All-Star Reserves: Revealed

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Those poor TNT execs. No matter how much careful planning goes into it, and all the hype that’s built up, the Internet always manages to somehow undercut them.

You could watch the broadcast tonight to find out who will be coming off the bench in the All-Star game next month, or you could be smart, and simply continue reading the remainder of this post.

Here are the names, via Yahoo!:

Point guards Deron Williams of Utah, Chicago’s Derrick Rose and Boston’s Rajon Rondo will make their All-Star Game debuts next month in Dallas, sources said Thursday.

Besides Rondo and Rose, the East roster includes Boston’s Paul Pierce, Toronto’s Chris Bosh, Charlotte’s Gerald Wallace and Atlanta’s Joe Johnson and Al Horford.

The West includes the New Orleans’ Chris Paul, the Lakers’ Pau Gasol, Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant, Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki, Memphis’ Zach Randolph and Portland’s Brandon Roy.

Apologies to David Lee, Chris Kaman, Josh Smith, Andrew Bynum and Chauncey Billups. Maybe next year. Or, who knows, someone may get injured between now and Feb.14.

Agree, disagree, or indifferent to the selections? You know the drill: sound off below.

no complaints here. Congrats to all the ASG noob’s

ATL SHAWTY – Joe Johnson and Al Horford, WUT? … Don’t know Josh Smith well enough, but is this going to upset him? I’m sure he will be disappointed, that’s natural, but will this have an effect on his game and the chemistry with teammates? … From the outside looking in, Josh Smith seems more important to the Hawks than Horford… Maybe Lang can give some insight on this.

  • estoniandude

i would replace gasol with kaman. but its not up to me.

  • mike

wanted rondo and rose in it badly – glad to see it

  • Remo Williams

eh…. no REALLY big upsets. should be an entertaining game

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I guess the guarantee of Andrew Bynum representing the West didn’t pan out so well. I’m happy for Crash, J-Will and Rondo.

  • itaigruss

Daily Double needs to start getting some love hes putting in some serious work

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Deron! All is right in the world.

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

    DLee come on! Snub.

  • CTP

THRILLED to see Deron Williams finally makes the cut!!!! It’s about damn time!!!

Also happy to see Derrick Rose. Finally 2 players that I actually want to watch play in the game!

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

I figure it’s between Horford and Lee for the backup big (maybe Noah). Can’t really complain Al made it since the Hawks are the better team. Lee will get his in the future, I bet.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

    Kaman wuz robbed.

  • peter

i feel like lee or josh smith deserves to be on the roster over smith, and kaman over pau gasol (he missed sooo many games; come one!). everyone else seems to be in the right spot.

  • http://slam ld5

    bargnani wasnt even menchend wow

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

There is no all star game without Shaq.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

Al Horford instead of J-Smoove?!?!?? thats a snub right there, also IF DRose plays like is playin this month, hes most def an all star, BUT not like he has done in November and December…BRANDON ROY 3 TIME ALL STAR!!!!!

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

No problems with the selections. If I was TNT I’d be pissed. Both the network & NBA execs need to investigate who is leaking this kind of info. It’s not like a large group of people needed to be there to tabulate the final results – so there should be a short list of ‘suspects’.

  • AllenI

kaman and lee were robbed man

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

pau should not be there, hes missed 17 games.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

aaron brooks should be there in pau’s place. pau’s place, sounds like a nice gentelman’s club.

  • Yesse

These are some bad reserve’s.Are the coaches blind or what?Rondo?Horford?I bet they were high making these.Lee should have been a big man for the east and Bynum or Kaman for west.I can understand why i didnt see Josh Smith although he should have been there.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I like Horford, but there is no way he should make the team over Josh Smith. Man, Paul Pierce shouldn’t have made the team over Josh Smith. J-Smoove got robbed. Other than that, no real slights.

  • http://aim.com matt nastase (boston fan)

Finally Rondo gets the credit he deserves!!!!

  • JoeMaMa

Well said, Tarzan. Hamstrung Gasol is less deserving than his younger brother!! Put Bynum or KAMAN (who knew?) on there instead. And I’m loving the Deron Williams love here, I believe he’s maybe the top PG in the league when healthy. Yeah, I said it!

  • http://aim.com matt nastase

paul n rondo the only ones rep da celtics in da all star game????

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Th3_R3al_Chris

Cleveland has the best record in the league and only one representative? And how did Gerald Wallace make it over Stephen Jackson?

  • mike

@ yesse – rondo leads the east in assists – maybe it’s you who’s high

  • rob

    Fair enough.

  • Bigbeatz

How is Chauncey Billups not an all-star??

  • mike

@Th3_R3al_Chris – Who else from Cleveland is an all-star? Not Mo this year.

  • http://thezantabakherald.wordpress.com Jer

Come on! Put Lee in over Horford.

    He’s a much better player!

  • slamfan4life

    Noah needed to be added

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

The fact that the Cavs are so good with only one all-star fits with why LeBron will win another MVP trophe, but no championship ring. Unless ofcourse they make a ‘big’ trade as is always a rumor with the Cavs.

  • http://yahoo fonz

rose is taking over allstar weekend: skills competition, rook-soph game and allstar game. Rose is due for a cover

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I agree with the above sentiments….Horford has no place in the game. The ATLien does though.

  • Candice

I have no complaints right now.

  • OTV78

D.Lee got robed , the Celtics don’t deserve 3 all stars!

  • Riggs

    should be starting.

  • PrettyBoyPeeWee

No Kaman,No Lee,No Josh Smith WTF They Got Snubbed, And I Think Rose,Horford, And Gasol Shouldnt Have Made It, Rose Start’d Off Real Slow n Horford Aint Put’n Up Big Enough Numbs n Gasol Miss’d 2 Many Games

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

i’m so giddy, this might make the allstar game watchable after all. Deron, Rose, CP, Rondo, Nash, JESUS CHRIST that’s the cream of the PG crop right there. Forwards/Centers, man your lanes, cause you are getting passes. Congrats to D-Will for making it, about damn time. Same goes to Rondo, all the 1st timers really (Z-BO!!), i haven’t seen many Hawks games, but generally reading the slam comments, seems Josh, Jamal and Joe (hey, a new three J’s, where Toni B. at?) are the true stars on that team and Al’s the workhorse. Good for him, i’d have prefered Drew Bogut though. And Chris Kaman, but Fakers were gonna get 2 anyway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kevinwilson16 Kevin Wilson

Pau’s Place sounds like an awesome Thai restaurant.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

It comes down to Lopez, Lee, Noah and Al. I agree Smoove deserves it more, but they had to choose a center/FC.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

NUPE makes a good point, but I say Mamba’s got the edge on the MVP trophy so far.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Durant, Nowitzki, Kob’s, Melo, Roy, Randolph, Amaré(sic), Gasol…damn the west has some scorers on that team…Nash and CP3 can just chill and throw them oops.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

So you say, Ryne… so you say… agree to disagree?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Agree to disagree, Darksaber. What’s the point of starting this discussion here, eh? Ha!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Deron Williams FINALLY MADE IT!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Also, what does David Lee have to do to get into a freaking All-Star game?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Horford over Josh Smith are you kidding?

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

exactly Ryne, let’s not open that can of worms..

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.co BETCATS

Wallace is in the All-Star game and the Dunk Contest. SLAMONLINE SEASON PREVIEWS PREDICTED WE WOULD WIN 22 GAMES, WE HAVE ALREADY WON 22 GAMES. (caps lock to make your jaws drop) Respect my Bobcats. Maybe one day we will get on TNT or ABC or ESPN. 2 straight seasons of no-exposure. Congratulations to everybody else too. But i am going to have to waste all my money on Gerald Wallace related all-star gear now; which i am excited to do.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    must feel good, BETS. Enjoy.

  • tavoris

no complaints about Horford over Smith. Smith gets the stats, but Horford does all the dirty work for the Hawks. Plus, he’s the one guy who’s ALWAYS doing media for them. Josh is definitely deserving, but still paying the penalty for past immaturity. Most of the coaches think David Lee is all inflated stats (even tho he’s probably better than they think).

  • tavoris

Rose did start of slow, but he’s playing like a MONSTER now.

  • Jaren

    Kaman > Gasol!!!!

  • buschfire

Bosh Should be STARTING. not even an honourable mention for Andrea Bargnani? hmm…figures.

I Hate How The West Coaches Kept Melo Out Last Season Because He Missed 12 Games But Pau Missed 17 Games This Season. Way To Stay Consistent, West Coaches. J-Smoove And Chauncey Got Robbed!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

No doubt Horford does the dirty work, but Josh Smith is grinding this year. Last year it was obvious Horford was the harder worker, this year I’m not so sure. When Josh hits the bench, their defense crumbles. He covers up all of their defensive mistakes, not Horford. They both hit the glass, but Josh seems to get more key rebounds. And his defensive versatility is crazy. Nah, Josh needed to be rewarded for the way he’s matured this year. Paul Pierce could have stayed home in my opinion.

  • http://groups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=groups.groupProfile&groupid=104091021&Mytoken=268B8D6B-14D8-48CD-B3A98462B35A9D54203746838 clapzilla

Yeah BETCATS! Crash Is Gonna Put It Down! And He’s The Frontrunner For Defensive Player of The Year!

  • SeanJaye88

So glad Horford is in. He deserves it.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@Darksaber: I was one of the many who didnt agree with Rose´s slam ranking, however this past few weeks made me a fan of the kid BUT, HES NOT CREAM OF THE CROP PG IN THIS LEAGUE YET AND IM SHOCKED HOW YOU AMERICANS WHO KNOW THE GAME SO WELL THINK HES A PURE POINT, HES A SCORING POINT GUARD A LA TONY PARKER AT MOST..compare Rondo, Nash, CP or Deron setting up his teamates, its really not close, though Rose has impressed A LOT PAST WEEKS, out of his mind dominating last few games.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.co BETCATS

I dont get the Horford – Smith argument. Horford got on as a center, Josh Smith is a sf/pf combo. How can you replace one with the other?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Exactly, BET. Congrats about Crash, by the way.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

@Sporting: not american, but no worries. And you do know that the PG position in the NBA involves scoring in bunches. Nash will BURN you if you sag off him, Rondo gets to the hoop at will and is a jumper away from being an utter nightmare on offense, CP3 just put 38 and 9 on the warriors last night, Deron… you get my drift. So i’ll gladly stick to my earlier statement, Rose is among the crème de la crème of the League’s Point Gods.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

BETCATS: We wanted YOU to write the Cats preview as you have in year’s past, but you didn’t answer numerous emails to do so…what happened? And how many wins would you have predicted??

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

also, eff a “tough juice”, my favorite NBA nickname is “Crash” Wallace. so fitting.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.co BETCATS

Ben, i thought i told you guys i switched emails (aol started sending me spam). Cowcluper@gmail from now on if you are trying to reach me. Honestly, i would have said 37-45 wins just like i think now. Then we were 1 scorer and 1 power forward away from being a contender. Now we are 1 power forward away from being a contender.

  • http://twitter.com/pdxgaybball dma

ugh boston gets 3 in why? If anyone KG shouldn’t be in the game. And congrats zbo I guess.

There is no all star game without Shaq.

    ……so true….=(

  • http://bulls.com airs

called rose for all star game since like he was in eighth grade yo.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.co BETCATS

unrelated yet related: i hope TNT hires Shaq as a lockerroom corespondant so he can still pull his pranks. Last year i was glad he was on the team because their really wasnt anyone more deserving. But this year, Horford earned his spot and you cant take it away from him just for Shaq’s constant entertainment value. But if he had a official ‘job’ that could get him into the lockerroom, we wouldnt be sacrifising anything by making the right desision.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

First of all, my apologizes to Russ. I assumed that an actual Western Conference CENTER was going to be in ASG. I was wrong. Honestly, I was pulling for Bynum obviously and I truly believe that he has been more instrumental to the Lakers success than Pau Gasol THIS season given how many games Pau has missed. Mountain Drew held it down during the first two months of the season and hasn’t bitched or complained about his minutes or shots going down since Gasol returned. He just waits his turn and kills when he’s supposed to just like he did last night. If you want me to be really real, Chris Kaman deserved the nod over both Amare and Pau if we’re talking about an actual center playing in the game.

  • D’Angelo

iverson didn’T deserve to get into the team. What about Lee and Granger ?

  • Klemperer

    Yes! I’m happy for Crash.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Our bad on the email, BETCATS. We got you next season. Also got Crash a little love in next SLAM with more to come if he keeps up the All-Star play.

  • http://freeones.com jbn74sb

    I voted for Adam Morrison.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.co BETCATS

Ben, if crash gets any love from you guys, you know im buying it and possibly mutliple copies. I have 3 posters of that Wallace dunking on Portland you guys had in an issue a while back. Combining my 2 favorite things (wallace and slam) makes me happy.

  • http://www.behindtheback.webeden.co.uk Sam Raphael Chadwick

Im happy with these reserves Rondo deffinately deserves it and Rose is gunna be one of the premier point guards in the league being a Bulhave been nice to see noah but must say Horford is definately one of the true young centres in the league. In the west im even more happy to see Zach Randolph and Kevin Durant in the team.

  • chingy

The jsmoove and horford argument is totally legit because coaches can select Bosh as the C and jsmoove as the pf; jsmoove got robbed

Besides, who wants to see horford on the break in an all-star game over jsmoove? Anyone?

  • pache

  • chingy

    Cosign BET regarding SHAQ

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

    KD for MVP.

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

Three all stars for Boston, despite KG missing a lot of time, 2 for Atlanta, 2 for LA even though Pau was out for a long time, and the League leading Cavaliers with one All Star. Varajao deserved it.

  • guess who

Horford only made it because his team is playing well…but Bogut is a better player….even Noah deserved it over Horford. I dont know what the east coaches were thinking….are they just handing out All star berths these days….Rondo? What!?!!? Same situation….Boston has been abysmal since Garnett went out….Rondo cant carry a team like Derrick Rose…Bulls just beat the spurs, rockets, suns, and thunder at their homes. David Lee is also an all star before Horford. Question is……who should start at point guard for east……DERRICK ROSE!!!!!

  • J

@ BET: 1 power forward away? that’s a pretty strong statement there bud, i’d say 1 PF a deeper bench and a whole lotta experience.

  • Hussman25

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

Kaman should be in over Gasol. He missed too many days. Why does team record only play into the equation some times?

  • tavoris

I’d say leave Pierce at home & put Smith in too. I just can’t knock Horford making the team, because even with Smith & Crawford, the Hawks would be NOTHING without Horford.

  • TheFro

    Kaman>Pau. He missed 17 games!

Lee>Horford, although I’m not losing any sleep over this one.

There was a poster above that wrote something like “Finally Rondo gets his due!” Are you kidding me? Good player, but WAYYYY overhyped.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I thought Horford was one of the two wildcard picks that they make regardless of position.
If he’s not, and those picks are still out there, than maybe Josh Smith will still make it.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

I was gonna write something, but, I think I’ll just repost what Allenp said:
Allenp Posted: Jan.28 at 3:28 pm

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Now I’m certainly not mad– I don’t think anyone got in who didn’t deserve it. If I had the power to choose, I’d take out Horford and Pierce and put in Smith and Lee… and I personally think Kaman got snubbed up… I honestly don’t know who I’d take off to put Kamam in…

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

@TheFro: All of Boston’s fans, and there coach for that matter, firmly believe their starting 5 should be All Stars. The rest of us aren’t as delusional.

Allen, Horford got in as the center. I think Pierce and Rose were the wild cards. It will all be clear after TNT does the official announcement tonight.

I would say Josh Smith over Horford but other than that all the picks are spot on.

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

The All-Star game isnt the same without Shaq and it isnt as entertaining. I wish Chauncey wouldve made it but that just shows you how many great players that are in the league that deserve the all-star spot. If Rip wouldnt of gotten hurt for so long I think he shouldve made it and the same with KG.

  • Jake

Ugh,Paul Pierce.Double ugh to KG.Rondo deserves this.I wouldn’t take Pau out just because when he is in the game you can tell that the Lakers are a much better team.He is the glue guy for them this year. It’s a shame about Bynum not making it and Chauncey too.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

KG got voted in just like Iverson. Neither of them “deserve”
it based on this year’s stats, but I don’t mind cats making the team based on reputation and popularity if they are truly legends.
Paul Pierce is not a legend. He’s a beast, but Josh Smith has played better than him. I understand folks love David Lee, but he can’t hold Horford’s jockstrap on defense.
I think Kaman is nice, but I’m not mad that Pau made it over him. Kaman started off super strong, but he’s slumped a little in my opinion. Glad Z-Bo didn’t get slighted.

  • Tuomas

Nice reserves. No real complaints, the bigger thing is I checked the Hawks’s stats and realized Jason Collins is still in the league. And look, his production is even better than before. Last three games: 9 minutes played, two fouls, one missed shot. Some things never seize to amaze.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

The East could use some of the West’s bigs. Not to worry, though. Draft ’10′s sure to deliver some All-Star caliber PFs and Cs to the struggling teams out East.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Jacob, I hear you, but I’m certain Shaq will be making cameos and watching the King all weekend.

  • http://www.slamonline.com barnabusb

Clearly the people naming the reserves forgot that David Lee scored like 7,000 points on 3500 dunks in the rookie game. He could have brought that noise to the big stage. Boo-urns.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

…which also gets me wondering. Has any other All-Star MVP missed the Game the following year?

  • bigdoggchad

    Magic Johnson

  • dw24

Hate it, first Bynum isn’t amazing he’s over hyped, Gasol? No get him out and throw in Kaman, Bargnani needs to be in there along with David Lee and ATLien. Bynum is a puss I don’t know why everyone says these guys are stars when they don’t produce. I had to smile seeing DRose, DWill, and KD though, very deserving. And no Rudy?! Really? KG shouldn’t be starting nor Iverson. NBA where 8===D sucking happens.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Ryne: actually, quite a few players. Lenny Wilkens, Dave Bing, and Tom Chambers all took home the All-Star hardware then weren’t voted in the next year. Hell, Adrian Smith and Randy Smith showed up, got the All-Star MVP, then never were voted in ever again! So that’s five players before Shaq.
It’s also happened for several other reasons. David Thompson won it then was injured the next year, I think Shaq too in 2000. Rick Barry won it then decided he hated the NBA and jumped to the ABA. Paul Arizin won it then went to fight in Vietnam for the next two years. And yeah, Magic retired.

  • Sour Milk

Guess I’m fine with this… would take Lee over Horford and Billups over Z-Bo, but I’m not that upset… What’s the Lakers record with or without Gasol? Whoever said he shouldn’t be in there because of missed games is a jackass. And what’s this position fetish some of you have? let the best 12 play the game regardless of positions, then it’s an all-star game.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Horford over David Lee should NOT happen. Period.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Z-Bo would absolutely dismantle the Lakers’ big men, were Memphis to play Los Angeles in the playoffs. Z-Bo deserves this All-Star nod, and like I said before, he should have been an All-Star three years ago when he was putting up 24 and 10.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Allenp: David Lee might not be as good of a defender as Horford, but he’s a better rebounder and scorer.

  • riggs

@Allen: only time kaman has slipped has been when he was playing hurt and that was only for around 5 games ( i know i have him on my fantasy team) pau has NOW started playing like he should (i also know cause i have him on my fantasy team) lol.

  • fizzbuster

@matt nastase: Uh, remember that KG dude? Anyway, Horford? Really? Kaman deserved this.

  • J-Ro

Howard and Amare should challenge each other on how many oops each one can get during the game.

  • Brian

Kaman should replace Gasol just based on playing time alone. Kaman is having a career year and all that hard work is gonna be unrewarded. Josh Smith or David Lee should replace Horford and Pierce. Lee is Mr. Double Double and Mr. Consistency. Smith is one of the best all around players in the L and is a DPOY candidate annually. If Bynum was still playing at the level he was at the beginning of the season who would certainly be in, but he has kinda faded the last few months. You can’t argue Roy over Billups just because Roy has basically carried the Blazers when he has played and has kept them in playoff contention.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    Good for Deron. Long overdue.
Derrick Rose, meh. Not one else really, I guess.
Paul Pierce, meh. Reputation more than anything.
    Al Horford? Meh, OK.
    Poor Josh Smith.
    Good for ZBo.
    Poor Kaman.
Bynum, whatever. Gasol > you, despite his time off.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

You know, if you look at David Lee’s stats, it’s pretty redic he didn’t make it. Almost twenty and twelve on fifty three percent shooting. Christ, what do you have to do? Win?!?

  • Kendrick is God

    Kendrick for Horford anyone?

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

I feel bad for Billups. If he was still in the east, he’d be an All-Star every year. In the west, he has to deal with the far flashier point guards of Paul, Williams, and Nash. Sort of cruel.

  • Still ballin

  • Teddy-the-Bear

In a playoff series or clutch situation, Tim Duncan is still the best power forward in the league. He’s still the most reliable and gifted power forward today.
However, if I were going by night-in night-out production, Bosh is the best power forward in the league in terms of efficiency.

  • wilz

    Horfords a beast though

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I would rather have Al Horford on my team than David Lee.
    That is all.

David Lee is NOT a better rebounder than Horford. He gets more rebounds per game because nobody else on his team goes within 10 feet of the basket.

  • Cant Tell you

Al Horford plays better than j smoove

  • Young C

I would switch pierce with lee

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

David Lee has been a better rebounder then Al Horford his whole career. its not a new thing. and its probably because he flat out tries harder. either way there is an argument for both of them. and josh smith. my argument is who has directly influenced more wins. that player i think deserves the spot. my guess is josh smith

I would have put David Lee for Al Horford and Chris Kaman for Pau Gasol as David Lee is playing better ball plus you need the token white kid on the east as well

  • Orlando Green

WHAT!!!!!!!! NO T-MAC…lol just kidding. Aside from Horford, the picks are good! I’m happy that Rose made the team.

  • Orlando Green

    @dmonz .. Shaq as a Prop…thats too funny! props

  • Shadojoker

I definitely agree with Kaman > Gasol… and David Lee > Al Horford
but it is what it is…the coaches just didn’t see it like that..

  • http://slamonline.com dmonz

And if it’s gona be 3 Celts there, it would’ve been better if Sugar Ray was the 3rd one, he still hands down the best pure shooter in the L.. and can still score the rock better than anybody.. Rondo can w8

  • http://slamonline.com Shem

Happy with these selections, kaman and lee are on bad teams so i dont think they deserve it. And Chauncey shouldn’t go over Deron although he should go and Horford is deserving BUT josh smith is more deserving

  • http://www.slamonline.com kh

I would like to start by saying I’m not really a big Lebron fan, but could this be a testament to how good he really is, or more importantly how much better he makes those around him! I mean they have the best record in the league and it would be really hard to make an argument for one other Cav to be on the all-star team (yes this includes you Mo).
    Just a thought

  • andrew

To the dude who said Varejao should bve an all star LOL wash your mouth out with soap RIGHT NOW!

Side show Bob got no place at all star.

Lets face it pau made it to boost ratings from europe. If bynum or kaman were foreigners (true foreigners not just german passport holding americans) they would be there right now!

  • E.

WOW. Gasol over Kaman? Again all politics. I thought the selection was for the name on the back on the jersey, not the front. Gasol is good even though soft, but he hasn’t played every game like Kaman has and Kaman has better numbers. GASOL played in 29 games vs KAMAN playing all 41 so far. So Kaman leads all Centers in the LEAGUE in scoring yet still no love. We all know its because he is a Clipper.

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

I can’t believe someone is hating on David Lee. 20 and 12 is 20 and 12. Plus over the last month 5 apg? And his point guard is Chris f*cking Duhon. Re-read. CHRIS DUHON. The second worst starting pg in the entire league. C’mon man…

  • Jon

IT’S A DISGRACE! How is Al Horford in over Josh Smith or David Lee?! How how how?! IF the coaches wanna pick a back-up centre, surely you’ll choose Bosh or Lee!!! This is disgusting and I’m not watching. Absolutely furious!!!!! Hope Horford injures himself so Lee can replace him. Lee is by far the most derserving of players on the Eastern bench (for big men I mean).

  • http://www.addictedtobeauty.ca/ Kevin

Horford might not have the stats that David Lee does, but there is NO WAY i’m taking Lee over Horford if i’m a GM. no way in hell.

Josh Smith was very deserving this year.. he’s the only real snub, hopefully this doesn’t cause his career year to make a turn in the wrong direction..

Not sure Gasol should’ve made the west roster just coz he was injured, but talent-wise there’s no way he should be left off. keep in mind the NBA wants to be international – if you thought Gasol wasn’t gonna make it, you’re high.

  • http://m.twitter.com/BeeBopLive BeeBopLIVE

Are u serious no david lee smmfh that is dispicable, smdh

  • JoeMaMa

David Lee this year is like KD last year. Doing big things on a mediocre team. If they win, he’s in. But 50 point losses and a losing record do not look good for anyone. I feel like you can make a case for JSmith over Horford, but not Lee. The disparity in record seals the deal.

  • Largo

    Antawn Jamison

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariqُُ

    Aaron Brooks!

  • http://www.slamonline.com barnabusb

No Pistons this year. It’s the end of an era. *solitary tear rolls down my cheek*

  • Anthony

    WHERE IS T-MAC ????

ok joke, execpt for Horford everything’s fine

  • Bart

Man i’m devoed i wasted all that time voting for Tmac…

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Bryan: exactly who is worse than Duhon?

  • BasRutten

So no Kaman or Lee because of poor team record; only explanation right? Now LAL gets two, PHX gets two*(fan vote), BOS gets three, and ATL gets two. So why exactly is it that the team with the best record only has one? LMAO! The reasons for why some people don’t get votes are contradicted by the reasons others do get votes. All I can say is, if you believe Cleveland deserves only one all-star then you just sealed the MVP vote right there.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Team records do NOT and should NOT matter that much in terms of individual performance. I don’t see an All-Team game, I see an All-Star game.
And 20 and 12 is still better than 14 and 10 no matter how you look at it.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Aaron Brooks is getting shafted the same way Chauncey Billups is getting shafted–three great point guards in the West already.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

You know something is messed with the All-Star coaching selections when Mo Williams makes the team before Deron Williams.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Jukai, I think Bryan is going to say Mike Conley. But Conley has upside. Duhon isn’t as bad as ya’ll say, either.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

    good question jukai

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Good to see Rondo in that baby. He deserves this and he will be one to look out for in this game for years to come. play wit it.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Good selections by the coaches. Though I think Kaman shoulda made it instead of Pau, like a bunch of you guys already mentioned. And it’s hard to believe Shaq won’t be in it… hmm.

  • Webstarr

D Will might wanna shave before All Star Weekend. He doesn’t want to show up in his home town looking like Rick Ross

  • JoeMaMa

Teddy, records DO matter. How guys on the All Star team are on sub .500 teams? The starting five is for the fans; the reserves are merit based. The coaches obviously like winners. I think your boy Lee is ballin hard right now, don’t get me wrong. I’m telling you, though, that his exclusion is based on the fact that Horford is starting center for a top team, with a double double.

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

feel bad for Josh Smith… can’t believe you mentioned Bynum as a snub, haha, what a joke

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

Are Derrick Rose and Rajon Rondo acctually going to share the ball at some point? Can’t imagine any love lost between the two.

  • James

For those complaing about Horford over David Lee, Lee is averaging 0.3 bpg as a center. There are actually two sides of the court.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Fair enough, Joe. The coaches like winners. I believe that. That doesn’t mean they SHOULD pick the players based on wins though, does it? That’s where I disagree.

  • James

For those complaining about Al Horford over David Lee, Lee is averaging 0.3 bpg as a center. There are actually two sides of the court in the game of basketball. Most coaches notice this.

  • Jon

Speaking of records since you guys love that, it is total BS that the Suns, who were out of play-off contention before todays game against the Mavs, have 2 All-Stars??? I know its voted it and is BS. Duncan and Dirk should start, only 1 Sun should be on the team and that would open up a spot for a more derserving Kaman!

  • Jon

Most of your arguements make sense about Lee. I feel less anger toward Horford. Its just been too long since the Knicks had an All-Star or at least someone notable representing us. Robinson and his dunk-contests get abit annoying after awhile. Still feeling bad for J Smoove here.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2009/10/dre-miller-unhappy-with-bench-role/ titsd

Gerald Wallace deserves it. Without Wallace in the Cats now they would be owned.

SF with more than 10 boards a game plus the defense, he’s the reason y the cats are number 1 in defense.

It’s been a long while but finally they witnessed

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    No Greg Oden’s shlong?

  • Lazaruz

  • neaorin

To the “team records don’t matter” crowd: Jamison is averaging 22 and 9 despite playing with a legitimate center / double digit rebounder, and unlike Lee he’s a three point threat as sell. Where’s the outrage?

  • tomi

    Horford! WHY?

  • al

Have you guys realized Gasol has won more games than Kaman playing 12 less games?
Have you guys realized Lakers are 11-6 without Gasol and 24-5 with him?

  • http://www.gmail.com rushmelo

    Pau Gasol
    29 games?
    its damn frustrating for Kaman
he’s been putting solid numbers on a weak team team!
    same goes with David Lee
both have been consistent and seriously speaking to put up big numbers on a weak team is really difficult cause you have nothing to play for and hell lot of distractions when people around you dont gel with you

  • kobesbestfriend

how does last years allstar mvp not make the list?this allstar game is gonna suck donkey balls!

  • J

J-smoove shouldn’t be mad in horford’s selection, he should be mad with paul pierce on ASG. that was legit Josh’s spot.

  • JoeMaMa

I don’t know, J, Paul Pierce is keeping Boston right at the top of the east, and they’ve endured injuries to Garnett, Big Baby, and Daniels, not to mention aches and pains to others. He’s shooting about 47% from both the field and 3, and he’s a big reason why Boston’s still a force to be reckoned with. J Smoove has game, but Pierce deserves his spot.

  • JoeMaMa

Teddy, I don’t think it’s based solely on winners. But you can’t escape the negativity swirling around the team in New York right now, and you also factor in how Atlanta is a force these days. The coaches are human; I’m thinking they look at Lee like “SOMEone’s gotta put up numbers on that team” without digging much deeper. I think next year, if the Knicks land a big name, put up 10 more wins, and have Lee put up similar numbers (even minus a few boards/points), he gets it.

  • fragile

I’m surprised by how few people are mentioning Danny Granger as a snub. Shouldn’t he at least be in the conversation?

Horford deserves to be an all star..plain and simple..so all u David Lee lovers get over it..there, I said it..if anything j smoove should b there b4 Lee..wasn’t nobody lobbying Lee b4 they picked the reserves, now everybody’s coming out the the woodworks..Lee might b putting up good numbers but look at who he plays for…Horford is like the 14th option on the team and he stills averages a double double on less touches..And he plays defense unlike Lee…oh and Lee’s team is not even at .500 let alone in playoff contention…AI plz don’t play, same goes for Kg..yall are taking away from more deserving players and yall know it.

  • BostonBaller

Mr moobutter we do have a decent starting five but us real fans are not as delusional as you think. Rondo does deserve it, KG got in as someone mentioned b/c of the past (even though there aren’t many as good at his position in the East as he is. Lee over Pierce is iffy. Pierce puts in work on a good team and is keeping our record tight and Lee gets his doubles on a horrible team. (I love Lee but someone on the team has to be able to grab all of those misses) Switch those 2 players and see if Lee gets doubles w/ the C’s and I bet P double gets even higher numbers on the Knicks. Simple math. I’d like to see Ray Allen in it but he’ll never make another one after destroying the West w/ 3′s and getting robbed of the MVP . (Is that better noobutter?)

  • slimlim6000

fragile – Granger is on a losing team, and his production isn’t as good as last season. More deserving forwards.

On the Horford discussion, the guy does the intangibles. I guess that’s why the coaches picked him. Last season, Bosh was the center, but this time he defined the forward and they just couldn’t pick him at center. So when it comes to centers…it comes to Horford and Shaq… coaches must’ve put Lee and JSmooth as forwards…no way I’m putting those two in over Bosh and Pierce…in terms of centers…I’d put Shaq in cuz of the popularity vote and team record…Horford’s due for another season before we can consider him a legit all-star.

  • iamwhatiam30usac

    RONDO !! YES
I’m also happy to see Derrick Rose on the bench for this All Star.
I like Al Horford, but I’m sure David Lee AKA Daily Double deserves to be here in place of Al . Josh Smith and Chris Kaman should be in Dallas too .
(I’m French, excuse me there are some mistakes) .
    Peace SLAM .

  • T-Money

David Lee is not as good as his numbers suggest. How many GMs were willing to throw money at him last summer? I’ve said it in another post but Eastern conference teams would never trade Lee straigth up for Bargs, Noah, J-Smoove, Andy V or Beasley. And those guys aren’t even all-stars! So please, chill with the snub thing.

  • baden

horford put up 13 and 9, all star i think not

  • the_baller20

i am pretty happy with the reserves but seriously, where is David Lee. how much better does he have to get to make the ASG?? (sigh)

  • the_baller20

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

daid lee has been a double double guy basically his whole career t-money (minus his rookie year). his numbers suggest one thing and one thing only, he plays harder then most everyone he goes up against. who cares who has more skills, david lee does more with what he has. if his team was above .500 he would have been an all star no doubt about it.

  • BostonBaller

Jakai with the research on ASG MVP’s not making it back the following year.

  • http://mecwebb3@hotmail.com b*nasty

Ryne, you missed Bogut in your list. check the stats, more points that AL, more blocks then Lee and he still cleans the glass and not only blocks shots but takes charges which few big men do. i understand Al for winning, but if youre listing Lee or Lopez its crazy not to list Bogut, he plays both ends of the floor. watch the Bucks, just once, or just check the stats.

  • E.

They should just change the name to “The Most Popular Player Game” The clipper record is not Kaman’s fault. Its Dumbleavy’s. You know Kaman deserved to be in after reading so many posts that agree with this. These are the same people that bash the Clipps every day but agree Kaman deserves it over Gasol.

  • tavoris

didn’t Granger JUST come back like 3 weeks ago? definitely NOT an All-Star. Also, I have a problem with anyone who’s missed 15 games getting in too.

  • E.

There should at least be a rule that says you can’t miss more than 15 games. That way you reward a guy for playing EVERY game and managing to stay healthy. The only people agreeing with the Gasol selection are Laker fans. Everyone disagreeing are BASKETBALL fans.

  • boogster

I think if David Lee and Al Horford swapped their teams, they`ll probably match each other`s stat, so it`s insane to say Horford over Lee, or vice versa. It`s basically matter of W/L.

  • slamfan4life

  • Ben Flook

He’s not a reserve, but still i dont think Steve Nash should be the starting PG for the West. I think a lot of people would of been fooled by Phoenix hot start, if you compare there record (27-21) with New Orleans (25-21) then theres only two games in it. If Chris Paul was on Phoenix i think that they would by around 30-18 at this point in the schedule. Seems like Chris Paul is being slept on this year, in my opinion hes the most skilled player in the league, and it seems like on every play he has an asnwer for however the D plays him.

  • Maya Laku

I agree, Chris Kaman and David Lee should’ve been chosen to play in the ASG
