Suspension for Trevor Ariza?

Following his inexplicable elbow thrown at DeMar DeRozan yesterday, which led to an ejection, Trevor can expect to hear from the League office very soon: “This one won’t take a lot of time studying the tape. Trevor Ariza tried to hit DeMar DeRozan. It is difficult to guess why, unless it was some sort of UCLA-USC thing. DeRozan did not do anything to Ariza, other that steal the ball. But Ariza was 0 for 9 and wildly frustrated, so he took a swing. Naturally, he missed. That should be an easy call for Stu Jackson in the NBA office. Expect a one-game suspension.”

lol he swung an elbow like a right hook….i thought he would learn from kobe how to get someone the right way!

  • neaorin

So that would make Ariza 0 for 10 for the night?

Good for Jarret Jack! Someone standing up for your teammates!

Not to try and be biased here, but to me when I first saw the ‘steal’ it looked like a foul. But Trevor was playing awful that whole game. He was getting super frustrated in the previous plays.

If I played so poorly I’d be frustrated too. But it was just stupid to take that swing.

Hursty: So.. if it was a foul, you take a swing at the guys head?

  • Danny W UK

A fan shoulda thrown a beer at Ariza, make the Artest circle come good.

Jukai, NO. I’m not ‘defending’ Ariza’s actions. Not by a long shot. But I think the frustration of having a terrible game, and then (what appeared) to be a foul which wasn’t called by the referee’s led Ariza to snap a little.
It was like he was firstly going to try and get the ball back, and then just threw a tantrum. Then the elbow went flying.

I’ve seen replays of it from several angles, and “not to be biased” but it looks like DeMar had a clean steal.

It was a clean swing, he gets what he deserves

I think the raptors learned from what happened in Boston and stick up for their players, then again, when it happened to Bosh, I dont think Jarrett was on the court..hmmm

A lot of people vouch for Ariza as a good guy. After I saw that swing, I suddenly remembered the clothesline he gave an airborne Rudy Fernandez last season, which looked more dirty now. I’m starting to doubt the “good guy” label. Maybe Ariza is a dirty player when he gets frustrated.

I love what JJ did. One game suspension for missing DeMar’s head. What about if he had actually contact? What would the suspension be then? If the intent was there to injure an opposing player, whether he connected or not, 3-4 game suspension should be in order.

  • RM

Amar’e and Boris both got a one game suspension (in the playoffs) for standing up off the bench (speaking of which, there were some shady calls in that game that I think had to do with the referee scandal).

  • wassup

he’s lucky he didn’t connect on the punch/elbow or whatever it was… he’d be in some trouble if it did.

  • marialovesmagic

    Ron Artest wouldn’t have missed.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

He’ll get at least 1 game.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

    Dumbass.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

DeRozan and Ariza are friends (I think), so I don’t suspect Ariza had any intention to single out the rookie. He was just frustrated, and took a swing (maybe an elbow).
DeRozan seems like a really good guy–after the game he said Ariza is still his dude and it wasn’t personal.

  • Buschfiya

Derozan is gonna evolve into a mean player in years to come.

  • Buschfiya

as in really good not as in throwing bows

  • http://www.raptorspace.com/profiles/macdonald7/ TheRook

It’s rediculous…I know that Ariza’s a good player, but what if he really did connect? Carmelo got a bunch of games for a hit and run, there’s no reason that Ariza shouldn’t get any less, minus the fact that he didn’t make contact. At least ten games for intent to injure would suffice.

  • Jer Boi

shots to the back of the head aint even allowed in the UFC. hes SO lucky he didn’t connect on thatelbow.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    Wow, wtf.
I’m going to be ‘uncool’ guy here and say he deserves at least 4 games. That was a vicious elbow swung towards the guy’s temple at full force. Who cares if it didn’t connect. That was an attempt to injury. His frustration at his play is irrelevant. 4 games MINIMUM.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Yeah, he really could have messed dude up with that. He might get more than one game.

  • LA Huey

Ariza needs some time under Mutombo’s wing.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

If that rabbit blow had landed he could’ve potentially ended DeMar’s career, or life, even. If it landed this might’ve been another Kermit Washington – Rudy T thing. It scares me how close he actually was to landing it, too. IMHO this is easily worse than what any of the players at the Pistons-Pacers or Knicks-Nuggets brawls did over the past few years, just because of how meaningless it would’ve been to end someone’s career over a mere turnover.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

There’s a damned good reason why hitting the back of the head is outlawed in boxing and the UFC. Google “rabbit punch”.

  • RM

Well, Ariza was only suspended one game. I definitely think that is not enough games. I was hoping for 4.

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/6769549.html

  • RM

    And by 4 I clearly meant 24.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Joel: I agree with this being worse than any NBA ‘fight’, where at the very most, you’re exchange fists face on with another player.
Here, it is an elbow to the temple of someone who is completely unaware and defenseless. Sure, it was reactionary and out of frustration and I don’t care if DeRozan and Ariza are buds off the court… this was just terrible. Now that I think about it, 4 games isn’t even enough.

  • thalilbigkahuna

    Haha. “Naturally, he missed.”

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@tealish: Right. Exactly, man. This wasn’t something tame like a stare-down or jumping off the bench or anything like that. It was a really stupid and dangerous thing to do. I hope he gets a suspension long enough for him to learn his lesson, because had that elbow landed it could’ve meant the end of 2 careers.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Ariza isn’t anywhere near as good as he thinks he is.

  • Clark

Psh. 1 game is more than enough. Everyone needs to stop worrying so much and let physical play happen. Bring back the good ol’ days of real NBA basketball…

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Clark: No. Please don’t mix up “physical basketball” with reckless, dangerous behaviour. There’s a very big difference between hard-fouling someone to prevent a layup and throwing your entire bodyweight into an elbow at the back of someone’s head.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Clark: let’s play basketball and let me elbow you as hard as I can in the back of the head. It’ll be fun.
