What’s Next for Gilbert and the Wizards?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Gilbert Arenas was charged with one count of felony gun possession (for carrying an unlicensed weapon), and he reached a plea agreement that could mean he won’t have to do any jail time. He’s reportedly scheduled to plead guilty this afternoon in a D.C. court.

As for Gil’s future in Washington, well, it sure doesn’t sound like there is much of one. Even if the team doesn’t void his contract — a scenario that seems more and more likely — it’s hard to imagine Arenas donning a Wizards uniform ever again.

Here’s the Washington Post reporting on the once blissful union between Gilbert and the Wiz:

A person close to Arenas said Thursday that Arenas believes President Ernie Grunfeld and the Wizards management failed to support him following his locker room confrontation on Dec. 21 with teammate Javaris Crittenton. The two players were feuding over a gambling debt stemming from a card game on a team flight back to Washington from Phoenix two days earlier.

Arenas, the person close to the player said, has told NBA investigators that his flippant behavior following the incident, including the pantomiming of pistols before a game that led to an indefinite suspension from Stern, was because he felt the Wizards organization had turned its back on him.

“If your own franchise, the people you considered family, weren’t there for you when you needed them most, would you want to play for them and be around them anymore?” said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Arenas “was wrong for bringing guns into the locker room, and it’s going to mean pleading guilty to a felony. It’s serious business. But the way this came out and how Ernie and the organization handled the facts makes you wonder if he will ever play for them again.”

It remains to be seen what — if anything — Billy Hunter and the Players’ Union will do for Gilbert Arenas during this crisis.

Even more interesting, however, will be seeing which team will be willing to take a chance on Gil once the legal proceedings (and suspension from the League) are done.

“Bad franchise. Bad, bad franchise….” Gotta be joking, right?

  • Tombomb

Somebody will get a good deal out of this…..and i dont think it will be Gil.

  • underdog

Maybe I misjudge his situation, but I think at least 15 NBA franchises want to sign Gil, after the Wizards break up with him. Not for a max contract, obviously.

I’m glad it seems that the ‘only’ thing he’s getting charged for is gun possession. From previous stories I was thinking they may come up with perjury and/or other things. Gil is the only one really being talked about, but all the stories seem to confirm Critt had a gun too, so I would think he should be charged as well. I assume if the Wiz decide to void his contract, it will be based upon brining the Guns into the lockerroom versus the actual felony. I would expect the union, the L, Stern, the team, etc, have to really consider consistency of punishment compared to other players with either felony convictions or L rule violations.

The other question about the Wizards is, what’s going to happen with Caron Butler, who doesn’t even resemble his old self.

he should go to the suns and play with nash…. also it would be funny if javaris doesnt get charged with anything and just walk away haha….

  • Dallas J

    Arenas the victim.. right.

  • Monday Night Live

Gilbert will be playing(maybe starting) for a contender in a year or two………

  • onions baby onions

Raaaapppppssss…Gil and CB4 would be a deadly combo. Then again, Gil would need to learn how to pass the ball, he had Jamison and Butler with him and he couldn’t make that work.

  • onions baby onions

@d.j., ya its hilarious how no one really seems to care about Javaris…if I were him, I’d be on a plane to Europe already ballin it up in Spain or something

Seriously, why are we only hearing that there were no guns found at Critt’s place? Wasn’t his loaded gun far more dangerous than Agent Zero’s array of empty ones? I’m just saying. Neither of them should be bringing guns to the workplace, but I’m thinking a loaded one has the potential to cause more harm. Am I missing something?

Gil made the classic error of mistaking his employer for his friend.

@Logues-in case you hadn’t realized, hot-topic articles=increased web traffic=ad revenue. It’s no different than the NY Post running Tiger Woods articles every darn day

is vincent thomas out of his mind? he actually had the nerve to say that the reason gilbert arenas is in this much trouble is because he’s black. (jim rome 1/15)are you serious? is mr thomas a complete idiot, or just an amazingly blatent racist? those are the only 2 reasons there could possibly be to explain such an assinine statement. let me give mr thomas a piece of advice. this is not the 1800′s. black people have all the same chances that white people do, but it’s a lot easier to use the race excuse than to take responsibility for your actions. bringing a gun(not to mention 4) into the workplace is a FELONY. what part of that doesn’t mr arenas or mr thomas understand? should mr arenas get special treatment because he’s a basketball player? i guarantee you, if a poor white guy did the same thing, he’d be in jail-no doubt about it-and he wouldn’t get 30 days or 60 days-he’d get a real sentence. not a slap on the wrist. did mr thomas ever ask himself why mr arenas needs all these guns? apparantly mr arenas did not learn anything from his prior gun possession charge. don’t repeat offenders deserve a harsher sentence, not a more lenient one? perhaps mr thomas might want to rethink his position. and shame on the publisher for allowing such a blatent racist to spew his distorted views onto the public

  • erich

Gilbert is not ticking right if he wants to be supported after he just ruined the image of this franchise, a franchise that invested millions and millions of dollars in him.
He is far away from reality.

whats next for the Wizard? Tanking the season for John Wall

I just really cant find it in me to give a s**t. Gil will play again have we really learned nothing from yet another pro who made a dumb move. Not to mention its the Wizards… They played gangsta with empty guns in a locker room, nobody got in real trouble and did I mention its the Wizards? Last time Gil was in a game Reagan was President. I just really dont care. Theres far to many NBA guys doing positive things including at one point made Gangsta Gil and they never get this much press. Did I mention its the Wizards?

    >> Last time Gil was in a game Reagan was President
By the look of it, last time Dallas watched a game Hilary Clinton was a liberal.

And she was sitting courtside with Bob Dole rockin a Bullets #0 jersey.

Did vincent thomas really say that? Can I get confirmation from this from a person who ISN’T claiming white people get all the same chances as black people?>

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Where did Vincent Thomas say anything about Gilbert Arenas? Was it on NBA . com?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

For the record, Vincent Thomas may be the best writer on the SLAM staff. So…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Well, at least in my opinion. So I want to read whatever he said!

  • Jonny C

@DallasStrokes: i dont see that comment as racist, i see it as a reality. From my own experiences and the people I’ve known, I can definetly say that whites in this country seem to be given better treatment by the legal system than blacks. I’ve known so many white people commit one crime after another and get a slap on the wrist, while so many black people i known do the same things and get locked back up. I dont know how else to describe the trend than to say its racism from the justice system.

Some guys aren’t made for the big time. We all make a valiant effort in what we do, but a lot of us just aren’ made for it. We as a people do un – intelligent things, to put it diplomatically.

well if he goes to the NYK that wld help them w/ their ‘bring a max superstar’ plan i mean gilbert is still good and after all this court and wat not, he shuld (hopefully) have a better mindset. IDK im just assuming…
