Post Up: Kobe Winnin’ Games

Bron and Melo, too.

by Holly MacKenzie/@stackmack

Another day, another (thousands of) dollar(s) earned.

Kobe Bryant. Broken Finger. Seven Turnovers. Game winner.

I know, I know, our boy Bogut was robbed out of a charging call (and hilariously let us know his thoughts via Twitter), but that’s what happens when you’re going against a 14 year NBA vet and MVP. Just the way the game goes. Can’t lie, I was pretty choked about the call, too, but after the game winner I was happy. I just love watching people rise above the pressure time and time again.

The Bucks deserved that game though. This is the NBA and there is no time for moral victories, but that was as big of one as I’ve seen this season.

Pau had 26 points, 22 rebounds and four blocked shots for the first 20/20 game of his career.

Those damn Wizards. They need some wizardry, quick. A 112-109 loss to the Kings, another fantastic game from Tyreke Evans and I just can’t stop pulling for Gil. Evans finished with 26 points, six rebounds, sixk assists and two blocked shots. If my eyes were not deceiving me, he also had a steal on Gil in the final seconds that they are not crediting him for. After the steal, Gil had no choice but to foul him and fouled out in the process, finishing with 33 points, six rebounds and six assists. With the loss, Washington has fallen to 7-16 on the season while the Kings move on up to 11-13.

The $1 dollar beer was a hit.

Apparently Dirk was, too. I was watching the Magic annihilate the Raptors (by 19), so I missed this, but our boy Russ kept me in the loop. He was Dirkus Circus’in down the stretch, shooting impossible to guard shots and making both of his 3-point attempts as he finished with 35 and 11. The Mavericks pulled away from the Thunder to win 100-86.

Despite the loss, OKC’s shoe game still came out on top. Nike was smart and had the entire Thunder team wearing KD’s new shoe in an orange creamsicle colorway. It was a pretty slick move and felt approrpriate for the Thunder.

Didn’t help KD shoot any better though. He was just 4-for-18 from the floor for his 12 points.

Coming into the game against the Magic, the Raptors last 12 losses were by an average of 19 points. They went on to lose to the Magic by 19. On the way to the victory, Dwight Howard had eight blocked shots to go with his 18 points (6-for-7 fgs) and 14 rebounds. It was ugly for Raptors fans. Somehow, it keeps getting worse.

While the Magic lost Turkoglu, they gained Matt Barnes and I’ve got to say that I love him on this team. I love his toughness and the intangibles he brings to the table.

Jrue Holiday with nine points and nine assists in another start alongside Allen Iverson. The Sixers lost 108-101 to the Cavs, but hopefully Eddie Jordan will stay with the Jrue/Ivy lineup. Love seeing Holiday get more time. As he gets comfortable, he’s only going to continue getting better.

LeBron watch: 36/6/7/3

Melo watch: 38/9/3

Kobe watch: 39/7/4

In addition to his line, LeBron had a hell of a block on Dalembert, too. Wow. Okay, there were some other games on the jampacked schedule, but I think we’ve covered most of the madness. At least some of it. It was a great night. Now, on to NBA on TNT Thursday. Whoooo. Phoenix/Portland, let’s go . Give us a game. Jerryd Bayless, do your thing.

Kobe is amazing. But in defense on that charge. Artest got his hold body hit on a drive, and no foul was called on Bogut. But 100 percent a charge lol.

  • roman

Holly MacKenzie/@stackmack- you should be mad at the lack of defensive pressure the Bucks put on KB24. They knew what spot he was going and still let him shoot a clean shot. Real is real- Bucks deserved to lose that game.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Does it make me sort of a flip flopper or a lover of the game when I started screaming at the TV when Kobe got that BS bailout call, and then screamed wildly and high fived everyone like a madman when Kobe hit the game winner?
As much as I want to say that the Bucks were robbed, I can’t believe they let Kobe iso up one on one. What were they thinking? They almost deserved it for thinking one dude could stop Kobe.

Matt Barnes only looked as good as he did because he was playing against the Raptors. They have a keen habit of making other (lesser) players look like stars. Story of my life.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

I didn’t see any games. I was at my girls christmas party getting insulted. Sad to see Kd play like sh*t but it happens to everyone I guess.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Man.. I have to see the charge call on Bogut. I missed electricity the last 24 hours, and feel so behind on everything haha. Holly, I very much appreciate the shout-out/mention on yesterday’s post up and responded there. Might just c/p it over here anyways though.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

The raptors just seem like they’ve stopped competing out there. Also its no conincidence that Iverson is playing better since Jrue Holiday has been starting beside him. Iverson was always most effective playing next to a big pg.

  • Dre JayAre

    Wasn’t this Gasol’s 3rd 20/20 game in a row?

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Bryan: Dirk Nowitzki preeeetty much schooled him.
Top five in the NBA are still Wade, Kobe, Lebron, Dirk… well, I guess I’d throw Melo over Paul and Howard at this point in time to. But I think given time, Paul’ll outplay Melo again.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Dre JayAre: The last two times he got 20 rebounds, he only had 15-19 points…

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Not basketball related but Chris Henry from the bengals just died.

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

Melo was 19/20 from the line. That’s not normal.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Yeah, falling out of a truck!! Crazy.
Yo … the Lakers don’t look that great right now.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Oh sh*t! I heard Chris Henry was on life support. Sad way to go out. RIP Chris.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

I’ve never seen a team with as much talent as the Raptors have struggle so bad. They need a new coach and a big trade. NOW. T-Mac back to T-Dot?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

The Raptors need a Ben Wallace type of player who defends and rebounds and doesn’t care about stats and plays all out. Too much finesse on that team.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

It’s also a team full of streak shooters– from one to five. I’m not even kidding, have you ever seen a starting five of streak shooters before? Outside of Bosh, there is no one consistent. Defense wins championships, but this team needs another form of constant offense to even be a contender.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Kobe does it again, with a broken finger. When we all watch these highlights from Kobe so far from this season, ten years from now, we will be saying he is one of the greatest ever. To play with a broken finger is He man, warrior stuff. I bet alot of players in the NBA would not play with this pain. Kobe is on another level right now, if he gets this title this year, KObe will have 6 years after this to win one more title to tie MJ. Kobe wants to play until he is 40, he is in great shape and works on his game all the time. Kobe will be the NBA’s all time leading scorer one day. BOOK IT!!!!

  • Raptor1987

BC should fire Jay and coach/clean his own mess in toronto…

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Hedo is obviously not as good a leader as advertised either. Building on what tad said they need someone who actually gives a sh*t about winning

  • Raptor1987

BC should fire Jay and coach/clean up his mess in the Tdot…

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

The Seed: Aren’t we already saying Kobe is one of the greatest ever?

  • Atrain

Lakers got the calls all night, 3-1 advantage at the stripe. The no charge call on Kobe in OT just iced it. He’s a great player and the Lakers are a good team but it shouldn’t have come to that

  • http://www.yahoo.com logues

kobe is amazing, but that and 1 call was terrible. kobe took bout four steps, dont know how that was continuation

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Drew Bogut was fantastic on Twitter after that game, the chess line got me laughing out loud over here in cold Switzerland.
Also, a VERY nice game winner by Kobe, slight hesitation spin fake, then extreme fadeaway, money. Hate the player, can’t hate on that shot. Pretty as hell.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Ouch KD. must be the shoes.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Oh and Dirk’s really scary good this season. Please lord, let Dirk Nowitzki – all star starter, happen.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Jukai, we are saying he is one of the greatest ever, didn’t want to go overboard with my top 5 all time anaylsis of Kobe’s game and why I feel he is only behind Jordan as the best player to ever play. So I just played it simple, but he will be scoring champ for NBA, then I will profess him as the best!!!

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

You know, I used to think Hedo had ice in his veins when he’d always take those last shots. Now I honestly believe that Hedo just doesn’t care about the game. If he makes it, cool, if he doesn’t, no biggie. Sometimes he just doesn’t play in Toronto.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Kobe needs to score 13,875 more points to be the all-time NBA scoring leader. That’s an absurd number of points. Kobe would have to average, ohhhh, about 18.7 points from now till he is forty, without missing one game, to beat Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record. No injuries, no taking off games, nothing.
And considering Kobe has already said if he’s not physically able to be ‘top dog’ on his team, he’ll retire… I don’t think he’s going to forty.
    That’s a pipe dream.
Let’s even say he plays till 37. He’d have to average something like 29.1 points from now till he’s 37 to break Kareem’s record.
I just don’t see it being done.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

There is only one player on pace to break Kareem’s scoring Record. and its not Kobe

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Kobe can play ’til he’s 40… but only if he’s winning titles. So I tend to agree with you, Jukai.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Thanks for dinner last night, Holly.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

When did Kobe say he would never take a secondary role?
    I didn’t know that. Interesting.

  • http://www.clutchfans.com/ Blue

After watching the Rockets-Nuggets game, what’s the most traveling calls you guys have seen in an NBA game? 6 or 7 were called last night…is this an anomaly? I was pretty frustrated with the refs last night. Of course I’m a Rockets fan but if the game is called well by the officials and my team loses, then there’s no one to blame but the Rockets. But at one point, the officiating was so bad that Billups was hit by Nene and a foul was called on Ariza. And this is not me saying the Nuggets wouldn’t have beaten us without the refs (JR Smith was killing…and Melo? Damn!), but it was really bad last night…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Blue, I hear you man. The refs were ridiculously horrible last night. Brooks was d@mn near SMACKED going to the hoop and no call; that completely took away the Rockets’ momentum.
The refs clearly favoured the Nuggets that game. Remember when the Rockets were making a run and Lowry comes down on the fast break and gets the ball knocked away? They called NUGGET BALL.
Man, the refs sucked last night. Every time the Rockets went on a run they were screwed over. It also didn’t help that Landry only had 12 points and Scola had even less.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

You can make a serious case that Wilt Chamberlain is better than Michael Jordan.

  • http://badnewzballer Jdubc

@atrain.. 3-1 FT advantage for the lakers?!? well the bucks did take like thirty 3 point attempts. ohhh and if Bogot and E. Ilyasova woulda made their throws we wouldnt hear people complaining about kobe’s non call at the end of the game

  • http://slamonline.com Niya-girl-fresh

    **clears throat** Yall mad?

  • Atrain

@judbc – my point was everytime the Lakers touched the ball in the paint or missed a shot a foul was called. Dont believe me? How about TWICE lane violations were called on Milwaukee after missed LA free throws…you don’t see that twice a year in the whole league let alone in a single game.

Just b/c Illyasova missed some ft’s in OT doesn’t mean the three blind mice need to make a brutal call like they did. I give Milwaukee credit for being able to overcome all of that, and still have a chance to win. Most teams would have rolled over for the champs. Kudos to Kobe for “doin work”

  • robb

@James the balla. Exactly. Yes it was a charge, the refs made a mistake, and believe me, there were other mistakes against the Lakers, but obviously the spotlight is on Kobe, so people complain a lot more, talkin’ about special treatments and this and that.

you can’t take anything away from Kobe, the guy is awesome, works hard and respects the game.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Darksaber – what’s your twitter account name?

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Teddy: I could say you could make an attempt. Not a serious case.

  • Frenzal

Kobe whingin to refs evry time he missed a shot tha charge call on bobut was bogus he’s not mj not lebron an not even d Wade

  • http://mbuzzy.com joe salgado

Kobe kobe kobe theyr is not amore beautiful player to watch half the nba is unwatchable but kobe is clearly on another level poetry in motion!

I just got a new pair of Nike Air Force One shoes, and I could not be happier. My custom Nike Air Force Ones are the coolest thing that I have seen in years. These ones are a special St. Patrick’s day addition, done in bright green and white. Very retro. I am tempted to save my Nike Air Force One shoes for playing basketball, but the thing is, I just can not keep them off of my feet. Everyone who sees me gives me a look of envy when they check out my Nike Air Force One shoes, because they know that I’ve got the cash flow to buy the nice threads.
