Cavs Land Antawn Jamison

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Goodbye, Big Z; hello, Antawn! A five-player trade between Washington, Cleveland and the LA Clippers has been finalized.

When everyone had assumed that Amar’e Stoudemire was headed to Ohio, Danny Ferry nabbed Antawn Jamison instead from the rapidly decomposing Washington Wizards. And in the process, perhaps turned Cleveland into the favorite to win the title this season.

The trade has been confirmed on Twitter (where else?) by many, many, many, many, many media members: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Al Thorton, plus a first round draft pick to Washington; Sebastian Telfair and Antawn to Cleveland; Drew Gooden to the Clippers (who will reportedly waive him.)

The total destruction of the team that used to be known as the Washington Wizards is nearly complete. The Pollins have traded away almost all of the core pieces of the team that went to the Playoffs four times in the last six years. Only Gilbert Arenas remains in DC, and no one expects him to be there much longer.

Cleveland not only landed Jamison — one of the best forwards in the L (averaging 20.5 ppg, 8.8 rpg) — but also keeps the ever improving JJ Hickson. Hats off to you, Danny Ferry.

OK, LeBron. You now have all the horses you need to win a championship. No more excuses.

Telfair has been in the League 6 years now – he is what he is.

  • TyMo

I’ve never seen a team self-destruct as fast as the Wizards have. That Arenas thing was what, less than 2 months ago? Now everyone’s gone, except the one player who should have been gone a long time ago.

  • LA Huey

Yo, Marco. You should only question the Clips if they do things that make sense.

  • A.

    @James the Balla:

He flew to LA. If the trade becomes official, he’s playing tomorrow. With Boston.

  • Joey E.

yeah, my bad James if you misunderstood. The Celtics are in L.A. to play the Lakers tomorrow. TNT game. Kobe is probably out

  • jumpman3224

I actually think this trade is more one sided than the Lakers Grizzlies trade for Pau. If the Cavs get Z back they basically gave up a pick for Jamison. That being said, I dont think Jamison makes the Cavs much of a different team to defend/match up with than they were before. Should be an interesting playoff season.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

cavs only had to give up z? and theyre proly gonna get him back in a month? wow. i think clippers said hey, heres a way we might be able to screw the lakers. new wiz core, gil, josh howard, al thornton. its my turn to shoot, no, my turn! i really hope the wiz hold on to z.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Yeah I was going to say lol.

  • jumpman3224

The LBJ/Telfair SLAM Cover finally gets to the big time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Does anyone know if the Lakers are in talks with anyone, Hinrich? Amar’e? Wade? lol anyone?

  • Joey E.

    lakers are standing pat

  • jumpman3224

@james – ESPN.Com put a story up a half hour that they are not looking to acquire anyone and will be defending ther crown as is.

  • LA Huey

Lakeshow should stand pat. They have enough chemistry issues as it is without adding another major rotation guy. Kobe needs to reign in the gunning and be more efficient and Phil, along with the rest of the Lakers, need to help him out.

  • AiRsMiTh

@ Marco: The Clippers are trying to clear up cap space in hopes of landing one of the many big name free agents next season. That’s what the owner claims, but it is not like I think they’ll have any luck with that anyways.

@ witness23: I think Jamison is the better choice. He is more versatile than Amare, and I think he is just as prone to injury as Big Z. He just looks fragile. He is definitely an upgrade no matter how you look at it. Plus Amare wouldn’t adjust as well as Jamison to such a reduced role.

  • The Philosopher

Jamison is the James Worthy to LeBron’s Magic Johnson. Shaq plays Kareem, Varejo is Rambis, Z’ll be back. The Lakers are in trouble. Big, huge trouble. I don’t know what else to say. If Cleveland stays healthy……………….

  • clevlandCHAMPS2010

wow poor Z they better get him back he deserves the ring that the cavs now WILL win

  • rob

Now THAT was a good trade. Well done Cavs. Not enough to be champions though.

  • http://www.youtube.com/ L

Damn! THATS how you do a trade! Good work Danny! I kinda feel the clips were burned in this deal though

  • http://www.youtube.com/ L

How will the rotation go though?

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

what happpens if they lose to the magic again?

  • LCD Screen Cleaner

What a swindle, taking advantage of the weakness of the WIZ and basically deciding for them that they should rebuild. No worries for Z; Cavs have the San Antonio style-free agent release/resign after 30 days thing all planned out.

  • witness23

I think you keep Hickson as a starter for the time being maybe 10 games before throwing Jamison in there. Powe should be back by then too Cavs are really solid now and deeper then the Lakers bigman wise, hopefully we get back big Z but the wizards practically have no big men. STAT is bustin ass right now against the mavs, he really wants to get outta there

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

@Tarzan… it won’t be Bron’s fault. It will be his sh!tty teammates faults!!!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

James the B. i like that small sense of unraveling i’m getting from your last comment: “Hinrich, Amare, WADE, anyone??”. Funny stuff there.

  • The D Train

and the disparity between the have’s and the have-not’s grows wider yet again. i hate these trades where the guy gets dealt, waved, then re-ups. total horse-sh1t, and should definitely not be allowed in the next CBA.

  • Logues

cavs will NOT win the championship

  • The D Train

so if i’m not mistaken, over the last couple of years we’ve seen Antawn Jamison and Pau Gasol traded away for a 3 first round picks, Marc Gasol, Kwame Brown and Javaris Crittenton. and we wonder why there are only 4-5 teams a year that can win the title. i wish that this kind of stuff existed back when MJ was in the league. would have been awesome to see Philly trade Barkley to Chicago for Jud Buechler and a 2nd round pick. and then maybe pick up Gary Payton for Bill Wennington (don’t worry, Seattle is going to buy him out and he will promptly resign with Chicago) and the contract of Randy Brown, who is inactive, but has yet to file retirement papers with the league.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

@jumpman3224 ” I dont think Jamison makes the Cavs much of a different team to defend/match up with than they were before.”
    Then you’re a f*cking idiot.

  • rob

@Tarzan Cooper the art of not shaking hands pt. 2 is gonna happen

  • The Sammy G

So the cavs got Antawn Jamison for pretty much just a first round pick (Z should return?)..crazy!

  • The Sammy G

So the cavs got Antawn Jamison for pretty much just a first round pick (assuming Z returns)..crazy!

  • Ed

Damn Z just got the Nomar Garciaparra 2004 Treatment.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

lol at rob!!!!!!! and the Clips UNLOADED 2 USELESS BAD CONTRACTS IN THORNTON AND SABBY AND SOMEONE HERE IS QUESTIONING THE MOVE?!?!? if they get JoeJohnson and/or Amare next season Dunleavy finally did something good!

  • J-Ro

Just heard a rumor the Salmons got traded to the Bucks for Kurt Thomas and Fransisco Elson.

  • http://www.youtube.com/ L

Holy ho ho’s!! The Cavs also get Sebastian Telfair! Jeez talk about a bench! Sebastian, Boobie, West(s), JJ, Sideshow Varjao and possibly a big Z returning to Cle. Damn!

  • Jose

Big Z better get resigned by Cleveland…

  • http://facebook.com/jray2009 Jray

I want to say i hope this works out like the Shaq-to-Phoenix trade but Jamison compliments this team. If i was a Cavs fan, i would be ecstatic

  • Shem

@James the Balla: Oh right, I forgot about Hickson. You’d think someone they payed 40 mill for would start. Wow, they have a lot of big men especially if they get Z back

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

    BOOM.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@L: Theres at least 7 better benches in the league than that, okay, maybe 5, but still…Sabby´s a scrub, Boobie is like 10 times better

  • http://www.youtube.com/ L

@Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers true but just saying. Help is help and bigman wise the Cavs are set

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Yeah ahh the Lakers are still repeating. The Cavs are going to loose to the Magic in the Eastern Finals again. Celtics little run is OVER!.

  • neaorin

To the “damn the Cavs ONLY had to give up Z to get Jamison” crowd: please open your eyes to the realities of today’s NBA. Realize that this is the market for a 33-year old player who’s on an eight figure contract for two more seasons. Pretty soon you’ll also realize that the chances for a lockout are 99.9%. Well done Ferry for not overpaying. Hope Z gets bought out. Go CAVS!

  • KB24

Shouldn’t the Lakers trade Adam Morrison and his $5mill expiring contract(Which the Knicks would take to create more space for free agent frenzy 2010, and they hate Nate) for Nate Robinson & his $4mill expiring contract? The Lakers get more production for less money & the Knicks get cap space, why would the Knicks trade Robinson to the Celtics for House’s hefty contract? And yes the Lakers NEED DREW GOODEN, think about it, it could be SHAQ, VAREJAO, BIG Z, JAMISON, POWE, & HICKSON vs. BYNUM, GASOL, ODOM, POWELL & MBENGA, add GOODEN to the Lakers and it evens their frontlines out a little bit, and he wouldn’t be a bench warmer, the Lakers only have Kobe, Fisher, Artest, Gasol, Bynum, Odom, Brown & Farmar as their main rotation, Walton, Powell, Mbenga, Vujacic & Morrison SUCK!!!!!!

  • KB24

Getting Kirk Hinrich on the Lakers for Adam Morrison & Sasha Vujacic would be even better for the Lakers. Kirk Hinrich could contain Deron Williams of the Jazz, Chauncey Billups of the Nuggets, Jason Kidd of the Mavericks, Tony Parker of the Spurs, Andre Miller of the Blazers, Steve Nash of the Suns and thats just if we meet those teams in the West. If we make it to the finals he could contain Mo Williams of the Cavs, Jameer Nelson of the Magic, or Rajon Rondo of the Celtics. Think about it, the Lakers current point guards make any opposing point guard look like an all-star. If the Lakers have this team then they will 3-peat: PG-Hinrich/ SG-Bryant/ SF-Artest/ PF-Odom/ C- Gasol/ Bench PG- Fisher/ SG- Brown/ SF- Powell/ PF- Gooden/ C- Bynum & Farmar & Mbenga on top of that, the Lakers would be unstoppable!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • clipperfan

I’d like to clear up things for the people that don’t pay any attention to the Clippers 99.9 % of the season.

The Camby trade was made because they weren’t going to re-sign him after season. He was gonna ask for at least 5 mil and the clipps need to continue to develop D. Jordan. So basically, this trade allows them to save money(Camby had about 2 mil in incentives that POR will now pay), they get 2 decent players with expiring contracts, and 1.5 mil.

This trade was made to dump Telfair and his 2.8 mil option for next year! Thorton had his moments but he’s not irreplaceable, obviously. Besides, they’re cap money will be used on a SF so the writing was on the wall. Could we have gotten more for Thorton straight up? yes. Would somebody else take telfair straight up? Hell no!! So that is why it was done.

SO, what does this mean? It means the Clipps will now be left with
    PG B. Davis
    SG E. Gordon
    SF $$$$
    PF B. Griffin
    C C. Kaman, D. Jordan
    2010 lottery pick

They’re gonna throw that cash at Lebron, D-Wade, J Johnson, R Gay, etc.
Did they have to clear all that cap space? No. But we’re the Clippers so it’s gonna take all that cash to land a star, right?

  • clipperfan

-To add to my previous post
If they can’t land a free agent, then they could still absorb the contract of a star player from another team for cap relief. Similar to the way they landed Camby from Denver for the option to swap 2nd round picks. Examples would be Iguodala(shopped around) or Josh Smith(might get shopped around after JJ signs his extension).

    * Also, we’ll be getting a new coach. Hopefully a good one!

  • The D Train

@neaorin: Ferry didn’t come close to overpaying…and it’s not like Hickson and a pick was going to be overpaying for Jamison or Stoudemire. The reality is that he was bidding against no one. So even a jackass like Ferry, who in Lebron’s career has surrounded him with exactly one all-star (and an injury replacement after all the Cavs whining, no less), couldn’t mess this one up. Jamison (at about 20 ppg and 8 reb) for a very low first round pick (after Z is bought out) may make for an exciting trade for the Wizards accountants and Cavs fans, but the rest of the league has to swallow some serious bullsh1t. I will say, however, that I hope that Jamison helps Lebron and Co win a title, just so we can hear the Lakers bitch about a questionable trade that possibly titled title outcomes for the near future. Also, I totally agree on the lockout. It ain’t going to be pretty, and the players are going to be taking a serious beatdown at the hands of The Sternbot. Lets hope something shifts so that expiring contracts are no longer the single greatest asset a team could have.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

KB24 is great value. Who wouldn’t trade Nate for Ammo? Hahahahah.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

Assuming Blake Griffin comes back from injury. These are the Clippers we’re talking about, right?
