Big Z Looking for a Buyout

In a move that should surprise absolutely no one, Zydrunas and his agent are already looking for a way to head back to Cleveland: “As of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, agent Herb Rudoy said he had not spoken to Wizards General Manager Ernie Grunfeld about Washington’s plans. It is generally assumed that the Wizards will buy out the last year of Ilgauskas’ contract, which will pay him $11.5 million. That would leave Ilgauskas free to sign with any team, including the Cavaliers, although he would have to wait 30 days to re-sign with Cleveland. He would not have to wait to sign with another team, but he must be bought out before March 1 in order to be eligible for the playoffs. ‘I’m going to try to get them to do a buy-out, but I’ve already heard from a few teams — good teams — that are really interested in wanting to talk about Z going to play for them,” Rudoy said. “That doesn’t surprise me. He’s still a very good player. He’s a very interesting player who can still be a very good center in this league. I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. I think his heart is in Cleveland, that’s for sure. But we’ll see how this plays out. He’s got 30 days to make a decision if it’s Cleveland. If it’s somebody else, he could make it in a week. His whole decision will be based on what’s best for his career. He’d like to win a championship, that’s for sure. But it’s his call, not mine. I’m just going to give him all the options.”‘

Hah, i saw this one coming. I knew Cavs didnt wanna give him up.

go back home Z. your title awaits.

U have to love the CBA! How is Cleveland gonna come up on Antwan, trade Big Z and he gets to go back??? This may end up being Bron’s best chance 2 win a ring! If he does he stays in Cleveland…

i don’t know, like .. if James wins a title in cleveland .. then he could think he made it … and seek for a new challenge elsewhere ….

  • neaorin

No way James leaves his team if the name of the game is title defense. That’s just not him. We’re getting way ahead of ourselves anyway.

It would be great for the city of Cleveland, the Cavs and Z if he re-signs with them. He’s adored by the fans and has been there for a long while. This is the best chance they’ve had to win a ring and Z should be a part of it. Kind of an amazing situation the Ferry possibly pulled off this trade with only giving up a draft pick.

He’s the Wizards’ player right now and nobody’s forcing them to buy him out. If they do, nobody’s forcing Z to accept the Cavs’ offer and can freely choose to sign with any team that makes him an offer. This is absolutely normal so please stop blaming the CBA or the league over this.

Despite the fact that it’s all but assumed that Z will return to CLE, don’t forget that Z & CLE management have had problems as recently as this season when Z got the Cavs record for games played. ESPN is already reporting that Dallas is gonna pursue him…my Hawks need to as well

Big Z wants to be in cleveland period. But if it can’t happen, I wanna see him in a spurs uniform!

Z will have options to sign with multiple teams. The Cavs make the most sense for him because his familiarity with the systme, his relationship with the city/fans and provide him the best opportunity to win a ring. Outside of money (not minimizing cash), there really isn’t a reason for him to even consider signing anywhere else.

So, the question is, how much money Big Z is ready to give up for his ‘freedom’.

If Z doesn’t get back to Cleveland fast, Nike is going to have to get some damage control going with their newest puppet commercial.

  • LA Huey

Cuban is trying to woo Z during that 30 day wait. Stay loyal, Z! We need you back

  • Shem

Z in a wiz uni would look awful but I hope he wins a title in CLE

He’s just gonna wear a Varejao wig and sit behind the Cavs bench.

  • wrong hoop ricky

@ underdog. after z gets a check for 11.5 mill from washington he’ll have more money than he knows what to do with. he’ll sign for pennies to come back to cleveland. believe it or not the guy likes it in cleveland. he’s got a good relationship with lbj and big shaq and is very close with varejao.

I’m looking forward to when the league gets a new CBA and eliminates this joke of a rule from the books. Everyone knows he’ll go back to Cleveland. The difference between Joe Smith’s under-the-table deal with Minny and all agreements like this is that the buyout/30 day wait/resign is implied, not stated. It should be a one year wait; that’ll discourage these kinds of deals from happening.

That was a great trade made even better because they can sign big Z back, if they dont win a title Lebron might jump off a building or something.
