUCTIVE basketball player but oh well. it’s chris freaking duhon running the show. he’s been sucking major balls ever since durham.

Michael NZ, if you really think its reasonable to give 18 and 21 minutes a game for Iverson, while he sits on the bench watching MIKE CONLEY close out games, then I don’t know what to tell you. Come on now.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

Teddy: I think it was perfectly reasonable given the time he had missed in the leadup to his first game. He just threw in the towel. Gave up. Quit.

  • J

i still think the best team for iverson is the bobcats. even if they added Jax, it is still the perfect situation for A.I.. He will get the ball, the starting role, the minutes, everything plus Larry Brown.

  • giogolo

    @Oliver 10:09
I think ur d only ! in the Phil. who thinks like that.

  • http://fdjklf.com Jukai

Giving Iverson minutes would not stunt Tony Douglas. Just get rid of Duhon. Problem solved.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Actually, Duhon is a pretty good player to have around. The Knicks could just trade Larry Hughes and Iverson could play the 2 spot. I’ve been saying now Duhon could be the New York Eric Snow.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Hughes is perfect to play with Iverson….he plays solid defense on almost every guard no matter their size, and can play the 1 or 2 depending on iversons mood….Duhon, is a mediocre point guard on his best day

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Wait, I forgot Hughes played with Iverson in Philly.

  • http://www.gmail.com melorush

man i dont care which team iverson goes to but i want to see him play as soon as possible!
i really dont want to see his career ending on a sour note…..damn it!
he’s scored 27,000 points…he better go to a team that respect’s him and his experience..and for all the people who compare iverson to billups are way off the mark..billups had the support of ben
    wallace,rasheed wallace,richard hamilton,tayshawn…what did iverson have?broken mutombo??!!
    go iverson….35 mpg-22.9 ppg-3.9 rpg-6.6 apg!

  • http://fdjklf.com Jukai

Teddy: Er, Hughes has been twice the player Duhon has been this season. Duhon has been pretty terrible, and has to go.

  • J

melorush: i want to see him play too. but i want him to play on a team that would really fit him and his style of play. i dont want him to bump into another mamphis/detroit situation. cause we dont know, the next team he might suit up might be his last. and i really dont see many people comparing him to billups. they are very different players to start anyway.
