Colangelo: Give Fans Hall of Fame Vote

I don’t know, Jerry, these are the same people who could end up making Tracy McGrady a starter in the All-Star Game this season. Are we sure they deserve a say in the Hall of Fame nomination process?: “The James Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame induction process has long been one of the most secretive and exclusive of all the major sports shrines. Jerry Colangelo, Naismith’s newly elected chairman of the board, is looking to change that. His plan includes having both fans and the media involved in the selection process. ‘Nothing is etched in concrete at this point,’ Colangelo said. ‘I have to get my board to agree with me. I just believe it’s the right thing to do and when you believe that and you’re passionate about it, you usually can get something done.’ Next up would be to look at individuals who are not in the Hall and whose eligibility to gain entrance has expired. ABA stars Artis Gilmore and Mel Daniels were among the names he mentioned, but he added, ‘There are no shortage of individuals to reconsider. And here’s the kicker: I want the media to be involved and the fans to participate.”‘

i’d agree to this if this is what it takes to get the a-train in

  • tmw554

not sure rodman would get in through the normal process either

There should be a knowledge test one must pass in order to vote in the all-star starters. Try that before we go the hall of fame. We’d end up with rookies who threw down a big dunk in the hall of fame.

  • tavoris

how about changing the HOF voting commission regularly? Fans would vote every smiling NBA player in the HOF.

  • http://gmail Dirty Frank

    Good idea Travoris.

  • ClydeSays

TMac getting 200k All Star votes is a great example of how much *the average basketball fan knows.

*The average basketball fan either cares little about the game or, these players are being voted in by whatever hacker Adidas or Nike hired to boost their athletes.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

@clydesays cosign that. Yao would be a HOF lock if fan voting were allowed. Then there would be more griping than ever about how flawed the HOF is.

  • rav

so they may as well prep for yi jianlian’s HOF day now then…

Just make the voting process more transparent and not so secretive with the voters.

  • JD

Fans R involved in way 2 much, All star voting should B da only thing, next they’ll get the fans voting 4 the NBA Champion

  • http://www xiaonan

as the first couple sentences said, Tracy even could be voted as an all star, who can trust fans to be voters?

Terrible idea. Imagine having Eboy/Jukaitavoris/Hursty/360′s vote worth the same as Havlichek’s vote…(brilliant).. i think that this is just a plot to get Allen “Kournikova of bbasketball” Iverson to the hall..!!!!!!!!
    @xiaonan…:ni shi zhongguoren ma?

your chinese is so well just for learing 4 years. that is awesome. My email wxn8822@hotmail.com. glad to meet u.

  • Mr. Fan

as long as you don’t allow Chinese fans to vote..we all know Chinese fans give a bad name to basketball fans since they are the ones voting for T-Mac or Yi (last year) to play in the ASG.

  • MikeC.

This sounds like a terrible idea. For the most part, fans are idiots. We had Zo and Grant Hill voted in as starters one year, and that year, neither one had played a game. We have T-Mac on track to start in the ASG this year, based on fan votes. As Ed Lover would say, “C’mon son!!” No way fans should vote for the HOF. There should be an NBA Hall of Fame as well. Yao probably does deserve a Hall of Fame nod based on what he’s meant to popularizing the game in Asia. He is an icon, even though he hasn’t been able to stop breaking his feet. What Yao has done transcends the actual game. People make the HOF as contributors, not just as players. Which is why there should be an NBA Hall.

  • MikeC.

Jerry C is usually on point. This must have been him just musing and throwing around ideas and somebody took it way too seriously.

  • MikeC.

As real basketball fans, we need to do something ridiculous to show the NBA that fan balloting is just a popularity contest, and not an actual gauge of basketball talent. If All Star voting was based on production, why is Chris Kaman not even on the ballot? We should all cast write-in votes for Darko.

Teddy: it’s not very hard when you can use an online translator. Even a kid like Spanny can be multi-lingual.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS

@Jukaitavoris and the rest of the kindergarden…..:a kid like Spanny will be(90%) next September for 2 weeks at the world basketball championship, celebrating the last performances on the biggest world stage from Diamantidis,Ginobili,Papaloukas,Novitski,Siskauskas,Kobe. At the same time the same kid will give courses of real basketball (don’t bring your playstation with you) to all the fantasy players on this forum in a nice court near Vosporus in Instabul. You will also have the opportunity to test my proficiency on the afforementioned 4 languages….i am waiting(i am mostly curious to see if you can drible the ball, i am not learning languages to show-off in front of infants, i am using dunking to do this.)

  • Yesse

Well yes it’s a good idea for smart fans, but how could they develop a filter, that would say who is a smart fan and who isnt?So im gonna say no, because of that.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS

    @Yesse…….:use I.Q tests!!!!!!!!!!

  • youngmuggsy

It’d be hilarious if fans got the vote. Nate Robinson HOF class of ’23.

  • tavoris

Greek dude, why are you bringing me up? In case you cannot read english, I said that it was a BAD idea (just like you).

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

just leave voting to the ‘professionals’ and that goes for ASW too…

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Spanny: ‘Real’ basketball players sure have a lot of trouble not sucking in the fantasy league (IE Delfino)

  • Dacre

I’m Dacre, a basketball fan from Australia and a huge SLAMonline fan.
I had it brought to my attention by ‘Jukai’ on Slamonline.com that I may have put my foot in my mouth with a rather thoughtless post regarding a “mock chinese” allstar voting ballet and I wanted to apologise to all readers along with the staff that contribute to the online material.
Along with the many fans that pass through the site from day to day, particularly those that those this post directly offended. If it is appropiate to leave off from commenting on the site, if not for some time then indefinitely I can do that for the benefit
of the greater good. I am totally sorry and completely seek the forgiveness of all offended.
