’73 Sixers Clinging on to Loss Record

According to the irrepressible Fred “Mad Dog” Carter, you gotta take pride in your shame. Or something: “In 1972-73, Carter was the leading scorer for the fantastically awful Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 20 points, his best season to that point. The 76ers went 9-73, which stands as the worst record in N.B.A. history. The mark is in mortal danger. The Nets — a hapless team trapped between eras, abandoned by fans and its own management — have won just three times in 39 games, for a sickly winning percentage of .077. They are on pace for six victories. They are threatening to steal Carter’s perverse sense of pride. ‘It’s our record,’ Carter insisted in a recent telephone interview. ‘And we earned it, one way or the other.’ The record has survived two serious assaults. The Dallas Mavericks went 9-71 before winning their final two games in 1993. The 1997-98 Denver Nuggets got their 10th win in their 77th game and also finished 11-71.”

Thanks but no thanks, Mad Dog. Let someone else have the record. We’ve had it long enough. Let some other team have a turn. That is all.

I think if this Nets team stays together for a another 3 years they could be good. I mean, the talent is there…Things just aren’t working right now. John Wall could help too…..

He should get together with his old teammates and pop champagne when the Nets win their 10th game, like the ’72 Dolphins.

lmao @ “what”… but ya why would you want to be remembered for such a record idk if this guy enjoys telling that story to his grand kids or something… “back in my day we were so awful….”

mad dog-”i was the reason we won those 9 games!” we wulda ended up like last years DET Lions if not 4 my 20 PPG!.”lol

I dig it. The man played like a soldier for the worst team in history and they made the playoffs only three years later, with Carter still putting up 18ppg (surrounded by some real, talent, too). I’d be proud of taking part in that turnaround. And you can’t have the redemption without the losses.

The Nets are the perfect franchise to break the record for least wins in a season, since they’re leaving NJ(home) behind anyway. They can take the crap record, and then move away. Sort of like growing up with a horrible family, then running away to NY in hopes that it’ll all be better. Then when they’re all growns up and win 20 games/year, they can look back at 2009-2010 and laugh.

Haha good one mike. Plus they are gonna tank the season to get John Wall.

its pretty difficult to lose that mnay games, considering how many other relatively awful teams there are in the league. I can see them clawing their way to 12 or 15 wins.

@Gametime – “gonna tank”? I’d say they’ve been doing a pretty good tank job all season. Granted, they had some injuries earlier in the season, but they’re still losing at an epic pace. Who knew Vince Carter was that important? Trading Vince turned the Nets from a bad team into a terrible team.

  • Michael

tanking is a mediocre team playing reserves and holding out starters for minor injuries. The Nets just suck.
