Andre Iguodala: Everyone’s Job at Risk

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Things are not going well in Philadelphia. The team is putrid (15-30), and everyone realizes that there are absolutely no untouchables, from the players to the front office.

Trade rumors have surrounded Andre Iguodala all season, but he realizes that he’s not the only person who could soon find himself with a new mailing address.

Iggy knows full well that he’s on the block, but he’s also fully aware that his job isn’t the only one on the line: Andre doesn’t necessarily think Eddie Jordan is the right coach for the team, and says that team president Ed Stefanski is also fighting to keep his gig.

The Philly Burbs reports on an unhappy Sixers locker room:

“I’m definitely not surprised,” Iguodala said. “In order for me to grow as a person, I have to deal with the bad times, as well as the good times … Until the next move comes and (a trade) happens or if I’m here, I need to fight through it. My ultimate goal has always been to win here. “As far as all that stuff goes, (Stefanski is) in a situation where he has to win and his job is on the line – the same thing for coaches and players. If you don’t win, anything can happen, no matter whose fault it is.”

Iguodala declined to say he’s convinced Jordan is the right coach for the Sixers. “I don’t know if that’s fair to say, being that it’s his first year and we’ve all had struggles,” Iguodala said. “Like he says, great players make coaches look good and bad players make coaches get fired. We all have to do better.”

A change of scenery might not be such a bad thing for some of the main players in this fiasco. And I suppose it’s only a matter of time until we find out who will be shipped out of town.

He’s supposed to be the “Captain” of this team and he’s talking like this… No rallying of the troops??? He is not a leader… He needs to go! He should have been gone yesterday! I never liked his game… He’s a fraud! He’ll never come back to town if he’s traded, he’s thru with this area… SMH! My Sixers have been downhill since Croche left town! Snyder should have taken him up on his offer years ago… Dre’s a Noodle!

  • Fat Lever

Hahahaha, Jordan’s comments about bad players get coaches fired sounds like he’s lining that up as an excuse once he is canned. I’ve been a Sixer fan since the days of Barkley, Hersey, Johnny Dawk, etc. I’ve had to deal with Shawn Bradley, Sharone Wright, and guys like Dana Barros being our franchise guy, but this season has been the most difficult out of all of them as a fan. Eddie Jordan is, undoubtedly, one of the worst hires as a coach for this franchise ever. I’ve watched almost every game this year and he makes the most inane decisions and he only “settled” on his 9 man rotation 30 or so games into the season, after people were killing him for that. I also have to say Iguodala must be traded. People always say, “How can you be down on him, have you seen his stat sheet every night?”. Yes, I have, and they are empty stats. He has not improved one area of his game considerably, like a “star” player should, 5 years into the league. Nice enough guy, above average player, but clearly not a #1 or even a #2 option, yet is being paid like a #2. If we can get him out of here too, I’m all for it. Can you all sense the frustration I’ve been dealing with this season? Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

  • Hussman25

@Fat: you explained the city’s fustration completely!

  • JoeMaMa

The worst case scenario this year was that the 76ers wouldn’t have a good point guard to run the ship. And they don’t, and they’re losing. They should ship Dalembert to Portland, who needs a big, and take back Dre Miller, who doesn’t like the team’s style of play. I mean, why not? Desperate times…

  • Kobedamvp

I would luv to c iggy n mavs jersey

  • Trout

    Sixers key mistakes:

    Trading Iverson
    Elton brands contract
    Andre Igoudala’s contract
    Hiring a reletavley inexperienced coach

    On the positive:

    They are not the Nets.

  • Fat Lever

Joe, we have a very good young, true PG in Jrue. When I watch him play, he shows flashes that he gets it, he knows how to play the position at this level. That’s why I dont understand why not just get him 35 mins a game? Why is EJ potentially ruining his development so that he can play AI? Jrue can play, and even if we miss out on the John Wall sweepstakes, I won’t be upset because of this kid. And I’m saying this after I was sure he was going to be a bust(still possible, but doesn’t look likely) and wanted Maynor instead.

  • Hussman25

MAYNOR would have suited this style of play alot better than Jrue, but Jrue has been playing well recently… He’s young and ull have to wait; while Maynor would have been able to play now… We wont get Wall, but if Iggy goes, Wesley Johnson will be welcomed in Philly with OPEN ARMS!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Iggy’s gotta go NOW. This guy is not a franchise player he and has not improved his game and the Sixers are not going to win sh*t if this guy is there go to guy. Jordan is not that great of a coach either the guy has A.I’s minutes split into 7 minute spans so it will be fair for the rest of the team. WTF? and I think they should pick up T-Mac now and get his big ass contract. AI and T-Mac would be sick and they should give AI the green light to do what he wants just like the old days. Philly has lost way to many games by less than 5. They would have been a 6th or 5th seed if they had won all those close games since A.I. returned.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Man I used to back Iggy. I always said just give him a couple more years, he’s young. He will grow into a leader….eventually. I was the biggest fool on the earth for believing that one. When A.I. first left, this was his team for the taking. He didn’t live up to the expectations though and I now that he is saying other people’s job are up for the taking is stupid of him. He has the tools, he just doesn’t have that motive to be a leader. He is a follower and I guess he is cool with that. play wit it.

  • JoeMaMa

Fat (your name is the best on Slam), I hear you on Jrue, but if you want him playing big minutes, then the expectations have to change to this being a low year. I just think that a team with Brand, Iggy, Tyoung, Lou, and even AI could put something together, esp. this being the east. But no quality PG makes that really tough. Maybe dangle Brand? You guys have speights (sp?)

  • rikson

Youll go nowhere with Iggy! Youll go nowhere with brand and nowhere with AI…. All overrated and this is the natural result!

  • http://myspace.com/rsaenz24 RoG23

iggy could be a really good 2nd banana. but he is good in philly. if u wanna cut anyone look at brand. and unless ai comes off the bench, he should go. if they didnt have brands contract they could have most definatly grabbed a star this summer. idk any details on brands contract btw. except its heavy.

  • Fat Lever

Joe, I’m willing to deal with a couple of down years if that means we’re building toward something. But, we’re not, and we’re pretty much in purgatory right now. And we have a moronic coach that has no semblance of any sort of plan. And watching the last game against the Bucks, it’s clear Dre has checked out. That’s not the characteristic of a leader. As far as Brand, I think he still has game left, and I actually think you need a player like him to play successful playoff basketball. I realize he’s not the player he was, but it’s obvious that he plays hard, plays tough(which no one on this team, except for AI, seems capable of), and when given mins is prob the best player on the team. It’s also obvious that Jordan has an issue with Brand, displayed by the move to the bench. This entire team is a mess, from top to bottom. We need one of the following 3 SG/wings in this draft: Wesley Johnson, Evan Turner, or Xavier Henry. We need a 2 that can shoot, with size, that can initiate his own offense should it stall. Again, I can deal with 20-30 win seasons for 2 or 3 years if we’re getting progressively better and have a REAL plan in place to contend in a few years, which right now, is laughable.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

Pretty funny. How obvious is it that the Sixers would be a ot better off playing Lou Williams, Thad Young and Marreese Speights major minutes? Everyone on here blasted me when I said that the Sixers buried themselves long-term by signing Iggy and Brand to oversized deals. I just hope the Rockets don’t take the bait and get stuck with Iggy’s deal for the next 4 years, I’d honestly rather have Ariza for 7-9 mill than Iggy for 12-14 mill a year.

  • Fat Lever

ciolstar, I’m not sure how much of the Sixers you’ve watched, but while Speights is good offensively, he is that much worse defensively. Until he works on that, he can’t be a legitimate starting 4/5 in the league. He has to improve that area. Lou Will is ideally suited to come off the bench as a sixth man, kind of like Barbosa. And Thad? He was supposed to take a big step forward this year, and has regressed. But that’s probably Jordan’s doing more than anything else. As you can tell, I’m fired up about the abysmality(I think I just made that word up, that’s how bad it is) of this season and team.

  • J-Ro

Just because Iggy is making comments doesn’t mean he doesn’t wanna be a leader. Are we forgetting that Kobe Bryant wanted out of L.A. when they were going trough a rough patch. I’m not saying Iggy is a great leader but why would they trade him when Brand and Dalembert aren’t producing sh*t.

  • JoeMaMa

J-Ro, asking Dalembert to produce is like asking an old woman to have a baby: it ain’t possible. Trade Brand, play the youngsters, get a good pick, get ready for next year. Fat, you get Evan turner, John Wall, or Xavier Young and you’ve got a nice youth movement.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    Iggy Iggy Iggy
    Can’t you see
Sometimes your dunks just hypnotize me
And I just love your fancy ways
Won’t you ship out to the Cavs today

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Iggy is the best second option in the league. If the Cavs get him he would flourish. But he needs to work on his shot its very inconsistent

  • Fat Lever

Pardeep, please tell me that was a joke. Off the top of my head, here are 2nd options that are light years ahead of Dre…Pau, Chauncey, Amar’e, Boozer, Pierce and Allen. I’d even take LaMarcus over Dre. I’m telling yall outside of Philly, he’s overrated like crazy. You guys just see the stat lines, you can’t be watching the games. If you were, you’d understand where we’re(Philly fans) coming from.

  • J-Ro

@ JoeMama that’s why I’m insisting in them trading Brand and Dalembert. Brand is never going to be the same player he used to be and Dalembert can’t defend anymore. Your right they should start preparing for next season…….oh and finding another coach might help too….

  • mems

iggy to houston! iggy to houston!! c’mon iggy come to houston!!!

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Andre Iguodala…’dre…nowdays everybody wanna talk like they got somethin to say but nothin comes out when they move they lips , just a bunch of jibberish and Ferry acts like he forgot about Dre…Dre is a doctor…Dr.Pepper…that Pepper chick from Iron Man was hot…”Iron Man” by Black Sabbath…Ozzy…drugs…Birdman…brr…same sound as when you’re cold…LeBron is ice cold in the 4th…Bron will change his number to 6 next season, which will make it look like “69″ when him and Dre stand side-to-side…69 on top…awesome…almost as awesome as Fog Raw outlet pass to Bron who alleys Chief Blocka who THROWS DA HAMMER DOWN!
    Done deal.

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

Im wondering what is wrong with Elton Brand?!?! He was like a beast only a few years ago! Maybe its the offense. Maybe the former injuries are bothering him. I dont know but I dont think he should be paid for what his production is.

  • Jack

The team just has no chemistry at all anymore, I’m watching them play the Lakeshow right now. The only ones who seem to want to pass are Holiday and Iverson. On the bright side, they do have Holiday, he’s gonna be a nice PG, he seems to understand the game really well.

  • Fat Lever

What’s crazy is that watching this Laker game, our supposed franchise player was, at best, the 4th best player on the floor. Sixers basketball!

  • jcs14

Iggy needs to go to the Wolves

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Like I said in my earlier post give AI the green light and trade Iggy or make him the second option and AI getting the green light this team looked much better and AI might have said f*k this at half and just decided to take over and it was a sick game but Sixers still lost. Against the defending champs though so if this was happening every game against 90% of the league the Sixers would be in the playoffs.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Can the Iguodala for McGrady rumours finally come true then?
    That’d be great.
    kthxbye

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

why is lou williams getting 8 mins a game? he was such a great player last season, and early this one. now ai, and for some reason jrue are gettin all the minutes, willie green too. philly is a mess.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

@Tarzan — I have no idea why Jrue is in there. AI played great tonight, and Lou Williams should be starting alongside him and playing his 38 minutes. It shouldn’t even be an issue.
Also, Iggy is no leader. Philly is definitely a mess.

  • http://www.nba.com/playerfile/sean_marks/index.html Michael NZ

My thoughts on this: Iguodala looks remarkably similar to Sydnor off The Wire.

  • J

    Anton is Nostradamus/Shakespeare.

  • Fat Lever

This is why you guys don’t understand. Lou and AI have been starting this year, and other teams have destroyed us offensively, why? Because when you have 2 guards that top out at 6’2″ and have a semi-competent coach, you go on the block and post up one of those guys. That is why Jrue is in there. He’s our best on the ball defender, and despite what he showed last night, he can definitely play. He actually plays the PG position properly, distributing the ball. Lou and AI DO NOT do that. I love what AI has done for us as a franchise, but he shouldn’t be starting. I would like this franchise to build for the long term, and with him starting, he stunts the growth of guys like Jrue and Lou, which is absolutely critical to the long term. And Michael, I always thought Sydnor looked like Paul Pierce.

  • Joel

If we do end up trading Iguodala, I’d like for us to draft Damion James. The guy is a great scorer.

  • Joel

Our biggest problem defensively is the lack of energy and rotating on pick and rolls. Last night we finally showed some energy, but that was only because we played Kobe and the Lakers. We give up a ton of wide open layups under the rim because other teams have a good offensive system of screens that we can’t rotate against. Ever since Jordan has been here, our defense has been significantly worse than last season when it was decent.

I’m opposed to trading anyone right now. I think we have enough talent to compete, it’s just that Jordan has completely ruined this team. Now we’re not even trying anymore. Last season, we were a .500 team. This year, Lou Williams and Allen Iverson have replaced the offensive production missing from Andre Miller last year. We also got back Elton Brand who’s starting to play well again. We’ve already beaten the Celtics and Mavericks this year. Clearly we have some talent.

  • Joel

Iguodala is still our best player.

He’s easily our best defender, one of our best rebounders, our best passer, and can create his own shot as well as shots for others. I’m not saying he’s worth his contract but he’s a lot better than what people on here are saying about him.

What I don’t like is that he’s showing no energy out there. I agree that he isn’t a leader, but that doesn’t make him a bad player. With the right coach and setting, he can easily be a star in this league.

  • Joel

The biggest problem with our personnel is that everyone on our team played 2 years or less at college or just came straight out of high school. We’re a team that isn’t very developed but has a lot of raw talent. Unfortunately, we’ve never had the coaching or leadership to help our players develop. Andre Iguodala only had Allen Iverson to learn from, which wasn’t the best thing for him. Samuel Dalembert didn’t start playing basketball until he was 15 or so. He’s always had a lot of raw talent as you can see by his occasional great games where he grabs 20 rebounds. Even Elton Brand left college early to go to the NBA. This is why we need to start drafting well developed players like Damion James or Wesley Johnson.

  • http://ww.kb24.com The Seed

They messed up in signing Elton Brand to a contract, should have saved the money. They have a good team, Lou is not a point guard and letting Miller leave was dumb, especially with the success they had last season giving the Magic problems. This new AI needs to step up and shut up and play.

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

Eddie Jordan fcuked this team up from the get go.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Eddie Jordan’s going to get fired in the next week. If they loose to the Nets its over Eddie may as well pack his stuff after the game but if they don’t win a game or two in the next 6 games I am pretty sure he is out.

  • http://www.twitter.com/PDXGayBball dma

    iggy to phoenix somehow?

  • NBA kid

kevin Martin for iggy? kings need to lose kmart asap and apparently Philly needs to lose iggy asap

  • http://slamonline.com dmonz

Iggy should stay.. he’s a versatile g-f capable of clutch plays.. Kmart needs a good PG to excel and Philly doesn’t have one.
I’d say let Brand go, and try to snatch Amar’e

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

Iggy can straight out play. He’s the best player on the team but he’s clearly not franchise/superstar player material. Not all players are cut-out to be the leader of the team, even if they are the best player. What they need is a true leader on the floor. AI has never been that type of guy and nobody else has that mentality either. IF Brand was playing to his previous potential, then people would not be complaining about his contract. Trading Iggy is not the answer, unless they get some quality leader for him (not just young talent because they have young talent already that they don’t know how to develop).
