Mark Cuban Files a Protest

Erick Dampier was ejected on Friday night for throwing an elbow. His boss, Mark Cuban, strongly disagreed with, to say the least: “Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban officially filed a protest with the NBA office on Sunday over what he termed ‘misapplication of the rules’ by the officiating crew during Friday night’s overtime loss to the Houston Rockets … Cuban had 48 hours after the game to file the protest and send a $10,000 fee to the league. NBA officials have five days to rule on the protest. The officiating crew was Ken Mauer, Brian Forte and John Goble. ‘There are several circumstances where you can assign a technical for an elbow, and we said that’s fine, we don’t have a problem with that….But when you look at that video, there’s no question that wasn’t an elbow with intention to harm, there wasn’t even an elbow thrown,’ Cuban said. ‘By any reasonable standard, that change should have been made. I’m sure the ref didn’t know he could make that change, which is a misapplication of the rules.”‘

I’m sure Stern is going to agree with Cuban and have them play the game over. Cuban just donated 10 G’s

an elbow was thrown, and neither cuban or anyoen else but Damp know if it was meant to inflict harm or not..the refs decided it was, mainly because Dampier had been pissed off all game..Next time just give dampt he 10 grand as a bribe to keep his emotions in check..

Hmm…so the posters here do not believe that when refs are incorrect in their rule interpretations that they should be called out on it?

that they shouldn’t be held responsible for their work? Ridiculous.

  • mems

yea lets review the game and go back and suspend kidd for a game for that flagrant 2 elbow he threw.

  • dude

If houston wants to do it fine, cough up the 10k and do it. But somehow I don’t think they want to review that game.

i don’t get to watch much live, but happened to watch this. the refs made a good call, checking the video to see if Brooks should be assessed a Flagrant for his foul on Dampier. but you could hear the stunned silence in the arena when Dampier got whistled too. you guys JUST AGREED that Brooks jumped on his back excessively, unfairly!! sure you’ll have a mean reaction to it! but Damp immediately calmed down and didn’t follow through his aggressive instincts. i thought it was a commendable reaction from Damp. the ref was an idiot.

“c’mon Stern!! he already won them 1 title! can’t you send him back to Memphis?! damn…”

if what brooks did was a flagrant then what damp did was a tech.

mems, just cos it’s the little on the big, and it don’t look so violent, don’t let it fool you. dude was nowhere near the ball.

what about dirk elbowing landry in the face? carl was standing there, not moving, ready to take the charge. dirk elbowed him in the face, and somehow the foul was on landry.

what mems said, and houston DESERVED TO WIN THAT ONE!

  • mems

exactly. the mavs got away with so many cheap shots and what not that the fact that they’re trying to appeal THIS is just down right laughable.

  • mems

and i refuse to believe that a 5’10 180 pounder was going to intentionally harm a 7 foot 250 pounder

  • RV

dude, so you’re saying there was no elbow thrown?? That’s clear, and any other game or earlier it may not mean much, but damp had been screaming and pissed off all game, in that situation i think you need to make the call, the guy already had one tech and is lucky he wasnt given another since he kept screaming at the refs. At some point you have to realize you’re on thin ice and keep your emotions in check.

yeah i only caught the last few minutes of regulation, and Houston absolutely deserved to win. i just thought the call on Damp was a real p*ssy call – that wasn’t “an elbow”, that was just a shrug-off.
@mems, your point on height doesn’t mean anything (heard of David and Goliath?!!?). i know what you mean – maybe it was a weak flagrant. but he definitely went for the “foul which leaves a mark on your opponent”. and unfortunately, he was too far from the ball, and too close to the mark. but i’d like to see MY point guard jumping all over the back of the opposition center – i’m not criticizing Brooks, he was awesome in that game.

@mems: You seriously have no clue what you’re talking about. Being a center is frequently about getting the sh*t smacked out of you by someone smaller than you and the ref looking the other way. Or just shrugging and saying to your face, “Hey, you’re bigger than he is.”

thing is…KIDD SHOULD HAVE BEEN EJECTED BEFORE
