Monta Ellis/Ray Allen Swap?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

It’s Trade Talk season, so you should expect these types of rumors for the next couple of weeks. My apologies in advance.

The latest out of Beantown is that the Golden State Warriors want to trade Monta Ellis, and are looking at Ray Allen (and his expiring deal) as a possible option. For now, however, it sounds like a far-fetched dream on both sides of the equation.

From CSN New England:

While the Celtics have maintained repeatedly that they have no intentions of moving any of their core guys between now and the Feb. 18 trading deadline — and I believe ‘em on this one — multiple league sources confirmed today that the Golden State Warriors are giving some thought to putting together a trade package that would involve Monta Ellis going to Boston in exchange for Allen.

The Warriors see rookie Stephen Curry as the face of the franchise moving forward. One league source said the Warriors believe that Curry won’t develop at the rate they would like as long as Ellis is around.

Danny Ainge, Boston’s president of basketball operations, has talked to a number of teams about a number of players recently. But it doesn’t appear that this is a deal he has given any serious thought to considering. Ainge has said repeatedly that he wants to see how the Celtics, as they are currently constructed, play together when relatively healthy. Boston has yet to play a game this season with an entirely healthy roster.

For what it’s worth, Ray Allen says he’d love to stay in Boston. And members of the media in the Bay Area aren’t buying the trade talk at all.

Still, it’s a story worth keeping an eye on. Just don’t lose any sleep over it.

So you mean to tell me that Stephen Curry has a chance to be better than Monta? Um…

  • RIGGS Posted: Jan.26 at 9:21 am
hahaha yeah ok, like the celtics are that stupid.

  • Fat Lever Posted: Jan.26 at 9:24 am
For my thoughts on the Celts, as of now, please refer to the title of track one of Mobb Deep’s classic LP The Infamous.

  • MooButter Posted: Jan.26 at 9:28 am
Cosign T-Money. It would be a big mistake to let Ellis go to replace him with Curry. If he’s unhappy, that’s another story.

  • LCD screen cleaner Posted: Jan.26 at 9:35 am
he might be starting out with the less plausible trades so that the next ones that break wont sound so farfetched

  • Jas Posted: Jan.26 at 9:47 am
Given that Allen is such a good fit in Boston, I don’t think the Celtics would pull the trigger on this one. Sure, Ellis would make them younger and more athletic, but he’s not a “half-court player,” and lacks experience. It would be interesting to watch Rondo and Ellis play together, though.

  • Darksaber Posted: Jan.26 at 10:04 am
If this happens, then the C’s (ahem, Ainge) are disloyal jackasses.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.26 at 10:15 am
I’m not worried that this would happen, Ray means too much to us. (Leadership, experience, his poise, his FT shooting, he does play defense and he is still athletic enough to get it done in the lane and let’s not forget that sweet J and killer instinct. Hhhmmmm thay’d have to give up way more than Ellis.

  • oliver Posted: Jan.26 at 10:35 am
i’ll be happy if this happens,
honestly jesus is declining to fast,

  • tavoris Posted: Jan.26 at 10:53 am
@Oliver-really? He looks to me like he has 4-5 effective seasons left in him-EASY.

  • Fat Lever Posted: Jan.26 at 11:04 am
    I dont know about 4 or 5, but I’d say about 2-3.

  • Th3_R3al_Chris Posted: Jan.26 at 11:22 am
Ray Allen gets to the rack better than anybody else on the Celtics, including Rajon Rondo. They should extend him. Even if he becomes a 6th man in a year or two, at least they’ll show loyalty to one of the core guys who brought them back to prominence.

  • Th3_R3al_Chris Posted: Jan.26 at 11:23 am
Besides, if anybody wants to point out declining numbers, take into account that all of the big three have taken a dip in numbers so that Kendrick Perkins can average 12 a game (which is a huge improvement) and Rondo can score 14 (another improvement). Sheed is also dropping double digits off of the bench. This reminds me of the 00′s Pistons.

  • grillzboy224 Posted: Jan.26 at 11:36 am
Why in all world, is nobody inquiring for the mavs’ huge expiring contracts, in j-ho and damp?? They need a guard like monta who can score in an instant, so let’s make it happen

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.26 at 11:49 am
I love it when “fans” talk about things w/out validity. Saying that Ray has declined is kind of dumb. As a player ages he does slow a bit but the knowledge grows, Ray hasn’t slowed too much and he is wiser. He gets to the hole on a regular basis, defends well, still sticks the j and hits FT’s so to say he is “declining too fast” is showing a lack of BBall IQ plain and simple. i bet The Cavs, Lakers, Magic and any other title hopeful would take Ray in a heartbeat. Numbers tend to drop when you buy into the team 1st concept to win it all.

  • RIGGS Posted: Jan.26 at 11:52 am
@Chris: ehh i dunno if he gets there better than rondo now, before i would never disagree with that, but now after rondo has matured into a better player…

  • the_baller20 Posted: Jan.26 at 12:00 pm
hahaha that must be a joke, my main man ray ray isn’t going anywhere.

  • Seth Posted: Jan.26 at 12:17 pm
I wouldn’t mind Boston trading for Ellis, even though he shoots WAY too much and turns it over too. He’s only 24 though, and how old is Ray? He won’t be as serviceable in a few years, so it wouldn’t be a bad move for Boston.

  • Da Hood Posted: Jan.26 at 12:44 pm
    2nd fat lever’s comment.

  • M Cho Posted: Jan.26 at 12:50 pm
Seeing Ray Allen in a Celtics uniform has been one of my favourite sights in the last 2 1/2 years. Whatever “decline” in stats he’s had is offset by the intangibles he’s brought.

  • DP Posted: Jan.26 at 12:52 pm
Na homie this is absurd. Monta is nothing more than rondo he just shoots a hell of alot more and he doesn’t distribute as well. pointless really but it’s just a “rumor”

  • jfrye Posted: Jan.26 at 12:53 pm
wow this trade would never go down!

  • ab_40 Posted: Jan.26 at 1:08 pm
Boston has yet to play a game this season with an entirely healthy roster. WOW

  • rob Posted: Jan.26 at 1:10 pm
If Boston trade Ray Allen I’ll hate them even more. That is absurd.

  • tavoris Posted: Jan.26 at 1:21 pm
@Fat Lever- you don’t think Ray Allen-who keeps himself in excellent shape-can be effective shooting jumpers at 39? If he was a player who depended on athleticism, I’d agree with you. Allen is a skill player first & foremost tho.

  • Kent Kanada Posted: Jan.26 at 1:22 pm
I dont think this deal will happen, but it definitely makes sense. I think that the Warriors are right when they believe that Monta will only slow the development of Curry. Bringing in Allen who is a serial killing shooter will only help the promising Curry.

  • Jon Riggs Posted: Jan.26 at 1:53 pm
as a celtics fan, i wouldnt mind seeing this trade happen…just my opinion

  • The Seed Posted: Jan.26 at 1:58 pm
This is a good trade for the Celtics. Curry development is being hindered by a volume shooter, I need numbers player. Get rid of him for the contract. Celtics need to do it, to bring some excitement back to their team.

  • ClydeSays Posted: Jan.26 at 2:09 pm
Depends on what kind of extension Ray wants. 20 mil for 2 years? I think Ainge would do that. 15 or 20 per year? No. If Ray wants to cash in on this contract, I don’t doubt Ainge is considering this trade. That said, I’d like Ray to close out his career as a C. Ellis can be ridiculously good, but that would give Boston a tiny backcourt with similar slashing styles. Still, might be fun to watch…

  • RIGGS Posted: Jan.26 at 2:12 pm
they dont need a volume shooter, it would be marbury 2.0 (not comparing monta to stephon but come on)

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.26 at 3:04 pm
Ray Allen must be p!ssed if this happens. The Celtics trying to do him dirty with this one.

  • iheartcoffee Posted: Jan.26 at 3:21 pm
Monte Ellis and Rajon Rondo are pretty much the same player, Ellis just shoots a lot more. Neither player can hit a jump shot, come playoff time the Celtics would definitley miss Allens ability to spread the floor. Why would you want 2 players in your starting back court who couldn’t hit an open jumper to save their lives? This trade doesn’t make sense.

  • Yesse Posted: Jan.26 at 3:35 pm
I think Ray should remain a Celtic.Even though the trade might just help the Celtics, but that would be cruel.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers Posted: Jan.26 at 5:14 pm
I love Ray Ray´s game and demeanor as much as the next guy, and Monta is as spectacular and ineficient as anyone (takes like 127 shots a game),allways needs as many shots as the points is getting…BUT THIS WOULD BE VERY LOOPSIDED FOR BOSTON, GTFOH, Jesus isnt a 25 year old dude anymore!

  • JE Posted: Jan.26 at 5:16 pm
This would be dumber than the Pistons trading Chauncey Billups.

  • dma Posted: Jan.26 at 5:25 pm
nothing is dumber than pistons trading billups. they did it for an expiring and possible ticket sales. they got nothing out of it. at least with ellis, the celtics would get someone with some game for years to come. not saying they should do it because they shouldn’t. no brainer for GS though.

  • Vince5 Posted: Jan.26 at 5:28 pm
    TRADE HIM FOR SHAQ!

  • dbri Posted: Jan.26 at 6:42 pm
monta is better and younger, Ray fits this team much better. if they’re going for another banner, you do it with Ray.

  • Ged23ai Posted: Jan.26 at 7:30 pm
Monta ellis is a all star caliber player he should stay
at golden state along Stephen curry an idea would
to bring in the services of leon powe. Hopefully they will
they’ll get a high lottery pick

  • letsmotor Posted: Jan.26 at 7:48 pm
as a celtics fan, i pray to god this doesn’t happen, and i’m sure it won’t. monta’s promising, but there’s no reason to trade one of the best shooters ever, a guy who can spread the floor and still take it to the hole and fits in very well with the celtics (i could go on) for monta. he can score, but like rondo–sorry, rondo, i love you–he’s developing as a jump shooter, but he’s still a self-checker. besides, would he be happy in boston, where he wouldn’t be able to take anywhere near the amount of shots he takes now.

  • davidR Posted: Jan.26 at 8:23 pm
monta and rondo are NOT similar players. not even close.

  • davidR Posted: Jan.26 at 8:31 pm
monta’s midrange is extremely potent. if you think his jumper is still developing, then i dunno what to tell you. when the warriors still had baron, jackson, harrington, biedrins, and pietrus, monta was shooting 53% from the field off drives and jumpers. if he were to go to boston, you’d be surprised how efficient his offensive game would be, especially considering the offensive firepower the celtics already have

  • davidR Posted: Jan.26 at 8:37 pm
anyway, this wouldnt make sense for the warriors. actually, from a warrior standpoint, it does make sense. we always give away our best talent either for nothing, or for something that doesn’t fit the team

  • Earl Monroe Posted: Jan.26 at 8:42 pm
Ellis cannot hit a jumper? the kid has probably one of the best mid range jumpers in the NBA, as far as not having a half court game, he is basically unstoppable on half court drives because of his jumper, and the reason he averages in the high twenties this year is because he has developed a
3 pt shot. And yes if the Warriors dump Ellis, its because Curry can actually lead a team, he makes the easy pass, plays defense and shares the ball. The main problem with Ellis is that he is not a willing passer most of the time, although he could be. With Ellis on the wing ad Garnett on the post, Ellis is basically unstoppable, more so than Allen. Its a contract dump for the Warriors, Allen does not resign with Golden State, creates cap room for the Warriors to pick up a power forward or a big guard. May be a good move for both teams.

  • markean Posted: Jan.26 at 8:48 pm
if the warriors go trade monta ellis up, do you think there will be conflict between him and rondo? I mean both of them wants to penetrate, but then, rondo’s a more willing passer than monta.

  • what Posted: Jan.26 at 10:43 pm
Monta is a great player, but he has been a ball hog his entire career due to the situation more than anything. I’d be surprised if he can integrate himself as the 2nd or 3rd option on the Celtics within half a season, not to mention they will if anything get worse defensively with him. I don’t see this improving the Celtics.

  • dankNuggs Posted: Jan.26 at 10:57 pm
Monta Ellis brings so much more to the table than Stephen Curry, and Ellis would ruin Boston’s chemistry by taking a lot of the ball handling from Rondo. This would be a mistake for both teams

  • GametimeWeezy Posted: Jan.26 at 11:17 pm
If Ray Allen wasn’t my dude…i’d be interested in seeing Monta wearing green. Puting him next to Rondo is intriguing to say the least. But…Ray Allen is my DUUUUDE! I’d hate to see him leave…n so would P-Double n Da God i’m sure..

  • niQ Posted: Jan.27 at 12:51 am
    Won’t happen.

  • Shifty Posted: Jan.27 at 2:37 am
No way ray ray is staying

  • davidR Posted: Jan.27 at 4:34 am
what, monta can easily make himself the 2nd or 3rd option. he’s done it before.

  • grimmjow Posted: Jan.27 at 6:44 am
Trade ME8 for hinrich @ CHI. DRose and ME8 for the Bulls backcourt. then trade Pargo, Jerome James and Brad Miller for Amare.

  • Hornet Fan! Posted: Jan.27 at 12:49 pm
Whoever compared Monta to Rondo is a first class idiot. He is a WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY better shooter then rondo. And he gets to the hole way better then rondo. I like my man rondo don’t get me wrong but monta is a better overall player. He got range, amazing speed, and he’s just a incredibly gifted scorer…HAVE YOU SEEN HIS CIRCUS SHOT ON YOUTUBE OR SPORTS CENTER? THIS GUY IS THE MAN! INJURIES IS KEEPING THIS MAN FROM BEING A SUPERSTAR. HE HASN’T COME CLOSE TO PLAYING AN ENTIRE SEASON SINCE HIS SECOND YEAR. IF ANYTHING, I’D LIKE TO SEE MONTA PLAY FOR A TEAM LIKE THE HORNETS. THEY CAN HAVE HIM SHOOTING GUARD WHILE PAUL IS POINT OF COURSE. THOSE TWO TOGETHER WOULD BE A F**KING HEADACHE FOR ANY TEAM.

  • [...] Ray’s name keeps getting batted around in trade chatter, something that his GM finds quite amusing: “For what it’s worth, Danny Ainge seemed genuinely perplexed yesterday at further reports the Celtics [team stats] are trying to trade Ray Allen. The general manager laughed at a couple of the rumors and was trying to understand how some that have been knocked down from both sides continue to get play. Ainge repeatedly has put off questions about the coming offseason and how much change there could be in the C’s roster, but he was pointed with regard to the current campaign. ‘Let me just put it this way: We’re doing everything we can to win a championship now,’ Ainge said. “We’re not going to do anything that might hurt our chances of winning. There’s no question we need to play better, but we’re not going to panic.”’ [...]

  • Farman Posted: Feb.16 at 3:17 am
If Boston can somehow pull off this trade, you can crown Danny Ainge as GM of the year again. The Celtics are over the salary cap and Ray Allen $19 million comes off the books at the end of the year. But, even with Ray becoming a free agent at years end, Boston will still be over the cap, and it would limit their chances on trying to sign players. Rasheed Wallace signed a 2 year mid-level contract, so that’s out. But if they can pull a trade for Ray and get someone like Monta Ellis, not only would that make them younger, but you have your 2 guard of your future for years to come. Teams that came rebuild while still contending are far and few between. Usually teams that are contending for a title are more focused on the now rather than the later. You have fewer options in basketball than football or baseball. The Celtics are old, and the window of opportunity is closing fast. Now Monta Ellis being a better fit with this team rather than Ray is another question. Ellis is more of a scorer and his game tharves off transaction and taking the ball to the basket. Unlike Ray, he’s a pure shooter and he spreads the court for Paul, Kevin, and Rondo. As for Golden State, you do get older fast, but you don’t have to pay the remainder of Ellis’s contract. And you get a player like Curry, that can learn from probably the best shooter in the history of the NBA. At least the prettiest. Also, putting Ray in Don Nelson’s run and gun offense, why Ray couldn’t give you 25-30 points every night is beyond me. Warriors don’t lose a step in this deal. If anything, they gain more cap space. At the end, I really see this trade as a win/win for both teams……
