Trade Talk: Bynum for Bosh

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

With the trade deadline on the horizon, ’tis indeed the season for wild rumors. And this one is a doozy.

Everyone in Toronto (and around the League) seems resigned to the idea that Chris Bosh will be wearing a different uniform next season, so it’s not unusual to see his name being tossed around in these conversations. The surprise is seeing Andrew Bynum — who’s having his best season yet as a pro — in the same chatter.

According to the NY Post, however, the Los Angeles Lakers wouldn’t mind swapping bigs with Toronto:

A Lakers source told me the team had its sights set high, as usual, and planned to target the possible acquisition of Chris Bosh when it got closer to the 3 p.m. Feb. 18 trade deadline, and the Raptors might be more likely to move their Olympian/All-Star while still entitled to compensation. It commonly is believed Bosh almost certain is to flee Toronto after this season, when he has the right to opt out of the final year ($17.1 million) of his contract.

My source believes the Lakers will offer Andrew Bynum for Bosh (if they haven’t done so already) well before the deadline expires. In itself, the one-for-one swap is impossible to make. Bynum’s “base year” essentially allows L.A. to take back but half of his salary this year ($12.5M). Of course, that restriction is lifted when next year’s salary ($13.7M) activates come July 1, at which time a sign-and-trade transaction would be feasible.

Naturally and immediately, Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo strongly denied such talks when asked about them.

That being said, what are your thoughts on this: Does it make sense for both sides, or is this just the first in a long line of crazy rumors prior to the Feb. 18 deadline?

James the Balla, I hope you’re joking, and if you’re not at least add in Shannon Brown! And J-City, they wrote it as Killer Bs. And when I saw that on TV it took me a good 10 seconds to realize they didn’t say BS. LOL

  • http://www.nba.com East ATL

Since the raptors do not have a chance at winning the East, the raptors should start rebuilding from now. If they trade Bosh for Bynum, the raptors will receive the next coming of Shaq. Currently, Bynum is hands down the best center in the league. He has a greater offensive threat than Dwight Howard will ever have, and Bynum has not even reached the peak of his potential. With a young core of Demar Derozen, Andrew Bynum, and Andre Barnani, have a chance a forming a dynasty within the next few years. The sagacity of the Raptors to pick up Bynum gives them a chance to compete for NBA championship in six years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Naw… I am just playing lol. My hopes are up we get Bosh!!!!!
imagine Kobe with 7-8-9 championships. The haters heads will explode lol!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

lol @ EASt – In SIX YEARS??? lol

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

He must have said 6 years in relation to the time Kobe is starting to fall off. lol

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Well Kobe has played quite poorly the last 4-5 games.. so I am pretty sure everyone “knows” he is falling off now!!

  • kev

this would be a great move for LA Bynum is always injured and has questionable work ethic. I would hate for this to happen because we would have a new laker dynasty on our hands.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Andrew Bynum is hands down the best center in the league LMAO, now thats funny

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

this is just lakers fans wishing. and its very poor “reporting”. slam has been disappointing me lately, just parroting whatever the viper has to say. a source tells me the lakers will trade vujabiotch and former for deron williams. a source tells me they will also trade bynum for dwight.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Tarzan you realize Bynum for Bosh makes sense for both teams right? Or are you in your own little world

  • L

After reading all of these comments, I’ve come to the conclusion that the majority of you do not watch NBA basketball.

Bynum for Bosh does not work in any sense. The Raptors would be giving up 8.6 ppg, as well as 2.9 rpg. Bynum is not going to average 24 and 11, as Bosh is doing now. This is not to mention that the salaries don’t match up.

If that’s not enough proof, look at who wrote the article and where it was published. Peter Vecsey has the credibility of Bernie Madoff.

And buddy who says Bosh’s cousin is his manager… She already bought all the merch she needs last year, and Bosh is actually doing MORE charity work this year. I work with the Boys and Girls Club of Canada, and he’s increased the amount of work he does for us.

    Keep trying guys.

  • Mr. Rashad

Bynum in Toronto would appear to be a good long term investment. Alongside some of the young talent they have in T-Dot, Bynum would continue to bloom. Yet, I don’t think it would generate more parity to add Bosh to the Lakers roster. Sounds like, an NBA LIVE lineup with all the players on 99. Send Bosh to New York or Houston, but not the Lakers. The NBA is already lacking balance as it stands.

  • tavoris

is Bynum even the best center in LA? Doesn’t Gasol play Center a lot? And what about Chris Kaman?

  • floe

As much as I am a big fan of Bynum and can’t stand Bosh the Lakeshow would have to add another significant piece to make that trade happen. Someone like a Ron Artest, Trevor Ariza or a Lamar Odom which I doubt would happen.

Also i don’t see the combo of Paul and Bosh working too well together. They’re playing styles essentially consist of the same dynamics.. same strenghs, same weaknesses.

If I had to guess I’m pretty sure Bosh is re-signing with Toronto next year unless something significant happens from now till then.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

who plays the 5 bn bosh and odom when pau is resting or in foul trouble??

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If toronto is not offered a better piece then Bynum by the trade deadline this trade WILL happen. There is no way toronto is going to let Bosh go for free in the offseason. And a sign and trade does not look likely considering the teams rumored to be interested in signing bosh. Unless Toronto wants to roll the dice on a David Lee and Nate Rob for Bosh sign n trade. But thats real real risky

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Z I think the appropriate question is, how do 5′s guard the Lakers if this trade goes down.

  • http://Egotastic.com Michael

This Would be horrible for the Lakers. They are having enough trouble getting enough shots for everyone as is.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Why do people think Bosh is selfish? And Pau will now get the touches he needs down low, considering the Lane will be spread out. I don’t see how this will help in the Finals if the Lakers meet up with Boston, or Orlando

  • L

NBK… Please tell us how it makes sense for both teams. Please, I implore you.

  • tavoris

@Michael-they do? Kobe never has a problem getting his…

  • tavoris

I could see Bym flat-out REFUSING to play for the Raptors.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Not if he wants to get paid

  • tavoris

@nbk-for the sake of “what ifs”: Kobe, Artest, Bosh, Pau, Odom+any other spare parts the Lakers decide to throw out there=a team that nobody in the NBA could come close to beating. Heck, that lineup would give All-Star teams fits.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I know that. If this trade happens the league pretty much won’t have any mystery to it at all. I just think Bynum works better then Bosh when talking about the Lakers and Magic due to their rebounding ability. Regardless if this trade happens or not the Lakers are IMO 3-1 favorites for the title

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Celtics****

  • goh

dude if bynum get traded to raps he’s not gonna fit into the system thus becoming a bad player.
the lakers made that dude and just like hedo i bet u bynum gonna start complaining bout an unhappy role.

  • derrick

don’t know if this was mentioned but if i were the lakers i would trade gasol for bosh straight up. bosh is younger and has a better all around game. having bosh and gasol in the frontcourt would be nice but who would be the tough guy? if they get bosh they winning the ship this year. and this is coming from a laker hater.

  • tavoris

@Derrick-Gasol would NEVER agree to leave LA. If they forced his hand, he’d refuse to play (or get “injured” like he did in Memphis)

  • nastynas

    @z
    what about DJ BENGAAAAAAAAAA

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

some ppl are more condident than i am in having a rotation of three finesse bigs. not a fan of bynum by all means but he does give a different look inside to LA. this trade, to me, would be like phx trying to add cp3. yeah, he’s crazy nice but is he whatchu need?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Come on Z that is not a good comparison

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Keep Bynum, don’t need Bosh, we need another slasher to come in the Game for Kobe that can get buckets. The starting five is fine, we need good role and bench players to come in and play. Lakers need second unit help, not first unit help, also Bynum is defense in the middle, we need him to clog the lane. Lakers are fine, trade for a second tier player, like Micheal Redd and others. Don’t do this trade, LAKERS!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

The Seed. You already have that “slasher,” his name is Shannon Brown!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

THe Seed you want the lakers trading for an injured over paid second tier player, instead of a top 10 in the league? Are you retarded?

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

“Currently, Bynum is hands down the best center in the league.” LOL! Hands down this best comment in this thread.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

LOL Bynum is NOT the best center in the league he will be someday though because Dwight doesn’t have a post move and Bynum is improving in every part of his game but I HOPE THIS HAPPENS. Bosh is going to leave why not send him to my Lakers so we can 8 peat.

  • Hoodsnake

Bosh wants a max deal in July so how does this make sense on LA’s books?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@ L – Well for the Lakers it should be obvious. – Bosh clears space for Gasol AND Kobe to get more touches on the block. He is a defensive pest on the Pick & Roll – even more effective then Lamar Odom.
And for Toronto – They receive a young talented big man, who has a contract that will keep him in town for a couple years. Toronto essentially gets Bynum for Bosh instead of Losing Bosh for nothing this summer (Which WILL happen, unless the sign-n-trade i talked about earlier happens).

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Toronto would also be able to run a hedo-dwight type pick and roll, except they would have Bynum. Their team is literally built just like last years magic if this trade goes through

If LA makes this trade (i believe) they get to keep Bosh’s bird rights, which allows them to sign him above the cap. And the Lakers are not worried about the luxury tax, especially if they get a player that makes them favorites for the next half a decade.

  • stYinUrlane

    like datin alicia keys – u can’t pass that up – CAN’T!!!!1

  • fizzrocket

No. No, no, no. The Lakers need Bynum as an actual low-post player, not like Bosh, who floats around on the high post and takes jumpers. Bosh I don’t think Bosh would enjoy being a 3rd-4th option, either. At least go to Miami where you’ll get an oop or five from D-Wade.

  • Vegas

Bosh for Boozer and Korver from the jazz?

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

Bynum makes Andrea move to the 4 where he belongs. I like nbk’s magic comparison because with Andrew a (much) less athletic Dwight with more post moves and Andrea like a better Rashard Lewis, It makes sense. For the Lakers, Bosh allows Gasol to be the main 7 footer on the block so no fighting for touches . The part I disagree with is the rebounding thing. Gasol gets 11 , Bosh gets 12, Odom gets 10, Ron and Kobe both get 5 I mean the other team might not grab a single board for quarters at a time. Sure their numbers will balance out but still. Actually though if I was the lakers I MIGHT try and get Jefferson or even Better Love from minny for Bynum.

  • http://www.luketynan.blogspot.com litetitan

I’ve gone and replicated a trade straight up on the “espn trade machine”: Bynum for Bosh___DETAILS AS FOLLOWS.
    _
TRADE FAIL: Lakers are over the cap, incoming salaries are greater than 125% plus $100,000 of their out going salaries. Cut $7,867,412 from Lakers incoming trade value to make this successful.
    _
I’ll try a few other trades involving the Lakers and Bosh and see what works…
    _
Obviously though, this trade in this format will not happen.

  • kudos

shiit, i would trade bynum + odom for bosh straight up if i were the lakers. Bynum is all “potential,” but if you look closely he has zero defense. He may have some postmoves but he’s not even in the same league as brook lopez. Adding Bosh to the lakers creates a all-stars-squad that could beat either the East OR West in the all star game.

  • Hoodsnake

Lakers should trade for ZBo who is playing like he is in a contract year…hey wait a minute!
