Allen Iverson Has an Old Man’s Injury

With Lou Williams set to take his place in the starting lineup tonight, A.I. knows the clock is ticking: “Allen Iverson has been diagnosed with arthritis in his left knee. He knows what it is, he knows the way the 76ers will want to treat it, and he knows how it feels. But only one word popped into the 34-year-old’s head when he heard the diagnosis. Old. ‘That was the worst part of the whole thing,’ Iverson said with a laugh yesterday after he watched the team practice at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. ‘You could have said anything but arthritis. I mean, that sounds so old. But it’s something that I’ve got to deal with and that’s what it is.”‘

You know you’re old when you have arthritis…

Several NBA players have played through arthritis. I believe the way they did it was by playing less minutes, taking care of their bodies and playing off the bench if necessary. Hmmm. I wonder if A.I. will be open to that? I have a vague flicker of a memory about Iverson having some sort of issue with coming off the bench. I’m not sure if I’m remembering it correctly though. It was barely talked about.

“This is it…” in the words of Mike Jackson. This is and should be A.I.’s last tour around the NBA… He will probably be in and out of the starting line up for the remainder of the year w/ eddie liking to change Starting Lineups so frequently… But, if u think about it w/ Brand and Speights commin off the pine, throw in Willie and AI plus Carney or Kapono, you have a decent second unit…. All is not lost for the Sixers Season… AI adds depth the 76ers needed… Either in the Starting Lineup or commin off the bench; his addition helped the 76ers…

Wasn’t Jonathan Bender diagnosed with arthritis when he was 24 or 25? He’s hitting shots for NYK.

  • Michael Scorn

Well that lasted long, and Iverson was supposed to be the veteran help that the Cavs should have went after according to some people on ESPN.

Being an NBA annalyst has got to be the greatest job. You never have to be right about anything. The only way to lose your job is by saying something racist or sexist. Well, you just get suspended two weeks for that.

lol @ michael, it is true tho… ESPN is trash 90% of the time with their pointless stats and analysis… only watch actual games on there….

Has AI ever come back from an injury that requires rehab? Cause rehab is kinda like the practice of life.

Hussman, you’re more optimistic than I am. This team is atrocious, mainly due to the “coaching”. The only keepers on this team are Holiday, Lou Will, Thad, and Speights(maybe Willie as the 1st or 2nd guard off the bench, nothing more and because his salary isn’t a Billy King salary). I’d say Brand too, but Jordan’s played so many mind games with him, I think he’s all messed up and doesn’t even care to be here anymore.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

what fat lever?? Iguodala is not a keeper?? you joking right??

  • Young C

First of all, Willie Green actually is a Billy King salary. The only reason he’s still on the team is because King gave him like a 6 year contract after coming back from ACL surgery and no other team want to trade for him. Second, you think Willie is a keeper but Iguodala is not?

  • hillbilly

    He needs a Synvisc injection…STAT!

  • giogolo

A dumb comment in here bout Iggy not a keeper.

The fact that Ivey said that it sounds jus soonds old, in turn makes me feel old. thats gonna b me in 6 years…ugh.

is that the real Fat Lever? lol

  • Fat Lever

Yes, I know Willie is a BK salary, but he’s not a true BK salary. He’s “only” making $3.7, which is pretty good for an effective 7th man on an NBA team. Secondly, anyone that watches the Sixers knows Iguodala is the 3rd best player on a true contending team, however at the salary he is making, he’s getting paid and will continue to get paid like a #2, low tier #1(as his contract nears the end). He is a good player, but he plays the same position as Thad, and honestly, I’ve seen enough of Iguodala the last 5 years to know he’s a pseudo-franchise player. He still can’t take anyone off the dribble to the hole. Tell me how many times he tries to beat his man with the dribble and pulls up for a ridiculous fadeaway that clangs iron. He does many things well, but not well enough to be the #1 or even #2 option on a true playoff team. This team needs to be blown up and built around the true young core of Holiday, Lou, Speights, and Thad, with a top 5 pick thrown in there. I’ve had enough of the current make-up of 35-42 wins and a first round bounce.

@Fat Lever: (love the name too…) I def am optimistic: I love that franchise! Everytime I see that logo I remember the good old days! ur comment: “I’ve seen enough of Iguodala the last 5 years to know he’s a pseudo-franchise player.” I couldn’t agree more! Id trade him NOW! He will forever be Robin (or even Alfred!) to ANYONE ELSE’S Batman! Brand def wants out… Ran for the money; he should have thought twice… him and Corey Maggette too (see what playing @ Duke will do to you… LOL j/k). I too agree they need to just Salary dump and start over; young pieces are there and if we could get a top-5 pick this will definately help (lets just pray the Jazz do not get NY’s pick this year… if so; Im jumping on the Jazz bandwagon ASAP! Wall and D-Wills in the same backcourt… WOOOOOOOWWWWWW!)

  • Hussman25

Yeah I said the Jazz could get NY’s pick this year if they fall in the top 3 (or five I have to re-read the article on ESPN.com that discussed this) Boy wouldn’t NY love to have Wall there…

  • robb

We knew AI was old before this. The arthritis just confirms it. But the guy’s heart is big. He’ll keep going.

  • str8 from samoa

    AI is a soldier!!!

  • rikson

The headline should be: Allen Iverson is an old man and has an injury
