Shaq Wants Vince, Kobe, LBJ in Dunk Contest

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Like most people in this world, Shaquille O’Neal wants the NBA’s biggest (and most athletic) stars to take part in the Dunk Contest, an event those stars no longer consider worth their time.

The difference between Shaq and most people is that he has a large platform to voice his opinion. Last night, following the Cavs’ win over the Raptors, O’Neal challenged his teammate LeBron James and also threw down the gauntlet for Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter.

From the Plain Dealer:

“As his manager, I will only allow LeBron to do the dunk contest if Vince Carter comes back out, if Kobe [Bryant] comes back out and if another big name comes back out,” O’Neal said. “And if we can get a big prize and half of the money go to the people of Haiti and the other half to the winner.”

“The guys that are in it, no disrespect to them, but they wouldn’t really be any competition for LeBron,” O’Neal said. On Tuesday, James said he enjoys watching All-Star Saturday night but that he doesn’t feel like taking part. He said he has no regrets for going back on his statement from a year ago. “I’m not a regretful guy,” James said. “I don’t know, I’m just not high on [the contest].”

Naturally, none of this will happen.

Forget the simple fact that both Vince and Kobe are injured — and, let’s be honest, too old to be taking part in any kind of dunking exhibition — but they’ve both already put in their time, and each won a Dunk Contest. And James, well, he’s apparently too cool for school to take part.

The Dunk Contest is dead, and his challenges will do nothing to change that. Shaq should just write a big check for the suffering people of Haiti, and call it a day.

I’m sure he’s already done that (made a big donation).

Trying to put lipstick on a pig.

  • boy sanchez

That’s a wonderful idea, but still a dream… Too bad this is never going to happen.

  • Orlando Green

We all want that Shaqtus…omg will I get sued..lol.

  • Juice

idk all im sayin about shannon brown is dude can fly

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com That’sWhatSheSaid

That would be nice if both Kobe and Vince were at least 4 yrs younger. You can definately see that both Kobe and Vince no longer have the hops they used to have. Shaq is calling out the wrong group of guys.

  • Dre JayAre

Vince and Kobe only take part in selective flight these days. They can’t get up like they used to. 14 years in the L will do that you know.

New contest: Stern vs. Shaq one-on-one. Might be more entertaining than Eric Gordon trying to impress.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dominicderose dlouis

Shaq’s so old he is senile.

  • Hussman25

Nice jester, but will never happen! Oh and Lebron is still a biznitch! BOOOOOOO THIS MAN!

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

I think the league should probably come up with some other creative ways to make All Star Saturday something new and fresh. Then in the next 5 years or so, bring back the dunk contest and call it “Old School”. I think Vince’s win was the last time I really enjoyed the dunk contest as a whole. Dwight Howard’s Superman skit was funny, but that contest as a whole was pretty lame to me. I just think it’s time to put that contest to rest for a while and let everyone–fans and players–miss it a little bit.

  • ball4life

I dont know why Lebron thinks he’s too cool to compete in it. M.J competed and won it multiple times

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I think Vince Carter might shatter when he hits the ground after his first dunk attempt….Kobe and Vince are too old to be doin that contest. Bron is just scared to lose because he’s just a game dunker.

  • ball4life

Why does Lebron thimk he’s too good for the contest? M.J competed in it and won it multiple times

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

We all want this to happen. Too bad it won’t. As for the 4th dunker they should bring back J.Rich.

  • TheMagician10

I agree with ball4life, if you can win it and join an elite class like MJ, Kobe, and other respected players and dunkers and all time greats, your sponsored by Nike….JUST DO IT. At least win it once…but I think he might be scared of losing coming in as such a huge favorite.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mansonovic Mansonovic

LeBron literally cannot win. He enters the dunk contest, he’s got an ego that won’t let him not have something that MJ and Kobe have got. He doesn’t enter the dunk contest, he’s too scared to damage his reputation. Isn’t it possible, just slightly, that maybe this is LeBron recognising a limitation? Maybe he knows he’s not a creative dunker, so why take the place of someone who is?

  • Fat Lever

The more pressing question is what does Nate Robinson have on Stern that Stern will allow him to participate in this years contest? If it was a stamina contest to see how many consecutive times you can attempt a dunk without tiring out, Nate would have the all time title. Not to mention the contest is more fixed than Heidi Montag’s grill.

  • onions baby onions

f**k the dunk contest! hasn’t been legit since ’00

  • http://slamonline.com d.j.

good idea by shaq i hope it happens… and yes lebron can win it….

  • jumpman3224

Does shaq even watch the nba nowadays?! The guys in the dunk contest this year would def. give LeBron more of a challenge than a couple of 30+ year olds.

  • IlMagoo

Lebron never said he was “too good”…

  • http://www.yahoo.com Logues

this would be better to watch even tho carter and kobe prolly cant do great dunks anymore(well vince prolly can), but it would be fun to see what they got, and all the great players that could dunk great never turned down the contest, so yes lebron is being a p**sy by not competing

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Yeah. Lebron is so funny man. I can’t get over this guys ego!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

BREAKING NEWS:”Shaq wants someone to pay attention to him”

  • Yesse

Well me too and im glad, that atleast one of the Nba history’s best player’s agrees with us fan’s.Shaq already talked about promoting a dunk contest in one slam around 2005-2006.I wish this would really happen.Like an all star game dunk contest in the half or before the game.

  • RedRum

I think one on one games should replace the dunk contest. Give them big bucks, and let it rip! Kobe vs. LJ, Garnett vs. Duncan, Shaq vs. Barcley!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/media/slam-tv/2009/12/video-kobe-beats-bucks-at-the-buzzer/ toine

They should have a one on one contest like deron williams vs chris paul or kobe vs lebron that would be hot!!!!!! Then you can see who truly are the best players but that will never happened. Players act like they are to scared to fail.

  • Statik

Forget all that, Shaq should just pull the non-pros out to showcase their skills and offer cash prizes. He could match the total they give to 1st place and send it to Haiti and then give the winner a certificate saying he helped in the charity event. I’m sure him, some sponsors, and his Shaq vs. friends could hook that up, then he’d give himself a reason to still be relevant somewhere

  • Nashty

If Lebron enters the dunk contest, he will win it. C’mon, he is not exactly going up against MJ, Vince or Dominque in their prime. I know Shannon Brown is nice but didn’t Lebron beat him in a dunk contest back in high school?

  • http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

Shaq also called out MJ, Dominique, and Kenny “Sky” Walker, saying he would not let his client participate unless they entered the contest.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Question of the Day: How can you ‘call’ someone out if you’re not involved in it yourself?

  • Michael

Shaq thinks they should only donate HALF of the money to Haiti? Like NBA Superstars really need another $50,000.

  • http://www.slamonline.com B-zog

How about every player in the NBA donates $5,000 to Hati and that would total up to about $2,000,000

  • TL

Kobe and Vince are not old! EFF THAT. I refuse to believe that. They can still both throw down

  • Shadojoker

Kobe and Vince participated in the contest before..Dwight did it..all the “Great” dunkers did it..wtf Lebron? dude is a punk by not giving the fans what they want..I agree with the above.. BOOOOO THIS MAN for the next month and a half!!

  • vmcb

This contest won’t be so bad. The participants are obviously athletic enough, but its a problem when Gerald Wallace is arguable the biggest name competing.

  • http://JoshDrake Josh D

Just get LeBron,Iggy, and J-Smoove in the dunk contest with Dwight Howard and Kryptonate

It was good enough for Mike. I wonder why some of todays stars feel like the fans dont deserve it. Then again, Iverson and McGrady are allstars…

  • TyMo

The real problem with the Dunk Contest is that all the dunks have already been taken. We’ve seen everything, so no matter who’s in it, nothing will be fresh.

  • http://twitter.com/pdxgaybball dma

someone needs to dunk with three balls. 2 while driving and the third as an alley oop. Somehow.

  • michael scorn

How about this. I will stop voting for McGrady and Iverson year after year to be in the all-star game when LeBron finally enters the dunk contest.

  • Tweaks

there are a lot of great dunks yet to be made..tf you talkin about? Behind the legs free throw line dunk…720degrees…not even the two handed free throw line has been done properly..2feet jump from freethrow line…the step BEHIND the free throw line etc…then there’s off the bounce over a person dunks…some serious 360 alley-oops ..and there’s always room for a simple head-above the rim windmill to kill it…..It’s still the dunker’s style that’s missing nowadays.

  • michael scorn

If LeBron won’t do a dunk contest, he would NEVER do the one-on-one contest.

  • http://none The Philosopher

Get five guys and play twenty – one.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

As I’ve said before and I’ll say it again: Unless I see Wade, J-Smooth, Iggy, or some other big names doing this, then I say Lebron stays out. Why beat up on nobodies? Or worse, lose to nobodies?

  • http://www.myspace.com/freedmusic fredd

goddamn, this one on one contest would be such a great idea

  • Wendallt

    Lame James

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

lebron is a lil baby. cmon shaq, vince is like 33 with gimpy shoulder, kobe is 31 gimpy finger and back. j smoove has been there, won that, iggy got cheated. jr giddens destroyed lebron in the mcds contest, but got hurt in the final round so bron won by default, he did the same dunk 3 times. he has no tricks.

  • http://digitalthread.com AlbertBarr

So, because Bron wasnt creative in his highschool dunking contest he wouldnt be successful in the NBA ALLSTAR version? I think he has had some time to get creative…maybe he just isnt that interested.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

This Lebron guy is starting to make Kobe a lot more likeable

  • Bushfiya

Wince, uh ah i mean Vince
    J Rich

who else should be on the fantasy list of people we would love to see in the Dunk Comp??!?

  • http://myspace.com/weezyleezy337 GametimeWeezy

Its not that he thinks he’s to cool…is it? He just doesnt want to lose. Thats the only reason people dont step up to challenges. Or maybe just that he has nothing to prove. IDK. Weeaak! Shaq really do like to start some ish tho haha!

  • Jose

Get the class of 03′.LBJ,FLASH,MELO and…????crap i need another name .i wanna say bosh but he wuldnt go right in the contest

  • rob

LBJ should dunk against young players who are in their prime. Like… yes, Shannon Brown. But what happened? Shannon was 10 times more creative in the mcdonalds dunk contest. He was the true winner. Lecunt played it safe as usual, same dunks over and over. Zero creativity. That’s why he didn’t want to participate. Of course James would defeat Kobe and VC easily because they are past their prime athletically. VC from 2000 would murder Lejerk. Shaq loves Lebrons nuts big time.

F*ck Lebron seriously, and F*ck Shaq too.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariqُُ

Shaq should have added Steve Francis to that list. And Cedric Ceballos.

  • Joe King

demar derozan not be able to compete with lebron?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!
Dude will win dunk contest 3 years running !!!!

  • Vikturus

There was actually a vid up here on SLAM in the summer from some tar heels reunion where Vince throw down a alley-oop windmill style (filmed summer 09) so he can still get up… But he has no reason to return to the dunk contest, just saying he can still fly.

  • Filip SRB

LBJ is afraid, that someone gonna beat him!!!

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS

SHAQ is STUPID. Always was, always will(those things don’t change).

  • JoeMaMa

Shaq wants, Shaq wants, Shaq wants….you better be careful, because he also likely wants your wife/girlfriend, and apparently it leads to a downward spiral and a gun charge. So….just give Shaq what he wants, and let us live in peace.

  • http://www.Slamonline.com jfrye

i dont know about the dunk contest being dead… the dunkers this year will will be extremely athletic and a great show to watch!

  • http://www.fantasticfansite.com Fontaine

Kobe and Vince cant jump anymore. LBJ would get sick over them dudes. Would be entertaining though.
