D-Wade: Not Good Enough, Right Now

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Want to know just how great of a basketball player Dwyane Wade is? Or more precisely, how great Wade is expected to be night in and night out? Dude is averaging a shade under 27 points, 5 boards and 6 assists per game. Those numbers are considered a disappointment.

That’s how high D-Wade has set the bar (and expectations).

Prior to last night’s win against Orlando, Miami Heat president critiqued his superstar’s game, citing possible issues with Dwyane’s conditioning as reason for the drop-off in efficiency from last season.

The Miami Herald reports:

Riley said Wednesday the team plans to address some concerns about Dwyane Wade’s conditioning that might be a factor in the guard’s drop-off in production from last season.

“He’s not there right now,” Riley said. “So I get out of my president’s chair and into my coaching chair — I know he’ll probably say I’m nitpicking. His efficiency is down. We’ll address what it is we can do to help you maintain that lean, mean scoring machine you were a year ago.”

Dwyane Wade, who’s shooting an unsightly 43% from the field, says his legs aren’t quite there yet. This is understandably a letdown for the team (which is also struggling), after experiencing the best season of Wade’s career, in which he led the NBA in scoring.

As far as Stan Van Gundy is concerned, though, this is all much ado about nothing. SVG maintains that D-Wade’s numbers by season’s end will be spectacular as always. He may be right, but for now, Wade’s employer and the fans are unhappy.

The life of a superstar.

i always thought d wade was always ready to go.
    maybe i was wrong

Mutoni, I’m curious……where did you get your knowledge that Heat fans are disapointed with the play of Dwyane? The only person I know of that has a gripe with his play is Riley. The team may be inconsistent, and Dwyane’s level pf play has not yet matched last season’s, but there’s still 60 games or so to go so………….

Come on man ! That’s just silly. What about everyone else on that team. I mean if the other guys were truly steppin’ up their game, this is something that nobody will notice. And to be true I didn’t even notice it. Plus D-Wade is a true competitor you know he will pick it up somewhere down the road. Let the guy breathe !

    Suuuperstar.

  • Tombomb

The only one who should feel he can do better is D-Wade and thats only because he is a competitor, his legs probably are tired…..Beasley and the rest of the Heat are pretty heavy things to carry!!!!

  • http://Vikturus Vikturus

Beasley had back to back beasty games though!

  • ClydeSays

Hey Riles, how about surrounding your superstar will some able bodied vets? A broken down JO, draft picks and some role players aren’t going to do it.

Heat (like a lot of teams) need a defensive presence and playmaking PG to take some pressure off Wade.

When you’re a superstar who commands/expects max cap salary, the fans, coaches, teammates etc, have every right to expect maximum performance out of you. There is no excuse for him not to be in game shape – he should have conditioned during the off-season like he did previously. I’m glad he recognizes he’s not in the shape he’s in and hopefully that means he’ll actively address it. I don’t think anybody would say he’s playing poorly, however he’s clearly not playing as well as people expected and although the expectations are extremely high, they are not unreasonable.

  • Float_world

I suspect a shade below Tiger’s epic controversy to hit D Wade soon. He’s a serial party guy who goes out EVERY night of the week whether on the road or at home. Remember where you heard it first….

  • cramzy

@eboy—On the Heat forum, I swear every game, fans are starting threads like “Dwade doesn’t care anymore” or “What the hell is wrong with Dwade”. I watch the Heat religiously, and I gotta admit there are times when Dwade mails it in. I still remember that play where he basically walked to the free throw line and hunched over with his hands on his knees….as Kobe drived to hoop. A lot of times its frustration. He’ll get it together. Its hard to talk down on someone that’s carrying their team night in and night out. Get the guy some help.

Eboy: It’s been pretty up and down for wade this year. he’s had a couple of slumps that stretched for 3-4 games at a time, which is uncharacteristic. I think you’re right though: he’ll be fine

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Wade probably won’t be satisfied til he averages 30, 10 and 10. But it won’t happen. Ah wells. At least Beasley has been stepping up!

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Eboy: Yeah man, I’ve been hearing a lot of “Wade’s been a disappointment this season,” I don’t know where you’ve been.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I had a long post disapper so I’m not writing it out again…..but I’ll just say I’m not disappointed, just waiting for more.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

People who are ‘cringing’ right now about Wade’s numbers are just stupid. They’re folks who don’t understand the game and the pace veteran players have to set to be prepared for later in the season when placement in the playoffs is important. Plus, don’t forget that last season Dwyane was already in mid-season form because of his (and LeBron’s, Kobe’s Carmelo’s) involvement in that summer’s Olympics. Folks in the know aren’t worried.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    ^ Yeah…what she said….plus some I don’t feel like typing.

  • barack O

    presidents shouldnt be black!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dirk

Trade him to the Lakers for Vujacic and Walton since Riley’s upset with him.

  • LA Huey

Where are all the anti-Lebron people with their “He-sucks-because-he’s-not-doing-it-all rhetoric”? Anyways, Wade is having to do too much right now. Hopefully, Beasley will be able to consistently share the scoring burden and Chalmers will continue to improve into a reliable point guard.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

He’ll be alright. Miami will still be fighting for the 6-7 spot in the east but he’ll be alright. D-Wade needs to have Ms Union play nurse.

  • TMT

Ship him to chicago for Tyrus and Noah. Chicago gets his rights and everyone is happy expect Miami which will have no playing tome for forwards.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

I admire and sort of feel sorry for DWade more than any other player. The guy is putting miles on his body pretty fast and it seems like Pat Riley is really kind of okay with that.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan2.0

all the peole hating on Beasley last year can suck it

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

He’ll be fine. Next year, when Derrick Rose can help lighten the load.

  • http://www.sixers.com, 360vue

From what i’ve seen and heard his performances have dipped, but this guy has been carrying a mediocre or awful team singlehandedly for 40+ mins a game for years and years… that’s freakin inhuman enough, Beas is picking up some slack recently but almost no-one is helpin spread the load. Weak move by Riley, never heard him telling the others to step up, but nahh he’ll gladly point to his all-star. Flash is determined, I think his motto is ‘your doubt only makes me stronger’ or something, so he will respond positively, but weak move… give the man some calibre players who are consistent, give the weaker players some stick!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@ LA Huey – Don’t you mean where are all the ‘pro-LeBron people’?? that sentance of yours doesn’t make sense unless you mean PRO LeBron, because your talkign about a group of fans that don’t like Wade’s game unless he’s doing everything he can do…, which by the way he is doing everything for his team.

  • LA Huey

@Dacre, nah, some of the knocks on Lebron is that he doesn’t do what it takes to win. Haters like to nitpick at the few flaws in his game while overlooking EVERYTHING else he does (which should more than make up for his average jumpshot). But I am running on fumes this point after two nights of holiday parties so maybe I am just incoherent.

  • http://slamonline.com Niya-girl-fresh

LA Huey don’t you guys do that to Kobe on here consistently? Lol! *smh*

Anywho it’s obvious Dwayne DOES NOT want to be in Miami at the moment. I won’t be surprised if he asks for a leave in 2010 for sure.

  • Tim

Rileys all about conditioning.. he should be worrying about conditioning out all the gel from his hair

  • g

if beasley and J.O can contribute 18 to 20 points a night and play good defense then miami would b in no trouble and for wade he’ll get back to where he is expected to be dont even worry about wade the team has to step it up and be more consistent

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

Fall down 7 times, get up 8…but then stop caring because your team is mediocre.

  • Fearlessbrother

wow I never replied in here before but I gota say Wow. Albeit his numbers are not as great as last seasons I am truly amazed at the amount of energy Dwayde has to expend night in and night out. i mean look at the team roster. I am surprised that he hasn’t broken down that yet especially after the season he had last season. The man gots to score, defend, rebound, set people up, and coach while he on the floor….give him a vacation and a raise!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

LA Huey – ah I see… nah you make sense now. I think LeBron, Kobe and Wade are all being asked to carry the entire teams they play for (Kobe doesn’t really have to, what with Pau, Bynum in tow, meanwhilst – LeBron thought Shaq was going to be more helpful and Wade knew he wasn’t it) – the one guy who gets a clear pass is Carmelo, because he is benefiting amazingly with having Chauncey.
I think Wade will have a real good look at whats on offer this coming off season.

  • robb

so the Heat failed to surround Wade with talent and suddenly is Dwayne who isn’t good enough??? C’mon. Flash is tired of doing everything by himself knowing the team is going nowhere. Wade’s conditioning is not the problem, it’s the lack of motivation. You didn’t do your job Riley, face the consequences.

  • Hawkules

As big a fan of Wade as I am, I have to agree only because there have been quite a few times where I would see him taking breathers that he normally would not have taken in the past.

I’m over in Iraq so I’ve only seen about 6 games, but I’ve got to say that Wade has not played like that hungry beast that we’ve seen before. However as it’s been said before, it’s a long long season. Wade will be just fine

  • Fearlessbrother

Well last season that hunger was there because he had to prove everybody wrong coming off injuries, i mean conditioning could be a reason his free throws are down and he has been slow back in transition mostly after he misses shots but hey what are we really talking about nit picking on D wades game. his 70% is a lot better than most people 100% in the league

  • flash

dont blame it on dwade u spoiled brats
