Joe Johnson Unimpressed With ATL Crowd

Um, Joe, slamming your hometown fans isn’t exactly the best way to gain their support: “A few years ago, whenever the Atlanta Hawks tipped off at Philips Arena, visitors could count the small clusters of fans in the seats and wonder how the team managed to stay in business. I asked Hawks star Joe Johnson, one of the 2010 free agents, if Atlanta’s homecourt advantage has gotten any better as the team improved. He didn’t try very hard to sugarcoat the answer. ‘Don’t get me wrong, it’s the home team and I enjoy playing there and I enjoy when the fans do come out,’ Johnson said. ‘But by no stretch of the imagination have we got one of the best home crowds. We don’t. I can’t really even say it’s getting there. In the playoffs, yeah, they’re there. Throughout the regular season, it’s not much of a big difference from what it was. It’s different, but it’s not that big of a difference than what is was when I first got there.”‘

Clearly wants out… but his team is winning…

  • ellis.d

i don’t like the sound of that.
    please don’t go, Joe.

  • oddball

Well it is true…those hawks fans suck, even though they have one of the most fun to watch teams around.

ATL Crowd unimpressed with Joe Johnson right now too.

Co Co, you only have to put up with him till june.

Wathing games this year, I’ve noticed a lot of the arenas are empty aside from the carefully placed fans located where the cameras are. Maybe its just a sign of the times? That being said, you can come up to chicago, Joe. We’d be happy to have ya.

  • Talar

he CLEARLY wants out…and he’s gonna get out, free agent 2010. Come back to boston Joe!

  • tavoris

It’s not a problem with the players, it’s that darned ownership dilemma. George Shinn put the city of Charlotte thru the same BS back in the day.

he CLEARLY wants out…and he’s gonna get out, free agent 2010. Come back to boston JJ!

Yeah, not a great crowd at all. I was watching an ATL game a couple of weeks ago, they were on a big run to close out the game, and one could hardly hear the crowd at all.

Unimpressed is the right word for it.

  • Rachel

Well, Joe could always say he’s slamming the ones who stay away, not the ones who come…

  • SWIFTboy

He’s talking shit about fans who are not coming to games. What’s the worst that could happen, they EXTRA don’t come to games?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I’m sorry ATL fans, Joe Johnson is really nice but will never lead you anywhere. He’s not a first option on a contending team. Atlanta should follow the Detroit model and spread the wealth. They let everyone get theirs for the first 42 and it’s working then they iso JJ in the clutch like he’s a Wade/Bron/Kobe/Melo…

  • BJ

Joe is a slouch. He never steps up consistently so why should the crowd. Don’t get me wrong. I am a season ticket holder and recognize Joe’s skill, but he hasnt led us to a championship, so why are we just in dire need to keep him. We are not in the elite with him. We aren’t. Be honest. We are a good team, but championship….come on….we are about as close to that as I am to the sun.

  • Don

wow. he could have at least said that the crowd is getting better. and yeah, the fanbase does not deserve that team too. i’d watch all the home games that i can just to see josh smith grab those alley oops!

  • http://bulls.com airs

should come to the bulls. had consecutive sellouts for years, and still are nearly seling out every night.
although all the fans in 100 level are the golf clapping type people…

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

to our Hawks regulars here: why has the home crowd been so anemic? is it because the team’s been so bad the past decade that it’s now a trend?

  • tavoris

albie, the ownership killed the fan’s spirit.

  • http://www.euroleagueadventures.com Nick Gibson

The irony in that being that our ownership conglomerate is called “Spirit, LLC.”

  • boogster

i would agree with JJ. Anyone who watched Hawks-Cavs game the other night would agree. DJ goes LET`s GO HAWKS, and crowd goes mumble jumble, if I had shouted from my home in Ireland, it would definitely have heard in Philips arena.

i went to game 6 against the Heat last year. HUGE GAME FOR OUR FRANCHISE, and the crowd looked like it was at a funeral.. They were in their seats nearly the whole game, and disappointingly quiet. When I stood up and tried to get into it and encourage those sitting around me, they looked like mute sheep. There were four people sitting behind me, each wearing Bibby or Pachulia jerseys, and the lady finally asked me to sit down. I told her that it’s the playoffs!!! she said, “well we’re big fans too, we come to alot of games” .. HAHAHA typical Atlanta ‘fan’. Lazy and uninvolved. I was embarassed as a fan, thinking about what they players thought of us.

  • frank

i know Joe said earlier in the season that the team needs to share the ball, but honestly, even as a fan of his, i admit that he holds the ball too much AND IS VERY PREDICTABLE especially at the end of halfs/games

  • http://astrokidz.blogspot.com T.J.

Alot of people can’t afford to go to the games and/or live too far away to drive to them. Then alot of people that go to the games act “Too Cool” to cheer or whatever. Theres alot more behind the scenes telling why people don’t go. You can’t be mad because alot of people aren’t even from ATL and just live there. I think if they make the ECF or get a chip then the fans definately will come out. For now we gotta get the consistency right. Nobody wants to go to a game and see Nate Robinson drop 40+ on their home team in an OT loss…. I understand where JJ’s coming from and he’s loved in ATL but the team has to work some things out themselves first.

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

In Soviet Russia, ATL crowd unimpressed by Joe Johnson.

  • http://imflashy.com C

Lmao @ Anton….. Better shut up b4 the skinner comes to get u

  • Zach

JJ you won’t be saying that if you go to Chicago. you put on for them, and they put on for you. United Center won’t let you down.

  • http://ajc.com rock

Slow, average Joe, complains about fans,we should be complaining about your average game. Let him go just like Boston,Phoenix did. Remember he was brought here on the pretense he could play pointguard, what a joke let him go so some other team can pay average Joe. P.S. maybe we will cheer more if you shot more than 1 free-throw in 45 minutes of playing time.

  • ClydeSays

It’s going to take more that 2 winning seasons to bring people back.

  • http://ajc.com rock

I was a hawks fan before JJ, will be after- players come and go, maybe he needs a change of scenery. It’s hawks fault he make so much not his. Get all you can get.

  • Chris

You will always play to a sold out arena in NY Joe!

  • http://www.luketynan.blogspot.com litetitan

maybe they should take out the seats, and replace them with larger lazy-boy recliners? you would have a “full house” AND it would be very very comofrtable.

  • SeanJaye88

Being a Hawks fans who has purchased tickets for every home game in January? This pisses me off. This will make it a little easier to swallow he exit in June.

  • http://www.facebook.com/backwerdz Marcus

He is 100% right. Our fans are one of the quietest in the league. Once we start to lose, our fans don’t cheer louder and help the team rally back. We start to f**king boo. And u expect the players to want to stay here? GTFO
