2010 NBA Draft – Shooting Guards

Evan Turner is breaking his back to get to the NBA.

by Jeff Fox

While there are concerns over the depth of the point guard class for the 2010 NBA Draft, no such concerns exist with the other backcourt position. The shooting guard class for 2010 is a fair bit deeper, with upwards of seven guys currently projected to have their name called in the firsEvan Turnert round. But whose stock is soaring to the top? Read on.

1) Evan Turner | Ohio State | Junior
How tough is Evan Turner? A broken back earlier this season only cost him six games and less than a month of action. How versatile is Evan Turner? Despite being a 6-7 shooting guard, he is playing the point this season for Ohio State. How good is Evan Turner? Check his stats: 19 points, 10 boards and six assists a game. How long will Evan Turner have to sit in the green room on draft night? Barely long enough to warm his chair — he should be a top five pick.

2) Xavier Henry | Kansas | Freshman
We all knew Xavier Henry was a good player, however the early returns from his collegiate career have to be considered a pleasant surprise. Despite joining a powerhouse, veteran-laden Kansas team, Henry has led them in scoring for much of the season (recently being overtaken by Sherron Collins) and is hitting his threes at a 46 percent clip. The strongly built lefty should become the ninth SLAM high school diarist in the NBA next season after going in the top 10 in this June’s draft.

3) Willie Warren | Oklahoma | Sophomore
With the Griffin brothers out of the way, this was going to be the year for Willie Warren to lead the Oklahoma Sooners to glory. Things haven’t quite gone according to the script, however, with Oklahoma struggling to win games and Warren not proving that he can be a point guard while also having difficulty hitting his outside shot (both his assist to turnover ratio and three-point percentage have declined from last year). Nonetheless, he is still an explosive combo guard and should get himself selected in the lottery.

4) Avery Bradley| Texas | Freshman
Xavier Henry isn’t the only hot shot Big 12 freshman — Avery Bradley is excelling for No. 1 ranked Texas. An explosive athlete, Bradley can also knock down the three and lock down his opponent on defense. But at 6-3 he is a dreaded “combo guard” similar to Willie Warren. If he can prove that he can play some point guard at the next level, the sky’s the limit. Look for him to be a lottery pick if he enters this June’s draft.

5) Lance Stephenson | Cincinnati | Freshman
The most highly touted of all the players on this list, Lance Stephenson is finding the transition from high school to collegiate ball not so easy. Born Ready has had his moments, but on top of the questions concerning his attitude you can also add a non-existent outside shot and a tendency to turn the ball over. His body and skill set would make him a late first round or early second round pick this June, but another year in college might be best for him to work on his game.

Next in line: Manny Harris, Michigan; James Anderson, Oklahoma St; Aubrey Coleman, Houston; Matt Bouldin, Gonzaga; Jerome Dyson, Connecticut.

Next up: Small Forwards

Evan Turner will be the best Ohio State alum since Michael Redd… possibly Jimmy Jackson.

Geez, did Greivis Vasquez run over your dog or something? He’s not on your top ten at either guard position…

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.com Jeff Fox

I’m pretty sure my dog is still alive, but I’ll have to check when I get home! I consider Vasquez a shooting guard at the next level, but at this point he isn’t a lock to get picked in the draft. Things can change real quick though.

  • Hussman25

I agree with another year of school for Lance… From some stories I have read, it seems he is florishing on and off the court since leaving the NYC area… 1 MORE YEAR will only help his game!

  • spit hot fiyah

    Harris over Warren and Bradley

  • Monday Night Live

Vasquez won’t make it in the NBA if he is a 2 guard IMO he is a big point guard in the L

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Lance Stephenson CAN’T stay in Cinncy another year. The NCAA will already have started it’s investigation by then.

Great job ranking the top SG’s! I agree with your top 4 players in that same order. However again, Stephenson is very talented and I just heard a few people say that talent wise Lance is a top 20 player overall. I personally think he is not t player I would want on my roster. I think most NBA front office personnel would agree. The problem, Lance will leave early, some NBA team will take a gamble on him and get him where he should have went 10 pick earlier and turn out to play good selfish nba ball and be known as an a** hole off the court. I have seen this over and over.

  • Tyler Whitcomb

Durrell Summers is another worth talking about, but do agre he is not better than Harris, Bouldin, and especially not James anderson who I really like. James will be a steal in the late 2nd round when he fianlly gets picked.

I always considered Avery Bradley a PG. But I guess in college they can do whatever they want. lol

None of these 5 will be shooting guards in the NBA. 3 point guards, 1 small forward, and 1 playing center on the inmate team.

  • http://IJustWantMyNameToLookBig.com Chukaz

i like evan turner (no homo), but he’s overrated. I don’t think he’ll be great, good but not great

  • Twin Paradox

Stretch, u gotta chill, man. People make jokes sometimes, deal with it. Hazell is just a big time scorer on a bad team…no way he goes before Henry..

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.com Jeff Fox

Chukaz – I tend to agree with you on Turner – I don’t see him being a superstar, yet he should be a dependable, valuable player for a team.

  • Twin Paradox

    but damnnnn…no Klay Thompson?

  • STRETCH

That’s the problem people are jokin and I want to talk bball. Yes Hazell’s isn’t playin on the best team in basketball but he’s been puttin up those #ers 4 yrs now.IN THE BIG EAST. That has 2 count 4 something.

  • STRETCH

    I HAVEN’T SEEN THOMPSON YET .BUT I HEARD HE’S A PTPer

  • STRETCH

as the season goes on this list will change . it will be fun to watch .

  • STRETCH

what about E.Millsap-17pt 9rb 2s . he’s not on any1′s list and the kid is doing work .

  • STRETCH

Scotty Hopson did work against KU . leading TENN TO VICTORY

  • dw24

Yeah if I’m a GM I’m looking at Scotty Hopson, Manny Harris, and James Anderson before Lance Stephenson. Attitude, inconsistent, lacking a decent jumper, and needs the balls too much. Turnover prone. I’m thinking Jerome Dyson and Matt Bouldin might be able to translate into points in the L. Maybe I’m mistaken but I’d rather run them there or as combo guards.

  • nora

What’s your position on Iman Shuppert? I’m thinking about him because im watchin tech, unc right now and he’s not playin ‘loud’ but gets into guys defensively and I know he can shoot and move without the basketball. he dominates the ball at times but in the L can’t he develop into a high quality defender, a knock down shooter and an offensive threat cause he moves without the ball well? He may not be a first rounder, but he may be a 6th man

IF OUR GUARD PLAY CAN DOMINATE 2DAY WE SHOULD WIN …LOOK 4 A BIG GAME FROM VAUGHN & WRIGHT 2DAY VS THE ND
