Can the Knicks Land Tracy McGrady?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Some in the New York media are excited about the possibility of T-Mac moving to Gotham, even if it’s only for a few months. Despite the swirling rumors about a three-team trade that’s supposedly on the table, McGrady (and his massive, expiring contract) may not be going anywhere.

Not yet, anyway. And New York is by no means guaranteed his services.

The Houston Chronicle attempts to sift through the rumor mill:

There have been talks about deals for Andre Iguodala of the 76ers and Caron Butler of the Wizards. There have also been talks with the Knicks and Bulls, including some discussion on three-team deals that would limit the long-term contracts the Rockets would have to take back in a trade.

A report on Yahoo.com Wednesday had the Rockets talking with the Knicks and Wizards about a deal in which the Rockets would receive Butler and Brendan Haywood from Washington, with the Wizards receiving Al Harrington from the Knicks. A person with knowledge of the talks said that deal has not been discussed, but there have been discussions about three-team trades. Those deals are not considered more likely than direct trades and are not expected until next Wednesday or Thursday, if at all.

There remains a chance that the Rockets will not trade McGrady to let his contract expire and seek help in free agency. Rockets players are saying they would be happy to make do. “It’s not up to me to say that, but I believe in the team,” forward Luis Scola said. “The team we have here, we could be good. What’s in our hands is to control the guys who are here, and with the guys who are here, we could be better. We should be better. “That’s what hurts. With the guys who are here, we should be able to compete on any court in the NBA. And we should be able to fight for the playoffs.”

The T-Mac saga is far from over. As always, stay tuned.

All I know is that I tried the 3 team trade listed above on the ESPN Trade Machine and it failed. The Knicks would have to include at least one more contract in that scenario.

Also, the Wizards would also have to add one more contract around the $6 mil per range, like Mike James. I added Eddy Curry as going to the Wiz and Mike James to Houston and the trade worked.

In all seriousness though, if the Rockets got Butler and Haywood, they would be deeper and better than they already are; and they are already pretty good.

^it’s the NBA trade machine on espn.com

  • letsmotor

too bad about the rockets. if yao and tracy were healthy and ron artest knew what loyalty meant, they’d be championship contenders. i mean, can you get better perimeter defense than shane and ron on the same team?!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

@letsmotor. You can. It’s called ronron and kobe.

  • riggs

@nIQ: and when is that going to start to happen?

  • Jose

    Trade Machine is awsome!!!

  • LA Huey

    @riggs: that was mean

  • rob

Can the Knicks Land Tracy McGrady? IDK. Can he actually play?

  • Tim

I believe TMAC still has plenty to offer when he’s healthy and he IS healthy. Personally I would have liked to have seen him get more playing time and prove his worth. The trade would have already happened if they had.

  • rav

have people forgotten that mcgrady is utter shyte?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Just like the Knicks, always trying to get rid of their best players while bringing in temporary guys. Al Harrington is one of the ONLY guys on the team who plays well on a consistent basis, but hey, Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni don’t give a sh!t about that. Let’s get McGrady for a year because his contract expires, even though Al’s does too. We already gave up Jamal Crawford and its not like he’s absolutely flourishing in Atlanta, right?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

That said, T-Mac needs to play again.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Shane Battier and Ron Artest were far better than Kobe and Ron Artest. Come on niQ.

  • letsmotor

shane battier’s the best perimeter defender in the league, niQ. kobe’s good too, but he can’t be as defensively focused as shane.

  • Doug

Kobe and Shane would be even better than Ron and Kobe IMO. Ron Artest is overrated and im glad the Rockets didnt retain him. To much money for him when Ariza will give you slightly less production for less money, without the BS. Caron and Haywood will make the Rockets playoff contenders but I dont think they could get out of the 2nd round without Yao. If we were able to keep Haywwod though and Yao comes back next year, watch out. We would have the best front court in the league. We wouldnt have to play Yao as much during the regular season because Brooks, Caron, Landry, and Lowry would give us consitent offense. Ariza and Shane could be very good role playing defenders. The Rockets should be pretty good next year, imagine if we could pull Jordan Hill (Highly unlikely) away from the Knicks as well.

The Knicks shopping for T-Mac? Seems like an Isiah move….

  • knikknucker

next thing the knicks will be lobbying for Duhon to be elected to the hall of fame. sighhhhh

I don’t understand why everyone is hammering Tracy because he is being paid 23 mil and not playing.

Tracy not playing is a result of the coaching and management staff at Houston plain and simple, he went to them asking for MORE playing time and they told him to forget it, so he asked to be traded ASAP.

Is it Tracys’ fault he was among the best players in the NBA when he signed his contract 5 years ago allowing him to earn 23 million this year.?

Is it Tracys’ fault that while playing for his team he picked up several injuries during that five year period which has affected his capacity to play.

Is it Tracys’ fault that after spending 12 months rehabbing his knee so that he could actually play for Houston again once he gets back to playing Rick the Prick Adelman says “no sorry your not welcome”

All of this BS is the fault of the Houston Rockets coaching and management staff. They agreed a 5 year deal with Tracy, it’s not like they had a gun to their heads, and now they are complaining like they had no choice. Get a grip they agreed the deal now live with the consequences, the same risk applies to any big name player who signs a big money long term contract.

Look at Greg Oden, how many games has he played in total, do you think Portland will tell him no sorry your not welcome when he finishes rehab.

    I think not.

All the injuries Tracy has had over the last few years have been a result of him doing his job and playing for Houston and now he is being made to look like a criminal by the club he has put his body on the line for just because he wanted to play more minutes for them.

Rick Adelman is a piss poor coach and Houston will go nowhere with him. I wonder will he show Yao the same level of disrespect once he has finished his rehab.

Yea man…plus the fact they sign Ariza and give him T-Mac’s #1 jersey…wassup with that??

  • Sopas

Knicks should trade for T-mac. Why? Cos’ it’s gna be their best trade in they landed like Sprewell.

Ohh and about the Rockets being champs, It would’ve probably been true. They got the best perimeter defense (or pretty much best defense in the West back in the 08-09 season). And the Rockets were the only team to push the eventual champs to 7 games.

    Believe it. lol
