Arenas Keeps Kicks, Guns in Locker

There must be something in the D.C. air. A few months after Delonte West had some firearm issues in the nation’s capital, Gilbert Arenas finds himself subject to a gun-related investigation by the NBA.

As first reported by cbssports.com and later expounded on by the Washington Times:

“…Gilbert Arenas stored firearms in a locked container in his locker, unloaded and without ammunition,” the Wizards’ statement read. “The Wizards organization and Arenas promptly notified the local authorities and the NBA and are cooperating fully with law enforcement during its review of this matter and will have no further comment at this time.”

In a phone interview with The Washington Times, Arenas said he had guns at his home, but following the Dec. 9 birth of his third child, daughter Hamiley Penny, he decided he didn’t want the weapons anywhere his children could get to them. So on Dec. 10, Arenas brought them to Verizon Center, where he stored them in his lockbox until he could figure out what to do with them. A week later, he turned the guns over to team security and asked that they be turned over to the D.C. police.

“I wouldn’t have brought them to D.C. had I known the rules,” Arenas said. “After my daughter was born, I was just like, I don’t need these anymore. I don’t want them around the kids. We are working with the league and the authorities.”

Arenas does not face any criminal charges in the incident.

Ben, it is news, just maybe not “bad” news when see in that context.

What a total waste of time. Arenas took very reasonable precautions and was ridding himself of the guns. He should be held as a model rather than being charged with anything.

I don’t understand why “the authorities” have been notified? Is it illegal to have guns in sporting facility in DC?

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Dec.25 at 12:44 pm
Dave, you are not allowed to have guns in NBA training facilities/team planes/etc. That being said, I don’t think Gil was trying to do anything wrong, guns were unloaded without ammo and he turned them over to be handed in to police. Hopefully it gets sorted out soon.

  • Holy Baller Posted: Dec.25 at 12:50 pm
Why would he put them in his freakin locker though? I mean how many other places could he have stored them? It just seems stupid to me.

  • MeloMan2.0 Posted: Dec.25 at 1:45 pm
