Could David West End Up in Cleveland?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

With the Trade Deadline exactly one month away, there is no shortage of trade rumors around the L. The latest and greatest involves the Cavs and Hornets; word out of Ohio is that Cleveland is interested in the services of one David West.

The bait the Cavs are using is everyone favorite Bond movie villain, Big Z.

The Morning Journal reports:

A league source said the Cavs have also made a run at Hornets power forward David West. The Cavs are dangling center Zydrunas Ilgauskas out there for the Hornets, who want to avoid paying the luxury tax at all cost.

The Hornets could buy out Ilgauskas’ contract and waive him. Then he could return to the Cavs in 30 days. Or they could hang onto him and let his $11.5 million deal expire after this season.

If the Cavs got West, perhaps it wouldn’t be a high priority to get Ilgauskas back in a month. Anderson Varejao could play many of the backup minutes behind center Shaquille O’Neal like he does now.

With the Hornets struggling to remain in the Playoff race this season, it wouldn’t exactly be a shocker if they dealt West. However, getting an aging center in return (and then waiving him almost immediately) would likely not sit well with the already frustrated Chris Paul.

As for the Cavs, the addition of David West would be a boon for their front line. And the possibility of re-acquiring Ilgauskas makes the deal that much more tantalizing.

If this happens Chris Paul is gone first chance he gets. Period.

  • RedRum

The Hornets team is being dispatched. It would be a great pick for the Cavs. I think the Cavs should go another way though… maybe not this year, but in the future. How about moving Lebron to the 4, and just picking up a nice long winger, which is easier to come by in the NBA.

  • riggs

getting rid of Z is incredibly stupid, and im not even a cavs fan.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Th3_R3al_Chris

I think David West would fit in perfectly with the Cavs and could make them a favorite to win it all this year. Shaq loves power forwards who can shoot jumpers and David West is among the best at his position that can do that. However, if the Hornets do this just to avoid luxury tax, then CP3 needs to bail. If they do this to get under the cap so they can sign a D-Wade or Chris Bosh then that would be a major upgrade from David West since he is far from the “all-star” he has been perceived to be in years past. He’s a good role player and not much else.

  • LeoneL

    Nope.

  • Yesse

They should keep Z, but Shaq also is good with power forward’s who can shoot.

  • J

This deal makes no sense for the Hornets. Why would a team so desperate to get out of the luxury tax take on an additionaly 2 million dollars this year thereby making it tougher for them to… get out of the luxury tax.

In order for this deal to work, the Hornets would have to give up multiple contracts, and even then Z is making more then West plus one of our minimum players so we’d still be taking on additional cash . But,now we are at the league minimum 13 players so we can’t just pay a team to take one of our players because we would then have to get another player.

You can’t make an argument that a team will make a move to save money and then have the move cost that team more money. It doesn’t make sense.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Th3_R3al_Chris

Essentially this would be a killer trade for the Cavs, since David West provides all that Ilgauskis by stretching the defense and hitting the long jumpers, while also giving them a more athletic option who can post up, drive, and defend better than Z. If the Hornets bite, the Cavs have to go for this. It’s also a super trade because it will give Lebron another young running mate for the next few years, providing more incentive to re-sign.

  • neaorin

The Cavs are not trading Z *unless* the other team agrees to buy him out so he can return to Cleveland. Having said that, no way the Hornets deal West for expirings unless they *want* to get rid of Paul. Jamison is still the most realistic target for the Cavs.

  • Cant Tell you

Not even the cavs think there true contenders

  • J

Also, this move is terrible defensively. Neither West nor Varejao can guard Rashard Lewis, and West and Shaq is a pick and roll disaster.

And, there is more value for West expecially with so many teams having 2010 cap space.

And again on the money argument, the Hornets are still in the thick of things for the playoffs, and this would knock them out of the playoff hunt which would also cost them a load of money.

  • michael scorn

This just proves that there are too many teams in the NBA when year after year, almost half of them give up trying to win in January and do whatever they have to do to save money. This leads to 75% of the games being uncompetetive/or of no significance.

  • Sparker

food for thought: the lakers had no answer for the cavs when they went huge with shaq and z on the floor together on christmas day

  • rav

yup – total joke if these sorts of trades continue – once a team trades you you shouldnt be allowed to resign with that same team as a free agent or get traded back there

  • Mvp23100

This would be a killer move especially with the cavs getting in alot of contenders asses already hopefully if they do it they can get z back because he is cleveland hes been there since the d anderson s kemp days

  • LOAF

    FREE CP3

  • michael scorn

I thought CP3 was this magical point guard that made everyone around him better. Isn’t that why they wanted to give him the MVP in 2008? Well, maybe he doesn’t make everyone around him beter like everyone said.

  • lsuhornet17

Hornets aren’t even listening to any offers for DWest. They are only about $500,000 over the luxury tax and only need to trade a min. salary player to get under the tax. They are not going to trade West.

  • Mvp23100

This would be a killer move especially with the cavs getting in alot of contenders asses already hopefully if they do it they can get z back because he is cleveland hes been there since the d anderson s kemp brev knight days

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

@neaorin, you can’t “agree” to make a team buy someone out just so they can sign back with the original team. That’s illegal in the NBA. The cavs for sure want to get Z back but its a risky move. And if you look at it on the Hornets side, it doesn’t make much sense. I don’t think this trade will go down…
And if it actually does, CP3 probably ask for a trade.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

It’s pretty much a done deal, open your eyes people. David West…17 foot assasin…a footlong from Subway…the fat Jared guy…Jared Dudley…Spike Dudley…brother…Step Brothers…Will Ferrell…hilarious…laugh so hard you’ll choke…choke like the Chargers…has anyone seen my phone charger?…phones make calls…somebody call 911, David West is burning up the court floor in Cleveland.

  • The D Train

@Anton – Fact: Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

  • robb

Nice, now he’ll be able to play with the biggest douche bag in the league: Lebron James.

By the way it’s official: He’s not in the slam dunk contest. Obviously. Too afraid of Shannon Brown I suppose.

  • onlyclipsfanonslam

    CP3 just had an aneurysm.

  • http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3445/3357407353_c868c2d95c.jpg larrylegend

@robb: has anyone ever seen lbj do a 360 dunk…me not. he would be embrassed in the dunk contest, but would still winning it because he’s lbj…

  • huey

if David west becomes a cav(hopefully)he better not be expecting the same amount of shots he has here in new Orleans, but in return he(DW30)would get a ring.along with the rest of cleveland.

  • J-City

Let CP3 go… The Hornets are run like a mom and pop shop. He deserves better. I think this eats away at him, look how he reacted when Rondo was talking junk.
That being said, the Cavs would rule the East if this happens. Who would guard Rashard Lewis? Have you seen his numbers this year? I’m pretty sure he misses Hedo. We’ll give him back for Vince :P

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

LBJ could do 5 different dunks from the ft line. who cares about a 360

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    - David West is not young
    - David West does not improve the Cavs Defense
    - You have shaq, why do you want to put another big on the block?
But if they do get Big Z back 30 days later, this trade is great

  • J

I love how the the Hornets’ front office is a joke and CP3 should be traded simply because the Cavs are OFFERING a terrible deal to them. That’s a bit unfair.

They haven’t been that cheap since they signed CP3, they just don’t want to go over the luxury tax. Look at their total salary. They actually have a higher total than most other teams.

Nobody said that Miami was a joke, and D Wade should be traded when they were sucking it up, or simply mediocre last year or this year. It is big market bias plain and simple.

And Paul does make people better (see 2 all-star games for David West and Rasual Butler’s numbers last year).

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

cosign your david west point – But Rasual is having the same year this year, with less minutes – And its plainly obvious that NOH is more worried about the luxury tax then anything else. Remember the Tyson Chandler to OKC trade last season? They were getting back only expiring contracts. – SO your wrong, itsnot big market bias, its true

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

I guess one D.West was not enough.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

What ever will they do with the jersey names?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

^Gotta see what they’re doing over there in ATL with Joe Smith and Josh Smith..

  • rob

    @larrylegend, yeah, you’re probably right.

  • David Moore

New Orleans and Charlotte should make a deal to send D.J. Augustin and someone to New Orleans for CP3. It works great on both sides. CP3 goes home to a contender and DJ goes back to his roots as well (being from New Orleans). Then, they can send David West wherever they want…LOL!

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Th3_R3al_Chris

Pants on the ground, pants on the ground, lookin’ like a fool with your pants on the ground. Gold in your mouth, hat turned sideways call your self a cool cat, lookin like a fool while you walkin downtown with your pants on the ground.

  • http://www.realultimatepower.net doyouwantmore

Kevin Garnett to Chris Paul: Get out of there while you’re young dude.

  • J

Sual’s 3% is way way down this year and actually his minutes are the same. I’d say that’s probably because of fewer wide open 3′s. Yes, trading him was pure salary dump.

Yes NOLA is worried about the luxury tax just like Miami, Chicago, and alot of other teams. Journalists just give more burn to “The Hornets are broke!!!” storyline then anyone else.

As for the Tyson trade… wouldn’t it have made the Hornets better last year? The would have gotten Smith and Wilcox. Both were healthy, Tyson wasn’t. Because he was hurt we fell to the seven spot, and got slammed by Denver due largely to our thin bench, Smith and Wilcox would have helped greatly with that.

I love Ty, but look at how many games he has played. If that deal would have went through we could have used our 13 million in expirings (Rasual, Daniel, Hilton) to go after a big like Camby, Dalembert or a wing and a big like Delfino and Diop. We would have had alot of options.

  • http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3445/3357407353_c868c2d95c.jpg larrylegend

@nbk: tell me 3 and i am satisfied…i remember the hs dunk contest he participates in, he won, but doesn’t deserve it and the crowd definetly expected more.

  • Jose

IF they get BIG Z back then its a good idea.other tan that nu uh sry

  • http://myspace.com/weezyleezy337 GametimeWeezy

With all the moves the Cavs are making im gonna laugh so hard if Lebron doesnt even stay in Cleveland. The ONLY thing this team doesnt have is a 4 that can shoot. If they add a David West or a Antawn Jamison it should be enough to put them over the top. But it doesnt even matter cuz if Garnett is healthy in the playoffs he’s locking them up. BTW speaking of Cav 4′s… that was a maad funny line by Russ Bengston in this issues Slam of the Month…Varejao the flopper lol…”What if i challenge just one shot, how bad could it be” hahaha

  • J

seriously who’s the other J posting on this site? cause that’s not me posting above.

  • J

the two things i wish for from all this trade talk, are.. for it to happen, and for us to get Z back.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Windmill – Through the Legs – Normal – Two Hand Tomahawk – Off a Bounce (which would take 5 tries). Idk if it would be deserving of a win, but its a realistic option considering he has jumped from where jordan did, during a game, in traffic (kinda)

  • http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3445/3357407353_c868c2d95c.jpg larrylegend

    from the stripe…c’mon :) …anyway, we will never know…

The Hornets DEFINITELY need to work out what their playing at. The game of ‘saving money’ by getting rid of your second best player doesn’t sit right at all. Particularly from the notion that you start with CHRIS PAUL and DAVID WEST and you have a pretty great PG/PF combo to build a decent franchise upon. How about if they move Peja and Okafor first?

  • therighttoremainsalient

David West could just sit on the perimeter and shoot the deep 2 or 3 ball like Z does bit with a little jump to the shot.

  • therighttoremainsalient

At the end of the day however, “a league source” really is just rumours much like New Idea or WHO magazine and has no basis upon truth whatsoever. So I’m not fazed. LeBron however did promise to compete in the dunk comp (however he didn’t shake hands on it…) and therefore he is about as trustworthy as a league source goes.

  • J

I guess there are two J’s. Again, I don’t see how the very fact that Cleveland OFFERED this move is anyway a reflection on the Hornets.

Having said that, I’d rather keep Okafor than West, and long-term the two are not a good pair because noether are quick or long. Having said that, Meka is a better defender and a little bit younger. Also he is a center which is harder to find, so I’d rather keep him.

  • http://www.fantasticfansite.com Fontaine

Let West go to Cleveland… that way CP3 can bounce to NYC.
