Nets Looking to Deal Devin Harris?

Somewhere, Mark Cuban is cackling maniacally: “And rest assured, the Nets are disappointed enough to listen to offers for Harris — they just don’t expect to get anything done with any of their six core guys before the Feb. 18th deadline. But they’re not exactly considering him (sportswriter cliché alert) an untouchable anymore. Why should he be tenured, anyway? His jumper’s broken. His defense, by and large, is still poor. He’s injury prone. And he’s still young and talented enough to bring back a very good return, given his contract (at least if you pair it with one of the expiring deals). But even if the Nets think they could do better, we find it very hard to drop all the blame of this 3-34 nightmare on this kid’s head, for a number of reasons.”

yet the team with the most ping pong balls doesnt usually get the #1 pick.

  • nel-o

    what are the nets thinking?

  • tavoris

Jer Boi-u right, but that hasn’t stopped teams from tanking every season

    Portland? Golden State?

And this is why Bill Simmons is a writer and qualified ppl are running NBA teams. Not that he is going to own up to having vastly overrated Devin Harris anytime soon.

I’m willing to bet the Miami Heat get in on this.

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

He’s not as good as his numbers suggested he was but I knew that. He’s a speedy 16 point 6 assists guy no more no less.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

The real problem at hand for Jersey is that Harris needs a better supporting cast. He and Lopez are a good pair to build around.

    John WALLLLL!!!
What if we’re overhyping john wall?

  • LA Huey

Umm…I’d wait to ’til I at least win the 1st pick before dealing him. And outside of officially forfeiting games, how would these Nets exactly tank it?

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    TRADE HIM FOR SHAQ!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I hear the Wolves still need more PG’s…

wasn’t he an all-star last year?
then again, jamaal magloire was once an all-star. jamaal magloire! btw, everyone should go check out his profile page on nba.com. totally hilarious.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Nets have a promising young core but they don’t realize it, which is just sad.
    1. Devin Harris
    2. Courtney Lee
    3. Chris Douglas-Roberts
    4. Yi Jian Lian
    5. Brook Lopez
Lopez and Yi are developing into (eventually) All-Star caliber big men. Lopez is already pretty much at that level. I understand Devin Harris isn’t the best defender in the world but Courtney Lee is decent. What the Nets need now is a bench, a few solid to great draft picks (maybe JOHN WALL?!?!?!) and they’re set for next year.
Its funny that Harris is loved by all the “fans,” but when the Nets start losing, as they always have, Harris is now overrated? Right.

  • tavoris

@Teddy-Devin Harris is actually a pretty good on-ball defender when he doesn’t have to exert so much energy on offense. When he was in college-and at Dallas-that was his most important skill. He regressed in NJ because they expect him to create everything on every posession.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan2.0

@albie: maybe magloire isnt the greatest centre to be an all star… but don’t forget, he was the best player on the east that year and if they won the game, he would have had a ASG MVP under his belt

  • http://www.another48minutes.com Gerard Himself

Teddy: they do realize that they have a great young core, that’s why you won’t see them trading guys like CDR or Lopez.

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

I’ve never ever liked Harris. For the record.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

They are giving up on Harris too early. He and Brook Lopez can be a poor man’s Parker and Duncan in the East.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m not sure why everyone is down on Harris? Outside of Rondo and maybe Derrick Rose, Devin is arguably the most talented PG in the East.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Devin Harris & Yi for Bosh & Calderon

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Trading him for expiring cap space and landing the #1 pick = Wall, CDR, Lee, Yi, Lopez…and Bron.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

LeBron is not gonna sign in NJ unless they get more then that

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I dont’ know what Bron would do, but it seems crazy that he would sign with the Nets if that was their squad. He would be at least three to four years away from a ring at that point.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

For NJ to get LeBron they will need to do the trade I said above Myles

  • Double J

You know I really really like the roster of Wall, Lee, CDR, Yi, and Lopez.

  • tavoris

it would be crazy if Lebron threw everyone off this summer and only agreed to a 1 year deal.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

nobody offering LeBron a 1 year deal

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Getting rid of Harris gives them the maneuverability to sign another FA like Boozer though. If one of them is willing to take less money that is. Then its Wall, CDR, Bron, Boozer and Lopez. Which would easily be the best front court in the league.

  • tavoris

@nbk-are you on a mission to discredit every comment? If he demands it, he’ll get it. He’s freaking Lebron James. However, that is pointless since I raised a hypothetical.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Myles what your saying is they are giving up Harris for an Expriring contract. Which is not happening

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I am gonna disagree with everything I disagree with. Are you on a mission to take everything personal?

  • tavoris

@nbk not personal-just pointless 4 u to say “they aren’t gonna do that” repeatedly. If no one is gonna ever do anything you disagree with, then the comment section would just be filled with people typing “First!”. Get a grip

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

no actually it would be a punch of people saying logical ideas

  • vmcb

Harris needs another threat on the wing to succeed. The main difference, besides a coaching change, between this year’s Nets team and last year’s is Vince not being there. Lee isn’t a huge scorer, and Williams is still learning the ropes, meaning opposing teams can focus on Harris without much fear of getting burned elsewhere.

  • tavoris

@nbk-I guess u don’t think a writer for THIS site is logical (Myles), cuz u just did that same nit-picking ‘ish to him. And ur presence here is for????

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I think what he said isn’t logical, because THe NETS wont give up their best player for an expiring deal. I didn’t say they shouldn’t do that. I said they wont.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Myles
I can’t think of any of hte current free agent big men who would be willing to take a pay cut to play with Bron.
Amare, Bosh and Boozer are about their dollars first.
That would be the best front court in the league though.
You know Rudy gay is a free agent. Imagine if Rudy Gay and Brown signed on the Nets. That would be nasty with Bron and Gay both capable of playing hybrid 3/4 and Lopez holding it down in the paint.

  • tavoris

@Allenp-I think that David Lee would be a good fit alongside Bron, also

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

David Lee sucks on defense. Don’t be fooled by the hype. But, he is a rebounding and hustling machine. If Lee was with the Nets, then Lopez might have problems with foul trouble. Then again, if the Nets signed Gay and Lebron, he would have the same problem.

  • tavoris

Well, his suckiness at D seems to be more a problem of the Knicks ineptitude than a lack of effort. I just imagine him actually being able to dunk what Varejo can only awkwardly lay up.

  • tavoris

@nbk-any player not names Lebron, Kobe, Wade, Duncan, or Garnett can be had for the right expiring deal. Chauncey Billups > every player on the Nets, and he was had for an expiring deal. I’m not saying they’re gonna do it either-but then again-neither did Myles.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

That is not true. Chauncee Billups was had for the most ICONIC player of the late 90′s he wasn’t traded for Cuttino Mobley.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

You think every team in the league is willing to screw up their future for an expiring contract tavoris. maybe “coaching d-1″ lol is what you should stick too

  • tavoris

nbk-so I guess ur the only person who thinks the Pistons actually WANTED Allen Iverson. hmmm.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

no they didn’t but they did sell a lot of merchandise. got a ton of attention. and saved 20 million dollars in the process. thats a whole different situation – plus joe dumars is the most overrated GM of all time

  • tavoris

Oh, see the Knicks, Nets, Pistons, Clippers, Hornets, Grizzlies, Warriors, Timberwolves, and soon-to-be Wizards. Those are the first names off my mind that are currently (or have recently) practically GIVEN AWAY key players away for little more than cap space.
