Pau Gasol Unhappy With Kobe’s Shooting Spree

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

While the rest of the world was busy feting Kobe Bryant for surpassing the great Jerry West on the all-time scoring list last night in Memphis, his teammate Pau Gasol stewed over the lack of touches he received in the loss (only ten shot attempts compared to KB’s 28), indicating a growing frustration with his role within the Laker offense.

So, is this Kobe vs. Shaq, the remix? Probably not — Gasol isn’t nearly as combative or willing to fight Bryant for top dog status as O’Neal was — but it’s certainly something worth keeping an eye on.

The OC Register tried to capture Pau’s sullen mood last night:

Gasol has on several occasions offered passive-aggressive comments about not getting the ball enough after Lakers losses in the past. This time, the comments leaned a little harder toward aggressive, particularly when it came to Bryant.

Gasol was asked about Bryant’s new record and offered politically correct – and believably authentic – commentary (“I’m proud of him; I congratulate him”) before adding the kicker: “Now we can focus on winning games again.” Bryant and Gasol have a good relationship, no doubt. There is a fundamental mutual respect, a shared obsession with the intricacies of the game and a necessary understanding that Bryant is the alpha male and Gasol is not.

Bear in mind that Phil Jackson was a little miffed at Bryant on his historic night, too. Jackson told the team at halftime, when Bryant had 23 of the Lakers’ 50 points, that Bryant was “forcing the action.” Jackson also said in the halftime locker room, alluding to the 29 points Bryant needed in the game to pass Jerry West: “Let’s get him over the hump, so we can play team ball again.”

Bryant, unlike of late, actually shot spectacularly well last night (57% from the field); it’s just that he took way too many shots. To date, Kobe is averaging more shot attempts than anyone else in the NBA.

When Shaq was traded to Miami following the calamitous 2004 season, Kobe demanded that Laker management get him the help he needed to win titles. They eventually came through for him, and then some.

It’s important for Bryant to remember that his teammates — especially the big fellas — can play a little, and that he doesn’t have to try and do everything himself each night.

Kobe is a great scorer and recently hes been a better teammate unformtunately every so often e goes off on one and wont pass it off to anyone else not even Pau.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Oh, there he is… thought whiny Pau had retired that part of his personality, glad to see it’s still alive and kicking. So a big isn’t too happy with the amount of touches he get’s playing next to Kob’s? What else is new?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

    Well.

  • Marcel Mutoni

As I stated on Twitter, KB will respond to this one of two ways: 1)shooting even more out of spite, 2)refusing to shoot altogether. I love this game!

  • riggs

kobes a ball hogging douche? what else is new?

  • http://www.youtube.com/ L

Well now. Kobe has been and always will be a ball hog. When does he not?

  • JoeMaMa

Marcel, he may option 3: win another championship. That shut up alot of people, didn’t it?

  • truthteller

I love kobe and I’m his biggest supporter but sometimes I think Kobe shoots too many times and forces a lot of his shots! Kobe doesn’t and shouldn’t have to do that anymore. He actually has a great team around him. I think now that he has passed Jerry West he can now become a facilitator again.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Yeah it seems to have been a growing concern for the Laker’s team. Particularly during times when Kobe has evidently been hurting, such as the Jazz game, where he’s shot the ball over 25+ times.

I’m a big fan of Kobe and have been since he entered the league but shooting the ball on an off night, which happens to anybody, and not passing the ball can show a lack of confidence in your team mates. Even though they’ll never admit it they’ll surely feel it.

Bryant has the strongest lineup in the league, even without him the Laker’s will easily be a playoff calibre team, maybe not title contenders but a solid team that could push any other to the limit. Yet Bynum only managed 3 shots the entire game. You’ve got one of the biggest potential star centers in the league in Bynum at just 22 years of age. Who while Gasol was out was posting 20-10 nights at times.

Can you imagine if both Gasol, Bynum or even Odom were allowed more shots and touches of the ball if Nash or Paul were running point? All three would be 20-10 threats on a nightly basis.

I know, I might cop a bit of flack from the Kobe Fanatics out there, I’m one of them too (I’ve even got his old slam mag with Just like Mike only Better… 07-08 edition), but I’m just saying he has a lot of potential with his other team mates here. Just hope it’s not a repeat of the 04 Finals saga.

I too was upset at his shots in the first half but not for taking them but for missing them. Even free throws. It was awfull to see until he started making them. When he gets on a roll it’s beautiful to watch, but I would like to see him get Bynum involved early. That will pay big dividends in the latter parts of the game. When you don’t get Bynum going early he loses touch with the game and becomes foul prone.

  • jumpman3224

Last night’s box score reminded me of the January 2006 Lakers. Kobe over 40, not much else from anywhere and a starting center with less than 5 shots. For the Lakers to have a real chance of repeating Kobe needs to regain a focus on getting everyone involved so that teams will be forced to defend Bynum, Gasol and Bryant instead of just Bryant.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Why does everybody refer to Kobe winning championships? He didn’t win them alone. His first three were highly influenced and contributed mostly by Shaq who at that time was the most dominant player in the league. They even brought in the Zone defense into the NBA because no single or double team could stop the guaranteed two points + foul he would get. Hence the term “Hack a Shaq” because his only weakness was shooting further than 4 feet from the basket.

Then 2009 was influenced once again by Gasol who at that time was already a dominant figure in the Grizzlie team, along with the strengthening growth of Bynum.

What happened to the Laker team once Shaq left in the summer of 04? How far did they get into the playoffs in 05, 06, and 07 when Kobe was the dominant “Shoot the ball with every touch” figure of the team? It wasn’t until he got an effective “Team mate” that could do all the unnoticed work, of rebounds, defense, and option B presence.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always thought Kobe’s one of the greatest shooting guards to ever play the game. It’s just that everybody throws in “His” championships while forgetting about what his team mates brought him. As everybody seems to be labeling Kobe as the ONLY reason why the Laker’s won those championships.

  • kobesbestfriend

Pau needs 2 know his roll and shut his mouth!b4 having the good fortune of being teamed with the best player on the planet he couldnt win a single playoff game!if mamba wants the ball u better give it 2 him!

  • nnnnnn

Pau needs to stop complaining. If he and the other players beside Artest would’ve been aggressive they would’ve won – he was way too passive and complaining about every little call – he and Bynum stunk up the joint – don’t blame Kobe for doing what he needs to do to keep his team close when everybody else was lethargic

  • http://www.basketball247.co.uk Greg Tanner

Eduardo – I hear what you’re saying, but no one can, or has, won championships on their own.

  • jumpman3224

cosign @Greg Tanner. You can’t find any team that has one based off one single player. The Heat got damn close with Wade. But, trust Kobe played a vital role to the three-peat and Shaq wouldnt have won any of those without him. As far as 05, 06, 07. I think having a few down years is acceptable in anyone’s career. He carried a crappy team to the playoffs in two of those years.

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

It’s nothing new that Kobe isn’t a team player and wants the ‘glory’ for himself. Kobe, like MJ is a great athlete and is driven by winning. With that said, I’m sure Pau isn’t the only player that feels this way and at least in private I’d bet Bynum, Artest, Odom, (and Phil) etc. all feel the same way. As good as the Lakers are, they would be MUCH better if Kobe played team ball (the way Magic did and Lebron does). However, if I have to pick one player to ride or die with – I’d ride with Kobe.

  • T-Money

You’d think people would accept this by now. The Lakers may or may not win the title this year but one thing that is certain is that Kobe will keep chucking. That’s who he is, that’s what he does. And he’s damn good at it, for better or worse.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Marcel is toying with the NBA word police with this headline.

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

    Well, indeed.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com TADOne

“Pass the ball, jerk!” Pau did not necessarily add.

  • Jake

Did any of you watch the game last night? As a team the Lakers shot 44% percent in the first half last night,WITH the damage that Kobe did to the Grizzlies. They were +10 with Kobe in the game scoring and -12 with him on the bench. When you are shooting almost 60% for the game, you better take more shots than the rest of your team.By the way, every one of you would be praising the Lakers and Kobe if he nailed another game winner. But he passed the ball to Ron Artest who promptly missed .Oh by the way,the Lakers just ended an 8 game road trip and they had a 5 game winning streak during that period.Pau Gasol wasn’t doing nearly enough to get open during the game, and was playing with fouls. That’s not even to mention the fact that Zach Randolph ate him alive. The rest of the Lakers minus Artest,Gasol and Bryant shot 30.5 percent.THAT is where the problem lies, not with Kobe Bryant. If you want to take 28 shots you should learn how to not foul so you can play more than 30 minutes Pau.And trying rating better than a -7 on the metric stats next time.Big whiner.Oh and thanks for letting KG destroy you in the 08 Finals,Jerk.

  • T-Money

”Oh by the way,the Lakers just ended an 8 game road trip and they had a 5 game winning streak during that period.” That’s a nice way of saying that they went 5-3 on the road trip. You work in PR?

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

im a fan of gasol´s game BUT he got outplayed and outbullied by his lil brotha. unless kobe gets his 9 for 28 on theres no reason to complain, he kept them in the game

  • http://twitter.com/manueii ManueII

Im 5’9 if i got to jack up 30 shots a game. I would put money. MONEY. that i could at least get 13 of those to go in. but 9 /28 nights do not help. AT ALL. And i am a Los Angeles native, so i get to see the mamba in action. If your a lakers fan & your wondering why Ron Artest doesnt Score. Why Bynum doesnt score more with PAU or PAU SCore more with BYNUM. ITS BECAUSE OF THIS. This team shouldve potentially contended to beat or at least match the Bulls RECORD SEASON. BUT. SINCE my dude the MAMBA plays like this. IT WONT HAPPEN. Still i believe he is the most “SKILLED” player. But the reason LBJ wins is because, he gets his team involved. And i still say this. If LBJ KB24′s talent around him. HE WOULDVE ONE MORE THAN ONE RING BY NOW.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    He shot 57 percent.
I respect Pau, but if you want shots, get on the offensive glass.

  • http://www.google.com rushmelo

Kobe Bryant is the best basketball player in the world.
    BS!!!!
he’s a damn ball hog and will never realize he has players who deserve 12+ shot attempts per game and its NOT about him all the time.

  • Jake

@T-Money.Last time I checked,5-3 for a road trip is a damn good record. Most teams finish either at or below .500 on the road. They’re also 7-3 in their last 10 and 14-6 in their last 20.That’s a good record, especially for a team that is playing with a superstar that has 3 injuries that we know of,a complaining second banana and a very underwhelming point guard/second unit.

Who taught Manuell how to type?

  • T-Money

Allen: to be fair, Pau’s comment weren’t about the last game only. Kobe shot 41% in January and had multiple 30+ shots games. That’s whack.

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

He shot 57 percent and they lost. I respect Kobe’s game but it he wants to win more – he needs to get his team more involved.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

If any of you have played organized team ball, you know that this is part of the game, wins, losses, someone will always have something to say, Good or Bad, especially when a mic is pushed in their grill and reporters are hounding them. Not a big issue in La-La-Land. All-Star break is going to do alot of team some good. Question is who will put the pieces together for the 2nd half of the season!

  • http://myspace.com/rsaenz24 RoG23

That’s the difference between kobe and jordan, talent wise there like twins. Kobe constantly has problems with his teamates. Jordan made them better. Kobe was GIVEN good players. No one can say that kobe developed gasol. It seems like kobe just uses gasol in the playoffs to win. But regular season is all about kobe tryin to be the goat.

  • http://www.slamonline.com MooButter

I don’t think Pau wants to contend for top dog on the lakers, just a better mix. 28 shots to 10 is a big spread. 23 to 15 sounds better. Plus Pau is a great offensive option. Lakers are a better team that way and Kobe can make his life easier by getting others involved, don’t let the defense just key on him.

  • http://myspace.com/rsaenz24 RoG23

When gasol is at his best he is arguably the best post today. Its the guards responsibility to get posts involved and motivated to play their @sses off. Problem could be that LA needs a TRUE point guard.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

RoG23. Jordan went real hard on his teammates unlike Kobe. BJ Armstrong, Scottie and several others had issue with Jordans tactics. Yeah he was a better teammate, but Chi-Town kept they shi* in-house and the reporters and public didn’t get know everything that went on in their locker room, unlike these days.

  • Jake

Michael Jordan had gigantic problems with his teammates not named Scottie Pippen. Why do you think the Bulls rotated their supporting cast every few years during the Jordan years?I agree with Ali whole heartedly. This is all part of the game. You can’t win them all.If the Lakers win last night, there is a big article on ESPN this morning about the greatness of this years Lakers and how Kobe Bryant willed them to a 6-2 record, all the while playing through nagging injuries and dealing with teammates who aren’t committed to rebounding and playing defense.I’m pointing at you again Pau.

  • fahrenheit

Why don’t Gasol man up and let his playing do the talking? He’s been balling like a girl the whole roadtrip, letting the physical play of Cleveland and Boston get to him. The fact that Bynum was left in during crunch time vs Boston, and not Gasol, says it all.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

@Rog23. MJ punched one of his teammates in the face at practice…twice.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

    The sky isn’t always falling.

  • Epsilon Nupe

El Pablo Gagolina es el mejor jugador del mundo, eve better than Kobe.

  • rob

I understand Pau’s frustration, but yesterday he was shooting sh*t, all the Lakers except for Artest, played poorly. Kobe was the only player making the shots. And let’s not forget he didn’t take the last one, he gave Artest the chance to win the game and Ron missed. I agree he’s been forcing too many shots lately but yesterday was not the case.

So Pau, when are you gonna start playing defense???

  • Kas

I dont think you can say he shot to much when he shot 57 %

  • Justin

Gasol needs to man up. He got bullied by ZBo and his brother last night. He shrunk against Garnett and was so ineffective that he didn’t play in the ending moments of the Boston game.

Kobe told him to be more selfish. He wasn’t. That’s on him.

  • http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

@Manuell “Im 5′9 if i got to jack up 30 shots a game. I would put money. MONEY. that i could at least get 13 of those to go in” Are you talking about the NBA? The key phrase here is “if i got to”, because you wouldn’t get the chance, because I going to assume you don’t have the skills to play in the NBA. There’s a reason Kobe “gets to” jack up many shots. He’s awesome.

  • LA Huey

This is really about Pau needed to misdirect the story in all of Spain after getting punked by his little brother. Also, I hoped Pau’s vented to Mamba behind the scenes already and we just don’t know. Otherwise, this complaining via the media about your Alpha Dog…sounds like an awful idea.

  • http://jayemmbee.blogspot.com ClutchPerformer

he hogs the ball what else is new.
when he won no one says jack about it, but now it seems like a slight falter it comes out, and then the Kobe huggers come out and say oh but hes got 4 titles, 3 of those titles were cuz of Shaq, being the MVP on the team meaning best on the squad, the latest one is his first as top dog and even then they had to bring someone in to get him there, cuz when he was top dog all on his own with shaq gone we saw how succesful he was

with Kobe you watch and theres possessions you just know anybody else would have passed, itsw like pass the damn ball , but because he makes them no one say anything, but in that loss they got exposed, Eric Snow was saying it on NBA TV, if your gonna pass to Ron do it earlier, but he kept it so long he might as well have took the shot or beat Gasol off the Dribble, but he wanted to go for the win to cap off his record night but realized mid shot he couldnt make it passed it, but at that point when you see Kobe elevating who really thinks hes gonna pass and is ready to catch and shoot as a result, even the D did think so.

this is why he will never be better than Jordan, jordan was willing to give it up earlier to make game winnners, or had mentality to draw the d and get some one else open and they get the Glory, (Steve Kerr ,John Paxon, or in the Double Nickle Game against the Knicks) but Kobe is too obsessed that he makes it than to pass, Jordan and his teammates had beef cuz of his high standards to make everyone better and win, while Kobe its beef cuz hes hogging the ball and not passing, and jacking up shots. its a team sport afterall.

him and lebron should switch teams (cavs pre shaq) that way LBJ finally has good back up, and Kobe can jack up shots and no one can argue he has back up and should pass

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    T Money
If Kobe was shooting poorly, that’s even more offensive rebounds. Get on the glass and eat if you can’t get touches from your teammates. It’s a proven fact that if a big man hustles on the glass, he will get rewarded by his teammates eventually.

  • UnRel

of course everyone wants shots.. but saying.. ‘now we can focus on winning games” is a lot different that the headline “Gasol unhappy with Kobe”.. let’s not read too much into it.. cause Coach PJ said the same thing about “getting him over the hump”.. gasol was on the bench against boston.. and jumped and cheered when kobe his the game winner.. and now this?.. it’s a little bit too much hype on a few quotes.. lakers shooting and lack of passing didn’t lose the game.. the lack of rebounding did.. check the reb and offensive rebound differences.. and let’s not bring in LBJ in this discussion.. cause the grizz beat the cavs in december.. and the box scores are pretty similar.. do the homework..

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Co-sign UnRel. There is a huge difference between reading between the lines and writing between the lines. This feels more like the latter.

  • T-Money

read the ull thing. gasol also said that the ball should go inside more often. this is nothing new, he’s been saying that since last year. allenp, pau does hit the glass, rebounding has never been a problem for him. it’s a crime not to feed a top 5 (at least) low post scorer.
