Monta Ellis/Ray Allen Swap?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

It’s Trade Talk season, so you should expect these types of rumors for the next couple of weeks. My apologies in advance.

The latest out of Beantown is that the Golden State Warriors want to trade Monta Ellis, and are looking at Ray Allen (and his expiring deal) as a possible option. For now, however, it sounds like a far-fetched dream on both sides of the equation.

From CSN New England:

While the Celtics have maintained repeatedly that they have no intentions of moving any of their core guys between now and the Feb. 18 trading deadline — and I believe ‘em on this one — multiple league sources confirmed today that the Golden State Warriors are giving some thought to putting together a trade package that would involve Monta Ellis going to Boston in exchange for Allen.

The Warriors see rookie Stephen Curry as the face of the franchise moving forward. One league source said the Warriors believe that Curry won’t develop at the rate they would like as long as Ellis is around.

Danny Ainge, Boston’s president of basketball operations, has talked to a number of teams about a number of players recently. But it doesn’t appear that this is a deal he has given any serious thought to considering. Ainge has said repeatedly that he wants to see how the Celtics, as they are currently constructed, play together when relatively healthy. Boston has yet to play a game this season with an entirely healthy roster.

For what it’s worth, Ray Allen says he’d love to stay in Boston. And members of the media in the Bay Area aren’t buying the trade talk at all.

Still, it’s a story worth keeping an eye on. Just don’t lose any sleep over it.

Trade ME8 for hinrich @ CHI. DRose and ME8 for the Bulls backcourt. then trade Pargo, Jerome James and Brad Miller for Amare.

Whoever compared Monta to Rondo is a first class idiot. He is a WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY better shooter then rondo. And he gets to the hole way better then rondo. I like my man rondo don’t get me wrong but monta is a better overall player. He got range, amazing speed, and he’s just a incredibly gifted scorer…HAVE YOU SEEN HIS CIRCUS SHOT ON YOUTUBE OR SPORTS CENTER? THIS GUY IS THE MAN!

INJURIES IS KEEPING THIS MAN FROM BEING A SUPERSTAR. HE HASN’T COME CLOSE TO PLAYING AN ENTIRE SEASON SINCE HIS SECOND YEAR.

IF ANYTHING, I’D LIKE TO SEE MONTA PLAY FOR A TEAM LIKE THE HORNETS. THEY CAN HAVE HIM SHOOTING GUARD WHILE PAUL IS POINT OF COURSE. THOSE TWO TOGETHER WOULD BE A F**KING HEADACHE FOR ANY TEAM.

If Boston can somehow pull off this trade, you can crown Danny Ainge as GM of the year again. The Celtics are over the salary cap and Ray Allen $19 million comes off the books at the end of the year. But, even with Ray becoming a free agent at years end, Boston will still be over the cap, and it would limit their chances on trying to sign players. Rasheed Wallace signed a 2 year mid-level contract, so that’s out. But if they can pull a trade for Ray and get someone like Monta Ellis, not only would that make them younger, but you have your 2 guard of your future for years to come. Teams that came rebuild while still contending are far and few between. Usually teams that are contending for a title are more focused on the now rather than the later. You have fewer options in basketball than football or baseball. The Celtics are old, and the window of opportunity is closing fast. Now Monta Ellis being a better fit with this team rather than Ray is another question. Ellis is more of a scorer and his game tharves off transaction and taking the ball to the basket. Unlike Ray, he’s a pure shooter and he spreads the court for Paul, Kevin, and Rondo.

As for Golden State, you do get older fast, but you don’t have to pay the remainder of Ellis’s contract. And you get a player like Curry, that can learn from probably the best shooter in the history of the NBA. At least the prettiest. Also, putting Ray in Don Nelson’s run and gun offense, why Ray couldn’t give you 25-30 points every night is beyond me. Warriors don’t lose a step in this deal. If anything, they gain more cap space. At the end, I really see this trade as a win/win for both teams……
