Cavs Land Antawn Jamison

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Goodbye, Big Z; hello, Antawn! A five-player trade between Washington, Cleveland and the LA Clippers has been finalized.

When everyone had assumed that Amar’e Stoudemire was headed to Ohio, Danny Ferry nabbed Antawn Jamison instead from the rapidly decomposing Washington Wizards. And in the process, perhaps turned Cleveland into the favorite to win the title this season.

The trade has been confirmed on Twitter (where else?) by many, many, many, many, many media members: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Al Thorton, plus a first round draft pick to Washington; Sebastian Telfair and Antawn to Cleveland; Drew Gooden to the Clippers (who will reportedly waive him.)

The total destruction of the team that used to be known as the Washington Wizards is nearly complete. The Pollins have traded away almost all of the core pieces of the team that went to the Playoffs four times in the last six years. Only Gilbert Arenas remains in DC, and no one expects him to be there much longer.

Cleveland not only landed Jamison — one of the best forwards in the L (averaging 20.5 ppg, 8.8 rpg) — but also keeps the ever improving JJ Hickson. Hats off to you, Danny Ferry.

OK, LeBron. You now have all the horses you need to win a championship. No more excuses.

The Lakers should trade Adam Morrison & a future second pick to the Knicks for Nate Dogg, that sounds good

Damn, the Cavs bench is crowded with good basketball players! But can somebody please explain me, why the Clips plan to waive Drew Gooden after they lost Camby? Oh, yes and I join to the fellow readers, to demand a Bron & Bassy cover ASAP.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

When Leon Powe gets back… Whoa the Cavs are ACTUALLY getting deep! They sucked last year but this year they’ve really improved.

A few points from the comments…
    1. No, this does not make the Cavs a LOCK for the title. It does help, though.
    2. Calm down, no one “needs to go HARD after Drew effin’ Gooden”
    3. Jamieson being 34 years old IS surprising to me.
    Carry on.

And Boston traded away instant offense in Eddie House for instant offense in Nate. Not sure why or how this will turn out…but it’s a move, I guess.

CAN YOU make a cover of a whole team of cavs????featuring shaq..jamisaon..varejao..mo williams..(gibson or hickson) and king james..hope you can do it coz u did it before to the nets but they did not win a chips…hope you can give us a good cover…we will w8…mabuhay slam..

I don’t think it was a good idea to get rid of Z. Ilgauskas was a very good stunt double for Shaq and they had great chemistry. This just might mess up something.

  • jumpman3224

@Anton – Jamison does bring a slightly different dynamic because of his ability to post up and shoot J’s. Mike Brown isn’t exactly known for being innovative offensively, so in my opinion I doubt Cleveland will feature him in the post often, especially when the starters are on the floor. So essentially when Cleveland’s starters are playing there will be an additional jump shooter on the floor. It does give Cleveland more flexibility, so overall it was a good trade. I just don’t think it changes defensive approach much. An interesting lineup they can throw out will be Andy, Antawn, LeBron, Delonte, Mo. But, I think Shaq’s minutes are going to go up in the playoffs.

Wow big trade I guess they arent going after Amare anymore? they should win a championship now if not + MAJOR DISAPOINTMENT

  • james

so basically the cavs got telfair AND jamison for big z, whos just gonna get waived and return anyway. how the hell does that work?!

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

I hate to say it, but the Big Z waiving rumors were for the Suns, not the Wizards. I’m not exactly sure the Wizards will waive Big Z… and I feel really bad for the dude.

This is huge. While everyone else was looking the
other way, the Clips have made two moves which have
them way under the salary cap for next season and in
play to make an offer to one of the big FA’s from
this offseason. Who would turn down the chance to
play in LA with Gordon, Baron, Kaman, and Blake?

  • SonicProof

Kevin martin for carl landry and t-mac? thats what im looking at on ESPN.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

Add Shaq, then add Jamison…deduct Z…What have
the Cavs gained or lost. Not much, just my two cents
Jamison has some serious mileage on him. The run
to the EAST title will be very interesting. Looking
historically at big trades, it takes about a full
year to understand how to fit a new starter into a
game plan. The real question is can these teams
making big trades jell together for a playoff/
championship run and beat the Lakers in a 7 game
series. The championship will have to be taken from
    L.A.!

Also, if Bron now wins a Chip in Cleveland, I sincerely
doubt he leaves. If. In Washington, they will finally
have to play the young guys like McGee, Young, Blatche
and newly acquired Al Thornton. This could be a good nucleus.

@ Ali, I don’t think it will take quite as long as a year just because LeBron is such and unselfish player. Fully understand the way the offense works will take awhile, but in the short term this should make cleveland the favorite. I’d personally like to see a lineup of Mo, Bron, Antawn, JJ, and Sha

Fully understand the way the offense works will take awhile, but in the short term this should make cleveland the favorite. I’d personally like to see a lineup of Mo, Bron, Antawn, JJ, and Shaq on the court all at the same time. I’m sure it will happen at some point, but that would be just freakish

I’m waiting for the news of Kevin Martin going to the
Rockets to be posted. That came completely out of leftfield,
but now the Rockets are pretty serious contenders in the

Yeah if the Cavs don’t make it to the Finals this year then I don’t know what to say. I’m a die hard laker fan but I believe this move could propel the cavs to championship status.

  • http://Slamadamonth.com Mvp23100

Its a wrap cavs made the best two moves this season out of the contenders diesel and jamison it wont take long to implement jamison because lebron is unselfish hes never had a problem chemistry wise when cle gets a new player hopefully z comes back for the loyalty factor but its tight on the rest of the L everybody else is looking fragile and the lakers showed they dont want it without jamison this is another 20-10 problem cle 2010 champs

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

Word up Sizzle!!! I hear you, but in past the Cavs
have made moves to accomadate LBJ with quality players
and make a push to the championship game again (and
to actually win it) but for some reason every
supporting cast LBJ gets fails in the biggest games in
the playoffs. LBJ is hands down the best TEAM player
in the association, we all know that. Can a aging
Shaq and Jamison put it together and give them what
they need to move towards a ring in the short term?
Boston and Orlando ain’t going to lay down…and a
couple of them lower tier East teams aint no joke
either! Best record don’t mean nothing come playoff
    time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

    It means home court advantage.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

Hahahah…Yeah ask LBJ bout that homecourt last
season. In this day in age you gotta steal one away
from home to win it all…Is home court adavantage
really that great to have when you got some hungry,
starving young guns (i.e. ATL/TOR/CHI) pulling out
all stops, dragging you to a game 7, Hahaha…..

  • hoodsnake

So Bron loses his scoring crown to Durant but gets a very shiny consolation on his finger. Schweeeeeeet!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I don’t like this move, should have gave more away for Amare, Jamison is a good role player to me and will not make the Cavs the team to beat. Mark my words, The Cavs have the best record in the NBA with their core, why add Jamison who needs the ball and shots. I don’t like the trade, to me it messes with team chemistry and now other players get less burn. If I was a Cavs fan, I would be leary of this trade. I would have kept the core, plus Jamison is 33, Amare was the better talent at 27 and could played with Lebron for the next seven years, I even would have went with Troy Murphy/ Mike Duleanvy over Jamison, Just my thoughts.

  • http://deleted Tyler Whitcomb

Now they have Hickson and Varejoa off the bench, damn!

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

This was a good trade, they loose Z for 30 days and gain a long stretch 4. However, this is still the Cavs. A team with 1 all-star, an aging front-court and a bench of moderate players. They are far from being stacked with talent. Z, Andy, Mo, D-West, JJ, boobie, Powe (who hasn’t played) etc. aren’t considered great players by any stretch. Mo had one good year and faded in the play-offs, Shaq is well past his prime and now Jamison is finally the quality player the team needed. But make no mistake this team is still Lebron with 4 other guys. There are many teams with more talented players (Magic, Hawks, Lakers, Nuggets etc) to truly compliment their superstar. This is a talent upgrade with a second potential scorer, but everything they accomplish as a team is still 100% in Lebron’s hands – just like last year.

  • WOODY

    1. Stand pat you say. Lebron wanted someone – Amare or Jamison. Suns said no Amare so Cavs made Lebron happy with Jamison. Lebron happy – get it.
    2. Wizards obviously clearing cap space and wanted Z’s contract – not Z. Probably will be bought out this week,(with money provided by Cavs under the table – wink, wink). Z back to massive standing ovation in late March.
    3. Rotations will be a big problem. You got 11 or 12 starters or near starters to play. Brown may look at some strange combos for a while, but he’s smarter than he looks and will have killer rotation by playoff time. Some really good players won’t play much though, (Gibson, Powe).
    4. This business of trading for money, not talent, is a little strange. If owners weren’t so cheap though, they wouldn’t choose to ruin their teams to get under the cap and save a million or two of their billions.
    5. We now have about 15 teams clearing cap space to sign the three or four really good free agents, (who probably are staying put anyway). Some pretty bad players are going to get huge contracts next summer.
    6. Lakers, please sign Gooden. I’d start him if I were you.
