Gilbert Arenas is Writing Again

Sadly, his Op Ed in the WaPo isn’t nearly as much fun as his blogs used to be: “I understand the importance of teaching nonviolence to kids in today’s world. Guns and violence are serious problems, not joking matters — a lesson that’s been brought home to me over the past few weeks. I thought about this when I pleaded guilty as charged in court and when I accepted my NBA suspension without challenge. That message of nonviolence will be front and center as I try to rebuild my relationship with young people in the D.C. area. I know that won’t happen overnight, and that it will happen only if I show through my actions that I am truly sorry and have learned from my mistakes. If I do that, then hopefully youngsters will learn from the serious mistakes I made with guns and not make any of their own. I am trying hard to right my wrongs. The one that will be hardest to make right is the effect my actions have had on kids who see NBA players as role models. Professional athletes have a duty to act responsibly and to understand the influence we have on all those kids who look up to us. I failed to live up to that responsibility when I broke the law and set such a bad example. Washington’s children, parents and fans all deserve better from me, especially after all the kindness they’ve shown me over the years.”

I feel the Washington Wizards let Gilbert down, I have lost all respect for the Wizards organization as show on my website

I’m not sure what happened behind the scenes, but I’m glad that Gil seems to be taking responsibility and at least giving lip service to righting his wrongs. I’m not convinced he’s genuine and not now saying theses things just because he hopes that he’ll get a lower sentence for showing remorse. He acted like an ass and continued to do so and I’m not sure what he expeced the Stern, team mgt/owners, or his teammates to do with him. No way to justify what he did, just hope he’s really learned now.

agent zero should come up with an idea to fix this mess. i look up to him from being a zero to hero, now he’s back to being a zero. if only “Agent Zero” can be a “HERO” again. everybody deserves a 2nd chance, and gil should grab this. be a HERO!

He should have said this from the get-go. At this point nobody cares.

Im saying this is a 100% genuine letter. Nobody is saying Gilbert is a bad person. The way he acted in the days following the media frenzy was worse than what he did. It would take an extremely open minded person to accept this letter as Gilbert’s apology; and we all have our predjudices.

*nobody = me. Actually, their are plenty of people trying to vilify gilbert. He is a arrogant person, he is somewhat of a knucklehead, but he is not evil in my opinion.

Gil definitely needs a 2nd chance.. everyone knows he’s not the only one guilty of this crime.. Most ballers have guns , maybe even more than what Gil was caught with.. It only happens that Gil was used as an example by the league on how they would handle such a situation, and yes it was a bad joke.. But Agent 0 should ball again ..

he deserves to play again, definitely.

I don’t think Gil wrote this letter, but I do think the message conveyed in it is real. I’m not sure if his taking responsibility is real, but I definitely believe he deserves a second chance. The good news for him is that next season (assuming he’s not in prison) he’ll have another chance. Only time will tell if he screws it up. With his history or inappropriate jokes etc, it’s clear he’s more misguided than evil – I just hope he get’s some help to get on the write path again.
